Drew Hutchison. Jacob deGrom. You probably never thought you'd see a comparison between these two pitchers, right? After all, Jacob deGrom is the best pitcher in MLB. In fact, the Mets Jacob deGrom is having a historic season right now. The Blue Jays Drew Hutchison, however, is the anti-deGrom, a title given to a pitcher that is lucky with Wins and Losses relative to ERA.
This video serves as both a celebration of 2018 Jacob deGrom, as well as 2021 Jacob deGrom highlights. It also highlights the 2015 Blue Jays, one of the more entertaining teams of the past decade. They had a powerful offense, buoyed by Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, and Edwin Encarnacion.
But ultimately, it's Drew Hutchison who is the star of the show. And this video's frank discussion of MLB run support puts Hutchison on top and deGrom on the bottom. deGrom Cy Young be darned, Hutchison made history as well.

The tangent about our ocean was completely warranted.
There's something going on down there.
@@FoolishBaseball I'm just trying to make my waffles down here in peace!
@@FoolishBaseball We need to get the bottom of this.
This comment made me realize why a tangent is called a tangent. This is because a conversation or story is like a circle. A tangent line of a circle is a line extending from exactly one point of a circle and thus perpendicular to the radius connecting that tangent point and the center point. The tangent of an angle of a right triangle equals the opposite side of the angle over the adjacent side of that angle. Besides, how to people come up with these formulas? Like for the volume of a sphere, how in the heck do you get (4/3)*pi*r^3 and that's not even the most ridiculous one! The weirdest formulas are probably some that I havent even learned yet. We had a student teacher come in once so he could get some teaching experience in an actual class and he was teaching us about proofs and all these theorems and postulates and just writing, writing, and writing, and I'm like, dude, its math you plug stuff in, answers come out. We dont need to make our own instructions just because we need to show work. Wait...
@@FoolishBaseball Legend has it that my respect for the Astros is down there
I don't know what's more impressive, deGrom's current 0.50 ERA or the fact that he has 7 WINS.
Or how he is hitting over 400 as a pitcher
Any pitching stat impressive with the rampant cheating in the league? Players roiding up, lets wait 10 years to do anything. Team cheats all the way to WS win, no penalty. Pitchers hardcore doctoring ball, arguably more so than roids has an effect on the game, who cares. MLB just entertainment now, no longer a sport...
@@drewmartin9148 DeGrom never cheated...
@@drewmartin9148 Cole clears degrom anyways
@@drewmartin9148 we use spin rate to “determine” who is and isnt cheating. And deGroms spin rate has hardly shifted at all this entire year. He is obviously above League average, but not close to the people we know were cheating. And his spin rate was exactly the same as it always has been when he started post substance ban. So there’s no evidence that he was cheating then and he certainly couldn’t get away with it now

underrated comment
Finally, a video where the Blue Jays are connected heavily. Thank you
You're welcome!
@@FoolishBaseball I’ve never seen a pitcher perform so poorly yet so well.
Here’s my explanation: DeGrom is easily the Mets’ best starter, so he is first in their pitching rotation and therefore usually faces the opponent’s best starter. Hutchison, however, is at the bottom of the Jays’ rotation and is up against opposing teams’ worst starters. This (among other factors) could account for the difference in offensive run support, as Blue Jays batters are facing easy pitchers when Hutchison starts but Mets batters are facing hard pitchers when DeGrom starts.
My exact thought, opposing teams will always put their best pitcher against him
As a Jays fan it was uncanny how the bats lit up every time Hutch pitched.
The '15 & '16 teams were amazing & so much fun to watch, despite no title. Go Jays!
One of those weird psychological things where you ease up on the gas if you think something will be easier. I’d be locked tf in if I was playing 1v1 ball against lebron James even if I’d get destroyed meanwhile I’d just stand there if it was a kindergartener. Awful example but yeah😊

Drew Hutchison's 2015 season reminds me a lot of Tim Tebow's historic run with the Denver Broncos in 2011.
"All he does is win."
Jays fans still talk about this. I don't know how we were able to always put up some massive numbers every time he took the mound.
That team just lived and died by the homer. It's honestly a little refreshing to see the team now, I watched them give up 3 homers against the Braves and still beat them despite not homering once, huge change.
It's because Hutchison is a winner with the X-factor.

What an absolutely stacked Milwaukee Milkmen staff. Drew Hutchison going 6 IP 6 ER for the W, then Anthony Bender closing it out with 3 scoreless innings for the save.
Like the milkman, they always deliver.
Well this was unexpected. and I love it!
I've just been getting so messages to do a Drew Hutchison Baseball Bits, ya know?
I’m now imagining Drew Hutchinson was the team’s fav pitcher and every time he gave up a bunch of runs, they did everything they could to ensure he could get the win. I’m also now convinced that’s why they didn’t win the World Series. They were so sad their best friend was gone.
Man seeing that Jays squad brings back good memories. What could’ve been… but hey, I’m liking the way things are headed
Brings back memories of the 15 and 16 Jays teams

As a Jays fan, I absolutely lol'd when I saw the thumbnail. Thanks for another great video eh
On a sidenote, I attended 4 straight games from 2014-2016 where Hutchison started all of them. This included 1 from that bonkers 2015 season and his only 2 starts in Toronto from 2016. The Liriano trade is what mercifully ended that streak lol
I was about to suggest that maybe the trade wasn't worth it because Liriano sucked for us, but then I remembered his 2016 was alright and it was 2017 that he was terrible.
At least we got McGuire out of it?
Edit: Foolish pointed out in another comment that we got Teoscar for Liriano. Totally worth it in the end.
@@davispo7550 I felt that the 1st Liriano trade was worth it at the time. Getting that prospect capital by only taking on his full salary was helpful. That 2nd trade definitely made the move a lot better.
Even attened one of his starts back in 2017. It was the game vs Cleveland where he gave up 7 ER in 2+ IP and got hurt before the Jays came back and walked off on a Goins single.

Thank you Foolish Baseball for another great video. Keep up the good work!
Congrats on 200k subs! Nice that you should reach it along side one of your best vids!
2015 Blue Jays, the team that made me fall in love with baseball ♥️
Well Hutchison put up a 2.11 ERA in 9 appearances for the Tigers this year. But if you look at the underlying metrics, it seems to be really unsustainable. With a 4.39 FIP, 5.93 xFIP and 5.98 SIERA the numbers don’t look like they’d be too kind to him over an extended period of time. It seems he was helped a lot by a seemingly unsustainable 3.8% HR/FB rate and Steamer projects him with a 5.29 ERA if he were to get regular playing time in 2022
Bros the luckiest pitcher of all time ☠️
I was just going in on the Ocean vs Space rant earlier this week I started cracking up when you went on that tangent 😂
Loved the video Bailey! I continue to appreciate the nuance of your videos and you going beyond just talking about deGrom and his lack of run support and instead comparing it to an interesting season of Drew Hutchinson. Also I loved how many random cameos of players on the team you don't associate them with (Bautista on Mets, Price on Blue Jays, Hendriks on Blue Jays, Sandoval on Red Sox, etc...).
