By some measures, the 2020 New York Mets were one of the greatest offenses in MLB history. In terms of wRC+, a stat based on wOBA, which is based on the triple slash, they ranked up there with the 1927 Yankees and 1976 Reds, among others. Yet they struggled to get the important hits when they mattered. The 2020 Mets bases empty? Great. The 2020 Mets RISP? Not so great. Runners in Scoring Position 2 Outs was a kryptonite.
Boasting some great seasons from the likes of Robinson Cano, Jeff McNeil, Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, and Dominic Smith, they should've had enough to make the playoffs, but clutch hitting did them in. And it made them one of the most unique teams statistically in baseball history.
Some might see this episode as another chapter in LOLMETS. We get it. They're funny. But I hope it can be more than that. The 2020 Mets could be considered one of the greatest lineups ever assembled. Instead, they ended up being the weirdest lineup ever assembled. They had the ingredients of a high scoring team, but sequencing had other plans. 2020 and last year were the most frustrating games I’ve ever watched as a Mets fan. I’d get a heart attack every night win or lose cause either way they were blowing some lead or messing something up. Or just putting Edwin Diaz into the game

They were supposed to win it last year. Even as a Braves fan I was convinced they were gonna pull it off til the all star break when everything fell apart basically(may have even begun before that)

As a contrast to these 2020 Mets, we could look at the 2021 Mariners. They only had 2 strong hitters all season in Ty France and Mitch Haniger, but players like Kyle Seager generated enough clutch runs to get them a 90-72 record
Even in a season where they went 101-61, they still struggled to produce runs in the last couple months (and the wildcard series)
1:59 most baffling pitching change I’ve ever seen in any game was when they pulled Greinke in game seven because he had pitched a shutout but gave up one run and then only because he tipped the pitch (seriously showed that CU grip to Rendon for like 4-5 seconds while playing with his hat). It drives me bonkers!!!

@@pranavarora9976 A little late here, but it's because of the Oscars one year. The film 'Precious' constantly had it's full name read out every time it won or got nominated, the full name being 'Precious: Based on the Novel "Push" by Sapphire'. Precious was a genuinely pretty great film and rightfully got nominated a lot, so that full ass name got read out so so so many times. This made it very memeable. Hence the joke.

also, this is the approach that wins playoff births. Having a core of 5-6 hitters in the 800-1000 OPS range but no absolute monster. It's worked well for them this year now that they have made thier clutchness adjustments. If you look at the late 90's Yankees they had a similar lineup in terms of OPS.

That’s 2019. Diaz was good in 2020 and the main issue is literally what the video is about - couldn’t score runs. Oh, and their pitching besides deGrom was mediocre.

As a lifelong Mets fan I can confirm that no projection system will ever be able to account for the fact that the Mets are the Mets.

i remember quarantine, i loved putting on the mets games during the hot summer of 2020, i remember one thing about this season. THERE WERE ALWAYS RUNNERS STRANDED IN SCORING POSITION!! this was the most surprising and frustrating team!! This mets squad was so dominant but never was able to bring runners home. i’m so glad people can recognize this.
