Meleys The Red Queen spared the lives of King Aegon II & his whole family in House of the Dragon
Princess Rhaenys while imprisoned by Queen Alicent Hightower, escaped and approached with her dragon Meleys. She could have roasted the entire family of Otto Hightower, Aemond Targaryen, Helena Targaryen, but she spared their lives by a gesture of mercy and a warning.
Meleys, nicknamed the Red Queen, is a she-dragon ridden by Princess Rhaenys Targaryen. Covered in scarlet scales, she has accents of bright copper. It is her unique coloring for which she received her nickname. In her youth, she is said to have outpaced even Caraxes and Vhagar.

@@enhanced8812 that wouldn’t have really mattered tho cuz if she kills Aegon and Aemond then the greens are done for and the only person left to deal with would be Daeron but tessarion was the youngest dragon so the she-dragon wouldn’t be a problem and Heleana never wanted anything to do with the crown and in canon she wanted to let Rhaenrya be the queen so she wouldn’t have been a problem either .

When the greens forced aegon II to be king they painted a huge target on his back. Rheanys saw a mother trying to protect her child ( being someone who lost all her children) that’s why she hesitated .

There’s just so much to this scene. Rhaenys 100% proves she should have been queen all along by showing mercy when she didn’t have to (end result of that decision not withstanding), Meleys looks like a monster in a way that even most dragons never quite pull off, and Alicent silently answers Aegon’s question from the carriage by not hesitating to stand between a dragon and her son, proving that she absolutely does love him. Even Otto gets a good moment by screaming to open the doors, because in that moment, he knows they’re screwed, and wants to let the common folk escape. A fantastic scene
I don't think he wants to let the common folk scape. He wants to offer a way out for the dragon or wants to try a last minute, desperate, way to scape for himself or his family. He doesn't look like the guy to care much about what's "out of his level".
Otto has clearly read The Art of War, unlike the absolute numpties at the door. Closing the door gives Rhaenys no way out and no opportunity to change her mind, sealing the deal that she'd better toast them all.
As Sun Tsu teaches us - always leave your enemy a retreat, and hope they take it. A cornered foe fights to its last breath.

I was looking at it as a way to both try to humanize himself to Rhaenys and up the chances of her not killing them, and building good will with the common folk which would be useful in the event that they survived, but yeah not cornering a dragon is a good reason to keep them open too lol
She, like all these nobles, also does not give a sh*t about all the smallfolk who die as a result of her decisions which is a great way to partially set up what happens later in the story.

She's a royal, and those are peasants. As noble as she can be, It's sadly not unrealistic for her to think of them only as flying meat when she's trying to escape with her dragon, and trying to make a point about what side she choose in this war, specifically to the queen regent and her usurper son.

Otto screaming Open the doors was the only time he was probably not talking in self interest. He wanted those people to survive because he was absolutely sure that him, Alicent, Aegon, Aemond, Helaena and Criston are getting charred over there. That feeling of hopelessness

@@lillypharaoh5945killed her in a 2v1, they had to use 2 dragons, a trap and and army to take meleys out. And she didnt go out without critically injuring sunfyre and caraxes getting revenge on vhagar and killing her before he succumbed to his injuries on the shore.
@@Fawnelie it was more of a 1 vs 1 melys vs sunfyre where she trashed him and then vhagar appeared and it wasn't a fight anymore but a feeding frenzy, caraxes is the only dragon that gave vhagar a real fight and he died to achieve that.

I love how in GoT Drogon can sense that Daenerys is in danger from miles away, but Sunfyre, Vhagar and Dreamfyre seems to don't give a shit about their riders..... Season 1 of HotD was great but this scene was completely useless.
Well Sunfyre and Dreamfyre are probably chained in their lairs at the Dragonpit. Also Vhagar was said to be too big for the Dragonpit. Another thing, Dragon didn't save Dany until the very last minute because he had to fly to her from wherever he was

Ahem...the wanton death and destruction visited upon all the smallfolk is actually a key element in this entire story so even if the dragons did not sense anything here, the scene is far from useless. It's actually quite important as a set-up for what happens eventually.

Sorry, but Alicent was the badass here, putting herself between a dragon’s mouth and her son. Rhaenys casually murdered a bunch of innocent people in releasing her dragon beneath a massive crowd.

Most people watching this scene are looking at it from the wrong perspective. The scene gives you the answer as to why she didn't murder Alicent and her family even before that becomes a question: she doesn't give a sh*t about all the smallfolk who are dying here...because they're not human beings in her eyes, sicne she's a dragonrider and of noble birth. She only gives the courtesy of being considered a human being whose life might matter to her extended family, as they are also nobility. She, like most nobles in ASOIAF, does not care about the lives of all the poor people that get destroyed in the 'game of thrones'.
The point of this scene is to hammer home that even the most sympathetic characters in this story are ultimately horrible noble scumbags who don't care about the implications of their actions for the lives of those they consider beneath them. This will also play into how the story develops moving forward in a significant way.
The quetion of Team Green vs Team Black is never a serious question, as the answer should ALWAYS be Team Smallfolk. They make up the majoroty of the population, they're the ones being rueld over and they're the ones being murdered in this scene. The main characters in this story will eventually learn the hard way that they should've minded the smallfolk.
The smallfolk who pelted stones on Ned Stark and in Hotd, accepted a new king after having a queen already declared to be the heir?

They have more urgent concerns like making it through the day, since most people aren't exactly rich or powerful. However, there are far more of them than there are of any nobility. Their concerns hence matter more because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. The point of ASOIAF is that the people in power (nobility and royalty) do not care about the poor and powerless even though they should.

These are people who killed or sold baby Tyrek Lannister, raped Lolis multiple times, number of people end up as the meat in the hash brown sold in King's Landing..not all the player's were born nobility some rose from the smallfolk themselves.
The Jokers rationale was that once things get bad, civilization reverts to an unhibited fight for survival and resources..which is kind of true in the real world..

I'm beginning to think you either didn't read the books or chose to ignore the thematic point of ASOIAF: it's not a story about how terrible everyone is. It's a story about how people with power abuse their power and how the victims are most often women, children and the poor. ASOIAF has a lot of empathy for the smallfolk who get killed, maimed and abused by the likes of Gregor Clegane. The Broken Man speech is a perfect representation of the awfulness and pointlessness of violence too. You probably just skimmed through AFFC.

And for Drogon , Viserion , Rhaegal I really can't see them defeat Caraxes , Meleys , Sunfyre , Vhagar , Dreamfyre , Vermithor , Seasmoke , Cannibal , Silverwing . Only if they attack 1 VS 3 .
In GOT season 8 Viserion , Rhaegal were Arrax's size and Drogon was Vermax's size . They are not big enough to fight one of those dragons I listed above one on one YET

Because she's a neutral party at this stage and her original goal was to simply get away, not be remembered as an accursed kinslayer for all eternity.
She would have become the worst Targaryen kinslayer in history and by a long shot. Maegor the cruel was considered a monster for killing ONE of his kin. Rhaenys was about to kill 6 of her kin (Aegon II, Aemond, Helaena, Jahaerys, Jahaera and Maelor), all of whom had no way of defending themselves not mention they are mostly innocent at this point
