Here we are the people Beethoven was talking about "for the ages" - how lucky are we? So humbling a gift. So many of us love and cherish Beethoven ovev two centuries later, and that will never change.
The Razumovsky quartets are experimental works, whose intricacies are 200 years ahead of their time. Like Joyce's novels, Duerer's woodcuts, or Thoreau's Walden, their (a)tonal originality would astonish us if they were first being concertized now. And they would be as demanding on all the artists who perform them today as they were when they debuted (c. 1807). We are "out of tune," not the violinists! When Beethoven noted that he composed them for the ages, he wasn't kidding. Read what the Takacs Quartet has to say about the difficulties of playing them, let alone, divining the essence of the whole score, and you will understand why. The Berg Quartet is equal to the Budapest--the highest level of string mastery. They bring each bar to life, which is the lasting tribute that skill pays to genius.
Thanks for the thoughts... Kind of like his great fugue vis. being 'for a later age'... well, I only HOPE I may understand /feel the thoughts behind such works enough to properly appreciate them.
Thats really saying something!!! Alas hehas so many amazing compositions; I'm stuck on the Opus 135 quartet...that lush, tender 3rd movement is as though Beethoven was saying goodbye to the world.
My son will perform this at the Bowdoin Festival in a few weeks! So wonderful to have this recording to get my listening in before making the trip to Maine to be in the audience. This quartet is fabulous and I look forward to hearing more of their performances; what a fabulous recording 🥲
@@vincentleclercq3094 They played the first two movements on separate days; he lets me know when he posts them under Dexter Mott. These performances were two to three weeks ago, streamed live, with me in the audience.
Edward Dusinberre of the Takacs Quartet tells how in January 1993 his audition piece for joining the quartet was the final movement of this piece - and how extremely hard it is to play. The Alban Berg quartet perform it magnificently!
Pichler's fourth-finger trill at 31:55 is brilliant; few other violinists could pull it off. Wow. Altogether a fantastic performance, and a barn-burner of a finale.
Probably my favorite quartet for Beethoven. Always intense, as I (like to?) imagine Beethoven was... I'm no expert, far from it, but I seem to GET Beethoven through their interpretations.
He might have used that in 2 or 3 things, but I have never seen it. He Did use it in Une Femme Marie. Everytime the couple started fighting, he would turn off the sound and give us the 2nd movement. I went out and bought the record.
really? only considered by 1000s of ppl to be his greatest quartet. do you have something against the Russian people? or are you still a child & unable to appreciate passion of LvB?
So squeaky. Is that the first violinist? Very annoying high notes that are not in same key as others. I turned away after first movement. I don''t react this way to any other quartets and I love this music.
as said before this is experimental on Russian folk tunes which have different tonal qualities from the 'Mozart ideal' harmonies. kind of like 'the blues' you have to live a long time to appreciate such passionate expressions. you might start with the 2nd movement here to sample some of THE most beautiful music ever written.
The 1st violinist is painfully out of tune throughout the andante con moto and the beginning of the allegro vivace. The quartet as a whole is frequently sloppy, lacking rhythmic precision, and out of sync. Am I supposed to be impressed?
It's a useless question to ask whether you're supposed to be impressed. Far more useful would be for you to give examples of performances (of this quartet particularly) that you ARE impressed by, that way you would give some context for your remarks. Frankly, you sound out of sync yourself.

Brilliant! They deserved a standing ovation!
That's some attack at the beginning of the 1st movement. Brilliant interpretation
Maravilloso ! Con un brillante final para ésta trilogia de cuartetos opus 59.

BRAVO from Mexico City!
Extraordinaria trilogia, el op. 59 es uno de mis cánones beethovianos...
The cello pizzicato is wonderful!
Fabuleux !

Very fine, great beauty of sound from ABQ. Compare slow movement to Lindsays version - so different.

Yup.

Godard uses this in 2 or 3 things I know about her. Godard uses Beethoven and Mozart wonderfully in his films.

Obviously not a great work, but very tuneful and memorable, good for learning.
a very arrogant and ignorant comment obviously

Wrong. This Quartet is objectively better than every single contemporary piece of music.
So squeaky. Is that the first violinist? Very annoying high notes that are not in same key as others. I turned away after first movement. I don''t react this way to any other quartets and I love this music.

certainly my least favourite of his quartets.
Why?
@@ultimateconstruction tbh i will need to listen to it a lot more - i say this because number 8 has grown on me so incredibly much.

@@LachlanTyrrell2003 - Perhaps he is a pianist and expects everything to be in equal temperament! LOL
It’s not out of synch. It’s the impetus , like something in jazz jamming.
You call it "out of tune", we call it "just intonation".
