I know this was a long time ago, but I saw a recent article about this on Facebook today so have only just come across this clip now and I really can’t believe this. Dannii was never my favourite judge and I also had no reason to dislike her, but I didn’t buy her explanation - I believe her apology, but I don’t believe that he found it funny at the time and that it had all been blown out of proportion. The face she made as she was saying it and after she said it was not the face of someone who just playing around but even if it was and she was just having fun then his face and reaction should have given it away that he didn’t find it funny and she should have made a quick apology then or just said something like ‘I’m only messing’ once she realised everyone was taken aback, but she kept a sort of smug look on her face. I don’t believe she’s homophobic and don’t believe she meant it in a malicious way, but I’m not really sure why she felt it was appropriate to say it. Yes he talked about it to the press and yes they may well have joked about it backstage together, but being put on the spot in front of millions of viewers on prime time Saturday night TV like that is not the same. There are way more people who watch X Factor than there are people who read the tabloids and certainly more than there would have been backstage when they were joking privately. He may not have been offended by her comment as such, but he obviously didn’t expect her to say anything on live TV and he was clearly taken aback and had no idea how to react - I mean what are you supposed to say back to that? Even Dermot came on stage before all the judges had finished commenting because he could see Danyl was uncomfortable. As I said, I don’t believe she was trying to be nasty and she probably did think she was just continuing a joke that was already going on backstage, but she should have known better. Her job is to comment on the vocals and overall performance of the contestants, not irrelevant details of their personal lives and considering she had been in the public eye longer than he had, she should have thought about the impact that could have had on him, both in the competition and out. There are still people who aren’t accepting towards the LGBTQ+ community, so I imagine it would have been worse 11 years ago and he will most likely have lost votes from unaccepting people who would have voted for him had they not known he was possibly bisexual. And although I believe her apology for some reason, I don’t like the way she said it. When she said she wants everyone to know that he actually wasn’t offended, she again seemed very smug and annoyed, as if she knew all along she didn’t do anything wrong and was only apologising because she basically had to. I respect Danyl for the way he handled it, from the start it was clear he was passionate about music and really wanted to make it and be taken seriously and regardless of how he deep down wanted to react to Dannii’s comment, he knew that challenging her could have cost him more votes or he could be seen as one of those ‘angry’ contestants and ended up on one of those compilation videos which no one wants. I’m glad she apologised, but just don’t think it was necessary and it should have been a case of think before you speak. I also respect how Simon handled the whole situation. Regardless of whether people like him or not, he called Dannii out at the time which she deserved, but he also stuck up for her on the results show as he knew she wasn’t a horrible person and just made a mistake.
She did it to get him ousted and knew he was going to be a strong contender therfore she jumped in and tryed to get her own act to win.. very simple logic and no call to make an essay out of it things can be made real simple and read more

He talked about his sexuality in a tabloid before the show, but being outed on national TV in front of millions of viewers is different than being on page 12 of a newspaper. He was obviously hurt by the comment, and was smart about it for his future career, taking the high road and saying it was all OK. It would have been fine if she said that during one of the rehearsals and not prime time, but she just sprung it on him, not judging his amazing performance but making it about gender preferences, which is wrong, and I'm pretty sure it lost him a lot of votes, from people who might have voted for him if they hadn't read the papers and known about his sexuality. I don't necessarily blame it on people who are afraid of LGBT, it's just the way they've been raised, and it's probably going to take a generation or two until it becomes the norm, I do blame it on her, because she should know better and know her comments reach both people who are understanding, and people who haven't gotten there yet.

Not only is she nice and fair but she's one of the biggest gay icons in the world and does tons of work for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transvestite rights. It just wouldn't make sense. I think the only reason people have made such a big deal about this is because Danyl was surprised and kind of emotional, and since Simon had such an angry response to Dannii's comment for some reason. it wasnt out of place, she was saying it out of humour , even though i thought it was more of a serious comment about his sexuality. obviously people read papers and there was something written about him possibly being gay or bi and she was saying he didnt need to change the lyrics so it was about a girl, he should of just left them and not been worried about changing them to not sound gay x
