  • This piece was a creative spin on the stories of my sibling-ship as well as others who I interviewed. I hope that this video will inspire you to reach out to your loved ones this holiday season, especially for those who you have lost connection with throughout the years.

A short film about siblings and the inevitable stages we go through.
This piece is dedicated to my brother Alvin and my sister Tiffany, who are the best siblings in the world. We've gone through ups and downs but at the end of the day I know I can always count on y'all for anything :) May God bless you guys in everything that you do!

I think this scenario applies to friends too where there comes a point in life when people kinda drift apart because they get occupied w/ various activities, people, and choices in their lives. I have one older sister who I'm close to; sometimes I think too close, but I remember a time when she was in college and I was in middle school that I felt like we were so far away from each other. I mean there's definitely an age gap there, but thinking back, it's only natural that she and I kinda grew apart then because we were in totally different stages in life. Now that I'm older (we're both working adults now), we begin to spend more time w/ each other. This is a really touching video. I like how you're so down to earth and share what's important in real life.

this video is spot on for me. except the neglect happened much earlier for me when my sister was in middle school and i had just entered. i think she was trying to be cool or something but she was always trying to avoid me. when she didn't want to sit next to me on the bus for the first time i cried making everyone turn to look at her and think she was a jerk and she sat back down with me. it was satisfying but i felt bad so i let her go and just hung out with my own friends more. i just accepted that teenagers needed their space :P makes me want to talk to my sister about the old times. great video! :)

Mine was worst, an embarrassing pic of me and my slightly bigger sized cousin was taken and posted my my father's sister with the caption "Guess who is Form 3 (15) and who is Standard 5 (11)?" I had already felt horrible about my inability to grow and brother saw that picture/post of me. He laughed and yelled "ROASTED OHHH!!" and showed it to my grandma, me and mom (mom already knew and was mad at my aunt) and laughed about it to them. I showed how affected by saying "I don't want to see it." and teared up a bit. But he just continued to mock me and later on that night, after hours of forcing and telling myself that I shouldn't be bothered by both the picture and my brother's reaction, I broke down. I'm not sure if anyone heard me or just chose to ignore it, but it hurt a lot. After weeks of it happening, it still replays over and over in my mind, with the same exact line and the same exact feeling of hurt and betrayal. He was suppose to be my protective brother, but after years of neglection and bullying, I really don't know how to deal with him anymore. He's my only sibling, but I can never count on him even though he can always count on me. God, what do I do?

I've seen you a couple of times on Buzzfeed. To be honest I never quite gave you much thought. Aside from thinking you were funny in those videos you were just that extra guy placed in it. While I had some free time I came across your channel. And I am glad I did. Your videos are so well done! Its clear just how much thought and effort you put into your work. I have to say that some of these made me cry. Especially Restaurant Kid. In a way I was in the same position. But with a few changes. That video made me think back on how much my mom gave up for my brother and I. And your other videos made me ponder on other things. In my opinion, that is the best kind of material someone could make. I know they are making others just like me really think about what is important. So I just want to say thank you! That was awesome!

When I was younger I wanted to play with my sister a lot because I didn't really have friends outside of school. Usually she didn't want to do what I wanted or just wanted to do her own thing with her friends and whatnot. Eventually I started using the computer and playing video games more so we didn't really hang out together. Apparently when I was younger I thought my sister was kind of weird, but when I got older I came into who I am now and realized that I'm not that much different than her. She's only two years older than me so when we were in high school together she would always help me if I needed it, although I never really reached out to her. It wasn't really until she went to university and lived in the dorms that we started to connect a bit more. My parents could never get their point across with me and vice versa when we were talking about my future and my sister is really the only person that can help mediate that issue with us. Now I feel like we're a lot closer than we ever were before. Soon she's going to be moving to pursue grad school in California and asked if I wanted to come with her, it would definitely make things easier and maybe things would work out for the better. :) Loved your video, Steven! Keep doing what you're doing!

Hey Steven! I just wanted to take a moment to say thanks so much for making this video. My brother and I have a huge age gap, and with the both of us in very different stages in our lives growing up, at times it felt like we skipped "companionship". I've always told myself, especially since starting college, that I should work hard to be a better example and better sibling. Instead our different interests and arguments kept that from happening, and the only times I have been able to be "there" and helpful has been through giving advice about social life in school and home life when problems came up. Watching your video inspires me to make now and this new year a step towards getting back to companionship, to be real friends and siblings. Thank you so much, and continue the amazing work you do! You're awesome!

    -
This is kind of like me & my cousin rn except we're probably at like...companionship. The end stages happened after the 1st stage for us so it was out of the order you went through
We were never close & didn't really talk about ourselves or talk in general unless we were at family parties but this year we started to talk more & more.
We started talking more in a group chat w/ all the cousins then it became just us 2 that talked because everyone else just stopped responding in the chat so..
I wanna say we're close but lol...don't think she feels the same yet :P

This made me tear up. I feel like that with my older brother right now. I looked up to him so much. He was my role model, but then he neglected me during a really hard time with family life. I needed him more than anything, and I was so hurt when he didn't respond to my pleas for help. Our relationship crumbled, and just now he apologized for not being there for me...but I'm still so angry. I think it is going to take a long time for me to let go... I have to heal first. I am also living in S. Korea right now, but maybe reconciliation can happen when I go back to America... Maybe...

Steven, your videos are really meaningful and helpful. Thank you. The kids are cool too.
I'm handicapped. I had very strict, sometimes controlling and overprotective parents, religious, but I was loved and I was a good kid most of the time. -- But like with you and your brother, there are still things that get between people, even in a mostly good relationship, especially family. I was an only child. There were some things I just could not talk about with my parents, and a few things that really hurt, growing up and as a young adult. We stuck together, but those things were dividing us. -- It was only when my parents were gone that I realized how much they'd limited my life, and yet they didn't mean to do wrong, they thought they were right. -- And I wish I could go back and talk to them, tell them why, and get them to change. And yet I can't, of course, I have to move on. Yet I still love them, and hey, I am not perfect either. I have rarely had best friends I felt were like brothers, but it's happened a couple of times. -- I would urge people to try to work through their differences and stay connected. But I also know, sometimes, with some people, one or both sides need to end the relationship for their own or mutual good. So it's hard to say. Anyway, this story of getting through a complicated relationship and getting back together, really is good. I hoe you guys can always work through being brothers and friends. I think you guys are lucky to have a brother. Thanks.

I have two older siblings (sister and brother) and we spent a lot of time together growing up but the more interesting relationship is with my sister hahaha. We went through the stages you talked about but we also shared a room for a long time so neglect became annoyance. Siblings really are irreplaceable though.
