I related so much to the part where no one pick up the kid, cause my parent are always be too busy to pick me up from school or drive me anywhere. If i want to go somewhere I have to tell them a week before so that they can make up time to drive me. Sometime I have to go over a friend house for school project but no have time so I have to ask my friend if they can give me a ride, and it just awkward since we only talk to each other because of the project. I just want to have my driver license already so that I don't have to bother them if I want to go somewhere.
There is a secret: u s e t h e b u s
I am most likely the oldest "Restaurant Kid" out of the bunch here. 47 years old, grew up pretty much imprisoned in the restaurant, good and bad times. Never got to join sports or any other after school activity because parents were "too busy". Long hours at the restaurant, only go home to sleep, friends and teachers at school know me as the kid with the restaurant, remember going to a friends house for dinner and was surprised how different they were. Thanks for sharing, nice to know that there are others like me :)
Cute kid and touching video. I'm not a restaurant kid but my dad came to this country with a masters degree and still had to scrub floors to buy my baby formula and diapers. He started his own business and it became extremely successful. We don't have to worry about paying bills and I don't have to worry about how I'm going to get through college, but I can relate to never having being able to see your parents. My dad is always busy and I'm extremely grateful for everything he's done to ensure I have a good life.
+Thought So i think your daddy is a pretty wonderful guy. wish your family happiness
As a current restaurant kid, this video just gave me chills. Good job
God Damit steven stop putting onions in your videos. And btw u just earned a new subscriber
:')... is there an onion in your comment?!
+holycrapitsceleste Who keeps throwing onions!?!
+TheMechanicalGirl999 oops, Sorry!
Ashley Zhu*Throws one at Ashley!* ONION FIGHT! Nice name too!
I'm just another privileged white girl who has always heard about the experiences of others, read about them, even had conversations with those who have lived differently than I do, but I guess I never listened. I cried at the ends of Restaurant Kid and The Things I Carried. These videos were my first insight into a small part of what it means to be Asian American. So I just want to say thank you. Because I think I'm a better person for it.
Hannah Barz awww. thanks for watching! i know you say "i'm just another privileged white girl," but I think you should be proud of your culture! - which I'm sure you are, but expressing that is important too.
This just brought tears to my eyes and I had to retreat to my room to have a good cry. I'm not a restaurant kid but I understand what these individuals have gone through. I think you really accurately portrayed and communicated the feelings behind this relationship between the parent and child.
Also, I would like to say that I grateful enjoyed going to your session this weekend at VIA-1! Thank you so much for coming out and talking to us! I had checked out your CZcams channel before the conference and enjoyed your content. Wish we got a picture together!
You're doing great things
i had a great time at via-1! thanks for checking out my channel and supporting :) if you ever see me, don't hesitate to grab a picture too!
I was also a restaurant, but then transitioned to become a nail shop kid. This video is really touching. I cried because it reminded me of all the memories at the restaurant, but it also reminded me of everything my parents have gone through and what they are still going through just for me and my brother.
This is so great! Thank you for making this short, and thanks to the interviewees for sharing their story!
thank you for watching! i'm glad you could relate.. share the video with your friends too if you want :)
This video really touched me. Though I'm not a restaurant kid, I can relate to a lot of the Asian Americans who grew up in a working class family. I remember I used to play the flute and my parents were always working and never had the time to watch me perform while my friends' parents did. It was disappointing, but thinking back, I know my parents worked hard for me. Thank you for making this film.
you're welcome; i'm glad you connected
I always try to look around to understand different cultures and lifestyles as well as what they go through...
I wanted to thank all of you on this channel for both informing me and touching my heart.
This video made me cry. It was very close to what I experienced as a kid. Thank you.
This is such a touching, sweet video. I got teary-eyed especially when the girl started to get emotional. No matter your culture or ethnicity, our parents work hard to do better for us. As kids, we can be so ungrateful. I can only hope that my parents know now how much I appreciate how much they did for me growing up and how much they still do for me now. Thank you to all the parents who make sacrifices and work hard for their families!
This video really touched my heart. My 3 siblings and myself were all "restaurant kids". Helping my parents out is really the only way I can see them.. If I didn't help at the restaurant then I would RARELY see them. All the sacrifices I had to make to help out Eg. After school activities, team sports. But I understand they needed help, my parents have sacrificed a lot for me as well by working long fulltime to help support their family which I really appreciate. They are always stressed and tired from working.
wow thank you for making this. It really touched me deeply. Often I forget there are so many other families and kids that went through the same thing.
This is one do the most relatable videos I've ever seen. My parents are also restaurant workers and so it was pretty hard living like this. They are still working in the same restaurant for 12+ years already.
This was well done. Teared up watching this. Thanks for reminding us how much our parents want the best for us.
As always, thanks for the support always summer project! :)
This was so beautiful. It reminds me of the struggles our family has in terms of giving the best to our children. The violin lessons really hit home. We are doing the same balancing act for our eldest right now.
The feels I'm a restaurant kid too so I understand.
God Steven, I just began watching your videos today and I've saw this amazing piece of work. I'm so glad that there are other people who also have to deal with their parents working long hours without lots of time to spend with their kids. Although I wish my parents could spend more time with me as a kid, I know that they're doing it for us. Thanks for sharing this.
Great videos, Steven. Growing up in a predominately white neighborhood with my immigrated family, I'm blown away by how accurate this this. These videos pretty much captured the story of my life.
***** wheee. glad you related!
The end of the video was pretty touching for me.
It's because of how it is between me, mom and my dad.
I'm always trying to do my best to not go the same way as everyone else has done in my family.
Mom is mentaly broken down, so she can't work, she doesn't go up from bed often either.
Dad doesn't live with us, byt he lives in the same town.
Dad used to "take druggs" and stuffs. So I don't really know my dad that much today.
He has stoped, he does work now.
He works with taking care of elder people.
What makes me sad about my dad though is this:
He has 6 kids.
He is married with another person than my mom, and he has 2 kids with her, 2 kids with another woman, and 2 kids with my mom.
I don't really think that is horrible. What's horrible is that he totaly forgets about his kids.
All he thinks about is his work which is to take care about people, but he can't take care of his kids.....
He didn't come to celebreate my sisters birthday when she turned 18, nether did he come to mine. (I'm 16 now).
Mom can't really take care of me and my sister, but we are old enough to do it by ourselfs :3 (at least by experience)
I don't feel home or safe when I'm at home, I want to be in school, and that's becaise I know that's where I can learn, create a bright future, and that's where I feel happy, home and safe.
I always turn a little depressed when I am home over the weekend, cuz then I know that I can't go to school.
I don't ever want to end going to school, too many people in my family has failed.
and I want to make my mom proud.
I want to give her hope although she barely can't get out of bed.
There is one thing I hate more than crying myself. And that is to see mom crying.
All the pain she has gone through in all her life, and all the people who are needed to fix those wholes in her heart are dead.
She will never hear anything else from them again.
So I hope and do my best to hold her up :3
Sorry if what I just said didn't relate to the video, but for me it does :3
I rarely talk about this, but this video opened me to at least say it here :3
So, thanks for sharing this video :3
I hope your live will get better as each day pass!
+张冰冰 that's something guy
易靜風 all though my dad didn't take drugs but he has 4 children and 3 different wives.
And another is that we have the same last name.
Thank you. Thank you for telling this story and bringing people who lived this together. So many onions...
I watched this and I started crying. none of this relates to me or is relevant to my life but I was extremely touched by this. Good job! everyone should be very proud of themselves.
Nice film...... it showed the importance of a family working together to do the best for their family! From hard work and love you displayed in the film... great job!
A very touching short film. Glad you can bring these stories forward for more people to see.
thank you for the encouragement!
I relate to this so much that I started crying. I grew up in a restaurant all my life and to this day I recently graduated college and feel a little guilt about leaving my parents at the restaurant. Unfortunately growing up I felt as if I never came more than second to work and there were times where I stopped telling my parents about things I was excited about. To this day it still hurts that they missed out on my high school graduation where I won multiple awards and wanted them there to see it, but it was the biggest thing for me when they closed the restaurant and travelled 3 hours to see me walk at my bachelor's commencement ceremony. I still hold resentment towards the restaurant and my parents for missing out so much, but I have a higher understanding of their sacrifice now. The main thing is that it pushed me through school and beyond to make sure I would never have to struggle like they do. I (and my friends) also appreciate the cooking skills I picked up through the years!
This was really touching. I really enjoy your content and music choice. Keep up the good work
This is such an amazing film. I was a restaurant kid myself (only that we were in NZ) and to be honest... I hated it a lot when I was a kid. But I grew up to learn about all of the sacrifices that my parents have made for me and my brother and this film made me realise it again! I couldn't stop crying while watching this because it brought back a lot of memories. But I'm gonna give my parents a big hug when they come back home today! Thank you so much and such a great work!! Keep up the amazing work you are doing!! :)
Im from auckland!
Steven this is SOOOOOO good. I almost cried and that soundtrack u chose is fully amazing. Thanks for making my day
You're such an incredible filmmaker. Thanks to your friends as well for sharing their experiences!
NOSTALGIA!!!!!! Tears formed within the first 2 Minutes!!! This is my LIFE!!!! That was even the same TV Series I watched when I was a kid!!!!!!!! MAH LIFEEEEEEEEEEE
this really made me cry!!! this video is so awesome, you're amazing
Steven, you came to my school today and you mentioned this was your favorite video that you made, I saw so much of my childhood in this video, and it was the first time I broke out balling for any video.
Hey man love your videos! Keep up the amazing work and hope you continue to have success.
Another restaurant kid here in Spain who's going to watch your videos from now on!
Great video, seen myself reflected in there. Keep making amazing stuff!
Wasn’t a restaurant kid, but my parents were immigrants from S. Korea and I had a totally different life from the people who attended my school where I had to be heavily involved in my parents’ businesses. My parents did the best they could and I’m so proud of them and value the lessons and bond I have with them. This video really touched me deeply. Thank you so much for making this.
This video makes me cry, I'm 16 and has been a restaurant kid since I was 8. No one can understand except the people who have been through this. Life is fucking hard but that unspoken love from our parents make every step worth it.
1. I would be surprised and happy if the kid in the video is related to my friend York from jr. high and high school.
2. A few years ago, I ate at a Chinese buffet, and when I went to pay, the cashier was a kid, younger than 12 or 10. He hardly spoke, gave back my change quickly, and did a good job. I was impressed. His folks may have been busy or resting, and he and they may not have spoke much English. Maybe he understood English more than they did. I never got to go back, but it stuck with me, this little guy doing a good job, dealing with customers. And I grew up around my mom's art shop, so I'm familiar with how it can be. This video is great. Thanks so much!
3. Another small buffet place -- half of the kitchen staff were Latinos. It was very funny for me as a white guy, to enjoy a Chinese buffet and hear fluent Spanish from the kitchen door! :D But I'd guess the reason is, both communities have immigrants needing jobs and face prejudice, so working together might make good sense for everyone. The for was good and the situation was good humor.
I'm not a restaurant kid, but my parents owned a used car dealership when I was growing up. My dad easily worked over 12 hours a day, six or seven days a week. I'm so grateful for all they've sacrificed for me. I really enjoyed your video!
Great job. This was extremely well done, and as someone who doesn't have this background made me understand and emphasize with its subject(s).
my job here is done!
ah I hated when my parents had their restaurant, I never got to spend time with them or even at home it was go to school then restaurant everyday...
@@Someone-fg1cm gotta do what you gotta do to survive.
But yes, it kinda is. >_> Gotta live though
Great job Steven. I can't say i have really enjoyed you're previous work. I mainly watched because i liked your personality and I wanted to support you. But there was a drastic improvement with this short film. It portrayed a great story that many of us can relate to. Overall you did a great job and I hope to see many more like this. :)
also First!
I lied I did enjoy some of your other short films, but this is your best so far.
Curryjesus hah thank you for sticking with me and the feedback. i only plan on going up and up from here!
So true. I’m german Chinese and have lived the same life here. Growing up with very little money even though my parents worked 14 hours a day -every day a week. They were always so tired and so was I. I never understood why I was the only kid who had to work; who could not have parents at social events. Who would always get scolded for bad grades because I couldn’t understand they wanted a better life for me. I’m graduating this summer and if it wasn’t for my parents I could not have all of the privileges I had until now. Compared to other ppl I consider myself very very lucky. I love my parents. For me they sacrificed their sweat, tears and blood. I’m very thankful. And looking back, I wouldn’t ever exchange my life for anybody’s else.
Steven, that was fantastic. So relateable to the point of tears :')
This was a very touching considering the fact I am a restaurant kid. I'll admit I was a spoil as a child and didn't think that my parents were trying hard for my future. Now that I am older I laugh at my younger self. I know my parents love me and care for and I don't regret being a restaurant kid. Working as a kid in my parents store made me realized how much they trusted me to allow me to help them at the restaurant. Thank for this video!
You're welcome! It certainly seems that every restaurant kid I meet is much stronger because of the experiences they went through
Wow! This video was very touching! It deserves way more than 40k views!!!!
This is so sad. My husband is a restaurant kid and he suffered from overworking since very young. He never had a kids life, no play, no extra activities, no holidays and his parents never made time for him.He now has many chronic diseases from eating very unhealthy meat and high fat diet his entire life and the stress, workload and lack of sleep, he had inflammations and was in wheelchair since his 30s, many flare ups when he couldn't walk since his 20s. He promised himself that he'd not let our son grow up in a restaurant no matter what. And we always leave big tips when we see children helping their parents in their restaurants. Now we have a real estate company and we spend most of our time with our son.
In the end, when they both retired, they sold the restaurant (in prime location) and made a fortune. They claimed they only did what they did for their kids, but reality is, they went with all the money back to their country and didn't leave anything for their kids at all. I detest having a relationship with them.
This is so good you need more views
You moved my heart
This very touching you did a very good job on this topic though I wasn't among those of restaurant kids but I had a few friends that were in those shoes very touching love your vids, BTW idk of u remember we met at via 1 in Ohio state I was in your workshop and had a tlk bout parents expectations? Speaking of which it would be pretty cool if u did a video on that topic? And again thank you form the inspirational talk at via1
I grew up as a restaurant kid & now I am also a family father and a restaurant owner. I am also trying to balance business and family. Great video.
I can NOT stop crying
This hits home... really, really, hard.
Haven't started watching this yet but I know I'm gonna be like T.T (WAHHHHH) afterwards looking forward to it :D
Yep had a good cry especially after 5:43 haha Great job Steven! hope you continue to make films that touch our hearts :)
artisticallychallenged you're welcome! i'm glad it met your expectations
This is such a meaningful video with elaborate thought put into making it. I really like it! :)
Literally my fave youtuber rn 🐙
OMG 😭😭😭😭 IM GOING THROUGH THIS RIGHT NOW!!
This really hit me where it hurts 🥲
Always either at the restaurant or at home and never getting at places on time or being forgotten for hours. My parents only have 3 days a year off and they’re always working. Sometimes I hate them for not being able to spend time with me or go out on weekends like other families, but deep down I love them for all the hard work they’ve done ❤️
Ask them to recognize your work in the restaurant this one simple act will keep you moving. Chinese parents only talk through their actions and rarely talk about stuff like this. It really destroyed my mental health after working in the restaurant after 8-10 years as a kid. I hope you're doing well and take good care of yourself / go out to get fresh air from time to time. Even ask them to take a day off a week it will keep you and your family in a better mental state. If not you should take time off for yourself and be courageous to ask for a day off and be considered of them when asking. Year after year it will take a toll on your mental health
@@dddavid132 Thank you so much I’m doing much better now that I’m older! 😅I didn’t think anyone would reply to this comment so I really appreaciate it ❤️
This made me reflect on how hard my dad has worked for us since he came to America. He arrived with only $500 in his pocket and had to work his way up. I don't tell my parents I love them enough.
Omg finally found this video again😭😭😭💓💓💓
I'm not a restaurant kid but is a shop kid, even in child time, i have to help up in the shop. I still remember they leave me few times at tuition center and forget to take me back. I think most of the Chinese in the world are always busy to earn money for their children. But because of them, i get the driving license immediately after i old enough.
I grew up in a rural town in China. When I was in elementary school, I walk 2 miles every day for school. I left my hometown to a city which is 50 miles away from my parents for middle school. Then 300 miles for high school. Now, for the college, I am in the states, my parents are in China(6000 miles away), and I haven't been able to travel back for 4 years.
Asian parents don't say "love" to you because they want you to be tough so that you can survive.
Such a nice video! It reminds me about my childhood, it not only happens with "restaurant kid". Thank you for making a very insightful video :)) . Actually, I really love your videos.
p/s: you are very good at stealing tears !!
well damn steven bring back memories
I have so much respect for kids like this. I will truly never understand what it's like but this gives me a better view. I feel guilty for being a brat sometimes while there are people who live this everyday. This video opened my eyes.
TVB drama WHOO! Lol
XD
Great message though:)
omfg steven. Why must you always do this. I'm not crying, your crying!
*you're
This video is so relatable it made me cry. Even if my parents don't own a restaurant
This made me cry
Great video! I really enjoyed it.
thank you!
You just earned a new subscriber Steven
this is an amazing project. i was a restaurant kid too so thank you.
beautifully filmed. Nice job Steven
appreciate the comment! filming credit goes to my good friend david wai!
Love this video so much but I almost cried
I'm literally crying
Thank you, Steven.
Hit me right in the feels.
very moving video man! excellent work!
Dude... You opened my understanding of a different life style!!!!
I literally started crying half way through.
this made me cry
Wow! Powerful video. Even though I was a restaurant kid my parents did their best to come to my activities. My dad would leave work at 4, come watch my soccer game for an hour, rush back to work and grind it out until 10PM.
THIS WAS SO TOUCHING....
Good job, Steven.
My friends parents owned laundries, little shops and went through similar. Now I see a new crop of kids in new stores and takeout places in the very same buildings. My own parents worked crazy hours but not as shopowners. This made my heart ache with memories of those kids.
this is so relatable since I'm also a "restaurant kid". My parents never went to my elementary graduation...my sister which was free that day had to drive an hour and a half to attend my graduation. But I'm grateful for my parents.
Our family lived in housings that was attached to a Chinese restaurant until I was in middle school. Growing up for me, the restaurant kids were my "rich" cousins. We were always a step below them. My parents merely worked for restaurants and had no business of their own; it is still the case.
So touching
This hits so close to home
This really touches home base to me, not personally, but as someone who has a friend as a 'restaurant kid'. He almost committed suicide today so when I watched this, I nearly started crying again because what if he is feeling this way because of his parents neglecting him in a way. Like they pay attention to him but he told me he feels like his parents don't want him around and like he is a burden to them. Idk...
Very touching. Thank you for sharing with honesty and heart. ^^
i'm so thankful for my interviewees willingness to be vulnerable!
Omg this relates to me so much!!
Well done!!
honestly im surprised this video only has 60k views
This is beautiful.
I lost count of how many times I wasn't picked up from school.
One time my mom was running so late picking me up from the library that it ended up closing and I had to wait in the little foyer or vestibule between 2 sets of doors. Lol
I'm not a restaurant kid and I never was but for some reason I can relate to this video so much. My parents worked in a restaurant and for a short time my sister and I were restaurant kids but not really but then because of my grandma being at home that didn't really happen. When I got a little bit more older I could stay at home by myself and did that a little bit but after that someone was always home when we went home. My parents were and are too busy to go to anything like field trips at school or shows, field day etc. but it's fine really. Now my grandma's here and I'm in middle school so I'll probably never be a restaurant kid again :)
Man, i can relate to these guys, or their story at least, as a kid of a restaurant owner and forced to work in his/her/their restaurant as a kid or as an adult...
Even after barely graduated high school I can't even allow myself to can't even take more than 1-2 classes per semester in a Community College near home because my folks needs me to be the waiter/cashier/server/dishwasher from 11:30am to 9pm almost everyday, even on holidays, with no pay or tip and come home too tired to focus on anything academic, than sleep little to wake up early for my 8-10 morning classes.
So sad... Made me cry
I didn't know that I would cry. Why do I feel this pain in my heart
Oh man that kid is the cutest i've ever seen!
