- I created this project for an art class at my high school in Chicago. I wanted to capture the beauty I saw in my peers, but it turned into an experiment about our perception of self halfway through when I realized my classmates were having a variety of reactions; reactions that made me smile and made me sad. I hope you enjoy. And I hope you can see the beauty in yourself as well as others.

The "I will cut you" girl was the most amazing response. It wasn't really a threat. It was a cry for help. She really believes she doesn't deserve a compliment. This girl has been through some bad things in her life which has resulted in a false view of herself. Look at her again. She doesn't even know what she looks like! She's beautiful!

A lot of people have been saying that the girl at 1:41 is rude, and while how she reacted was rude, I feel bad for her because she reacted in a way where she felt like it was a joke on her. She believes that someone calling her beautiful is a joke, because maybe in the past no one’s ever thought she was beautiful and she has bad self esteem. There’s always a reason for these things.

The girl at 3:15 had such an interesting reaction. A half smile to a frown then a deep breath where her shoulders go down. I wonder what she was thinking. Hard to gauge that reaction.
Yes, she looks down and to the side, as to escape from the moment, my guess is she`s a person who has her emotions very tightly wrapped, or another way to say it, she has very high and strong walls to keep most out. You can see it starts to breach her wall and then she regains control.....her eyes look like they cry a lot, when she`s alone.

Beauty is a bit like schrodinger's cat, you can't know wether or not it's true or not but it doesn't matter. You must assume both options are correct. And that's the truth, things are simultaneously beautiful and not beautiful, because beauty isn't an real tangible thing you can assume whichever option you like most and it will be as good as the truth. I had that thought too. I hate being called 'beautiful' because it reminds me of childhood sexual abuse. I wouldn't have reacted violently because I'm a wuss but I would have shot her a nasty look and walked away. I'm definitely NOT beautiful so I always see it as manipulation.

I feel bad for the lady who didn't accept being called "beautiful."
It's safe to assume she isn't used to receiving kindness in such a genuine way; very likely she's been hurt by others to a point where she either doesn't think she's deserving of it or assume she's being tricked again or both. Unfortunately, a lot of people come from similar backgrounds.
Despite that, it's always worth the effort to believe beauty in others even if they don't accept it in the moment. We don't know how her story ends, but we can believe she'll carry those words throughout her life, "I think you're beautiful." And the truth is, she's right.

Some don't believe it, others find it strange or embarrassing, some even don't care or respond aggressively. Others are excited as if they had never been told this in their lives. The wide range of reactions there is is incredible. I believe that each one reflects the life of the person individually and socially.

I’ve done a bit of research on facial expressions and almost every one of these people showed an extremely genuine smile when they were told that. Then some thought about it for a sec and then were a bit uncomfortable lol but the initial raw reactions of happiness were real and were worth all the effort! 😊

I study human behavior and you can tell when she stutters "Of what?" she hides her face, suppresses a smile, and goes right into "tough badass mode" to deflect it. Even as she threatens the photographer, you can see her face lacks true aggression/there's just that look in her eyes that shows a suppression of longing/positive emotion (which everyone before her expresses easily). "Clearly you're being goofy" to me is her way of expressing disbelief that this was a genuine compliment.
In my opinion, this is someone who has likely never been genuinely called "beautiful" before, and if she has it's usually been from people who have just wanted one thing out of her. Even at the very end of the exchange you can see her kind of linger for more reinforcement that, no, this isn't a joke.

heartbreaking indeed. its because most of their life they were told and judged by people around them that they aren't. There's a study that these kind of behavior becomes genetic and can be passed down until the 6th generation. Hope everyone who watched this vid to make sure they do or say something to brighten up people's day everyday! I hope there will be a law preventing negativity and hating. All of these kids are truly beautiful. It's so sad that they don't know. I remember the first time I was told I was beautiful: I was half leaning in a hospital bed as I just got better from a life-threatening disease. I thought that moment changed my life.

Insecurities are overcome by building confidence through action, making yourself better and in process starting having respect for your self. Finding comfort in sweet lies is no better then using drugs or drinking to get temporary fake happines and joy. That girl just don't want to hear comforting lies.

I love the fact that the girl who said she’d cut the woman recording if she kept calling her beautiful was kept in. The owner wasn’t ashamed of her for that, for she knew deep down that regardless of the girl’s seemingly impregnable walls she erected around herself, she is indeed truly beautiful.💜 No amount of shame will ever hide that fact.

My first reaction was maybe she's gay and felt exposed but most likely, she's never been told that she's beautiful or was told the opposite by an abusive family. She felt mocked because she's been taught that she's worthless. She IS beautiful and I wish her love.

Each person's reactions show how undervalued they were... Where was the love that these incredible people deserved? Where were the people that these wonderful beings deserved?... The greatest sadness in watching this video is knowing that everyone probably didn't believe what they were told. Yes, I'm coming here to comment it 8 years later to say: all these people are beautiful in their own ways, all these people deserve to be beautiful in their own ways, it's not about each person's physique and appearance, it's about each one of them and what they are.
1:41 everyone is talking about how rude the girl was but I feel it was like a type of shield. Maybe she was a hard time receiving compliments. MAYBE she doesn’t think the girl meant what she said to her. I feel that maybe it’s hard for her to believe the compliments she receives and that’s why she may have this type of defensive attitude. I’m not saying she has a reason to, because she IS beautiful

Well it's an experiment. She must have sensed it. Sometimes you can really tell if a compliment is genuine or not. Sometimes it's best to give compliments to someone for what he/she's wearing or something good that she's done. That way people won't have to feel insecure about themselves, rather, they'll focus on the things they can do to make their life better and the people around them better. They could take pride in those things no matter what happens to their appearance.
@Ruoshui Liu I agree that it was rude and scary, but everyone has a reason for their actions and decisions, even if it isn’t a good one. I think that the reason here is insecurity, which can be a tough thing to get over. She definitely needs someone to help her with it, though

@@crazy_pyromaniac That's right. It's quite disturbing because we don't hear that often from people. It's basically a threat. Although she didn't mean it literally, it was just her way of saying "shut up, you're lying." Maybe she's used to hearing that from people in her life that's why she uses those words too.
When I was in high school I had school mates and some friends who talked like her. Like saying threats in a joking way. It was funny back then

What I find remarkable is how every human being is beautiful in their own way. I know it sounds cheesy and like it's not actually what people mean when they say it but when you think about it enough and actually analyze people's features they always hit several marks of what someone out there finds extremely attractive, be it a minor feature or a big one. I, for one, have noticed that the vast majority of people have really beautiful eyes and smiles.

1:40 lotsa people asking why she's so mean but honestly, to me it was very obvious that she had very low self-esteem and never saw herself as beautiful. It's not because she 'can't take a compliment' but it's the reaction of being called something you really believed you weren't.

Eh, what people like her are doing is 'hurt them before they hurt me'. Her response was some weird defense mechanism she built up, like she didn't even hesitate a second. People are just self-conscious and immediately try to shield themselves by acting like the bully or jerk.

1:49 this is a perfect example of a person hiding insecurities. People may come off as rude, but I think it’s because they deal with even more things than some people and they want to play it cool and try to fit it. Be nice to people, even if they hurt you. You don’t necessarily have to be friends with them but just give them a smile, or hold the door for them, or even just a hug. Anything can make someone’s day, trust meh😏
