Definitely a commentary on absentee parenting. Otto rebuffs Alicent when she tries to confess her sins to him; Alicent leaves Aegon to cry alone even though he is the only man who looks to her at the small council; Aemond has a mom but goes looking for a mommy; Daemon doesn’t even acknowledge Baela before he leaves forever; Lucerys still recalls his fathers lovingly even though neither could every fully be there for him and Jace.
Well observed 👏👏
I'm not even sure it's a commentary so much as just a realistic depiction.
Not 60-70 years ago all of these things were just how you raised/interacted with your children and had been for millennia so far as we can tell.
Human beings have been terrible parents for essentially all of our existence
Lucerys was the brother who died
Cristin Cole power trippin is an accurate depiction of managers who don’t deserve the power
It’s how managers are created 😝
Not that it matters, but it was Rheaneyra's Erryk that survived and killed himself. He was the one with the slashed thigh who still defended Rhaeneyra, despite the wound.
nice catch
Not me casually realising i have a kink for straightforward, logical and clearly explained criticism on a fkn HotD breakdown video 😭😭😭😂
@@shaunsocha421you kinda look like Sir Erryk/Arryk
I’m here for the wounds.
But why did he do that?! He did protect her with his life. If anything that only proves more to her that she could trust him, that he killed his own brother for her.
22:00 When Otto first says that they have to follow the body, Allicent’s first words are in defense of HER having to do it. Nothing about saving Heleana from it.
I was so mad when she was like “I dOn’T wAnT tO” but Helena who has JUST lost a child has to.
Omg yes. I was thinking the same thing. Like that’s fine for heleana who just witnessed it and it was HER child but once he said she had to do it, it was a huge no
@@ashleyakers4844that’s not the point the writers are trying to make they want you to feel for allicent
@@heydude2121I don't think anyone who watched this episode feels sorry for allicent by the end of this episode
Little finger Harmless … guy literally helped start a war , get Ned Stark beheaded , pushed Eliza out the moon door, helped get Goffrey poisoned… shall I go on ?
He said littlefinger became harmless in the last 2 seasons
Also was responsible for Sansa getting violently used by Ramsey
Also responsible for the first hands murder…!! That started the show 🙉🙉🙈🙈
Cole makes it really hard to side with the Greens lol.
Be careful! That's the hand of the king you're talking about
Daemon made it harder for me to go for the blacks because he said he can’t be responsible for the killing of a child
I hate Cole and I hate Alicent so much. They are the worst human being ever.
@@boutabagg6640@ boutabagg6640 Cole and Daemon are mirror images of each other (even more so than Daemon and Aemond). They both claim to be dedicated to their respective clauses but are both hypocritical in their own ways. Daemon claims to support Rhaenera and his family, yet he undermines her and his own children almost any chance he gets. Cole likewise claims to be a knight bound by duty, yet he breaks his vows like a toddler breaks vases. Both men, when confronted with their mistakes, will not hesitate to blame someone else or downplay the horridness of their actions. Maybe I'm just seeing things, but does anyone else have thoughts.
@@Nikki-sf6bs Not really. Who murdered a child? Not Criston
Christian Cole sounds like the stereotypical "failed nice guy"
the final scene, where Otto says "I don't want to hear about it" is SOOOOOOOO meme worthy i love it
What makes this show so great is also what makes it so hard to watch. It's so nuanced that we don't really have anyone to root for. At lease we can all agree on one thing, that Cole is a piece of shit.
THIS!!
it wasnt half the viewrship..season 1 premiere had 9.9m viewers and season 2 premiere had 7.8m viewers ..it was still the highest watched premiere on Max ever
I really like Aegon in this season. He is becoming one of my favorites.Tom Glynn Carney is doing a great job💚.
Aegon is a fool who wasn't selected by his own father to succeed him. Aegon picking Cole as hand solidifies my statement of his poor judgement.
@@rodneyc8126oh he is absolutely a fool, but some of my favorite people are fools.
Terrible king, but probably fun at parties.
Like George W Bush.
Same. He's comedic relief...as much as one can be on such a show. The actor is doing great. He's not hateable like Joffrey....his character has depth.

Also cole - (proceeds to be side peice for next queen)
It's not a mistake it's called having complex characters. Aegon can be a villain while having positive traits. The uncertainty of who is in the right changes from moment to moment and perspective. If you're team green or black you're missing the point of the story and prove exactly why it's true to the real world. You can forgive evil as long as it's done under a justified pretense or by one that you adore.
THANK YOU!!!
I disagree. You don't have to justify a thing to accept it. Like I can still vote for a guy while acknowledging he has made X mistake(s) and I've never adored a politician in my life, yet I can force myself to go vote for one. I think you're dismissing/precluding the possibility that rational people will arrive at a conclusion based on circumstances, based on incentives, and based on ideology. Like - I can support the Blacks because none of this would be happening if not for the usurpation. So, even Daemon's indiscretion is ultimately the Greens' fault. You can't start a war and kill someone's son and then cry foul when one of your own kids catches a stray bullet. *YOU* (the Greens) may as well have armored them up and slapped them on a horse yourself. Aemond made himself a target knowing kids sleep right next to him, etc. What? Did they expect their opponent not to kill kids? Maybe Aemond shouldn't have killed a kid first?.. Like the "evil" stuff the Blacks are doing now are - *at worst* - in-kind retribution.
I think it says more about autocracy as a system than it does individual peoples' attitudes towards leaders and factions. ALL authoritarian structures are destined to transition power violently or run that risk. You incentivize people to kill by placing so much power in one office AND by having the qualification for that office be who your parent was. It is a system that incentivizes and rewards violence.
@@citizen_wayne You basically just proved my point ✌️
@@extraplain2412 But I'm not uncertain of who is in the right. I'm not missing the point. I'm not justifying shit. I'm (apparently) trying to explain to a grown ass person how cause and effect works. I mean "justified pretense" is pretty much how we organize ourselves, no?
If you punch me, and I sh**t you - objective parties then investigate and perhaps try me in court. But they decide, based on the evidence (pretense, I guess, to you?), whether or not my action was justified. If you think that conviction or exoneration by a jury of peers with an opportunity to gather, observe, and debate evidence is a bad system, I'd really like to know what you'd replace it with.
If you punch me and I sh**t you - that's on *you*, dude. Most places I go free, right? Yes. So, then how do we decide who threw the first punch? Or how do we decide who threw the most meaningful punch(es)?
Lucerys hit Aemond first. *BUT* they both were children. You *could* call that a 'justified pretense'. Or you could say that children's brains aren't developed and their judgement is therefor impaired until a certain age. Which is a fact followed by a logical conclusion. Then Aemond escalated with a rock. Then Lucerys cut out his eye. Then, years later, as an adult, unprovoked, Aemond kills Lucerys.
Is it Viserys' fault for naming Rhaenyra in the first place? Should he have known better? Or would everything have been fine if not for Otto's politicking?
If the statement the show is trying to make is, "Nobody is perfect and even your heroes sin." Then we're fucked. Because I'm 30 and I learned that when I was a small child. If all these millions of dollars and thousands of man hours are being spent just to make that point - this show is utterly worthless as a piece of art. So, no, I don't fucking agree with you and I damn sure didn't prove your point.
@@citizen_wayne Still proving my point 😂🤦
Aegon is like the current Black Noir, just wants a bit of guidance for his role 😅
Season 2 is 10 X better than Season 1. That makes me happy!
Season 1 is why season 2 is enjoyable, it had to build the characters and set everything up for what is happening. Season 1 was amazing
Seeing the Wall sadly reminded me of how pointless ALL the lore and expectation is in GOT S8.
@@mouhalo It was way,way to fast paced. You couldn't feel anything for the characters.
@@ulfeliasson5413 as far as Preludes go it was certainly a great prelude but I'm glad we can now spend time with these characters and it finally feels like early GOT
@@ulfeliasson5413 hmm i dont think so. Yeah maybe they could’ve added stuff but i got enough to know who are who and what motivates them. Thats enough to jump on the war no need for two seasons of the main characters being kids or not born yet
I feel like Ser Criston Cole acted out of shame and was so angry with himself that he failed to fulfill his duty to protect The Greens, and that reflected on the way he pushed Ser Erryk to go after Rhaneyra by himself to Dragonstone.
He sent Ser Erryk to Dragonstone on a suicide mission, knowing that even if he were to succeed in killing Rhaenyra that he would be highly unlikely to make it out alive.
After the argument they just had over who was where and why, Cole is reasonably certain that Erryk at least suspects Cole is sleeping with the Queen Dowager, and thus he sends him on a mission that, if successful, helps their cause and if not, fans the flames of war and ties up a loose end in a way that's "neater" than killing him outright or paying an assassin.
Remember, Cole's hatred for the Blacks is purely "scorned lover" syndrome.
*ARRYK 🤦♂️
He didn’t send sir erryk 💀💀💀

The same master who kicked him last episode? The dog was looking up at "Cheese"

@@jedirayden Yeah, but he sad doggo.
I think Aegon is a bad king because he was never trained to be a king. Rhaenyra was always the chosen heir; why would Aegon be trained? Granted, his father didn't seem very involved in teaching him how to be a lord or king. But he never backtracked on Rhaenyra being the true heir.
Allicent was worried for Aegon, not because he would be king, but that Rhaenyra could possibly kill him, his siblings, and his children to fully secure her claim to the throne. Allicent was surprised when she went to the Small Council meeting to tell them what King Viserys said Aegon on his deathbed, only to find out that most of the Small Council had already had plans to usurp the throne.
alicent manipulated him for her selfish reasons. aegon just wanted to live the life of a privileged highborn who drank & got down with prostitutes in flee bottom🤣. he didn’t want any of this shit. Alison was crazy for putting that thought in her son’s mind in the first place cuz i doubt rheanera would’ve done any of that
Aegon was self indulgent and nihillistic, he is a product of Otto and ALicent but Alicent nor Otto didnt even try to teach him leadership skills,
@@SonderDAzeX 💯
Otto is once again removed as the Hand, for how many times now?😅😅😅
The acting across the board has been excellent this season tom , Rhys ,and the twins killed it👏🏽👏🏽.
I like how the twins in the beginning, the little boy and the little girl you can’t tell them apart and in the end, both Erick so you can’t tell apart
Episode 2 had the best acting of all last season. Aegon, Allicent, Otto, fucking destroyed theirs scenes. And hats-off to the writers and Claire the director. What a killer episode
Aegon WILL lose respect for Alicent once he finds out shes fking his hand (Criston) 💀 choosing Cole was the WORST decision she couldve made, she wont be able to control Aegon.

Team black all the way, Otto is poison to everyone
“They drew first blood, not me.” Rambo

I actually really like the imbalance of sympathy because we know how it ends
Dayrn was spitting facts she was an awesome addition!
The generational trauma is real also can we talk about how daemon literally doesn't care about his daughter.
Generational trauma isn’t real lol
@@scotthorvath5146tell that to people whose parents survived wars.
@@scotthorvath5146it literally is lol there’s plenty of studies
That’s why you love or hate him. …. He’s not attached to anybody but what he wants.
Daughter(s),
Why ask a guest their opinion on something, and then just immediately interrupt them to disagree with what they say? Lol
Larys Strong planted the idea of replacing the hand of the king thinking that HE would get the job, thinkingthatthe king wouldbe more discerning. He's in for a surprise.
Alicent's anger at Rhaenyra had more to do with jealousy than puritanism. She couches it under the guise of moral superiority. But ultimately, she's pissed that her sister got the guy that she had a crush on. And that drives her resentments much more than Rhaenyra breaking any oaths or committing any sin.
And then Rhaenyra's dismissive treatment of both Cole and Alicent created a stronger bond between Alicent and her unrequited love.
Alicent not only had to endure being at Viserys' beck and call at all hours of the night, but she also suffered the indignity of Larys' fetishes. Alicent's needs or wants are never taken into consideration, but those of Rhaenyra are always acceded to. Of course Alicent feels resentment.
Nobody wins when the family feuds ❤
I don't think season 1 conveyed the Greens as the true villians. It's always been a grey area and non-bias.
Exactly. They literally showed how Alicent was a victim and still loved Rhaenyra despite the whole being heir situation. This season is diving deeper into how both sides get caught up in the war but are still humans with regrets and empathy to the other side (well some of them at least)
Most book readers would agree that they filed the edges off Team Black and went in extra on the Team Green characters so it feels like they’re going out of their way to make Team Green the villains. Kinda hoping they start to flip it in season 2 and make it more grey. So far so good!
Considering how Otto set everything up for the Greens to take power in order for his bloodline to rule, which causes the Dance of Dragons, the Greens are very much the villains
It's all due to Otto Hightower's manipulations just to get his grandson on the throne. Both sides have their faults but it's Otto that is the root of the division of House Targaryen.
@@berserk4soulsthe books are written by maesters. They're unreliable narrators. I'd explain it more, but that's gonna get into spoiler territory
Helaena reminds me a lot of Cassandra from greek mythology she can see the future but no one listens to her.

Erryk pointing Erryk is brilliant!
Alan was a main character in "Raised by Wolves", he has to be important.
Hugh was a main character in "Warrior", he'll also be important.
Depending on how detailed her visions are Helena can be seen as probably the most tragic character in the series. Imagine being able to see the future and being powerless to stop it because you damn near have no agency.
Couldnt the king just stood every ratcatcher in a line and had the queen walk down it until she spotted cheese? Seems much easier and less costly...
THANKS for this, ScreenCrush Gang!!!! It was good to have the Martin scholar on--this should happen again!!!
I didn't know about the "HoT-D" pronunciation! :)
I'm with Ryan and the Martin scholar--I'm glad the Queen got some good lovin'!!!
"THAT" villain is Criston Cole.
they did make the greens a bit too evil with all the rape, and aegon watching his bastard in the child fighting pits...but I like how they're correcting now, it'll make the ending less shocking
Same we can feel bad for them but, they are still terrible people.
31:11 people are fed up with waiting 101 years between seasons, these big streaming shows have been dragging the gaps out longer and longer and people just can't be bothered to recap, catch-up or try and remember why they were enjoying the show anymore.
Agree with Daryn, good point.. Aegon is basically a Nepo baby in the wrong position.
Ammon didn't want to kill his cousin, he only wanted to mess with him for taking his eye. Even his own brother made fun of him along with his cousins. Once his stunt got his cousin killed, he couldn't go back now.
That Aemond scene was 🤭🤭🤭
One little tidbit....Cheese, himself - while he is AWFUL and is ultimately hanged with the other rat catchers and WAS the one rat catcher helping in killing the little prince. Did anyone notice that while his body hung on the wall, his poor little dog sat there for him, looking up at him as if he'd come down. That was heartbreaking. 😢
Its interesting where the writers are taking us. The first season, every character was flawed yet doing bad things for acts of self service. This season, they're clearly taking us a route where daemon causes all the problems in one camp while crispy Cole doing the evil on the other side.
It’s not just Viserys and Alicent that failed Aegon II. His grandfather, Otto, is also to blame. He’s more to blame IMO. He’s been presented to us as this master chess player in the ‘great game’, but not preparing Aegon for the possibility of rule was a mistake from the onset. In fact, Aemond and Aegon’s childhood were fails of the Hightowers. Aemond becoming driven to excel was a happy accident, but he still wasn’t steered to ruling. He should have groomed his grandsons for greatness since childhood, one inheriting the thrown and one shielding the realm as a proper Hand, or Master of something else on the Small Council.
The Daemon vs. Aemond “feud” is completely one sided. They even show Aemond’s delusion when he’s talking to that sex worker.
I reread the book and so it is close to the storyline. Green is my favorite color (Green Bay Packers, 💚 and Boston Celtics) but I love the Black's in this story. ❤
I agree that they seem to be hand waving the SA and Aegon's illegitimate children in the fighting pits and brothels to present him more favorably. I think it would have helped a bit if they had shown that he was trying to clean up his act now that he is king, but if anything him being drunk with his friends made it seem like he hadn't changed at all.
With closed captioning on, Rhaenera yells Eryyk! Before he stabs himself and that is her Eryyk
The fact that cole didnt want to be Rayneras side peace but becomes Allison's side peace is crazy to me hes a little man boy whos still doesn't know how to clean his undies
Loved this format! Would love to see more of this, especially with these 2 gals.
Why do I always have to look for your videos?? I'm definitely subscribed.
I totally disagree about the show bias! Despite the books being told by the Green favoring maesters, the Blacks come out much better in there as well!
The thought that the acolyte and house of the dragon could be blending together in someone’s mind is outrageous. That’s a huge insult to the writers of house of the Dragon.

I am also guilty of starting yesterday … but going forward I will watch every Sunday…
Fun fact: ollena Tyrell also has 2 household guards that are twins named arryk and erryk
I think they’ve done a good job of balancing both sides with morally grey characters. Dont think the show has leaned one way or the other
Amazing how there are two sets of twins this year. Twin kings guard. Twin Lannister brothers.
Man, if I was the Greens twin…the second I got found out, I’d switch sides! 😝😝😝
The EUROs football (soccer) tournament is happening these days, and most likely had a huge effect on the views.
Varys (Spider) - Chaotic Good
Littlefinger - Chaotic Neutral
Larys (Clubfoot) - Chaotic Evil
What would you categorize Myasaria as?
@@SonderDAzeXGood question. She seems to be Neutral Good. Her intentions and concerns are often empathetic and to protect herself, but not for any personal gain. If anything, all she has wanted was her emancipation, and even when she had the opportunity to be freed (which was a relief to her after Daemon left and she was worried the arrangement wouldn’t be honored), she didn’t. She stops herself when she notices something is awry with the arrival of Arryk trying to disguise himself as Erryk to assassinate Rhaenyra and returns to warn everyone rather than just leave on the ship.
I don’t know about other people, but I know for me personally I didn’t tune into the Premier because I can’t afford all these streaming platforms. Only way I can find out what happens is by watching 7 different channels about the little things, I might’ve missed in the episodes 😂
Yea but the book was slated in the greens way due to the maesters being g from Oldrown.
The lack of Daeron the Daring is the biggest reason why the Greens are so unsympathetic. This will change come S3.
Loving this season. Biggest complaint is not mentioning Daeron sooner - so keeping an eye on that. But love everything else. Acting is SUPERB
How are the greens sympathetic? They are power hungry.
So is rhaenyra

@emojicaptain7285 yeah but she has the obligation to fulfill the prophecy which was etched into that valerian blade. All the hightower is to get the iron throne
@@marlonestrella5054 Her illegitimate children ascend to the throne, and the kingdom will be destroyed
Not completely true. For Otto yes, but overall no. In the books Aegon ii(the king the Greens are trying to push) was actually fine with Rhaenyra ruling but backtracks when he is rightfully told that Daemon and Rhaenyra would kill him as he is a threat to her reign. Both sides do horrific war crimes for their special interests. There really should not be one side to route for but the show clearly makes the side of Rhaenyra to be the right one which should not be the case.
Look, I get why Cole is mad, I do. You made a vow. You were seduced, thought you were in love, and rhaneyra felt differently. But he's making it seem as if he was forced to be with rhaneyra when he had a choice. He could've said no, I think now at this point he's acting like a baby
He’s a grown man. He can reject a young girl.
@klonklone7787 I literally said "he could've said no" , I feel like he's acting that way because he was a virgin to but he fell in love. He's definitely annoying at this point
Nyra was 14 he was 20
@alexkendall8496 16 and 23.
We live in a "binge" society now. Most people aren't interested in tuning in weekly. I think most people want to let a couple episodes build up, or potentially, the whole season before they start watching. I think that played a role in episode one having lower viewership.
I'm thinking "The Search for Love" battle between Erik and Arik is an allegory for the larger theme of the show, that the fighting between the two sides of the family us going to destroy the House. Of course, all of the characters are going to completely miss the significance of it
As was the Blackwood and Bracken feud (the boy Blackwood stabbing the adult Bracken in the royal court) in season 1. Lots of foreshadowing. Not as well done as GoT, but hey nothing is.
Its gonna be the blind leading the blind with Aegon and Cole and thats the scariest thing for the realm 😭
I’m going to go back and watch this episode again, but until I do, who was the older man with his wife in sick child? I was going through colonoscopy prep and was in and out of watching the show. I’m assuming since they put him in that episode like that he hast to be an important player in time to come.
Sir Hugh is a blacksmith who happens to be a bastard child. You may notice that he has white hair. He was the guy who petitioned king Aegon for payment, on behalf of all the blacksmiths in the previous episode. You are absolutely right that he will turn out to be important later but I don't want to spoil the surprise for you.
RIP Erryk and Arryk🙏🫡
Team black book and show, burn them all. Helena is the only green worth saving. Deamon didn't deserve that.
Ser Criston Cole, the Queen Slayer!
How can you not tell the difference between Erryk and Arryk. The twin protecting the queen was the good one and was the one stabbed in the leg/knee. It’s really not that hard.
"Early Game of Thrones" means Game of
Thrones translated from legitimate source material. I think this show is excellent and I wholeheartedly agree about early Game of Thrones.
The 2 brothers duying was so sad 😭 to me. I loved them both and they were so handsome 💙💙💙
I see the reverse. The Greens are going through character assassination at the hands of the showrunners as compared to the books. The mistake the showrunners are trying to reverse is Aemond. Aemond became hugely popular and is the single greatest reason why there're so many team Green people. The show-runners are not going to repeat that mistake. It's the reason why we haven't seen Sunfyre the dragon. Sunfyre has a big part in the book. Big changes. Spoiler alert. All the ratcatchers were executed not just those in the Red Keep. Alicent wanted the true name of Blood so she could bathe in the blood of his family. They send Daemon to Harrenhall when he was already there. Mysaria was in King's Landing and was the one who hired B&C to kill Aegon's son Jaehaerys. Otto never scolded Aegon. After several defeats to their allies Aegon was forced to fire Otto, ripping the Hand of the King pin from his chest.
Alicent should be punished as she started a war for what she currently is indulging in. Stop pitying the wicked.
The open doublet with the dragons separated is his family blowing up. At the end of the episode none of the Greens are standing together.
I noticed that also, this war was started and escalated by second born princes, not kings or queens.
There is something wrong with the jewellery the greens are wearing, they aways seem to be itching and having irritation from it. Alicents necklace then aegons ring
It's cursed lol... they're not suppose to be on the throne lol
That fake gold!😂😂😂
It was Father's Day I was out of town 🤷🏻♂️ just a bad weekend to start the show on
It made me so mad that Alicent didn’t go hug Aegon when she found him sobbing like a baby. I know he’s done deplorable things, but I feel a lot of sympathy towards him. Viserys ignored him, and Alicent is just cruel to him most of the time.
You are able to side with the greens if you think of it as a historical perspective, the high towers were the ruling family that held the realm together for thousands of years before the Targaryen came and started attacking and killing everybody with their dragons. These newcomers from across the sea, came and insisted that they should be in power and threatened to burn, you your friends and family if you didn’t submit to them. And now if you look at it from their perspective, they are just trying to get rid of this usurper reign of terror in anyway they can.
I really like aegon this season, he’s complicated really interesting, hilarious, and like REAL, and tom glynn-carney is awesome
All that Family Drama created by the real villain Otto Hightower.
I think HOTD is missing a lot comparted to Original. One thing though was the compelling stories about the kids survival. Im not seeing any of that. The time jumps could account for that maybe. Hopefully next series will make up for some.
I live in NYC. I didn’t see or hear of the Empire State Building dragon or the Brooklyn bridge banners.
I’m sorry but that Arryck v Erryck fight was messed up!! MESSED UP! Death to the Green Team!! And no I do t feel sorry for Alicent AT ALL!!
Yeah from a person who still cries about how things went for Fred and George at the battle of Hogwarts.
I've never felt any sympathy for Alicent or any green but Helena. They are power hungry hypocrites.
Many friends waiting until all episodes drop to binge
