- Adam welcomes a new member to the Tested family: Boston Dynamics' Spot robot! All throughout this year, Adam will be conducting builds and projects with Spot, integrating it into the workshop and taking it on adventures in the field. The first thing to do is test Spot's capabilities at an outdoor training course! Our Year with Spot commences!
Note: This is not a sponsored video. Boston Dynamics has leased Spot to Adam Savage as part of their early adopter program. While Tested is chronicling some of Adam's experience with the robot, there is no obligation for Tested (or Adam) to publish videos, photos or media of any kind.

Adam is the perfect person to field test technology like this: a tech geek that will use Spot for things the developers would never think of.
Absolutely! I ended up watching the rickshaw video before this one, but it's cool to see how well he (it?) handles obstacles, stairs, etc. I wonder what kind of battery life this thing has? Just a sidenote, there was a Hollywood film from 2018 that was along these same lines, but involved a motorcycle racer kid, that hooked up with an escaped military robotic dog that had some really fierce capabilities. It's pretty much all CGI, and a cheesy movie to boot, but still pretty cool. Search IMDB for A.X.L. 😉

When you look at the way Spot picks his way over rocks, with that high stepping gate, its the way people walk blindfolded in an unfamiliar location. Lifting your feet high to avoid tripping, and placing them down. Incredible really.
But also highlights how much brain power animals use just moving around with our normal grace.

The applications of SPOT are going to be ground-breaking. I'm so excited to see how they improve it from here.
Honestly the applications of SPOT are not going to be ground-breaking, where SPOT is going to make the biggest impact is in places where an application specific solution is too expensive to develop but SPOT as a cost effective universal solution that is capable. The biggest issue with bringing robotics into the every day work force has always been the face that they are very expensive and typically application specific.
Now I use the word "cost effective" however I can not find an MSRP for SPOT anywhere. The best I can find is "Price of a luxury car".... So that could mean anywhere from $60,000 to $120,000 and up. That's actually cheep in the world of industrial robots when you consider typical industrial robots start at that price point for just the hard ware and still needs to be setup and installed.
I do think it's a bit troublesome that they have not listed a price publicly. My theory is they don't know how to price it and right now they are playing favorites when it comes to clients since the number of manufactured units can not be that high. Without a listed price, and good NDA's it's easy to gouge the enthusiastic clients and to practically give them away to your flagship clients. It also prevents a lot of bad press if some jack ass buys one and uses it to terrorize people ether for some CZcams video, or literally terrorism.
They my also be very tight with sales right now as I think it is inevitable that Boston Dynamics will get into a lawsuit/patent battle with ether a Japanese or Chinese manufacture who will build a cheaper clone.
Yup warfare will never be the same with armored robotic canines walking around mounted with some sort of automatic weaponry

Can we please not turn this comment thread into *another* "The robots are going to take our jobs and be super-mega-death military tech and will kill us all like Terminator" thing?
I've seen some variation of those comments a thousand times on the Boston Dynamics videos or anything involving SPOT, and I'm just tired of it at this point.
SPOT is already being used in situations where it would be dangerous or bad to send a human in, some examples are search and rescue, and inspection of hazmat locations for damage.
My question is: Does Boston Dynamic collect all the failure data(accidents lets say) from the testers around the world in order to make it more capable using Big Data analysis?
Big Data analysis? Please don't use enterprise buzzwords. There's probably some training data collection going on though.
They are for sure collecting data in order to improve their current and future products for better customer experience.

“Tactically drive backwards in high heels”? I must have missed that episode
Driving in heels is apparently harder than one would think...
Step 1: Remove High Heels
It was a personal thing Adam wanted to be able to do for future use.
Yup. It did happen.
Not an episode, it's just something he does in his free time.
In case they ever turn on us, here is what we can learn from this video:
- put big sharp rocks EVERYWHERE. It will slow them down immensely or they might even completely fail to get over them.
- make save houses only accessible by narrow crawl spaces. Looks like they will definitely fail at at a certain height. (Maybe someone can actually calculate the height at 4:10 by what information is given in the video)
- and finally: traps with slippery slopes that end at a pit or something like that might work pretty good.
If they actually implement a general AI capable of self improvements into this its game over my dude.
Nah dawg. Moats in every household.
If you're waiting for them to turn on you, it's already too late for you. Don't worry you won't see them coming.

They say dogs get their balance from a tail so it might actually improve it
@@FLPhotoCatcher not so sure about that.
A young puppy wouldn't have done any better than Spot did.
Give the robot some quality time with those rocks, and it'll soon be able to cruise up those rocks like the real thing.
Claws would be a better addition, I say.
@Artemus Over Easy agreed.
With a computer that can learn, it would advance it's agility whenever the opportunity presented itself.
I had to teach a collie how to climb stairs, and that was in one evening.
I had a beagle that would climb a stack of firewood, to look over the fence, just to bark at squirrels next door!
If someone was to take this thing in as a bona-fide pet, it would have whatever skills that the master would teach it.
One might take it hunting, one might use it for herding animals, one might use it for support and entertainment.
I'd really like to see one sit and shake hands, or fetch a ball, or even play tug-of-war!
Just shows how incredibly difficult automating the task of walking really is. One of the most advanced quadrupedal robots in the world struggling to get over terrain Adam Savage casually walks over without a second thought
