Finally our robotics course is out. We worked on this course for more than 10 months - sabinmathew.com/ . Please check it out if you are keen to start your career in robotics. In this crawling robot development course you will learn things practically. During the robot development journey you will automatically learn many fundamentals of robotics.
You may also check out the detailed article I have written about the Spot robot here - sabinmathew.com/spot-robot-design-and-engineering/ Cheer Sabin

Note that we have forwards kness but BACKWARDS ankles. This is why we are able to create reaction force with the ground. If Spot was also going to have three joints (hip knee ankle) I suspect it would also have received a forwards knee and backwards ankle configuration.

This is an amazing animation; it shows great mechanical principals being used in modern robotics. I must ask, how is power transferred to the lower leg motors? Is it just flexible cords, or does data and power get sent through the motors themselves? I am learning about robotic arms, but it has always been one of my biggest robotics questions. I need to visualize what is happening, to get a good understanding, and you are the best person I know for detailed, and understandable animations.

They should make the legs more versitile. So they can switch between forward or backward bend as needed.
It would be able to crab walk if needed and open up a whole new set of possibilities for the machine.

Why not just have a rounded back. Easier to then turn upright because it wouldn't rest on its back. Round allows it to roll and rock and is more structurally strong. Flat allows a break if it land on a sharp surface. Round, glances off.

There is no reason for colliding with stairs besides very poor control!
How many humans have you seen colliding with stairs? or animals having problems with stairs or rock climbing?
It might be easier for forward bending but it won't be problematic in the other case.
Also usually backward bending has an advantage in fast running.
