You might think you already know Spot, the robot dog from Boston Dynamics. Maybe you saw a viral video of it opening a door, or dragging a truck, or dancing. But now, this robot has hit a HUGE milestone... Spot got a job!
These robots are now out in the real world doing real work, for fire departments, factories, defunct nuclear power plants like Fukushima, ancient ruins like Pompeii, deep mines, and, more controversially, police departments. You might already be starting to see robot dogs walking around, and even if you’re not, they’re starting to affect your life.
That’s why we went to visit Boston Dynamics. In this video, we put Spot to the test, to show you what it’s really capable of, and how our future could be even better with robot dogs.

All it ends with is the robot with the back-attachment application. Much like the production of a jeep -- just when the military buys in -- they'll freely attach the weaponization to the jeep. So, it doesn't really matter, by the end of the day, if the tools prove usefulness -- any actors (good or bad) will make use of it.
Companies who pledge not to sell robots to certain big spending customers will lose business opportunities to less idealistic competitors.
I think most new technologies in-and-of themselves are neither good nor evil - it's how we use them!
"In Pompeii, Spot is inspecting graver robber tunnels for police" made it sound like the robbers bought a Spot to make sure their tunnels were safe 😂😂😂

LOVE... YOUR... VIDEOS... The level of respect for the clarity of information and showing the viewers all sides of a subject (while keeping it as optimistic or at leats questioning as possible) is INSANE. All I can say is: Never stop making content and we need more Cleos in this world.

Whenever a new video is out from Cleo, you always know its gonna be a good one! Also the matching colours is hilarious :)
The thing to realize is that for *most* inspections tasks it's far cheaper to mount 50 cameras all over the building that will do non-stop monitoring, rather than have 1 super fancy camera walking around, *but* some of my favourite examples where it actually makes sense to use these robots is to handle cases you didn't plan for as a relatively capable 'remote presence' platform. I think this is how a bunch of swiss or austrian hydroelectric plants were planning/thinking of using them. Most of them don't have a constant human presence, and they do have a bunch of monitoring installed although the installations themselves are old and have a lot of old equipment, so when something is wrong a human has to drive there to check it out (with some of them being fairly remote). The idea was that having something like spot in each of those could allow better triaging.
How will cameras tell you if there is a gas leak? How will fixed cameras carry out detailed close up inspections of operating machinery? How will a bunch of fixed camaras locate the exact site of a radiation leak?
Cameras are for general surveillance, not for inspections.
@@enadegheeghaghe6369 I'm not sure what point you're trying to make. Optical cameras may not be able to detect a gas leak, but other static sensors can without needing a robot dog.
it's pretty useless as drones can do all those tasks but better.... Your robot can walk over over gravel and navigate through rocks, good....but drones can just FLY over anything.
@@hasrataulakh drones are great indeed as long as you don't need to touch anything (which often indeed is the case). And to be fair, I haven't seen any indoor drone based remote presence solutions, but at the same time drones have gotten significantly better are navigating tight spaces compared to a couple of years ago... so I do think there is potential there.
I love it when Cleo has such a “childlike curiosity & energy” on whatever topic she’s talking about; she seems like such a fun & nice person to be friends with, and probably also an amazing conversationalist.

My robot human keeps asking for a pet obot dog, but I just know all the care (changing the oil, ordering replacement parts, making messes for it to clean up) will all fall on me. Maybe when my human robot is a little older...

We have one of these robot dogs at one of the facilities here at GRC. It's used to check on machinery that is too loud for humans to check on while it's running, even with hearing protection. The robot dog can even go up and down stairs lol

I dunno, DARPA paid for most of their research already. I expect the public stance is so Uncle Sam gets the hint and stops trying.
They are aimed more at safety and commercial applications. They'll be able to stand firm on that stance because if the government wanted to find a way to weaponize something like this then they'll be able to figure it out on their own if they thought it was necessary...
Boston Dynamics is an American company owned by South Korean Hyundai. Prior to being sold to Hyundai, they belonged to Japanese SoftBank, and before that to Google.
It was specifically at Google's insistence that Boston Dynamics got out of military-related research and development. It is hard to see them going back. Although there are all sorts of restrictions on how much Korea can influence the operation of the company, Boston Dynamics is still foreign-owned.

I really like the use cases with factories, mines, and nuclear plants as it really seems those use cases are heavily based in the idea of robots helping humans. However, the military and police use cases for this is appalling and pretty terrifying as those are based in the idea of suppressing humans. The pack mule idea and a more bomb-sniffing variant I think is totally fine, but that in my opinion is an extremely slippery slope and will lead to more human suppressing variants. Unfortunately there’s nothing we can do about that slippery slope. Boston Dynamics might be on board with the right ideals, but the military, police, and greedy corporations who will have access to similar technology very soon will NOT carry those same ideals.
Fortunately "Spot" hasn't learnt to deal with slippery slopes.....yet lol.
But yeah, the CCP was already using them to patrol the streets during covid lockdown to make sure there were no sick and starving people on the streets......Who'd escaped from the apartments they were welded into to look for food rather than starve to death "for the good of the community".
I don't think they were weaponised just fitted with a loud speaker telling people to stay inside. But they were still being used in somewhat of an evil capacity. 🤷♂😕
Since when did the perception of police go from protecting and serving to suppressing? How is surveilling a holed-up murderer a suppression mission? You would deny our military better tools for protecting and defending our country because you think it’s a bad ideal? That’s a pretty misguided understanding of their purpose.
@@johnk6598 there's a very fine line between "protecting" a country and general meddling in politics. Russian internal propaganda has explained the invasion on Ukraine as "protecting" the Russian citizens living in the area. And the US is always sending out missions into the middle east with questionable results. Not to mention alot of conflicts don't have a 'right' and 'wrong' side.
Enabling robotics into military uses causes as much harm as it has potential to do good, if not more. You think that the moment a company starts producing robots with guns, that terrorist organisations and criminals don't immediately have access to them too?
@@johnk6598 Top it up. What would you do if the enemy has the similar robots? Let's say Russia sending waves of robots in the Ukraine. That will be a problem. Not that Russia will do something like that since Russia doesn't value human life. For them human meat is cheap.

About the robots, I think we're gonna reach a phase that it will be very normal to see them more often in our daily life, helping and doing stuff in an easier faster way, the real problem that regulating the use of them, that will be the hardest part of the deal.

This technology can be adapted for use by fire departments for search and rescue. This is something I would like to see developed soon to reduce the threat to live firefighters.

I just attended GeoWeek this week in Denver. A company there showed off spot with advanced lidar custom made on the platform to capture scans up to a centimeter in hard to reach environment's, factories, and even pipelines. There were so many other possibilities. Spots been looking good these last few years can't wait to see how it evolves in the near future.

As far as the weapons discussion, unfortunately, just like the 3D printing gun debacle, some things will happen in the future that shed negative light on robotics. It is important to have coverage like this video highlighting the robot as a platform for great high-impact things, not something designed to be weaponized.

Nah, just stick my camera on the end of it. You can use flow motion to augment the mapping capabilities. Structure from motion video is pretty powerful.
Or just force sensing so it can tell if something is behind it while it wags.

I'm not a fan of these type of video's. They feel more like an advertisement for the company involved instead of it having much journalistic value. To put it bluntly, it feels like a giddy school girl that goes out on a field trip to a company and then gives a presentation about it, based on the information that came from the brochures that the company gave to take home. No real investigation into the pro's and con's of this technology and the company that is selling it to other companies and governments and the moral responsibilities that come with that. Just a simple PR statement where Boston Dynamics states that they do not support the weaponization of their robots. And that's it, no further questioning.

So, what is the “battery life” for a robot dog? And is it smart enough to return home when the battery is getting low?
Are all of its routines and capabilities built in, or does it offer the ability to teach it new things (and new things doesn’t mean using its built in capabilities to do a new task)?
