Have you ever wondered how every MLS team got its Logo? Well I did too!
I wanted to know what every Soccer Logo looked like through the years, season to season, so I decided to take an unreasonably long time to research each team and create this video. Hopefully you learn a thing or two, too! Each team is listed in the order that they were founded or became a part of the MLS. I hope you enjoy the evolution of every MLS logo! The league has come a long way!
In the future be sure to check back and find the playlist with future teams added to the MLS as the league expands, and clubs rebrand or change their logo designs!

The Old NE Revolution and Columbus Crew logos were peak definition of originality and iconic
I would have been fine for those to stay forever!
True. The new NER Logo is overloaded and hardly recognizeable from afar.
Revs is literally just a ripoff of the 1994 World Cup logo lol
@@Pikabo0 And? It's one of the most soulful Badges of any USA soccer team
Chicago Fire's original was class as well.
I'm honestly still sad that the Crew changed from their circle logo to the new one. Nothing wrong with the new one really and I understand that the league has a lot of circles but the Crew one was by far my favourite in the league and tbh one of my favourites in the sport in general
Agreed! Thanks for checking out the video!
Cry me a river
@@sebastianarteaga864 can't believe I found the one fan that likes that bullshit new one
💯
Can't believe the Crew got rid of that second badge, so many layers (throwback to the original crest, Ohio flag circles, etc)
Yeah as a non crew fan, I too really liked that badge!
Largely was due to the new ownership I think. The second badge was introduced during the time of Anthony Precourt owning the team, who wanted to move the team to Austin originally. After big fan protests, a new ownership group bought the Crew, and Precourt got an expansion team in Austin. The new badge may have been the new ownership trying to distance the club from Precourt.
Along with that they wanted to change the name of the club to Columbus SC, so keeping the second badge wouldn't have worked very well if they rebranded to that.
Tldr, in the end it wasn't very necessary this rebrand lol, as the Crew didn't drop the Crew part of their name.
The original Fire logo was 🔥. No need to change it. Also bring back the name Impact. Like it or not that's part of team history. You forget to mention the tree in Austin FC haves 11 leaves for each player.
Ahh nice catch on Austin!
And no notes on the other things! You’d have my vote!
Thank your reminding everyone of the glory of the Pre-MLS Sounders logo.
I literally cannot get enough of it lol maybe my favorite logo of all time! 😂
A few details. The Philadelphia Union colors mirror the City flag of Philly. The Colorado Rapids new colors match those of the Colorado Avalanche, who have the same owner. The New England Revolution original logo is somewhat of a tribute to the logo of the 1994 World Cup, they are pretty close to each other.
Love those!! Thanks for sharing!
Of all the current badges Minnesota is my favourite. Many redesigns have made things worse though.
Yeah Minnesota is up in the top tier for me too! Great design!!
I personally still like the old Nashville logo and like how the old logo uses the stripes as strings on a guitar. Great video btw!
Nice! I do like that older logo! I hadn’t picked up that it was like guitar strings! Very cool!
I think it’s great that the MLS has grown from what it started as which was the definition of a Mickey Mouse league but I always thought that trying to teams trying to Europeanise themselves came across as kinda pretentious. I like when teams keep a bit of Americana in them like the sounders, the fire, the crew etc. I won’t complain about team names like Toronto FC, Nashville SC, etc because that’s just the city name, fine but I think a lot of the names have been changed not really realising that a lot of the suffixes of European teams have a specific meaning. United is generally a merging of two teams. Sporting is generally because the football team is a branch of an all around sports club. Real means royal and is named so because of an affiliation with the Spanish crown. I get that as a league they want to be taken more seriously but that starts with the football, not the team names. I think if they kept names like the wizards, the burn, the impact then it’d give the league a more unique identity in the football world.
Yeah NGL the World Cup got me back into a Football mood and I'm researching leagues to follow. The MLS stood out as a potentially cool one. And as a non-US citizen, I think the cheesyness of the more Americanized games is part of the charm that draws me to it. If I'm going to follow US sports, I *want* my games to be The CityA Somethings vs The City B Somethingelses. It's part of US sports culture and has that foreign appeal to me that shit like City FC doesn't since I can just watch City FC at home in my country.
The use of "FC" is understandable since that is a throwback to a tradition for American soccer clubs since the early 20th century... back when US Soccer was known as the US Football Association and American football hasn't taken over as the dominant code.
The use of "United" is justified in the case of DC United and Minnesota United. The former because Washington, DC is the capital of the *United* States, the latter because the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are united under one team.
I think the one that makes sense the most is Inter Miami because it actually represents the cultural diversity of the area. A lot of MLS teams should stick with brand nicknames that represent their city better though.
ehhhhh, whilst there are a fair few teams historically called united which are a merger there's a lot in turn that aren't and are just a name change for a club to represent the wider area not really having to do with any merger, the main united teams you'd think of like Manchester, Leeds and West Ham United are name changes and successor clubs to another but aren't mergers. Inter Miami and Club de Foot Montreal are just pretentiousness for the sake of it though aye 100%
@@mb9822 okay fair enough but a lot of them you have to admit sound more like something that someone would name their EPL fantasy team. I had a guy in the World Cup dream team league call his team Spartac Tesco. It has nothing to do with MLS team names but I just thought that was funny
Love the whole Seattle Sounders section 😂
Haha thanks! 😂
The Austin FC oak tree is actually a specific tree, “The Treaty Oak” which is a historic tree still standing in downtown Austin.
Oh wow, did not know that! Thank you for sharing. I would love to look more into the tree oak, and the way that plays in historically, and Austin!
Small change , San Jose earthquakes red in the new logo symbolizes it’s history as the quakes since their first color was red
I don't like the trend of going with the shields that most teams have done recently. I personally think the original New England Revolution logo is the best.
Some of the OG logos are my favorite for sure! Unique and good on a soccer kit!
I'm argentine, and i wish for american soccer to become more popular, since i love this sport and i believe it would be interesting to see America becoming more competitive in the international level.
This new "DC United" logo is my favourite, simple yet effective. It has the essence of football (soccer) in it. And, as a River Plate fan, the combination of red and black and white colours is the most beautiful to me.
Thanks for watching! Yeah I hope soccer keeps growing here! Already huge gains in the last 15 years since I began watching!
D.C. United is also like the worst team in the mls lol
The Houston Dynamo logo reminds me of the last and current WGN Sports logo. The one that they debuted for the 2018 Cubs opening day. The hexagon. I didn’t mind it, I liked it and the graphics design.
Great video dude! I spent some time playing in the USL, when some of these teams were still in that league. Really cool to see those old logos for the first time since then.
That’s awesome! It’s crazy how things have grown and changed even in the last few years! Thanks for checking out the video!
Great video👍 would love to see this logo-history-type video for the other sport leagues!
Definitely! Coming soon! (hopefully!)
The Inter Miami logo is the best of the lot. Exquisite!
I do dig the inter Miami logo! I’m a sucker for art deco styles!
Great to see a new video from you! Just mentioning something I've noticed but you didn't highlight about the Vancouver Whitecaps logo: the bottom triangular shapes are reminiscent somewhat of a V overtop a W, of course for Vancouver Whitecaps. Not sure if that's an official design point or not, but I've always appreciated it.
Oh yeah! Good point! I hadn’t thought about that! Thanks for watching!! 🙌
Found your channel good videos don't give up on the Channel
the lines on Portland are also supposed to evoke the wires of a suspension bridge, or steel bridge trusses as Portland was also called "Bridgeport" or more currently "Bridge City" bc the city is divided by the Willamette and bordered by the Columbia
Ah that makes so much sense… as someone with family in the Portland area I always heard Bridgeport but never knew that that was the origin!
The Roman numerals at the bottom of the Nashville SC USL logo say 2013 not 2018. 2013 was when the club was founded under the name Nashville FC (logo not included) as a fan owned NPSL squad.
Yup good catch that's on me!! Thank you!
Excellent choice about the first DC United logo
Let's go the king returns
haha 🤴
As a Dayton resident, thank you for pronouncing Dayton properly!
Haha I’m just glad I get some of them right! Pay no attention to some of my French pronunciations in this or my other videos! 😅
Nice Background Music, By The Way!
Thanks for watching!
I agree. The old Seattle sounders logo with the killer whale was awesome. Would want a jersey with that.
Same! I want some merch! 😂
I love the fact that Orlando City’s logo kept the lion from their previous logo when they were still a USL team.
Same! I have a soft spot for Orlando from when they were the USL affiliate for SKC and then Dom being a big part of both teams at different points!
@@JustinLearnsThings Orlando forever and ever bro!
Why don't the officaly add Lions to the name?
@@TheMrPeteChannel no idea
Man the Chicago Fire logo rebrand is tough to stomach it went from bad to even worse inside of a year. An audible “woof” can from my mouth when that revamped new logo appeared
I didn't mind the original tbh
Really? I rather like their new logo. It's my favorite of the three, and I think it's leagues better than the second logo. I would have preferred if the light blue cross was closer in shape to the original logo, but I love using the colors and design elements of the city flag, and having a big "C" ties the team in with the Bears and Cubs.
@@irishjet2687 as a fire fan I hate it, circle logos are over used in football. I understood that the club wanted to have a new look moving to soldier field but both of the newer logos are just awful
Naked Raygun!
The current fire logo looks like a hockey design. 2 logos in 2 years and an unnecessary move to soldier field smh
im an american premier league fan but the MLS logos always looked so cool. especially the old NE Revolution logo
Yeah, definitely! Some of the early MLS logos are still some of my favorites!
Great video! Just one thing, though. The rebrand from KC Wiz/Wizards to Sporting Kansas City actually came because the Sporting Club company bought the team, not just a desire to be more Euro-sounding.
Good point! I would assume that the company chose that naming/branding with the name change in mind (and a desire to own several sports teams under the same branding like many of the european sporting clubs!)
That does make sense.
Honestly, the MetroStars comic book logo is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Agreed! That one is pretty fun!
Think the old MetroStars was used probably in honor of the comic book of "Batman" as fictional city was Gotham City to resemble New York City. What you missed that wasn't mentioned in video too is that originally the team was 1st called New York/New Jersey MetroStars to represent the NYC tri-state.
I remember that everyone FOR YEARS demanded that the New England Revolution change their logo (yes even MLS fans) And now that they did change it, everybody suddenly acts like they always loved it.
I would have just cleaned up That logo (mainly just making the stripes solid strokes instead of crayon smerars) and kept it around as an alternate
Yeah it could have definitely made a good alternate logo!
21:43 Keep in mind, R.I.; Connecticut; N.H. & Maine were a part of Massachusetts (i.e.: "New England" ) and Georgia was a territory, not a colony yet.
The reason there's 8 pieces of the snake
Thanks for sharing! 🙌
Chicago, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Go back to the OG logo!
Yeah their OG was pretty great IMO!
Personally as a Timbers fan the 2019 version of our badge is the best 🤙🏻
Noooooo it is 2001-2004
The three stars in the MLS logo, and what they stand for, come from a tifo the Timbers Army (Portland Timbers official fan organization) put together for a US Men's National Team friendly held in Portland.
Oh nice! Timbers have a great fan base, so not surprised!
Love your videos. You put a lot of effort into making them. ✌✌
Thanks for watching! Appreciate it!

One more thing on the MNUFC logo; the loon has 11 feathers. For 11 players on the field.
Ahhh good catch! So many little details!!
As a CF Montreal/Impact fan we should have never changed the logo that we had when we first started in the MLS worst mistake I think ive ever seen in sports when it comes to branding!
idk, i personally love the new logo
Most fans were angry with that decision
@@09halak I know like even the super fans got banned for their actions in response to it.
@@09halak i think it's a good representation of the city. plus, the old logo just seemed kinda flat
@@least.insane.femboy we had a name and our colors. Now we're club de foot and grey. Wow where is our identity. Couldn't we find anything better than club de foot. We don't even call that foot here. It's just copying Europe when we allready had our original name and logo.
The Austin Logo is two oaks that are intertwined. It’s a reference to the treaty oak in Austin.
No it’s a broccoli
My fav badges/crests are the Minnesotta United and the Whitecaps followed by Philladelphia Union one
Yeah I agree, Minnesota and Vancouver are definitely up there for me too!
Look who's back
Haha 😂 thanks for noticing!
Back again
There is a missing San Jose Earthquakes Logo. The one shown is from the 2008 return to the league after the AEG theft/relocation to Houston in 2006
Columbus Crew keeps hitting that downgrade buttom so hard 🤣🤣🤣
😂
My only addendum in terms of the Austin logo is that they did the tree logo more than likely ripping off the "respect your roots" tifo the Save the Crew movement made in 2017.
I would put one note lafc was originally Chivas USA before coming back to and rebuild to now known lafc. Or something like that. Great video
Good point! They did take over the Chivas spot in MLS! I think I touch on it a bit in the names video if I remember correctly
You can have chivas usa as part of MLS’s history, but it’s separate from lafc. Chivas USA and its Mexican counterpart folded the American operations. A brand new ownership group was created from scratch to create LAFC. I had a job interview for an lafc office job in the early beginnings of its operation, and I can tell you first hand that Chivas from usa or Mexico had absolutely no influence or origins or lineage linking to lafc. Completely new entity, built from the ground up, with input from the LA community
@@fcy2kfcy2k60is that why LAFC specifically went to the old Chivas USA supporter clubs and asked them to support LAFC
@@Sinnathan are you talking about the Black Army, an sg that didn’t use chivas color schemes to represent their group? I think the more revealing issue is that there are more anti-galaxy supporters than there are actual galaxy fans. So I’m not surprised that they didn’t jump ship to become gal supporters
Columbus Crew should of keep their logo that they start the franchise with the 3 construction dudes it's a unique logo, i don't know why they change it, notice they can't come up with any other logo better than that one ..
For sure! The first one was my favorite, the second my second favorite, and this one third 😂
Austin FC - The Austin FC logo is not just an oak tree but a specific oak tree, the Treaty Oak. "A Native American legend holds that the Council Oaks, of which the Treaty Oak is the last surviving tree, was a location for the launching of war and peace parties. Legends also hold that women of the Tejas tribe would drink a tea made from honey and the acorns of the oaks to ensure the safety of warriors in battle."
Oh cool! Thanks for the background!
Montreal impacts 2005 logo design looks pretty cool
I love some of those old impact logos! Had tons of character!
@@JustinLearnsThings yeah the logo designers back than seemed pretty legit compared to the boring n formal designs of this era.Which is disappointing because back in the day I used to find the league's outside America whether be it soccer, rugby basketball or cricket quite boring.I found the American designers quite creative n they bought about swagger to their sporting logo designs. They didn't believe in conforming to universal designs n bought originality to their designs.
@@manoamatairavula9989 Yeah I think the changes were because they wanted some timelessness, but if something is around long enough it'll feel timeless anyway!
Nice job on your research for our logo of Charlotte FC!
Thanks for checking it out!
Not only is Charlotte named after Queen Charlotte, but the city is also the seal of Mecklenburg county, also named after Queen Charlotte. Not trying to be biased, but it kind of just made more sense that Charlotte is named the Queen City, the minor league baseball team is even called the Charlotte Knights
It’s surprising how many US cities are nicknamed the Queen City! Especially since we don’t have a queen!
Honestly, really enjoyed all the old badges. It was peak 90s.
Yes agreed! Some are still great! I’ll always love the wiz branding!
@JustinLearnsThings you get an A for effort, but you get a C- for your Sounders section. The A-League logo, with the orca, was only used through 2002. In 2003 the club rebranded back to the NASL logo, and used it until joining MLS
if you count the loons wing in the MNUFC logo there are eleven reference to eleven players on the pitch (Field)
Oh nice! Thanks for the comment! 🙌
This reminded me of why I can't get into the MLS... despite having played soccer and a fan of the Milwaukee Wave (MASL). Not only does every team have the "name" 'City United FC SC', it appears mandatory to have a shield on their logo. As someone who would love to see soccer succeed in North America, I'm not sure this European thing appeals to the average North American sports fan.
Yeah the now very generic names that all mls teams have sucks. I think they could have done something original by using city nicknames as the name of the club ie Queen City FC for Charlotte, Gateway City FC for St Louis etc, as well as the classic NASL names San Jose Earthquakes, newer names with no history Houston Dynamo, and then a couple generic Toronto FC type names would be okay too. But with every single name Insert City Name FC is boring and bland
The league has grown and is very stable and successful. I happily watch FC Cincinnati play to packed house in a gorgeous stadium in our downtown area. I love the sport and supporting my local club, be happy to have folks drop into the Bailey as it is a blast to sing and cheer the boys on.
5:30 - The original MLS United team. - not Atlanta.
There should not be two MLS teams called United.
I think there's more than that, Minnesota United, DC United, Atlanta United... so i think that makes three!
@@JustinLearnsThings Sorry for having to do this: There are* more than that ...

Nice video! Would you consider doing one for the English Premier League?
I’d love to do one for the Premier league! I’d have to think about which teams include with relegation… Maybe every team that’s been in the Premier league? I definitely want to though!
@@JustinLearnsThings You easily could do every team that has been in the Premier League. I believe only 50 teams have had the honor.
5:07 This aspect is an American Sports culture quirk. In a country with multiple relevant sports leagues, many teams in the same city, teams would often put the ball of the sport in their initial logo. In fact the NBA recently every single franchise logo featured a basketball.
i wished i learned these logo histories earlier. thanks. i came back to watch this video. still sad about the chivas incident..... trolege easter egg. and oh god new england.. what have you done

MLS: Soccer balls in the logo are a little on the nose. Lets remove them.
NBA: ...
Hahaha too true! I hadn't even considered that! Because I'm totally fine with the basketballs in the logos, but clearly disliked the overuse of soccer balls. I'm not even sure I can articulate it beyond just being used to NBA logos as they are! 🤷♂️
@@JustinLearnsThings Yeah frankly I've got no problem with the NBA logos either. Maybe it's just a culture and tradition thing.

Imo the mls has by far the best logo designs
Yeah I dig a lot of the MLS Logos
W youtuber
Houstons original team name was the “1836” it was changed to dynamo before their first game tho. I vaguely remember the logo I think was a silhouette of Sam Houston on a horse.
With Nashville, MMXIII is 2018, not 2018.
Ramenez l'impact le plus vite possible!!!!!!
32:16 The logo you show for Minnesota isn’t correct. In 2013 the logo had “Minnesota United FC” on it. It wasn’t until they moved to MLS that it was changed to MNUFC.
Interesting I'll have to go back and look at it! Thanks for watching!
On the Nashville logo: MMXIII is actually 2013 (Not 2018.) Either someone screwed up big time, or the number means something else.
2013 was when the the fan team was made

Aaaand the NBA logo video is out! 🙌
Great presentation. Just some corrections. Real Salt Lake you have the dates incorrect. There's a gap between 2009 and present. Nashville FC the Roman Numerals are 2013, not 2018.
Finally, you forgot to mention the Sounders were part of the NASL starting in 1974.
Looking forward to the updated Montreal logo. Best!
Portland Timbers early 2010s logo was the best
I’m very fond of that Timbers logo as well!
just a lil correction - MMXIII (in former nashville badge) is 2013, not 2018 as you said :)
Thanks yeah it’s definitely on the list of things that just pokes at me lol
I thought the lighter blue in the Union logo was also the same shade of blue in the city flag for Philadelphia.
It definitely looks similar… I wouldn’t be surprised if that’s where the sons of Ben got their colors from too. It definitely all makes sense!
Your french was good

Love that OG logo!
Austin's logo actually has 2 trees!
Why are they called the FC and not the Cincinnati Royal Lions
The A on the Atlanta United is also supposed to be a rail road spike
I love some temas us SC rather opted to FC.
Are we gonna ignore the fact the original San Jose team is now the Houston Dynamo and the current San Jose team is an entirely different team? Almost happened with Columbus being moved to Austin. Thankfully that didn't happen.
Edit: Just reached the Houston Dynamo part of the video.
Haha left you hanging, but glad it circled back around! Thanks for watching!

How every college football team got their nickname
I've thought about doing college teams... there's so many! 😅 I feel like that would be a several hour video!
@@JustinLearnsThings do one major conference at a time, that'll make nice digestible videos
The Colorado logo update is good. The rest range from neutral to horrible.
There's a few I enjoy that are pretty unique... I think that the Colorado one is good, the MNUFC is pretty interesting, but lots that feel like may not still be around a decade form now. Oh and I dig all three PNW teams, though the timbers and sounders essentially had those before they joined.
tbh I wish DC kept their old design, like it didnt look like a traditional club logo but it was icnoic and different.
Yeah it definitely had a classic US soccer vibe to it!
I still use the red shield logo as my thumbnail. The new one is ok but, the second logo is the best.
21:19 - The flag of the city of Philadelphia is colored blue and gold.
The white part is where you insert the word FOOTBALL at an angle on the MLS football badge.
😂 Thanks for watching!
The MLS newest logo is excellent.
Are you thinking the new seattle one or the st louis fc logo? Both are pretty good in my book! Just made a follow up not too long ago on the seattle logo!
The blue and gold of the Union, could also represent the Philadelphia colors, of blue and gold.
Oh you know what I bet they do too! I hadn’t thought of that! Good catch!
I know it's tradition etc, but I don't like teams just being called FC and then the city name, I prefer some effort and actually coming up with name.
Yeah I get what you mean. Off the top of my head, the only league in Europe that has the norm of having a name other than the city are the Czech Leagues. Viktoria, Sparta, Slavia, Bohemians, Sigma, Zbrojovka, etc.
Shouldn't Nashville SC roman numerals be MMXVIII for 2018 and not MMXIII = 2013 ?
Yeah good catch! I have since realized there's even more to the story! Before the Nashville SC USL team, there was an NPSL team called Nashville FC, started in 2013. Much of the logo design for the USL log comes from that teams logo and that team started in 2013, so they're actually harkening back to that old NPSL team.
Too bad I can't edit that into the video! Because it does make so much more sense!
Old impact logo for the win
For real! Impact had some pretty cool old logos!
A few of the original logos are better than the new ones, New England, Houston, Chicago, Columbus, LA Galaxy
Agreed! Some of the classics look great!
Great video, but, damn...every time I hear THE MLS it feels like nails on a chalkboard. It's just MLS. Other than that, thank you for this video
