Curtly Ambrose Bowls 9 No-Balls in an Over, 15 in Two | Story Of The Longest Over In Cricket History

  • Curtly Ambrose, one of cricket's legends, bowled the longest over in cricket history. But behind the humour lies a heartrending tragic story - where facing a battle of pride against Australia, he stood upto injuries, blame, and even humiliation to win a test for his team. A test series that went on to symbolize the fall of West Indies cricket dominance.
The Frank Worrell Cup, a prestigious bilateral competition between West indies and Australia, held immense significance as the stage for cricket's crown especially test cricket. And Curtly Ambrose became a crucial figure in it starting from 1988, making his mark with remarkable performances, especially against Australia.
Especially of note was his heroics in Perth in the 1992 edition where he had taken 7 wickets in 38 balls for only one run, completing a comeback for his country
However, things took a turn in 1995 when Australia defeated West Indies, marking the end of their era. Ambrose facing immense criticism for not performing up to expectations, bearing the full burden of the blame
This was further complicated when next they again lost to Australia in the 1996 world cup semifinal from a really comfortable position
So come 1996, West Indian team was extremely motivated to get there revenge but quickly faced setbacks, losing the first two tests.
Thankfully the ODIs that followed, allowed Ambrose to work hard to regain his form and make a powerful comeback in the third test, taking nine wickets.
However then tragedy stuck as Ambrose was injured during tri series ODI finals putting him out of the fourth test. His absence severely impacted West Indies, leading to a humiliating defeat.
With one test left and Ambrose recovering bit, he was now determined to win. If not for glory then for pride.
And followed it up by taking five wickets in the first innings, bringing West Indies to the brink of victory. The match became heated, with tensions rising between the teams.
And as intense final test started, watched his friend and the captain of the team Courtney Walsh risking his health by bowling even while being sick.
He became desperate to finish the match
Ignoring the fact that he was also suffering from a leg injury
An injury that would subconsciously change his gait
Leading to him struggling with no-ball calls, bowling an 15 ball over
In the end, West Indies won the match but lost the series. Ambrose's perseverance and dedication, taking 16 wickets in the last two matches, stood as a testament to his commitment, even in the face of adversity.
This memorable moment, often remembered for its humor, revealed the man behind the cricket legend-a determined legend who gave his all for his team's pride

Australia is truly a fortress. It takes a lot more than just skills to win there. It takes sheer grit, passion and will to play till the very last breath. Be it India in BGT or England in Ashes or West Indies or any other test playing nation, they all have suffered but show true character in Australia.

The Australian team became pretty strong during the late 90s under Steve Waugh's captaincy and in the case of WI they had been beating the Australian team for the last 16 years even in Australian conditions, So 1995 when Australia had pretty talented and skillful youngster players and a captain with the experience of Steve Waugh they managed to end WI's winning streak and later outclass WI for good

It’s a utter shame that we lost West Indies in modern world. Being a 90s kid I faintly remember their dying cricket and during 2011 World Cup it was completely destroyed, with glimpses of what they were in t20 wc. Along with aus Ind nz sa Eng it would have been so thrilling to see wi with their tall fast bowlers running and bowling at 150 kmph and their batsmen hitting same pace delivery out of the park.

I'm pretty sure that the women's team (ranked 20 in the world) is improving very quickly and will be challengers in the next 5 years, just like the Thailand women team's journey. It's cool that your domestic competitions are also improving now. Indonesia definitely has amazing potential in cricket.

It was pressure, Australia had planned very well for the finals and had the perfect strategy and gameplan to win in both scenarios, Ganguly miscalculated and failed to somewhere utilize the toss to favour India, And even Australia caught our team offguard by attacking from the very first ball and went beserk posting 359/3 which at that time was no less than 400 and the highest total posted in a WC final. And in case of India no one except Sehwag fought hard and became sitting ducks for McGrath and Brett Lee and the Aussies sucessfully choked us and won the World Cup, They used a similiar gameplan to win the 2023 World Cup.
