  • "Blue" is the fourth studio album by ‪@JoniMitchell‬, released on June 22, 1971, by Reprise Records and featuring James Taylor on guitar. The album was written and produced by Joni and was recorded in 1971 at A&M Studios in LA.
In 2019, Brandi Carlile asked James to re-create his guitar part for Joni’s song “All I Want” from “Blue” in advance of Carlile’s Walt Disney Hall (LA) performance of the full album. Carlile reprised the concert at Carnegie Hall in 2021 which also celebrated the album’s 50th Anniversary.

Sigh, not only do the years melt away but this is a shining spot of gratitude for still being here today in 2022 (was there in 1971, avidly, and learned dulcimer and guitar and alternative tunings from being a mesmerized 15 year old who was galvanized by the harmonies) - James, I cannot thank you enough for sharing how you play this. I could not have dreamed it would be possible in the future to experience this first hand.

@@laverite1050 It's true, but this boomer only got around to it at age 64. Yikes! I'll be dead before I'm good, for sure. But my now 8 guitars will be left to my high school blocks away, so - maybe something in the translation there.

Dear James, I hope you know how much so many of us who never met you really love your unique and all-careful way with music. It shines in everything you do and in everything you say. Your heart is laid bare in every voicing, picking, melody, etc. and you should be endlessly showered with affection for just being that precious. Thank you for making this world so much more generous.

I wonder how much work it took for James and Joni to come up with this accompaniment…did it just spring forth from his guitar, inspired by Joni’s singing and dulcimer? Did they argue over it? Were there a bunch of versions that were tried and discarded?
Then, 50 years later, did he just pick up the guitar and play it, or did he have to work to re-construct it; listening to the recording and playing…?
