    I've always thought it would make more sense for the scout tier marines to also be the drivers/pilots. Most of the reaction time/reflexes, since that's the most common reason I've seen stated for marine pilots, without having to sacrifice a full power armored battle brother.

    • @BigMikeMcBastard
      @BigMikeMcBastard Před rokem +17

      It's almost certainly never worth it. The benefit you get from faster reflexes etc. as a marine versus the chapter having serfs pilot their vehicles won't be more significant than the benefit you get from having an extra scout marine on the field. A scout marine would no doubt be better, but not THAT much better.

    It’s explained in a few books as to why they are used to pilot vehicles, it’s largely because of reaction time and durability. They can survive otherwise mortal wounds, thus potential saving the crew.

    1:25 Terminal velocity isn't a constant; it has to take into account an objects mass, surface area, drag coefficient, the density of the medium through which it passes and the strength of the gravitational field. 120mph is about right for a skydiver, not for several tons of metal.

As to why astartes fly them...maybe to fly as fast and low as possible? Good reflexes help not getting hit by flak. It also doesn't hurt that they probably have a higher G-force ceiling. I think most (almost all) vehicles look ridiculous in 40K. It's one of the reasons I never got into playing or collecting complete armies, just grabbing the odd mini for painting an collecting. I think what could make the speeders look a little better would be to replace at least one Space Marine with a 28mm vehicle driver model from something like Bolt Action. They could be the pilot and then the Space Marine adds the firepower. It'd have the added advantage of selling the Space Marine as a 10 foot tall super soldier.

    • @lazerhosen
      @lazerhosen Před rokem +5

      Most of the vehicles in 40k look ridiculous next to miniatures for the same reason Star Wars action figure vehicles look ridiculous next to your figures: the scale is squished, and not consistently across the model. Think about how a Leman Russ battle tank is depicted in artwork vs how it looks on the table.
      The other problem most vehicles face is that everything else in the army is mounted on a base, and many vehicles are not, so there is a visual consistency missing there as well.

You have a very tough pilot, who has super senses, is battle hardened to not panic or miss shots under fire, who then if the vehicle is downed is a useful soldier.

That being said, even in Soul Hunter, Septimus, the human pilot, is often described as slow and unable to pilot the thunderhawk as well as a space marine. It's the same argument for every Astartes unit, while you could have humans for any of the roles (pilot, tech marines, apothecaries, etc), they wouldn't be quite as capable.

Like you know that in the basic kit you just get the space marine action figure but you have to buy his land speeder separately. :Dd Plus of course lorewise it would make sense for them to wear their armour while driving that as the thing has barely any hull coverage, also remember that Tony Stark does not have to drive a land speeder because his suit can fly.

    I started reading Horus Heresy books recently and it is stated that a lot of vehicules like Stormbirds and Thunderhawks were piloted by servitors. On the other hand as far as I know the marines piloting aircraft or driving tanks do not count to the Codex 10x100 marines requiement so maybe this is a way to bypass the restriction.

    just for fun, the primaris land speeder became a meme in italy, beacouse the marines seems a quite famous comedian trio called aldo giovanni and giacomo when they did a theatre show and in this show there was the subau baracca sketch.
    and it was perfect.

      The Storm was mentioned, but there's two missed; the Tempest, The DA Vengence. The Stormwolf, Stormtalon and Stormraven also suffer from the 'Flying Brick' look, and either look like a shrunk Thunderhawk, or a kid playing with Lego....

    Well, the Land speeder dpes make some sense lore-wise at least
    While fighting on the ground, it is sometimes necessary to have heavy weapons at a shortest time possible from a flank or rear position to where your main offence/defence takes place, for example behind an enemy tank assault, tearing it apart from behind and getting away just as fast.
    The pilot has to be a space marine for a number of reasons. One-they can be easily replaced in combat in case the pilot is wounded (as space marines cannot have their own offensive human troops, only navy and PDF). Two-you can sacrifice pilot protection for a degree of structural integrity of the vehicle itself without increasing the vehicle's mass, as the power armor gives a decent protection from small arms and light artillery. Third-reaction and targeting. Space marines have targeting matrixes integrated into their helmets, which makes them able to both pilot at great speeds without much risk and target incredibly quickly.
    All in all-its a useful design, that grants them an incredibly mobile weapons platform and fire support
    Also-love the design, fits the overall aesthetic)

    To be fair, we have fully armored soldiers driving vehicles in real life. It’s extra protection of a vital role and means you can leap into action of the vehicle gets toasted.
    Source: years of service in Army infantry
    Also I did the same thing with the Tau when everyone said they didn’t fit 40K. I made them grimdark to prove the haters wrong with a Bioshock paint scheme. 🤘

    Love the old model, clunky but effective... On a strategy point of view, having a way to carry heavy weaponry across physical obstacles is a must. offering heavy supresing fire to cover your asault marines werever they go is almost essential....
    Most moder army use fast travel light armored vehicle, they tend to yeild lots of firepower to cover infantry an disable small fortifications. a good example is the german wiesel...
    In the wole lore of 40k , in witch many thing have gone wrong in the last decade, land speeders are one of the most tacticaly and lorewise realist concept. The model is so iconic of old space marine logic : ugly but fonctionnal. Even the armor is logic, lorewise, if you shot one down, you could got up to 4 angry overpowered warriors to deal with , it might even be behind your line...

  • @dakotaheninger7643
    @dakotaheninger7643 Před rokem

    I think land speeders make sense if you think of them in terms of vehicles used by special forces today. High speed, lightly armored vehicles that can still carry an impressive array of weapon systems. The design of the land speeder makes sense, as you said space marines are already heavily armored, so the vehicle doesn't need to be. Two Marines could quickly reach a forward observation point to scout for enemy troop movements or intercept enemy recon teams. In these examples the Land Speeder is absolutely the tool for the job for the mobility it offers the Space Marines the ability to have a large battlespace presence while being a numerically inferior force.
