Well that's the obvious one, and not what BW was alluding to. The problem is he holds back so much of his strength, all the time, because he feels like he lives in a world of cardboard, where everything is so fragile. After decades of holding back his strength, it's harder for him to tap into the full extent of that strength because his mind stops him. His mind thinks he has to keep holding back because he might destroy/kill someone, and he doesn't want that, even if they're his enemy.
Now THIS is a Superman. He humbles himself to the point of allowing himself to be cuffed and he shows his respect for others by addressing them as "Dr." and "General", never putting himself above others. I've waited so long to see a Superman like that on the big screen and I have Zack Snyder and Henry Cavill to thank for this...

When Superman started walking toward them at 2:04, everyone backed off except the general. After having seen Zack Snyder’s justice league, it now finally makes sense why the general wouldn’t be intimidated by Superman.

I don't understand how people can say Zack didn't understand Superman. This entire scene is everything Superman is about l. He willfully gives himself up to the authorities and is absolutely respectful and courteous about it. But he makes it clear that he's only doing it to save Earth and does not feel any obligation to be controlled by them. He works with them to stop Zod and even saves the soldiers who were just shooting at him in the Smallville battle. He charms Lois and earnestly thanks her for believing in him.
How is that not the essence of Superman? How was this movie and Cavill's tenure as Superman able to be withered away so swiftly?

@@foxydev4056 he's letting the humans see that he isn't a threat. He lets them have the power, letting them cuff him to show that he is willing to co-operate with them. It's like, I don't know, crouching down to be on eye-level or slightly below with a child/person in a bed to give them a sense of equality or control (not a perfect analogy, but the only one I can come up with right now).
@RottenEgg he breaks them to show that he isn't just going to meekly obey their orders. He's happy to work with them, but he won't let them control him. If he goes with Zod, it's because HE chooses to, not because he's forced to.
He literally breaks them and moves closer to the glass to scare them. He may be humble but this Superman apparently isn’t above spooking people he admits to being allied with just to make a point.

Hands down! Zach Snyder's "Man of Steel" is the best Superman movie I have seen in my life thus far! This movie is absolutely phenomenal in my opinion! I find the story, scientific concepts, philosophical ideas, acting, directing, music, cinematography and visual effects to be just powerful! It is definitely one of my favorite movies. I would even say it is one of the top ten films so far from the 2010s decade, along with "Cloud Atlas", "Les Miserables", "Coriolanus", "The Great Gatsby", "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and "12 Years A Slave".

The he broke the handcuffs really showed his strength because it was clear he didn't have to try to break. He just stood up and they snapped like balsa wood. He had to put more effort into not breaking them.

No matter what people say, Henry Cavill was and forever will be a great Superman and Man of Steel is a great superhero film.
This movie actually captured what would it feel like to have a superpowered human-like alien among us. We would not worship him, we'd be afraid for our lives with him.
This movie in the retrospect has gained so much respect for being such a great movie.

Here I am, re-watching this scene after re-watching ZSJL. What a character development Clark Kent had, from an optimistic Kal-El in MoS to a deceased and hopeless Clark Kent in BvS, and a grown and mature Superman in JL. Please give Snyder justice this time, give him the authority to restore Snyder verse, this is fans really want so bad, not Joss' Tees Leak given to us 4 years ago.

I really love the scene when Superman approaches the mirror, everyone in the room steps back except Swanwick - he could have been the DCEU's Martian Manhunter. And the mirror shot @ 2:23, Superman doesn't know who Swanwick really is, but they are very similar - they 'do what they have to do' to protect the people they care about. This could have been a great Superman/DC arc. I miss Zack Snyder in the DCEU - if the studio just trusted him, we'd have gotten JL2 or Man of Steel 2 by now.

When the original Robin, Dick Grayson, stopped being Robin, he was kind of at a loss as to what to do with himself. He no longer had the secure placement and identity as Batman's sidekick. He didn't know what to do next. So, he talked to Superman about it, and Kal told him the story of a guy called Nightwing. He was a heroic figure in Kryptonian legend, who forged his own path to help people. It inspired Grayson to take up the name Nightwing and carry on.
Superman can help people by listening and talking to them. He's humble and thoughtful, and understands that people need guidance and as long as they accept it, he'll try to give it. This scene and many others in Man of Steel demonstrate that beautifully. He's good and he sees the good in others. Perhaps he's naive to a fault but he always tries his best. It's inspiring.
You can't talk about perfect camera angle without Zack Snyder.
