    The ball interrupts the flow of fuel from the tank out the filler when the car is upside down. It's inline so a hose can't get around it very well unless the hose or line is stiff and small diameter- like nylon tubing for swamp coolers.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  Před 13 lety +2

    @coyote7272 The ball is the barier. The metal flap isn't anti-theft, it just prevents unwanted tank/environment exchange. Not pulling the line out easily is just a coincidental hassle to siphoning.

  • @littlegoobie
    @littlegoobie Před 12 lety +8

    actually, that ball's main purpose is to stop gas from dumping out if you roll the car, that's why it's a hollow floaty ball. It's a one way check valve. Stopping syphon tubes would be easier and cheaper to stop with a metal screen.

  • @rapskallion
    @rapskallion Před 8 lety +55

    Take out the ball to siphon the tank? If you're at the point where you can get to the ball, the tank is open and ready to be siphoned.

    @spelunkerd That same Cherokee I rolled I winched back over and drove 30 miles home with no windshield. The thing to do is give it at least as much time upright as it had upside down- check the oil level and unplug the ignition coil. If it doesn't rotate but makes a nasty starter grind noise you'll have to pull the plugs. If it rotates smoothly you can run it.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  Před 13 lety

    @squidgysailor It's designed to prevent spill out if the car rolls over and prevent syphoning. As far as I know the gas station cut out is all in the pump end.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  Před 13 lety

    @watcbd It does help trigger the fuel gun to shut off before splashing out too.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  Před 12 lety

    This is true, another common cause it the curve of the filler neck hose can cause back splash too.

    That may explain why some gas nozzles don't work well when filling up my Hyundai Santa Fe unless I hold it at a a strange angle. I guess the gas splashes on the ball and trips the automatic cut off before the tank is full.

    • @imdeplorable2241
      @imdeplorable2241 Před 3 lety +1

      I saw that ball and went, "BINGO!"That's why gas bubbles out when I'm pouring it in from a gas can. It's restricting the flow and gas is filling the neck.

    I know most 1990's and newer have it. I do think it's mandated. The purpose is to prevent spilling in the even of a roll over accident.

  • @briansmobile1
    @briansmobile1  Před 13 lety +6

    @deanbhill If the car is upside down the ball will float in the gas toward the three fingers and gas will free flow in the same way it lets gas by when filling the tank. The gas cap actually does the job when a car is upside down. I've rolled a couple one was upside down for half hour in the mountains (Jeep Cherokee) and the particular car had no ball in it and it still held it's fuel. Oil.. not so much it went all over in the air filter from the PCV hose.

    Putting a hose into the tank and hitting the green ball (floater), can you damage the floater ball where you can not tell how much fuel you still have in your tank? I have two vehicles that I'm unable to tell how gas I still have in them. Bad people in the neighborhood cutting cable line, taking things from some vehicles, and doing other things in the neighborhood.

    What I alwasy wanted to do is to install something where I could get gas out of my vehicle anytime I needed it wheter to help someone on the road or to fill my lawnmower etc....seems like where the ruel filter is one could install a tee and have a petcock on a tee line? What would be really nice is if there was also a momentary switch that bumped the fuel pump? Anyone here ever do that? Do tow trucks have such a feature? Motorhomes must have some was to get gas to run auxiliary genny?

      I had something like this on my old F150 that I did mobile repair with. I pipe threaded a fitting/nipple down low on the side of the tank so I couldn't empty the tank and strand myself and also so I didn't suck up tank sediments.

      Even better idea, pull the fuel pump fuse and relay, stick a metal wire or paper clip into the 2 terminals of the relay housing that actuates the switch, that way when you turn the key instead of 3 seconds of fuel being pumped, it's always going to be on, before you turn the key, pop the hood, find the fuel rail valve and unscrew the valve stem or whatever its called with the little tool that comes with tire repair kits for bicycles, once the little stem is removed with that tool, connect a hose to that valve on the fuel rail and hose in a gas can, turn the key and you have gas pumping into a can now, voila! Way late reply but maybe someone finds this helpful

    • @mr.tactown.253

    • @Kwikasfuk636
      @Kwikasfuk636 Před 5 lety +9

      Not true. If the car flips over there won't be enough fuel beneth the ball in the neck to enable it to float and seal. If the ball is inside the tank and not the neck, once flipped over the ball would want to float away from the seal. The fuel cap is the defence against fuel loss during rollover

      Drill a hole in his gas tank and collect the fuel from underneath. To prevent it from catching on fire you need to buy a CO2 canister (a big one) and blow CO2 on the drill while drilling. Be aware that CO2 will prevent a fire by starving the area of oxygen, but it can also starve you of oxygen, so act quickly.

Screenshots my evidence for the judge. See - they filled it & killed it. Spews gas AT me, so trick = a lawnmower 2 gallon hand held red gas can + a proper funel & ease the gas in. Broke the gas gauge too somehow. Put 4 gallons in over 2 days, still on E. I wish Judge Judy could help me with this nonsense, but the local small claims will do.
