Drain Gas Using Fuel Pump WITHOUT Running The Engine! (Nissan 240SX)

  • How to jump the fuel pump relay to drain the gas from your tank without turning the engine over. Demonstrated on a Nissan 240SX, this technique will work on any car and involves jumping a fuel pump relay to make the pump run any time the key is in the "on" position. Reroute your fuel line into a container and you can drain your entire fuel tank in just a few minutes using this method.
    This technique should work very similarly for any 80's or 90's Japanese car, including Hondas, Toyotas, Mitusbishis, Subarus, and of course, other Nissans! The only caveat is that you'll need to know which relay(s) to jump for your specific vehicle.

    Thanks for your video. Drained gas from my '95 mercury villager. I connected the drain hose to the engine side of the gas filter. Then placed the jumper wire on those 2 closest to each other terminals, Turned the ignition key to the ON position and presto.....took about 10 minutes for 10 gallons to pump out. Very easy.

  • @CarsSimplified
    @CarsSimplified Před 3 lety +2

    Smart solution! That thick wire is especially important due to how many amps the pump will draw. Great simple yet thorough demonstration!
    To anyone attempting to do this, make sure you don't leave the pump unattended, even if you know the amount of fuel is less than the can will hold. The pump is lubricated and cooled by fuel, so if you pump all the fuel out and dry run the pump for a while, you can burn it out. Plus fumes, of course. Be safe!

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  Před 3 lety

      Thank you, and good tip about the pump being liquid cooled (by the gas)...open container of fuel can be very risky so it’s really important to never leave them unattended 💯

      Oh yeah, the S14 wiring is pretty similar IIRC. Look for an EGI Pump relay in the fuse box-you can jump and test it without pulling fuel lines. If it stays on more than the usual ~3 seconds you’re golden

  • @mr_mnky
    @mr_mnky Před rokem

    good vid. What does it sound like when the fuel pump runs dry? Also, Is there any risk of damaging it if it runs dry in the time it takes to realize the tank is dry & I go turn the key off?

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  Před rokem +1

      Excellent questions! The pitch of the pump goes up as it starts to run dry and cavitate. The pump RPM may increase a little, too. Kind of sounds like an aquarium pump running dry.
      Assuming it only takes you 5-15 seconds to turn of the key it shouldn’t hurt the pump any. They are designed to use the liquid fuel as coolant so they’ll overheat after a few minutes I’d guess, but a few seconds won’t hurt anything.

    It looks like you are tapping off the high pressure side feed? Is it possible to take it off the low pressure return side that is after the regulator instead so we don't have to deal with the typical banjo nut on the high pressure side?

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  Před 11 měsíci

      I would think so, yeah. The low pressure flows unused fuel back to the tank, and all we need for this is flow, doesn’t have to be high pressure 👍🏻
      My setup has a fuel pressure regulator/filter combo mounted near the diff, so the return line is way harder to reach than the pressurized line that goes into the bay.

    Thanks brother I need to do this on my s13. The fule in it is abt 6 years old. When I tried to turn it on I donhear the fule pump...so that's a good sign.
    Quick question tho...I have ant quarter tank of old gas...will this method burn out or overload the fule pump???

    • @KameTrick
      @KameTrick  Před 2 lety +1

      It shouldn’t, no. The fuel pump in S13’s (and all cars AFAIK) runs the entire time the key is on, and pushes fuel through a pressure regulator that’s fed to the engine, the excess diverts back into the tank…so the pump runs constantly anyway, pumping out 1/4 tank of old gas shouldn’t really be any different.
      If it’s an old pump that was going to fail, it will fail but better in the garage than out on the road, right? Though once it’s pretty much empty and bubbling (sound will be different) I wouldn’t keep running it to try to get “the last drops” out-the fuel is what cools the pump so it will burn out if it’s pumping mostly air.

    Thanks for showing this. I've got a notice from my City's Code Enforcement that I've got to move an older vehicle that was my work truck. I broke my ankle some time back (during mid-Covid), and it is still slow to be healing. And, fucking sadly, surgery is not an option, because it has to heal normally. I think they said it is the navicular bone, and surgeries are hard to get right and it'll always give problems if it doesn't heal correctly. So, I'm trying to manually heal it without surgery. Thus, my work truck has sat there a little longer than it should. So, I've got to get the gas out, put new in, get it inspected, and get a Texas state sticker. Then, the CE of my small little town will quit fucking with me, I hope, so thank you. I don't understand why it's such a big problem, but I've got neighbors that call if your grass gets over 7 inches tall, if your trash is missed by one day, if you park one tire in the grass, etc. So, I hope that this will get my Nissan Armada running again; or, at least, get new gas and not have the city of my ass. Thanks.

      I’ve only tried jumping the ones I needed to for fuel per the video. I will say the S13 has a relay to detect whether or not the clutch pedal is pushed in that lives in the engine bay near one of the fenders, I think US Drivers side but it’s been a while since I’ve checked. Car won’t turn over if the season doesn’t read that the clutch pedal is depressed. Jumping that relay will allow you to start it in gear, just don’t run over your foot or forget to put it in neutral and drive it into the side of your house on startup lol

      I respectfully disagree: my setup, and most S-chassis setups, will have an in-tank fuel pump and *all* setups will have a fuel line that connects to the engine somewhere. You remove the line from the engine and point it into a catch can, adding an extension to the line if needed for room.
      If you don’t feel comfortable following along with a video that’s the same in chassis and concept but not the *exact* same as your setup, you probably shouldn’t be messing around with shooting gasoline into a bucket with electric systems by yourself. Get a friend who’s more comfortable and experienced with this sort of thing to help you so you can build the confidence to be able to do it by yourself next time 💪
      And that’s not to be discouraging it’s to keep you safe while you learn. Plenty of people learned that way who aren’t professional mechanics. Best of luck, you can do it 🫡
