Thanks for taking the time! I just want to touch on a couple things here that may help with the process.
I start with my Stanley tape measure to get our dimensions of the Window Sill and Apron.
Opening (from drywall to drywall) + 3” = WINDOW SILL
Window Sill - 1” = APRON
frame of window to finished edge of drywall + 1 1/2” = WINDOW SILL DEPTH
Next, using my Dewalt 12” Miter Saw I cut the length of my 1x8 material for the window sill. Then cut the length of my apron using a 15 degree cut on the ends. Like I said this is the specifications that DR HORTON requires us to do.
Then using the Dewalt 10” table saw I rip my piece to 6 3/4” or overall depth for this particular window. Real easy for me to set the “fence” of the table saw into position and just lock it in. Make sure when you are using a table saw you always maintain pressure on the material pushing it down and to the “fence”. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS hold pressure to the piece between the blade and the “fence”, if not the material may bind and shoot back at you!!!! Your window WILL most likely be different dimensions so please use my easy math to get yours RIGHT.
Next, Routing our material. Don’t be afraid of this step! Yes it requires the tool, which in my case is the Dewalt 20v Router. Just follow the instructions to set the router bit in the tool correctly and set the depth. Maybe try on a scrap piece a couple times to get your profile right. Listen and watch this part of the video if you need good explanation of how to hold and what to focus on while using the tool.
On to scribing the Window Sill. I use a speed square to help with verifying my pencil lines and determining if the drywall is square to the window. Remember 3” larger so split the difference 1 1/2” each side for the “ears”. Once you get the window sill centered continue to hold pressure so it doesn’t move while you figure out the angles. Draw your lines and cut out the back corner pieces, I use a Dewalt 20V Jigsaw to make it easy.
Installing the Window Sill does require some focus, but we can DO IT! DO IT NOW! Start with getting your reveal in one corner of the sill and then level that side. Move across the sill to match your reveal against the window until you get to the other side. Level that side as well with a handy Stabila speed level. Then with a larger level place on the front of the sill and verify the front is level and straight. I use a screwdriver to pry and hold my material when shooting any nails so my material doesn’t move when firing the Metabo 2 1/2” 16 ga. nail gun. The apron is very easy in our case here, just center it under the window sill and nail it snug up to the bottom. After caulking and paint your new Window Sill will be ready to go!
Thank you so much for watching

Hunter, I have to compliment you on your ability to articulate building concepts in a way that is relatable and easy to follow. Very thorough. You obviously know your craft. Much appreciated !!
Can't imagine that lack of shims is gonna hold up once some flower pots are sitting on there. No one is standing on it, but lots of us put fairly heavy things on window sills. This is the kind of work that makes people hate track homes.
Good tips on lining it up and measuring it.
Although I would use shims, the apron likely provides sufficient support much like a riser supports a stair tread.
Agreed. I can't blame this guy for following the guidelines of his employer, but for him to casually justify his method by saying "Nobody is standing on these things" is lame and misleading. Everybody puts stuff on windowsills -- that's what they're for. The apron will probably keep the front edge up, but the back edge (against the window frame) will slip down on the brads once the caulk line gives way, and that won't take long after somebody moves in. Liners and casings don't need much fastening strength; sills do.
Great tutorial for someone who has no idea what she’s doing. Need to do sills and I will be following this with confidence.
Dr Horton did not show that much love and affection when they built my home. My window sills are basic ASF, along with several other things in the house. Nothing is symmetrical in my home.
Love your work.
Love this guy! He is a natural teacher.
Hands down the absolute best "how to" video I've ever watched! Keep up the good work my guy. 👏🏾👌🏾🙏🏾
Dude, great tutorial! Perfectly presented. Even after 35 years of experience in home renovations, one can learn something from another fellow tradie. Well done man!
Really appreciate your time watching and leaving a quick comment! 35 years that’s awesome! Glad I could show you a couple of my tricks, any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day! 😎
@@huntercarlson5446 Yes, indeed! I am almost 60 in a few months. That only confirms that you still can teach an old dog new tricks. Quite a few hints in your video which I highly appreciate. Thanks for sharing and all the best, mate!

Wow, great tutorial. Works like a charm every time. I did 9 windows in my new home that the builder did not put in window sills. Every on perfect. Thanks!!
I was going to have window sills done by someone that knows what they are doing, but instead I am going to make my own. Great excuse to buy new tools! Thanks man!
Very nice. My new home only has drywall. Simple way to dress it up. To HD tomorrow.
I like that you think about the painter and do a little sanding 🤙🏾
I appreciate that comment! Bryan and I do our best to make sure we leave a good product for the painters and then the homeowners! Thank you for watching! Have a blessed day 😎

big confidence builder, thanks for taking the time.
Nicely done. Love how you simply snap lines against the existing structure vs lots of error-prone measuring.

Best vid for making my own sills
Great tutorial ❤
Thank you! My home came with (zero) windowsills in any of the windows. It was built in 1980, so maybe it was a budget skip for the previous owner (I have found ALOT of these) or it might have been out of style at the time? Either way, I want to add them so this tutorial is excellent and makes total sense!
You are the professional brother, I just want to learn to install my new windows by myself, thanks 🙏
Good tutorial 👍🏻

Thanks for the tutorial. Builder did not put sills on any windows, and I am interested in adding some. You make it look so easy, but you are a skilled builder. I don't have the power tools to accomplish this task so I may have to hire someone to do this for my home.

Most the time you can use your chopsaw if you’ve got a 12 inch to cut your ears out and then use your jigsaw for cutting inward. It works better and you get a cleaner cut.
Good job!

Do not use mdf. Use clear pine or pfj. Mdf is cardboard.... when building for yourselfe use wood.
I can totally agree with you! All my material packs for these “track” homebuilders are always MDF for window sills. With a good finish of paint they seem to hold up “decently” for a few years, but yes if you can afford just a little more going wood is much better! Thanks for commenting! Have a blessed day 😎
Good video. I'm going to do mine this way.

This video helped me so much
Thank you!!
I'd like to see that drywall return and that MDF sill after about 10 years of weather changes, condensation etc.
I understand! I don’t get to choose the material I install for every house…the builder makes that decision…thanks for watching and have a blessed day 😎
Great vid! I'm in Castle Pines and need to do some window replacement. I can save a TON on the install if I do my own trim removal and install, and your vid has given me the confidence to DIY it from scratch if (when) I damage any pieces when removing.
I’m glad you found my video and I gave you some confidence to do it yourself! Castle Pines, I’m about 20 min away from you! Love the area you are in! Don’t hesitate with any questions you may have! I’d also be up to come meet you if it would help! Thanks for reaching out and leaving a comment! Have a blessed day 😎
Good job Hunter 👌🏼👍🏻
I also do trim work, I do it in Portland Oregon. You are doing great, I like your approach to work. I usually put window sill along the bottom edge of the window. That is, with a window frame thickness of 1 1/2 ", we get a reveal of about 3/4", depending on the thickness of the window sill material.
Thanks!
Really appreciate you leaving some feedback! Some of the windows in the homes I’m in vary on the frame thicknesses. Also the framing isn’t perfect so we have decided as a trim company to just give a standard reveal in every single window. Thus leading to a smaller reveal than 3/4”… if it was my personal home I would be matching the reveal on all 4 sides of the window, but I would have more control over the drywall or jamb extensions to do so… don’t have that time or luxury in the track homes with DR Horton unfortunately.
Thank you for your inspiration, look forward to more comments in the future! Have a blessed day 😎
I love your teaching methods man. The hypothetical situation at 9:40 ish I would lightly pencil line against the square the way it is and then measure the gap from the light pencil line to the square line then I can do what I call flipping the angle if that makes sense to you.
Thank you for this video! I have a Century Communities home (in Castle Rock) that was built with a drywall sill. I ripped it out and followed your instructions and they came out amazing and it was fun to install! I did more of a modern look, but the same concept! Thanks for the great tutorial and tips!
You are welcome! Thank you for leaving detailed feedback! Completely understand with the modern look in your home as DR. Horton has a different trim style to their homes! So glad it turned out awesome as you added more detail and design to your home! Your just around the corner, I’m in the Parker area, so let me know if you have any questions in the future…more videos coming soon, just takes me a while to get them together and edited… talk to you later! 😎
Thank you for this. I am planning on doing all of ours because I HATE the drywall sills, but it didn’t even occur to me that I need to rip them out. I was thinking I could just install over it, but when we replace windows someday that would be a problem.
@@huntercarlson5446 amazing video guide, do I really need all the tools you have to cut wood or if I have to buy my first tool to cut wood which one should I get?
@connektion pro what’s the modern look window sill?
@@natalie4787same question here.
Thank you for this video!! I've watched many, but never did anyone tell me HOW to take the measurements and why. I really appreciate it...especially owning a 70 year old house. Now I'm much more confident to replace the two window sills in this house.
If you ever do a barndoor or pocket door, I would watch that many times!! Plus crown molding. I can never figure out how to cut that stuff. :/
Keep the great videos coming!! :D
I want to thank you very much for taking your time to compliment the video! If you have any questions on those 2 window sills please let me know!
Funny u ask...my very first video I recorded was a barn door, but I used 2 cameras and did 2 of them in the same day...long story short it is going to be an editing nightmare for me, but I will definitely work on it for the future!
Crown moulding only requires a couple tricks...so I will add that to the list of future videos for sure! If you beat me to needing help on an install job with crown, once again please ask!
😎😎I hope you have a blessed day/evening!😎😎
Most youtube DIY-ers are really more entertainment than instruction. It's refreshing to see someone laying out step-by-step instructions for those of us that aren't carpenters or experienced hobbyists.
Thank you for this comment! I really am trying to do step by step on my “how to” videos so most can understand the process and likely replicate it for themselves! Please give me pointers and comments along this journey, I am open eyes and ears on what will make me a better person and better channel...thanks again Jay for your time and checking out the channel!
You are a very talented person with an amazing way of explaining everything so clearly.I rarely leave a comment but the passion and joy you share your knowledge left me with no choice but to complement you😊.It’s coming fr a woman w with no experience in Carpentry or construction work but have been watching all your uploads in a row and understanding them.I request you to please make more videos and upload them often on various projects you work on as it is very helpful to us novice people also. If some of you guys are thinking or saying why he doesn’t wear safety glasses, that’s how you know he’s been doing this for a long time , safety is important but a professional knows how to cut material without geeting hurt … good job dude
Appreciate you! I do want everyone to be safe and use the proper safety equipment if they feel to do so! I might not be setting the best example on using glasses, ear protection, knee pads, mask, vacuum, but then it wouldn’t be original to my routine…

Hunter, great video. Can you tell us the make and model of your chop saw and table that it is on?
Perfect! I'm replacing the sills in my garage and this vid was extremely helpful. Much appreciated.

There's actually a way to scribe those gaps created by uneven casing work. Hold the stool against the casing at a slight angle. Hold a pencil against the wall and drag it from front to back. Use a jigsaw to follow that scribe. Got that trick from Norm Abram (the James Brown of DIY).
Love it! Thanks for sharing that trick! So many ways to get the end result, but it’s the easy and simple methods that we need to focus on! I’m gonna try your trick on the next house, see if I can gain some speed or precision in my work! Have a blessed day!
Like the screw driver for spacer instead of wasting time shimming
I think it was a good tutorial.
Thank you very much for the compliment!
This was excellent. But I really despise mdf anywhere - especially where any water can touch it.
Awesome video man! Just purchased a house that we want to add window trim, but thinking the current ears are too short for it to look right. I’m assuming I would need to Replace the stool with the width of the trim determining what the ears width should be on each side? A video of placing trim around the sides and top of these windows would be awesome!!!
Sorry it took a while to answer…you are exactly right on replacing the stool to make the ears bigger! You would want to add the width of your trim and an additional 1/2” (I personally want to see the stool wider than the casing) Unfortunately I don’t do a lot of jamb extending and casing for windows, just the stool and apron. But I will get some footage the next time I get the chance! Thank you for your support and hope this helps! If you have more questions I’ll get back to you faster! Have a blessed day 😎
Great vide brother. I am definitely going to use your tips on making my windows sills. Just was wondering what kind of wood are you using in this video? Also any suggestions between pine and oak?
This ain't his 1st rodeo.....good stffbud👍
Great job 👍 and great information what style router bit did you use on the window slope?
Hey Will thank you for the comment! I’m using a 1/4” beading bit (not round over bit!) The bit is made by Diablo and I buy them at Home Depot...Lowe’s for some reason doesn’t carry that exact bit!
Isn't it a little fragile whiteout something in the window side to hold it up? Great video, straight to the point and good manufacturing
Appreciate you watching and leaving a comment! The back edge of the sill is held up by the nails and caulking from the painter…it might seem fragile, but you should be able to place any picture or plant or whatever you store on the sill and have no problem. The only thing I change is a window sill where a person can get in and out of…(egress window in basement, a window that accesses the roof, etc.) in this case I will use shims to secure the window sill in case some ends up stepping on the sill…
Might seem a little fragile from the video how it is installed, but I assure you it is strong enough to hold whatever can be stacked on top, just not strong enough for a step 😉
Thank you for your time, any questions please let me know! Have a blessed day 😎
question, for example, if you have 5'' on the left side and 5''1/2 on the right, how would you cut to stand both sides with 1'1/2 in front? thank you for your time and share your work.

@@huntercarlson5446 what type of router bit profile are you using? I would like to use the same one on my windows. Thank you!
@@JGS8376 I’m using a 1/4” beading bit by Diablo…purchased at Home Depot…
Beading bit…not roundover bit…both are the same detail but have different size ball bearings that touch the material during the route…
@@huntercarlson5446 thank you! That helps, I really like the bit you used.
No problem! Let me know if you have any other questions! 😎
Particle board sure is nice to work with, but it’s darn weak against moisture.
Right! MDF(medium density fiberboard) is very easy to swell and change form when it gets wet! That’s why the primer coats and paint are so very important to protect the integrity of the material! Thank you for your time watching and commenting! Have a blessed day!
Very instructive! Thanks! What router bit did you use for sill profile?
That looked like what's called a "beading" bit. Most likely with a 1/2" reveal on the center part of the wood.
Hi. Great Video. What is the particular router bit you use? Thanks again
Thank you very much! I’m using a Diablo 1/4” radius beading bit bought from Home Depot. Let me know if you have any more questions! Have a blessed day!
Great video - prescriptive instructions and very engaging host. 1 question is what to do with the sides of the apron - the edges seem like they would be sharp. Do you add sides to the apron like a joint or just paint over them as-is?
Thank you very much for watching and commenting! In this case I will leave the apron ends as is and the painter will caulk and paint everything. The edges aren’t really sharp after paint is applied, but great question. I’m just following the builders specs…some aprons do have actual returns or a 45 degree miter to match the detail on the ends, but in this case the builder just wants a 15 degree miter on the ends. Have a blessed day 😎
