I clean my stove vent filters all the time (every couple of weeks) with dawn dish soap and hot water, but I decided to give your OxyClean method a try....... it was fabulous. This was hassle free and quick. Soak for 10 minutes and rinse and done. This is my new go-to method. BTW, I tried using the dishwasher once to clean the filters, but the caustic chemicals ruined/discolored the filters and mine cost over $70 to replace, which I did. I also tried the oven method once, the grease baked onto the filters instead of melting off and discolored the filters a dark brownish-yellow. Yuk

I always put mine in the dishwasher and use enzyme cleaner (1 Tablespoon in the soap dispenser) instead of soap and both come out clean and smelling fresh. Of course I use 1 cup vinegar in a hot wash cycle to take the calcium buildup out of the thing too so that helps keep the drain clean. As for removing them they either slide sideways or pop off. Sometimes the top of your range can flip up as well and it's good to clean that in case of fire. Check the owners manual to read how to open or run your fingers along the edges to look for a lever or switch or just gently but firmly pull up on the edge to see if it pops up. There ought to be a prop to hold it open during cleaning. Note the drip pans and heating elements will need removed before you get up close and personal poking around on you cooker. Best wishes.

I can't figure out how to post my pic - - - I cleaned my filter about 4 months ago, I don't do much frying. I used a spray mixture I make myself with ammonia and liquid dish soap in it - pretty well dissolves the grease, sprayed it with hot water, then put it in the dishwasher. I agree with what you say about putting it in the dishwasher - we definitely don't want to clog that up with grease!!! Years ago when I had a really badly encrusted filter, I used an auto degreaser on it, then hot water, worked like a charm.

After its boiling pour baking soda like a cup and after you pour it it will Zizzle then u put in filter let it sit like a minute if it fits the whole filter or just do half of it then turn it over the the undone side. You're right about boiling hot water and enzyme cleaners, I use a powder for clothes hand washing and it works wonders after an hour of soaking and minor scrubbing. The downside to it is firstly you have to wear gloves when you scrub cause enzymes are really tough oh the hands, and secondly you have to rinse thoroughly to get the detergent off (especially powdery ones). After all if you do deep fry or just fry on the stovetop often it's essential that you do it once a month or just whenever you see it start building grease. The less greasy, the less time it'll take to clean.

In the 4 years that I've lived in my house, I confess that I've never cleaned my exhaust filters. I always dread it bc it seems too hard to do. Your way makes it seem so much easier. I think I do have some oxy-clean. Thanks!
BTW, I guess I'm the only one that noticed, but there's a typo on "exhaust" in the beginning of the video. ;)

It's super easy - it is just a matter of doing it now! And yes, we noticed the typo AFTER it was uploaded. Ah, can't be perfect all the time ;)

Oh no! I did once put it in the dishwasher 😬 I pre-soaked it and scrubbed it before and only did it to finish cleaning it but either way I won't be doing it again! Thanks for the tips!

Update: I just tried this, and it didn't even take ten minutes. I used Sard Wonder OxyPlus "Degreaser" formula, and not only did it clean the filter, but it cleaned my brush when I lightly ran it over the filter! Most impressed!

Great video, great site! Two questions for you Melissa: In my country I can only find alcohol and hydrogen peroxide in a pharmacy. I did my research but I found that I can't find isopropyl alcohol but only ethyl alcohol 70% - will it do the work as well? And as for hydrogen peroxide, there is only one H202 that containes only 3% of Hydrogen Peroxide in a dark bottle! Do I need to find clean 100% of that or I can use it as well? Please respond, Im really eager to make some DIY cleaning products!

Great video, thanks and can’t wait to try! Just had a question, how do I dispose of that greasy water in the bucket post cleaning the filters? Pouring it down any drain will be clogging that drain up with grease too isn’t it?

I loved your video on oven cleaning ( the racks and being that I have an electric stove I'll include the drip pans from the burners ) this looks like it takes no effort at all and you could actually start when you get up in the morning and then you will have a clean oven rack by the time you took dinner or you can make a cold dinner like a sandwich. or take out!!! thanks

The person who owned my current home never cleaned the range hood. I could write my name in the grease. I took some Dollar tree oven cleaner and sprayed both sides of the filter and let sit over night. Same with the hood and of course I had to change the light bulb too. It's been three years and every two weeks I clean the hood to keep it from building up again. I still cringe at the memory. LOL!
