Your essential oil hack could be dangerous for skin. Really you should dilute a few drops of essential oil in a teaspoon/so of a base/carrier oil. SOME essential oils CAN be used directly on skin, others will burn your skin, & sometimes the damage can be permanent. Essential oils are 'natural', but you do need to follow some rules to make sure you are using them safely. I'm aware the way you were using it was different, but you still have to be careful to dilute it first. I'm a qualified aromatherapist btw.
Another safer way is to use a sprinkle of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) in shoes, tap it out the next morning. Bicarb is great for eliminating odors and cleans & refreshes shoes. Same with carpets. Our daughter is allergic to/gets contact dermatitis to a lot of products, so we always make our own 'carpet powder' with plain old sodium bicarb and I often add food-safe orange extract, cinnamon powder or mint tea leaves to it to help 'perfume'/fragrance it. Works well!

As a young adult, a friend of mine taught me to turn my clothes inside out before drying. In that way, the inside of the garment fades, while the outer side holds its color longer. I use a line now, and do the same thing.

Pro tip from a professional jeweler: use dish soap and cleaning ammonia instead of rubbing alcohol. This mimicks professional cleaning solution and won't ruin any jewelry. (Works even better in an ultrasonic cleaner too)

My daughter has played softball her entire life (now 17) travel ball, recreational ball, & school ball. I’d safely estimate that 90% of the teams she’s been on had WHITE as their either pant color or socks 🙄. One year while complaining about the insanity and trying to get and keep them clean all season long another mom told me to try a couple caps of MURPHY’S OIL (yes the hardwood cleaner) in the load of whites and they would come clean. I thought for sure that she was either crazy or without a doubt the oily residue left behind would make the laundry much worse but desperate I tried it and I was absolutely shocked at the results. It really works and doesn’t leave any residue. I actually use about 4 caps in all of my laundry now including my colors and my towels and it works amazingly. Way better than oxy clean or bleach or anything thing else I’ve ever tried. 😉

With a fair degree of skepticism, I tried your hack for cleaning the overhead hood filters as that's been one of my pet peaves for quite some time. I've always used degreaser and have not been fully satisfied with results. To my very pleasant surprise, this hack did work really well. I used a cookie baking sheet instead of the bucket for the added benefit of getting it all done at one time. A quick rinse with hot water and done. Thanky you.

Another added benefit to your last hack about peppermint essential oil in the car: During this pandemic I drove a LOT less and there were times my car sat for weeks in the garage. I found out mice can find their way INTO your car (and mine is not an old model). My mechanic said there is no way to stop up all the potential openings. But mice are repelled by peppermint, so a few drops of peppermint on a cotton ball in your glove compartment has been enough to keep the mice out of my car. So no more nesting in my glove box. Whew!

Balsam Fir Oil is also a rodent repellent. There is a product made by “earthkind” for this reason, which has fir scented pouches of some kind of plant fibers. Of course these can be made at home. The box says that one bag lasts 30 days, (or just refresh the bags with a few drops of oil). They work great

Not too scientific: I fill my spray bottle with up to 50/50 vinegar and water then add about 10-20 drops each of orange and lavender. I go heavy on the vinegar as I want to get oxygen bubbles when I add to baking soda for scrubbing and a bit of bleaching that's easy on my hands.

After soaking the shower head don’t just pour the vinegar down the drain. You can reuse it to freshen up your drain by first pouring down a quarter to a half cup of baking soda before pouring the vinegar in. Leave it sit for an hour or overnight if you’d like and then pour some boiling water through the drain. This will help clean out any grease and gunk that may be building up and help leave your bathroom smelling fresher.

My late grandma long before the Internet existed always talked about white vinegar for cleaning. As a tech, I always used rubbing alcohol on keyboards, mice, motherboards, etc and you only need a little bit because it dissipates quickly. I have used a chip brush on keyboards for years now to dust them off. Baking soda is great to get rid of odors on plastics and in glass jars so you can reuse them but it lightens the coatings on aluminum baking pans. I always put my earrings into the cap of rubbing alcohol before wearing them and then rinsed the cap out with hot water. I love the satisfaction of how things look after cleaning them and working with my hands in general. Thanks for sharing and have a great holiday.

My favorite DIY cleaning hack is equal parts hydrogen peroxide, dawn dish soap, and baking soda - this works on any stain on light colored clothing, but it absolutely removes the yellow under arm stains on men’s white undershirts. you mix all 3 ingredients, then apply and scrub gently with an out toothbrush and let sit for at least 1/2 hour. Then when you wash don’t use bleach - it actually doesn’t really whiten clothes all that well. The best whitener is a combo of 2 lemons and 1 cup each of washing soda and hydrogen peroxide - it is one of Melissa makers diy for whitener. However, I just use the juice from the lemons instead of the whole lemon (less messy that way).

My experience with adding tennis shoes to the dryer is it causes them to come apart at the soles. My suggestion: if you find a pair of tennis shoes you like, buy two pair. While one is drying, wear the other pair.
Another tip: if you find great tennis shoes on sale for your kids, buy a couple sizes up. You won't be caught off guard when their shoes no longer fit.

@@SandraMessenger That's why I said it's the easiest way to clean it. Not the only way. I didn't always have a dishwasher either. You can also do what I said above and then after rinsing it soak it in hot water and dish soap then give it a little scrub and it'll be nice and clean. That's how I cleaned mine before owning a dishwasher. It only takes an additional few minutes to clean it this way. Don't let it soak too long though, it will rust. A few minutes, max.

I don’t know if you talked about this already, but one thing I do after I vacuum either with my stick vacuum or my big corded vacuum is I clean the dirt cup and wash the filters after each use. I always have extra filters on hand so I don’t have to wait for the others to dry. It keeps your vacuum looking and working like new and I feel it greatly extends the life of the machine. It also keeps it from smelling bad. After all, vacuums are expensive and no one wants to keep having to replace them or having them not work well

Top tip - To clean the inside of a dirty /greasy/cruddy microwave- fill a cup/mug half to 3/4 full of water, if you have any lemon or lime juice squirt some into the water (the juice isn't essential but will remove any nasty odours that are lingering inside the microwave) place the cup/mug in the microwave and switch it on high power for 5-10 mins. When it stops carefully open the door and with a heatproof glove or towel take the mug out BE CAREFUL THE MUG WILL BE. VERY HOT!!
Take a clean cloth and simply wipe down the inside of the microwave. The steam from the boiling water softens ALL the grease and dried on burnt food meaning everything will come clean with one wipe, no need to scrub! If there are stubborn patches just repeat the process. If you want extra sparkle spray the inside and outside of the microwave with glass cleaner and polish with a dry cloth.
Never scrub a microwave again! This method had NEVER failed me and I used it on the microwave that was in the canteen of the quarry where I worked, it was DISGUSTING, covered in burnt on food 🙈 it cleaned up like new 👍🏻

As a runner who spends $120-$200 per pair of running shoes, it was physically painful to hear the suggestion of putting your shoes through the washer and dryer. Please, don’t do that. They use glue on parts of most shoes and the heat from the washer and dryer loosens the hold and eventually compromises the integrity of the rubber and foam components. Hand wash your shoes in cool to warm(not hot) water. I use oxyclean and laundry detergent. Then set them in front of a household fan. If you want to speed up the drying time, you can crumple newspaper’s and put it inside to help absorb extra water.

I got a container of Dawn Professional dish soap. It comes with a pump, and it's meant to be heavily diluted. This means that, for an average household, you probably won't use it very fast. I use it as my multi-purpose cleaner. I figure, if it works for dishes, it should work for just about anything. Right? We have glass dishes, stainless steel, plastic...if we know that this stuff is safe for those surfaces, might as well use them nearly everywhere. Plus, small children eat stuff off the floor all the time. Might as well make the floor safe to eat off of. :D (so, yes I use it on my floors as well)!
