- How to clean range hood filters... How about using the products you probably have at home in the cupboard to easily clean the range hood filters, but which to use?
Cleaning the grease from the stove hood filters is a job we all tend to forget about, and after months or years of fats, grease, steam and smoke build up we are going to need something pretty special to remove that grimey stuff.
I try 3 different cleaning methods and show you the results. You can judge for yourself and chose the one you prefer. I hope this video helps you out with this cleaning chore.

For this I used;
1. Dishwasher powder or crumbled up dishwasher tablet
2. Baking Soda and Dish detergent
3.Spray oven cleaner
these all took 20-30 mins to work, during this time I made a baking soda and water paste and cleaned the stainless steel extractor fan housing.

Thank you so much for your video! I found it after getting nowhere scrubbing at them with a spray degreaser, I did your baking soda and boiling water method and they look as good as new now I’m chuffed
That’s awesome jessica, we’ll done mate👌 Kent
I was hunting around the house for something to clean my filter with.
Thought about dishwasher, then saw your vid.
I smashed up a dishwasher tablet in the packet, then ripped it open and put it into the water.
Then placed the filter in the water and it instantly started working.
Then pored a jug of boiling water in there tub and presto, it went crazy..
My filter hadn’t been cleaned for more than 20 yrs, so it was pretty bad.
Thankyou so much for your help :)
Hi Kent, thank you so much to showing how to clean the hood filter, it's very helpful 👍
You are welcome Niwei, thanks for the nice comment 👍Kent
You're very kind to demonstrate the various methods👏👏👏💯
Thanks, which one did you use? Kent
Very useful comparison. Good idea on the dishwasher tablet!
Cheers deadelius, it was a fun experiment. Kent
Great results from each of the three methods. We normally put the filters in the dishwasher but will try the oven cleaner next time. Thanks for your tips.
Thanks for the comment Brian, all the best. Kent
Thanks for this - I like the scientific approach
Haha.. We’re allowed to play with chemicals and such when we call it science (or cleaning)😉 Kent
Thanks for sharing ! This is my least fav domestic chore, but knowing what works is motivating.
you're welcome kjh, a little motivation helps huh! cheers, Kent
Been sticking my filters in the dishwasher for years once every 5 months, remove racks place 2 filters as an A frame leaning at top together use a filter cleaner Tablet for this, and it will keep the dishwasher clean as well
Thanks for the video.I will do the one with the dishwashing liquid and baking soda.
Good stuff Jaggerdoos 🤙
Thanks for doing that. Great and resourceful video.
The Claudos.. thanks so much for a lovely comment, appreciate it. Kent
Have the same exact filters, thanks for the tips!
Hey Lintahlo, you’re welcome mate. Good luck with the cleaning job👍 Kent
So glad I found you - excellent help 👍👏
Thanks mate, very kind😉 Kent
Glad to see I'm not the only one who uses their hand to guide the water out of the tap. 😃
I'm planning to clean tomorrow as per your direction. Thank you
Thanks Nelson, what product/method are you going to use?
Thanks for the video. I will try the dishwasher tablets. Doing it now. Hopefully to see the result just like in your video.
Hey Anny, let us all know how you get on👍 Kent
I like dishwash taplet cleaning method. Very easy and not expensive. 👌
Great stuff Selvakumary 👌well done. Kent
Very helpful and saves buying new filters, Thank You 👍
Hey Kev, good on you mate - that's what I reckon too, it's a little more resourceful hey! Cheers, Kent
@@InspireDIY 👍👍
Great job.I wish you had given the cola and baking soda a try which what I was going to try for the first time today .Well spoken and enjoyed every min of the video thank you 🙏
Thanks Zypce Brothers, that’s very kind, thanks for watching and commenting👍Kent
Thank you so much ! I need to try this. Dishwashing tablets waiting me
Yeah it works pretty well, let me know how you get on Michell👍
Great demo, thanks!
Glad you liked it Paul, happy cleaning 🤙 Kent
Thank You!! This was very helpful 🙌🏼🙌🏼
You’re welcome T Robbie, which technique or product are you gonna choose? 🤔
Dishwashing tablet worked great 👍 thanks mate
Thanks Hamid, we’ll done mate! Kent
Put the thing in the dishwasher by itself, run a regular wash cycle - easy - done!
Good on ya James👍 Kent
Thank you so much for this video. My grease filters were in a horrible condition and I used quite an amount of dish detergent and vinegar to soak them overnight. Unfortunately the grease turned into glue and the situation seemed hopeless. I really thought I had to buy new filters. Then I found this video and I tried the Amway automatic dish tabs and they had worked wonders for me. I had to use one tab for each filter and they came out sparklingly clean after soaking for 30 minutes and a little brushing. No discolouration. Thank you again!
Hey Yeefan, that’s awesome mate! And thanks for letting us all know what worked for you 👌 cheers, Kent
G'day from a cool and wet Sydney. Great video mate. I have the very same range hood which hasn't been cleaning since we moved into our home nearly 4 years ago. I'll definitely use the dishwashing tablet. I know I'm doing for the rest of today!
Hey Beazle, yeah its soggy up here in Northern Rivers too, how did you get on with that thrilling job this arv?
Haha I am in anew house too and just forgot it needed doing so I have bicarb so I’ll do one in bicarb one in dishwasher tablets. Can’t wait to see them sparkling lol
Good on you Beazle, best of luck👍Kent
Great video. I ended choosing the dishwasher tablet. It worked although I use the baking soda paste like you said to gently scrub the grease that stuck in the corners. It beats using the commercial degreaser, which needs more scrubbing and is toxic. Thank you.
Great review, thanks Klara. 👍Kent
Hi InspireDIY, Thanks for this great video. Oven cleaner trick worked for me. In the end I poured the hot water and I left it for 2 minutes to soak and then gave a little clean with a bottle brush and dish washing liquid to remove anything remaining dirt. Thank you so much.
Hey Anto, great question! I didn’t and it worked well at room temperature👍 Kent
@@InspireDIY Thank you for your quick response. You are very kind. Yes I didn't start the oven.
it'll be the dishwash tab for me next time ! thanks from ol blighty
Thanks, well presented. Be well. Rob
Thanks Rob, you’re very kind👍Kent
Thanks so much for this video!
Hey Sonali, what method did you try?
I went for the oven cleaner, what a great job, cleaned with very hot water - no scrubbing and can see through the filters again. If you spray outdoors the fumes at too bad.
You’re right about those fumes Kevin .. so spraying them outside is a golden suggestion 👌 well done, Kent
I’ll try oven clear for me because I don’t have dishwasher tablets.. thank you for your information from Melbourne Australia
Good stuff Leo, cheers for the vote! 👍Kent
I used option number 2 and OMG, it worked so much. But still some grease remained but it worked quite well.
Cheers Daniel 🤙 Kent
I put my filters in the dishwasher bimonthly which avoids too much gunk down the drains.
You are on the money Chris, the maintenance wash is fine (I am told). Great suggestion 👍 Kent
Great stuff. thankyou for this tip😊❤
Glad it was helpful Sal, happy cleaning 🤙 Kent
Thank you for this comparison. I hate cleaning these things!
Me too.
Oven cleaner method was a success! I allowed the oven cleaner to sit on mine for 2 full hours. I rinsed with water, but some grease was a little stubborn so I had to use a scrub brush and dish soap as well. They looked great! But to be extra clean I popped them into the dish washer with Cascade detergent, and turned it onto the sanitize cycle. They look practically brand new! I think now I should be able to do weekly cleaning/maintenance with the dishwasher. I feel like as long as you do a weekly clean, then there won't be a need for oven cleaner again.
Great tips sally, thanks for being an experimental scientist and letting us all know 👍👍Kent
I did the oven cleaner method a few hours ago and it worked. I used Easy Off fume free (much better). I followed the host's directions. A lot of greasy residue and gunk came out. Since I hadn't cleaned my filter in a while, I added some Dawn dishwashing liquid to the filter for another 15 minutes and rinsed it out with hot water. It is very clean and sparkly. From now on I will clean it more often. Again, thank you for sharing!
VERY HELPFUL THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Cheers Michail 🤙 Kent
Hi mate I m from Melbourne.Your video is very informative and I like it.I used every thing to clean the filters even I used white king bleach but I didn’t get white and clean as I wanted . Today I m going to clean the filters with dishwashing tablets. Thanks mate
Hey Fatima, thanks for the comment, let us know if it cleans it up well for you! 👍Kent
What a great advise, thanks! I ended up using soda and washing up liquid, but I didn’t have big enough tray so I put it in the sink, the fat was literally melting away in front of my eyes, I used two full kettles of boiling water per each filter, didn’t need to wait, didn’t need to scrub and soda helps with odour in the sink so it kills two birds with one stone!
This is awesome! I have 7 years of gunk and grease stuck on my two range hood filters. After seeing your video, I chose to use good old baking soda, lots of Dawn dishwashing liquid and boiling water. The results are amazing! My filters are sparkling clean and good as new! Thank you!
Hey Arlene, that's awesome! Thanks for letting us know what method worked for yours, well done. Kent
So Amazing, I sure try that, btw how much scrubbing was that?
wacking good clean mate like the dish washing tablet above all
Cheers Gareth, me too 👌 Kent
Thank you so much for your video.
You are welcome Ons! Kent👍
Good video mate.
Thanks again Michael, it's great to have you join me👌 Kent
Thanks mate. Think I will try the oven cleaner, out side😅.
How did you go Brad? Do you recommend it - or anything else?🤔 Cheers, Kent
Thank you , very helpful
cheers Priscilla, very kind! Kent
I'm going to try the oven cleaner method. I have the Easy Off fume free version. It doesn't irritate my lungs or skin. I love using it to clean my oven. It always does a great job! Can't wait to use it on my filter. Thank you for doing these comparisons.
Oh cool Daisy, can you let us know how it works? The ‘fume free’ sounds like a great option! Thanks, Kent
@@InspireDIY I definitely will.
So how does it work
@@nihilisticprophet6985 I had responded in the comments the day after I had tried the easy off (fume free) oven cleaner. It worked well. I also used some Dawn dishwashing liquid and left it on for another 15 minutes, because I hadn't cleaned it in a while. It came out very clean.
Thanks. Excellent!
You are most welcome Richard! Thanks mate, Kent
Mine went straight in the dishwasher. Used several tablets. Came out as good as new. Then ran a cycle clean straight after when it was still hot.
Good on you m van, sounds like an easy way to go about it🤙 Kent
I'm wondering if I can also throw my AC filters in the dishwasher? @@InspireDIY
@@melatomicIf it helps, I clean my AC filters by wiping off excess dirt with a paper towel. Then, soak them jn a solution of a dash of domestos and water in the bath. Leave for 10 mins, then swish filters up and down like you’re panning for gold. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry outside in fresh air before returning them. Hope that helps.
Very helpful 👍thank you 🤩
Hey Asi, which did you choose? cheers, Kent
@@InspireDIY hey After several failed attempts, 100% succeeded in the oven cleaner
My filter is made from aluminium, it’s discoloured from using a dissolved dishwashing tablet. Since mine is inserted into a cover no one really sees it, but something for others to keep in mind if they want them to stay looking shiny and new to avoid oxidising agents. Hot water and dish liquid on a more frequent basis might be better
Thanks Nicole, great advice👍 Kent
Caustic bad for aluminium. Need the proper commercial product. Or maybe baking soda.
That's exactly what happened to mine 😢
What are oxidising agents? Is elbow grease an oxidising agent? Why is fairy liquid better?
I clean my filter with dishwashing liquid and then put it in the dishwashing machine, It didn't clog and came really clean, with less work,
You life saver! My tenants left me a grease filter filled rock solid with grease. Couldnt see through it. For 2 days I was soaking in hot soapy water with a bit of bicarb soda and only got out 50%. Then I watched your video - oh, I need to put on that much bicarb soda. So I followed your style and the remaining gunk is out in one go!
That’s awesome Lisa, glad it helped mate👌 cheers, Kent
Easy method……put them in the actual dishwasher ! Works a treat
Hey Nannieg, I'm tempted! cheers, Kent
Thank you so much
Hey Basanti, you are welcome🤙cheers, Kent
Thanks! My home came with great appliances, but the area under the microwave with built-in vents (above the range) has little globs of grease from the previous owner. Yuck. The dishwasher tablet did an easy, no-mess job for the filters, but the underside that I can't remove was another story. I got most of it with a thick paste of baking soda, dish soap, hot water and a grout brush, but some plastic areas just won't come clean at all.
Thanks for letting us know how you got on👌it’s a grimey job hey! Kent
Good job❤
Thanks mate, Kent
Thank you !
Welcome, 👍Kent
BRAVO. Merci pour la traduction en Français , c'est gentil. Tres bien fait ce vidéo.
umm... merci pour le commentaire, tu es très gentil, Kent
I will try today
Hey Joao, let us know which you choose and how it goes👍 Kent
Thank you
You are welcome 😉, Kent
When I have greasy pans, I put a dish tablet in them and let them soak overnight. Next day they are super easy to clean. Just rinse out and was with soap and water
Hey VeganMomma, you are clearly a smart cookie! Great tip 👌 thanks, Kent
Nice video
Thanks Chetna
I used Koh on mine .Fantastic.
Hey Sharyl, I haven’t heard of this product! It mustn’t be in Australia/New Zealand.
@@InspireDIY It definitely is in Australia. I have used it for the past 10 years. You can buy it online.
@@InspireDIY Hi I have used this product for the last 10-12 years and yes it definitely is in Australia. An online company in NSW Thankyou
How about a soak in a sink with baking soda sprinkled over it and some vinegar pored over it? Rinse with hot water when it is done fizzing. Great side effect is that it helps to clean your drain when you remove the stopper.
We have product in America called Awesome and it fits it's name. Best cleaner I have ever found. Although I do like to be more ecofriendly. Thx for the video
Great suggestion J Aune👍 thanks, Kent
Good video
Thanks Mess, what do you use? Kent
Thanks for the video!
You're welcome Mark, cheers for the comment. Kent
Excellent options and very thorough with your demo! We need to be educated as some of us immigrants who are used to cleaning back home in our country of origin, literally struggle with the gunk in hoods, stove tops, ovens, griddles, BBQs, sinks, windows, vents, fans, doors. I definitely have learned something after 23 of living abroad and not knowing how to maintain a level of cleanliness in tge kitchen! Kudos to articulate demos like yours.
thanks for the lovely comment Charmaine, Kent
To clean off a sticky residue left on my filters from a previous botched clean, I soaked them in your 1 cup of Bi-Carb in boiling water mix (omitting the dishwashing detergent) for a few hours and with minimum light scrubbing and hot water rinse, they came out sparkling clean and all sticky residue gone 😊. Thankyou 🎉. That Easy Off Oven Cleaner has gone up in price from $3.50 to $5.75 now with Inflation- a horrible product to use inside a confined space like the Oven- can burn your skin, and damage lungs- not worth the risk.
Thanks for the feedback Jo - I’m glad to hear they have come up spotless👌 cheers, Kent
I used the baking soda but added some vinegar,, worked well
Good stuff Steven 👌cheers.
thanks
Welcome🤙
I used lots hot water straight from the Rinnai hot water unit into the laundry (used lots so it would maintain a hot temperature) and sprinkled in some magic Finish "dust." Let sit for 5 minutes then gently scrubbed with a long handled nylon brush so I would get my fingies burned. There was about 10 years of gunk built up on this so they were chocka full of oily residue but 5 minutes was plenty. I did do a second full wash but that was totally unnecessary.
The down side was my OCD then compelled me to clean the oven hood due to it being a oh so obvious yellow colour compared to the filters. For the last 6+ years I have been trying to get charcol filters for this rubbish hood but even the manufacturer can't get them made to fit the hood so I guess they (and the Good Guys) aren't getting my money for the new filters I was going to replace the old dirty/now clean shiney ones with.
*Thank You* for this. Never occurred to this grumpy old bastard that they could be cleaned so easily. Much appreciated. 👍👍👍 (one for each filter)
Haha Joseph, I’m sure you aren’t a grumpy ol’ bastard🙂 and thanks for that great comment, I appreciate it mate🤙 Kent
Thank you. So...I decorated, putting antique glass jars and stuff ontop my cabinets, everything had a film of grease. I have not cleaned them in about eight years. I’ve been using hot water and Dawn, but they are not squeaky clean. I heard oven cleaner is the best, but do not had gloves. I will get them. I need to now clean my cupboards, they are greasy, too.
Good luck with your cleaning mission Blonde K, can’t say I’m envious😉 Kent
I like the stove cleaner the best
Thanks Rosemarie, it's toxic stuff - but it works a treat huh!. Kent
I use acetone for the range and for the filters I use a mix of half cup of dish soap and one cup of white vinegar, set up for one hour and rinse with very hot water.
Great tip Narda, I am going to try this with some dirty filters here at home👍 let the experiment begin
@@InspireDIY you very welcome,my pleasure, you can also use that mix of vinager and dish soap equal parts for the showers, works very well,
Put it on spray bottle, let it set up for 10 minutes, use the squeeze sponge map and Walla. I use that mix 🤣 for many things, I take always a bottle with the mix before heading to the car wash,
I sprayed on the front bumper to take care of the bugs.
glad you talked about the toxic product of oven cleaner as unnecessary; I also use vinegar with the baking soda, dishwasher liquid and boiling water - no toxic anything required, and no can for the landfill.
Good stuff Lynadamson, thanks for the comment. Kent
Thanks 🙏🏻
Your welcome Jimmy, which one do you use? Kent
@@InspireDIY #2
Good stuff Jimmy🤙
Thanks for these tips ,is this the actual filter because
Have been advised to buy charcoal carbon filter to fit on the fan inside .
Hey. Yes this is the filter, and you are right you can add a charcoal filter. Add it above the metal ones otherwise they clog up too fast👍 Kent
I use the soda and dish detergent with hot water but I also add a cup of white vinegar and there is no need of brush.
Hey Sofia, there is a theory that vinegar and baking soda neutralise each other and we just end up with a salty base - still seems to work though huh 🤔 thanks for the tip, cheers, Kent
bicarb, dish soap and boiling water.....perfect results...no doubt if it works you are more inclined to keep it clean in the first place!
Well done Chris, love it🤙 Kent
I've got all these products (same brands except for baking soda) so all I need to do it DO IT. I think I will use the dishwashing tab
Hey Diane, let us all know how it goes for you 👍 Kent
I clean my filters every two months I soak them in a large plastic tub use a combination of citric acid bicarbonate of soda and a squeeze of of lemon they come up really good requiring the least amount of rinsing after
Great tip Kym, Cheers, Kent
How much of each ingredient
I used Borax on mine and it was instantly clean!
Great suggestion Rose 👌 Kent
I'd use 2 tbs (~30g) each washing soda and clear detergent instead of the baking soda for 15 minutes. No scrubbing required. Washing soda is sodium carbonate, the same primary ingredient as dishwasher tablets, but is more convenient and versatile.
Great suggestion mate👍 thanks, Kent
Hi, great video. I choose the baking soda and dw liquid. the metal on my filters are no longer silver. the filter is clean but the metal has discoloured (brownish). any ideas?
This happened for me too, darker gray stains. I wonder what happened
Same me too
Did you soak it the same amount of time as he did?
Hi, I have question, do I need to put inside (and turn on) the oven after we applied the oven cleaner? or just let it sit in the open air?
Hey Erwin, great Q. in case of ‘Meltable’ materials like the plastic edging on some filters I would leave at room temp to be safe👍 cheers, Kent
I wonder if Oxi clean would work on this type of grease?
Oh yeah Beastly, I’ve seen it done on ‘Clean My Space’ and it worked well, great suggestion 👍 Kent
2:20,
mine got a lotta grime in there cos there like 3 layers of meshing
might have to pressure wash it a bit
Well Steve, let us know which one worked best for you👌 cheers, Kent
My filter got clean with a soak in baking soda/dishwashing liquid. Problem is though that there's what looks like aluminum shreds caught in between the two layers of mesh in the filter. It's clean shreds now, but the shreds are still there, and they fall out of the filter on to the stovetop. Any suggestions as to how to get them out of there? I can't find a place where the mesh can be taken apart. My filter isn't flat, it's sort of bowed? Like a third of a circle?? IDK how else to describe it. Designed that way, it's not due to age or anything like that.
Use a vacuum? To suck it out?
Egad. My filters are caked with grease. I need to check under my sink for oven cleaner. I can spray them outside in my backyard. If there is no oven cleaner, I know I have dishwasher detergent. Thank you.
Well done Susan, how did you get on? Kent
I have been putting them in the dishwasher. I am going to start using oven cleaner. I use that for the outdoor grill anyway so I have it on hand. ...and it sounds like we're gonna have to start calling you sausage fingers;)
Thanks FunctionForm, one vote for the oven cleaner, and that's one heck of a nickname. Haha😂
You did it quite well .... Would caustic soda be more helpful ???
great suggestion Raj, have you used it in the past? do you reccomend it? cheers, Kent
If you use oven cleaner spray, check the ingredients for sodium hydroxide, the chemical name for lye. If your filter is made of aluminum, the lye will dissolve it.
Thanks Doug for the great ‘heads up’! I believe it takes both high concentrations and time to do so, but better to play safe hey👍 Kent
When you use easy off, place the parts inside plastic bag ( trash bag) spray the product inside de bag and close the bag and let it set up overnight, the product doesn't dry and works very good, also you get less of the fumes, always use a face mask and gloves, easy off is very strong.
Thanks again Narda, great tip👍
@@InspireDIY very welcome 🤗
I'm going to try the dishwasher tablet method. But I would be concerned about hitting my stainless hood with a brush and baking soda that it would show scratch marks. I use hot soapy water and a micro fiber, and then follow up with stainless cleaner and micro fiber.
Hey Superfly, thanks for your reply, the brush and baking soda combo left no marks on my range hood, but did require a soapy water wipe down before it was shiny again✨ I can appreciate what you are saying, and your technique is sound advice. Thanks so much👍 Kent
OxiClean. Instantaneous release of 100% of the grease. Get a large enough shallow tray or sink and mix OxiClean with very hot water, drop in the filter and bang, it's grease-free.
Awesome tip, Thanks mate, Kent
@@josmith2002 I don't make many videos about such things. But sorry you found it did not work. I've done it many times with instant results.
👍
I used baking soda and dish soap with hot water and scrubbed it but it has left grey stains on it now from where i poured the soap. What happened? Does it just need to dry or is it ruined
Hey Maria, I’m not sure as I’ve not come across this before.. maybe clean them again by adding the dish liquid to the hot water before adding filters giving it a chance to disperse evenly💁🏻♂️any suggestions from the community?
