The "best" MMO is subjective. Everyone will have a different opinion of what the best game in x genre is, but what is objective, indisputible fact, is player numbers. And today we're going to discuss what the most played MMOs are in 2024 - doing a mid year update.
Since a lot of these games don't have 100% concrete numbers - we're going to be using several metrics. Steam numbers, officially disclosed numbers, leaked numbers, addons, community sizes. It's worth noting that many of these games also have multiple launchers and release on a variety of platforms. Let's begin with..

Dragon Quest X is the only mmo that really stuck to me.

The best mmorpgs are the private server ones from 1985-1995. They are free to play and are so much fun.

I always tinking about mmorpgs and classes... Every player is looting like hell...
Why isn't there a class/job that supports something like this?
Playing as a chef: Cooking and buffing and be a decent warrior to farm his materials.
Playing as an alchemist: Brewing and buffing... and be an explosive range character.

If you are actually asking i can tell you that Final fantasy 14 online kynda has this system. You can be your own chef, alchemist and other gatherer and crafter classes and then you can go around killing stuff with your battle class to kill stuff and gather materials aswell. I did do this for a while and it was fun but inventory management became a bish so i quit doing it xD
Im not sure of other games that have this gathering and crafting system to make your battle class stronger but i assume Guild Wars 2 and World of warcraft have them. Heck i think even Tower of fantasy you can do this.

Non of the mentioned mmos has a support class that provides very useful buffs that last 30min and most of the mmos have 0 interaction with other players required to do anything.
They are Massively singleplayer online

wow was so addicting back when it was my VERY first time playing it (my very first mmorpg) during burning crusade and then wrath of lich king. UNTILL...... TERA came out and then it changes my whole perspective and expectation on MMOs. like graphics, character design, combat... But right now wow is okay if you're really bored and have nothing to play and trying to kill time with something to play.
I'm playing Guildwars 2 and Embers Adrift on occasion.

You dont use steam to see runescape player count, most of them play on a special launcher outside steam, there are more than 120k players online everyday
Black Desert tortures its players, but here I am going back for more every single day 😢. I think I've aged a bit as well 👴.
I didn't played a lot of MMO's but I didn't find the mood of GW2 in any other online game. It's way cheaper then other games in proportion of what it offers, but the most important thing is that it is designed to not be toxic in any way, you can't steal loot, you can't steal kills, everybody obtains what they deserve, no P2W at all, pvp extremely fair, and, besides all of this, the game content various is massive and the gameplay is an absolute fun.
Only 1 thing to add, I personally would disregard any numbers comparison that come from steam, most of these games did not release ONLY and/or INITIALLY on steam.
So, those numbers don't represent true playerbase size, they show how much the company spent to promote the game on steam, how well the integration with the platform was made, or how early in the game's life cycle it was added to steam; anyway, none of those metrics are important for this discussion.
That's why I added "It's worth noting that many of these games also have multiple launchers and release on a variety of platforms."
i am comparing player numbers in world of warcraft by using wowprogress and i am sure they are not even half way to legion numbers because number of active guilds and players are maybe not even 1/3 of legion active players and guilds
That number includes wow clasic too so if its said that wow has 7 miilion sub it means half or more then half of that number are playing retail
Correct. It includes all versions of WoW.
I can only speak about Guild Wars 2 and Black Desert Online, as those are ones i keep playing, but those are atm quite good to play.
I dunno about this Guild Wars 3 talk, but i'd say that still seems years away at best. GW2 is a marvelous game, and BDO has been fun to play.
Personally i'd put those into mine top list to check out, along with maybe Warframe and TeS Online. But i admit i haven't played Warframe in a long time, and never actually played TeS, just listening to stories, but i wasn't 5+ years invested into other games and busy with irl stuff, i would check it out.
Warframe is NOT MMO.. MMO refer to you able to see/interact with massive players in the same area. Warframe is just sit at lobby/ship and go instance-based missions with some areas are massive (like in Dojo, some npc area like the one at Earth , etc.
Ngl I really enjoy new world. It's unfortunate the numbers are so low, I think it's underrated. They do need to do something big though to save it.
i recently picked New World back up after hitting level cap 3 years ago. it’s just unfortunate the servers are dead.

But all games are on good level for me
For me, Lineage 2 and Old Republic still beats every single one on the list. we played for a year with wow but it was not my type of game, Tera was an ok mmo too but there were no endgame content.
i'll play WOW when it comes to steam, all my other games are on steam.
What subscription is cheaper, WoW or ffxiv?? Ill go for whichevers cheapest even if its a couple dollars
u better just go ffxiv.. atleast the graphics, stories, gameplay are much much much better than WoW. honestly WoW is just "nostalgic" game so thats why many people still play it while the truth is that game outdated so much in term of aside of story contents.
OMG you didn't mention anarchy online! According to steam charts it's guy a 30 day average of 0.9 players! Clearly this MMO is huge!
Anarchy Online is one the best MMOS ever made. An updated version would be better than most games out here now.

BDO is easily my most favorite mmorpg available now :)

So mostly the same MMOs we've been playing for 10+ years. Truly disappointing that the genre has sunken to this level of scarcity. Even when we had a lot of niche MMOs flooding the market, at the very least they offered temporary fun time sinks. But now get nothing but mobile style mmos, or just mobile games. With auto play, filthy amounts of monetization and gambling, and just awful content. But I'm optimistic. Things have to get worse before they can get better. And when the genre is at the edge, the long standing giants will prove why've they been unmoved, and lead by example ... hopefully.

Played WoW for over 15 years, gameplay itself is fun yet limited, character customization extremely limited. Each MMO genuinely feels like its own country with its own culture.
I mostly have little in common with the WoW Community, specially the Cult of Steve Danuser residing on Wyrmrest Accord.
In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my favourite MMO PSO2 Classic & NGS or What I prefer to call "One of the Weakest Class in Warcraft Lore Isekaied as a Powerhouse of an ARKS Guardian."
The customization is freedom of expression is something I've enjoyed about PSO2, akin to WoW, you could get yourself in massive trouble on role-playing servers when attempting to roleplay as a Vampire Knight.
I personally took breaking that Taboo to the far extreme, not only fully embracing Vampirism but mocking the Knights of the Ebonblade. By having my main create his own Knights Order comprised of Enthralled Members of the Oracle Fleet who fallen in battle. They not only out muscle them, possess superior equipment, and Technologically advanced weaponry, but heavily outnumber them. 😆
In other words, the MMO itself does not matter, long as you're having immense fun. If the MMO is not fun or the community drives you insane with toxicity, simply stop playing.

I'm surprised he listed TOF instead, which is literally gacha-based power creep in his own words. NGS also has more concurrent players...
I rather mmo has bot than have to buy sub fee every month (no matter how many days i really play) and buy ever expansion on top of that , and with all that still be p2w too lol

There’s no sense being best is best. Best is absolute just like Mehta. You can’t have multiple Meadows. There’s one Mehta most efficient can’t have most efficient can have multiple bass. You’re gonna have multiple goods, but not multiple best and there is only there is only one possible because the one that is best will have all the elements everybody’s looking for, you may not use or care about some of them for your particular preferences but if what you like is there and what I like is there and what she likes is there and whatever everybody likes is there then that’s what qualifies his best unfortunately there is no best. There’s just a lot of mediocre and a few good.

One thing to remember about GW2 on Steam is that it's physically impossible to play the game on the platform with a pre-existing account through normal means. In other words, for the vast and overwhelming majority of the games lifespan, none of the accounts made within that time will work. So only a sliver of a minority of the playerbase is playing through Steam. That being people that have only just created an account for the first time for a title that has been around for over a decade, and people that found a way to force Steam to not connect to the game, thus allowing you to log into the game with any account, which few people seem to know is even possible.

At least 1500 people on a server to make it run right on one server and that 7000 is product spread across all regions of the game. New World is bad there might be enough people playing the game and buying shit to keep Amazon happy but the game is dead, it will not be fun if you’re looking for a multiplayer experience

Community is week numbers are just bullshit. The only numbers that are valid or how many people are playing at any given moment on steam that’s the only real number you have. They’re only a couple games. I’m aware of that actually publish their online activity like he has a page that tells you who’s playing right now beyond that you have no idea who’s playing or how many and you can only accept, the word of the game publisher or the game developer and they can’t be trusted either

This is what I've arrived at lately: If you spend all those hours on an MMO per month you might as well just go WoW or FFXIV. F2P games usually end up way more expensive anyway if you want to get the good stuff(or you have to grind your ass off for hours each day), plus they're just inheritably P2W. It's just not worth it in the end

Wow this is sad, mmorpg are going trough a downfall since 2017. The only greats mmorpg are final fantasy or wow. I dont see a good future in this genre tho, even with those new games coming in this year or the next one. I hope im wrong.
