Why the FASTEST team in NHL hockey looks SO slow.

After another blowout in game 2 between the Carolina Hurricanes & New Jersey Devils. We break down how the Hurricanes have been able make the fastest team in hockey, look like they're in quick sand. With players like Jack Hughes & Jesper Bratt, the Hurricanes have found a way to completely neutralize them through games 1 and 2. - Sport
As a Canes fan, I am extremely happy with the first two games, but all they did was hold serve. I expect a totally different Devils team to come out for game 3, the Canes better be ready. I also hope the canes aren't drinking the kool-aid with all the articles, videos, and stories talking about how dominant they've been. It's hard work, focus, and discipline that has been helping, just as much as skill. If they slack off, they will be the ones looking awful. Hopefully Brind'amour has them them focused and ready to go into a hostile environment and a game in which the devils are likely getting 5 power plays.
Devils are going to come out rocking. Can’t wait to see what adjustments they make
I’m hoping and feel like they understand that now. Especially with Rod. Never let off the pedal even if we’ve already lapped the field.
Oh yeah. My biggest worry is them getting confident and comfortable. Too many times we’ve looked like we care too much about protecting the lead to go out there and really challenge the opponent for goals.
We need more hockey fans like you. You know how hockey works and just because you are up two games, you're not cocky about it like some fan bases... (TOR)
I'm a huge devils fan and not sure how the young team will come out. We have a great coach but Canes definitely have proven they're a dominant team.
@@chrisweizenbach1685 Also a Canes fan, but yeah anyone that thinks this series is over and can't/won't change in a hurry are simply clueless.
Shesty aside, I was more worried about a NJD matchup than a NYR matchup. Fans better not be celebrating a return to the ECF too soon.
I'm a Devils fan, hats off to the Canes, they've played fantastic. I still don't think the series is over though, this Devils team has had a knack for coming back this year.
My issue is that NJ tends to look for the pass instead of taking shots. I just want then to put pucks on net and see what happens.
as a canes fan, I personally liked the first game where you had one shot on goal for 25 minutes
Very far from over. They have to find a way to solve that breakout & Neutral zone problem. New Jersey can’t be themselves & get Ozone time because when they finally get possession, they want to make good on it. Hence the hesitancy to just fire the puck. Different mentality when you have possession for a large chunk of the game. When you don’t, you want to hang onto it lol
@@FlyHenryFlyofc you would say that
@@FlyHenryFly yo that’s so sick! It’s almost like the canes had 5 days off while the devils had 1, coming off a game 7 and spent that one day traveling. No shit they’re gonna be slow, especially when one of their best offensive playmakers, and overall best players (Timo) didn’t even play. Gonna be interesting when this series comes back to Newark, this team won’t just lie on their backs and give up
And you weren't even wearing a hat. 😂
This was unreal. Love these in depth breakdowns.
Pls do kraken/stars next
In the works!
What is the depth of saying the Canes apply forecheck?
I was at game two yesterday and am a devils fan. It’s extremely hard to win in that building and you learn why when you go to a game. With the Devils being a young inexperienced team against a team like the canes that make it so hard to generate anything coming out of your own end they had no chance of winning those two games.
Canes fan, hope you still enjoyed the stadium and atmosphere
I think the Canes fans are the friendliest crowd towards fans of most opposing teams. I usually chat up opposition fans: complimenting them on the new team jerseys, asking them about their hometowns, and wishing them a safe trip back home. I moved to Carolina from New York about 30 years ago and absolutely love it here. There are a zillion things to love about New York, but friendly sports fans aren’t high on that list. I also lived in New Jersey for a few years back in the 1980’s, an was a bit of a Devils fan for those years-and Jersey people are a bit friendlier. But nothing beats the atmosphere here in Raleigh. From the tailgating, to the thunderous fan outbursts-it’s now sweet Carolina to me.
The Devils (according to national broadcast) had the puck 53% of the time in game 2. Unfortunately for them most of that time it was in their own zone. Same broadcast said "its like there are 5 Brind'Amours on the ice" Tenacious fore check, sped through the neutral zone and active Defense in the O. Simple... on paper
I think New Jersey's inexperience and youth has been shown. They look nervous and are making mistakes. Dont forget. Half of this team is making their playoff debuts. Lastly many teams have had failures and have had to learn lessons before winning a championship. New Jersey will be fine. They weren't even expected to be a playoff team and they have made to the second round.
Agreed. I think the Canes are such a tough challenge though.
no it’s simply Rob’s system
As an NJ fan. I'm thrilled to think of the years to come
@@ItsDrMobius cap’s gonna be a problem by this off season. Meier trade is a bit of a head scratcher. Dudes been terrible
@chazlucifer I mean, he's been getting chances they just haven't gone in for him. Plus, if you consider what New Jersey gave up for Timo Meier, it's not that much. Plus, sometimes players take a while to adjust. Plus, the cap isn't a big deal in New Jersey right now. They don't have very many bad contracts
This was a great analysis video. It would be great if you can continue with these types of videos.
That’s the plan. Thanks for watching!
Love the more in depth breakdowns. I don't want to count my Devils out, but this definitely feels different than round one 💀
Shouldn’t, Rangers were a far stouter team than the Canes missing their two best players. Devils just have to dig in and actually work for it.
The Canes have always been a fast skating team. Necas was clocked as the fastest skater while possessing the puck last season, and despite being currently injured, Svech won the speed race in the All Star event. Plus Aho, Jarvis, and our defense are incredibly fast.
I for some reason doubt that Necas was the fastest with the puck when Mcdavid has held that title for years. Not talking about just skating, but skating with the puck. I dont see Necas beating him really. I do agree that Carolina is a very fast team.
Its always insane to me how drastically Brind'amour changed that team when he came in. The Canes are probably the most cohesive team in hockey right now, and I don’t really think its close
Defensively they are the best team in years. I just don't know if they can keeping winning with so many forward injuries.
Thank you for the in-depth analysis. Very much appreciated.
Another added advantage to the Canes is that their entire coaching staff (Rod the Bod, Tim Gleason AND Jeff Daniels) are ALL former players (and Hurricanes to boot) and whatever an opponent team throws at them, they've seen it before.
I think that’s a big reason why they were selected. Obviously it was RBA as head coach first really but he makes those decisions who he likes. In his most recent contract, he didn’t want a lot of money. He just wanted his staff to return and he got that
As a Devils fan out here in TX, I’m holding out hope that both the Stars and Devils can make it to the final so I can watch them play lol. Devils have shown they can make a comeback, so they just need to learn from this and adjust.
I hope Brindamour taught my canes that when you get a suckerpunch on a team, you stomp on the throat and suffocate them. Not do a dance like the Rangers did
Jersey is a super young team that really overachieved this season and that's a good thing because this will be a great teaching lesson for them if nothing else. All great championship teams and star players have had to go through the tough times to learn what the playoffs are all about and its a different monster in a 7 game series. Jersey is definitely a skilled and fast team but they will need to add some size and grit to the roster down the road, you just have to have that in some form for the post season. Plus time will also allow those younger guys to grow and mature physically and mentally. Going through this experience will pay off in the end
Canes are essentially just a more experienced and refined version of the Devils
As a Canes fan, it comes down to 2 factors imo:
1. Stick-checking from EVERY Canes player in the lineup - Where NJ had space against the Rangers to operate & get up to speed with the puck, Carolina is invested in bothering the Devils sticks for 200 feet of ice. NJ can't get up to speed if they can't get the space to handle the puck.
2. The Forecheck - On most of the Canes' truly potent possessions, they're getting the puck deep into the Devils' zone & grinding the game to a halt against the boards with good help at the point to prevent breakaways on turnovers. NJ has to operate in a grindy, tiring game at the boards that Carolina is specifically conditioned to thrive at. After 60 minutes of that effort from the Canes, Jersey has been gassed at the end of games.
loved this video - always like learning more about counter strategies
Brother I love your content and I hit subscribe to see more of these videos. I enjoyed your breakdown of the teams and why CAR is so successful this series.
All boils down to Roddy running a tight system. Despite the injuries, this team isn't really about one player, a couple players, or even a specific group, it's about the system. This system happens to work really well against the Devils. I knew when I watched game 7 Rangers/Devils that the Devils were not going to get breakouts like they constantly did against the Canes, the tight defense shuts down the whole offense that the Devils are built around. Whether or not that will translate to continuing to dominate at Prudential or not is yet to be seen, the Devils have a ton of skill and there were some seriously dangerous moments in the first period of game 2 for the Canes that could have changed the tempo for the rest of the game, that being said, I have serious doubts that the Devils will advance past this round, like you said, this is a very different team than the Rangers and it's one that simply matches up better against them. I'm a Canes fan, so obviously I'm pretty biased here, but this has been my take since before the series started, had Rangers won game 7 and we were playing them right now, we'd be seeing a very different series play out.
Agree... the players have bought into a team mentality. Seeing the same with Florida (oddly enough, also with ex-Hurricanes players & coach)... it's making for one EXCITING playoff series!!
Roddy has the players and the system. Even with the injuries I dont see another teams stopping the canes for the cup. If my devils get booted I am pulling for the canes. Just because they wont be so damn hungry next year lol.
Solid analysis. You did not mention how when NJ initially drafted Hischier & Hughes first overall they did so for their direct play on the puck. Hughes thrives as a puck handler, Hischier wins forecheck battles against the boards... We didn't see either of that during this series.
Carolina just doesn't let the other team touch the puck. It's hard to use your speed when you never have posession of the puck.
That was a great breakdown, good job.
Love your videos man never stop
Thank you for supporting!
Makes alot more sense now when you break it down like that. When it went 4 on 4 in Game 2 i was wondering why the Canes were nursing the puck and playing so conservatively to prevent a turnover. I guess the main reason is because they knew theyd get smoked by the Devs speed in 4 on 4. The other reason may just be to frustrate NJ and prevent them from being able to play the game they want to play it and dictate the speed they desired. Wound up working for them because Jordan Staal scored on that half breakwlaway because of it.
Great coverage
Yes, my Devils have been shut down and look like they don't belong in round 2. Yes, this is different than the 0-2 in round one.
Carolina is well coached and works together very well as a team.
This didn't age well
@@djentleman7 A gentleman waits until the series is over before making a leap lime this. Take it down a notch; you'll jinx it.
@@MarcBrown As a fan I'm excited, I'm sorry. Glad and proud to see the boys come out looking like this again!
@djentleman7 It's impossible not to be excited about today's performance.
I'm just waiting for Bratt to get a goal to complete the night.
@Cleon67 let what go? There's nothing happening here. You're really misreading the room.
Canes and Devils both do the 1-2-2 but the Canes are just better at it.
I have a lot of respect for the Canes and their fans. I don't expect a long series with the way they've been playing vs NJ. With the Rangers you could tell the Devils had them beat 5v5 but this Carolina team is an entirely different beast. They watched those Rangers Devils games with the time off, they studied for this test and so far they're acing it.
I'm going to stay hopeful but can't really see that Round 1 magic happening again here -- they might pick up one or two games if they can adjust but this is a deep hole vs Carolina.
Devils fans have been far less obnoxious than Rangers fans. Hope to see the Devils in the playoffs again next year, regardless of what happens this series
@Canadian Sabres Fan Rangers fans are routinely some of the most obnoxious in all of sports. Classless in a classless city.
@Canadian Sabres Fan dude we've been taking shit from the Rangers fans for 11 years as well as during the first two games of that series. Let us enjoy our moment. Even if it's obnoxious, nowhere near as obnoxious as the Rangers fans who expect to win a Cup every other year like they are the Yankees meanwhile they have the Cup success of the NY Jets.
As I canes fan, your team is in my top ten, I love the style of hockey the devils play, I still want the canes to win the series but, I wish the devils good luck in the years to come.
good job on the analysis
As a Devils fan, this is a great video. The first two games seemed almost boring, compared to the Rangers series, because of how much they were able to slow us down. Almost like watching the trap lol..so think a big problem too is the adjustment like you said, they hyper-tuned their game to the rangers after going down 0-2 and now have to unlearn that and tune to the canes.
Really good content here!🎉
Canes dominated center ice game 4 and the devils struggled with passing or even getting out of the defensive zone 😢
another great vid, you must been a coach ,in the NHL ,your breakdowns are wild ,
keep up the great work .there nobody do what you do for the NHL ,not even the NHL,your ten mins vid are more entertaining than a hour of ESPN
This is great analysis.
Great video and explanation. Been a joy to watch this post-season as a Canes fan. But as an aside...those double-periods in the captions are killing me. They're not periods, they're not ellipses...whyyyyyyyyy
(seriously though, great vid!)
I'm out in Vancouver so I don't get to see the Canes play nearly as much as I'd like but they've been managed and coached brilliantly, probably the smartest run organization in the league right now
Gentlemen’s sweep, Florida looks insane but I’m hoping Toronto can at least push a game 6, great breakdown brethren🙏
Great analysis and accurate
All im thinking is LET'S GO CANES
I'm a canes fan but this series is far from over
Series in now 2-1 after a dominating game by the Devils in an 8-4 win. All season the Devils have been the comeback kings. They seem to learn their opponents period by period and game by game. I think they have the adjustment talents to win this series by adapting to the Canes system and capitalizing on their weaknesses, (whatever the very few weaknesses Carolina has). No matter what, this series is gonna go to 6 or 7 games.
If the NJ played the Canes like they did in the first period, it'll be a close match. Game 7 for sure. But if Carolina plays NJ like they did in the 2nd and 3rd, NJ doesn't have a chance. Honestly, with a 60sec 5 on 3 in the 1st, and NJ couldn't score? That just shows you how tough it is to play against the Canes.
It’s cool whenever these two teams face each other, State vs State, they both have the same team colors of red, white and black and the fact that Carolina has never lost a playoff series to New Jersey 2-0 soon to be 3-0
It is not because they are slow. It is Carolina’s defense breaking them down (hence them allowing the second fewest goals in the regular season)
Do you think Luke Hughes can help them? Great skater and puck mover so you would like to think he could help against Carolina’s forecheck. As a Devils fan I sure hope so as I’m most likely going to game 3 tomorrow.
I think it's worth a shot. Ryan Graves and others on the Blue Line for New Jersey looked overwhelmed and slow against the forecheck of Carolina. I think Luke Hughes and his skating ability could help against the forecheck of Carolina.
CAR came into the series with a game plan and executed flawlessly. NJ came into the series with short rest and time to adjust and it showed. Idk if NJ even has a plan B to combat this. One look at their powerplay and you get an immediate idea at how little they tend to adjust.
Just a hunch but the Devs played the same first 2 games they did against NY. Played completely different game 3. Almost seems on purpose and it's working. Been a great series AMF ai expect it to come down to the wire in a 7th game. Both teams are very fast.
Brind’ Amore was great as a player, he’s even better at coaching.
Can Lindy make the necessary adjustments? I think it won't matter. Canes in 5.
A lot of people forget the youth of our team just because we make the playoffs so much and we have experience
Hurricanes / Oilers revenge tour? I'm all for it.
Quest for the cup always start with Defense. Canes structurally are fantastic.
It's cool that new jersey had senator sheev Palpatine as a head coach.
I’m not sure NJ is objectively any faster than CAR. If so, it’s a few %. A marginal speed advantage is hard to hang your hat on as a team in the playoffs. If speed is all they bring to game 3, they won’t be back to Raleigh this year
You're only young once.
Now that the Devils have a taste of pressure; have seen two of the best defenses in the league, and know how to parry they'll be pretty tough in the semi-finals.
Oh...BTW...everybody loves Brindy: a superstar coach and master of physical training of the future.
The game today was pure chaos, clearly an outliner. But we take it and move. Will give us some confidence.
4:07 -- note who's #2. Coincidental pathway between this stat line and the 2 teams having 2-0 series leads in their respective matchups...?? 🤔🤨
As Carolina fan I didn’t think we would get passed the second round because of injuries and scoring depth coming into the playoffs prove me wrong canes
As a Devils fan my hats off to the Canes. They are the better team this year. They have the system and the players. Devils are down 3-1 going back to Carolina but its only a matter of time. I would like to see them win 1 more but if they don't its been a great season for them and a lesson learned against the powerful Canes. I will be rooting for you guys to get a cup once the inevitable happens. You deserve it and I don't see a better team in the way to stop you.
This serie is over!! If you think NJD is beating the Canes 4 out of the next 5 games you're out of your mind.
Where have i heard these exact words ....oh yea last round by cocky rangers fans ..i mean word for word .
This all boils down to one person, Rod the Bod. His system is all about speed and pressuring the puck, no time and space for the other team! We don’t have the all star offensive weapons like other teams especially with all the players we have out, but then again we never really have since he’s taken over as HC and yet we make the playoffs every year. Guys buy into his system and it works. I expect NJ to win 1,2 games but Carolina win the series. They have a very good chance to win the cup with our defense and Goaltending peaking at the right time of year.
As a Carolina fan myself i agree with this video entirely. However the Devil's will be at their home in New Jersey so Carolina will have to keep playing similar to how they have games 1 and 2. I'm hoping rod lights a fire under their butts saying do not comprimise. Because one simple mistake could turn this whole series around.
Been here before just gotta make adjustments if we can successfully do that even if it’s minor win game 1 and all the sudden devils win game 4 and we’re tied
Any of the canes top 3 guys coming back?
All of a sudden everyone loves the trap
Teams as young as the devils don't win Stanley cups. Good playoff experience for their young studs and if they can keep the nucleus together they'll be a cup contender soon
They are done unfortunately, Canes should wrap this series up in 5
That being said NJ will be a very dangerous team for many years to come definitely going to be a handful
The Canes are playing smart playoff hockey, more than can be said about the Leafs.
Lets go canes
Found this on 5/12. Spoiler alert. It was easily over. Great break down. The Devils are young and have a lot of skill. Once they put how to beat this into their arsenal, they’ll be a great team, unfortunately. Let’s go Rangers.
The canes are losing 8-4 rn
ThiS iS diFfeRenT thOugH
Sure was 😂
Carolina has a way of slowing down other teams
Speaks volumes when a team has to go so far down the list and brand themselves "the fastest"
Ironically this same franchise perfected slowing down ANYONE at one time. THE TRAP.
Series doesn’t start till the home team loses
Canes in 6.
I think it’s part of it is our inexperience they just don’t have the idea to shift their game plan
Coming off a game 7 emotional win and series....yea most figured that
a devils fan I believe that New Jersey can come back
Then the canes got swept by the panthers which hurt me as a leafs fan
This aged like a wheel of cheese sitting in the desert sun...
HAHAHAHA Update????
If you only looked at the first 3 games of the Ranger series, you would think the Devils didn't belong in the Playoffs.
Maybe we stop judging the Devils or any team on 3 games?
Who ever wins this, don't forget, we have to deal with Vegas and Seattle.
NJ has been such a weird team to watch this playoffs. The games they win they look like a suffocating defensive team that can turn on a dime and burn you up the ice with the rush.
But when they lose holllllyyyy do they lose. Every game they’ve lost they looked so out of sync. Carless passes, shaky goaltending, turning over the puck in the O-zone or just straight up missing the puck.
It’s crazy that they won the series against the rangers with 2 4-0 shutouts and still ended the series with same amount of goals as the rangers.
We’ll see how they react to this deficit, but the canes notably have a much better and consistent defensive system than the rangers, so I think they might be in some trouble now.
Canes are a step or two above the rangers both in terms of speed and structure. thats why NJ looks slower in round 2.
Only way to stop quick passing is to basically face guard and play physical for the puck but devils aren’t that type of team
Straight up, Canes sweeping this series
Ooofff...
Just as I said the other day, they will be completely fine. 3-0 first period and 5-2 at the end of the second. The Devils weren’t “exposed”, they were just tired and needed to get their feet under them a little, now they look unbeatable.
Lol
Vanecek constant choking in the playoffs does not help. He did the same in Washington.
As a devils fan like I’ve always said you gotta lose to win
Of course, going up 2-0 against the Devils (or any other team for that matter) doesn't guarantee anything. In playoff hockey, there are never any guarantees until you get that fourth win of the series.
Still, as someone who is rooting for Carolina in this series, I would rather see them leading 2-0, than see any other series score that could be possible after just two games.
Elias and parise need to step up. Brodeur needs to start game 3
Game 3: Canes can’t slow down Devils for 8 goals. Sooooo….. I’d be worried in Carolina.
Sooooo do we wanna talk about it?
same way nyr did, physicality
Devils are fast but they are small. Like the Leafs, they do well in the regular season but I don't think current Devils roster can go all the way in the playoffs.
You don’t need to look past Vanecek’s playoff stats to understand why they are losing playoff games. The guy is shitting the bed. Also look at how many power plays the devils had vs how many they had to defend. The refs are giving them no chance.
As a Devils fan, I still have confidence in the guys to come back in the series. They already did it once in these playoffs alone AND game 3 and 4 we're on the road. This time, they are going to NJ. I think they are still learning how to exploit this team and a new system all together from what the Rangers showed in Round 1. The top guys in particular need to get going and I think they'll make some really good adjustments that will get the offense going and get the Devils back in the series. To me, this series is far from over
Carolina plays so much better hockey than the NY Rangers did and it's not even close. Rangers quit after game 3. Go Canes! Brind'amour is a GREAT coach!
5 v 5 the Rangers couldn't generate jack squat, this one feels a bit different
Who looked slow in game 3? 🤔 8-4 win LETS GO!!
What happened???
