#nhl #hockey #vancouvercanucks After being one of the most disastrous teams of the 2022 NHL season, The Vancouver Canucks have completely turned things round under Rick Tocchet.
@camdenreyes5668 Bro, Quinn Hughes is better than Jesus, let HIM into your life. He can skate on water and watching him do it is sweeter than salvation.
@Paul-eb9qj he definitely picked right on petey and hughes, but let's not forget virtanen, juolevi, shinkaruk, (maybe podz? 😅), not to mention the absolute LACK of any other round yielding a player besides demko and maybe hogs. Tampa got Kucherov at the end of the 2nd, point in the 3rd, cirelli in the 3rd, Palat in the 7th etc... these aren't just NHL bodies either like 4th liners, they're main pieces of the puzzle type players. ive been a canucks fan for 18 years and i can say that we are playing the best hockey ive ever seen from this team. Concise and coordinated, keeping themselves responisble, using this seasons amazing beginning to fill the holes in their game rather then just coast to playoffs. Love to see this group finally get rewarded for their talent. Thank you Rick!!
Definitely one of the best teams we've had based on the season so far. The 2011 team is pretty hard to beat, and they also crushed in the second half of the season and all the way up to the finals. We are still not much more than halfway through the season. Lots of games left to play.
We can play "softer" than 2011 because of the rules protecting goalies and hits from behind. This means we can have more speed and less outright bruising grit, although we have guys like Blueger and Joshua, and the majority of our D-core who can bruise and bang, but guys like Garland can draw penalties if the opposition tries some dirty tricks. The Sedins in their prime would thrive in 2024, but that's behind us. What matters is now. We have chance. A shot. Lindholm on this team would put us solid in contention. Without another solid 2-way piece, we still have a shot, but it's not as likely.
@@johanstinsonTwo things that this supposed PDO luck mantra doesn't take into account: 1) With a better structure, the Canucks push more of the opponents shots to the perimeter. Less dangerous shots on net equals a higher save percentage for the goalie. That's not luck. That's strategy. 2) Shooting percentage. If the Canucks are able to take more shots from higher danger areas, they will score more goals. They can take more shots from higher danger areas because of their fluid attack and defensemen like Hughes and Hronek that can join the rush and move down low creating chaos with the other teams defensive structure. That's strategy, not luck. ---- So, this tired mantra by those hoping for the Canucks to regress, because they say the PDO is unsustainable, is flawed. PDO is not entirely a 'luck measurement'. It's possible to increase your save percentage and shooting percentage with strategy... and if you maintain those strategies, you maintain a high PDO.
a big reason for the canucks consistently high shooting percentage is because of their shot selection. the canucks won’t just throw the puck on the net for the sake of upping the shot count, they will wait for a screen to develop or almost always try and find the cross crease tip. they rank 7th in the league for high danger shots for and 10th last for low danger shots for. come playoff time though, they’ll need to start shooting more because they won’t have the time to make perfect plays and sometimes low danger shots are the ones that bounce in and win hockey games
i know this comment is 3 months ago and still to this day canucks fan want them to shoot the puck so much but its good they stick to their game and hold that puck and then what seems to be their most popular option by far is to have hughes make space miller gets the puck in a dangerous spot and you have 2 players at the front of the net ready to screen and tip the puck at needed and majority of the time that scorer is the brockstar
8:00 that is a crazy stat that shouldn’t be overlooked. Another fun stat is that the Canucks are around 27-0-1 when leading after the 2nd period. So basically you can turn off the TV set if the 2nd period ends and the Nucks are up.
It's always assumed that a higher than standard shooting percentage is a sign of "luck" that will eventually disappear, but perhaps part of that higher percentage comes from an offensive system that produces more shots from higher percentage shooting areas. If your offense is generating most of their chances from the area right in front of the net from where most goals are scored, they will naturally have a higher shooting percentage than a team that generates most of their chances from the outside. This is what it looks like Vancouver is doing.
And on the defensive side, they are so good at recovering pucks in dangerous areas, and keeping the pressure from the perimeter, so they don't have very many dangerous shots against per game. Factor in the Demko and DeSmith of it all when those dangerous shots do get through, and that's a very solid defensive structure.

Realistically Canucks had large stretches of dominance in the last 2 years, it's just that they either were hurt or started the season really badly, similar to the Oilers this season but the hole was too big for them to climb out of like the Oilers are doing now
Canucks do this really frustrating thing of being REALLY good in the last 20 games or so. Never enough for clawing back into the playoffs but just enough to give up on some picks in the draft.
I love when you make videos like this. I've recently rekindled my interest for hockey and your deep analysis of the teams and how they play helps me get more out of watching hockey games. I meant to ask you: I'm in Montreal so naturally I follow the Canadiens a lot. They're not doing so well right now, despite going all the way to the Stanley Cup final in 2021. I keep reading in the media how the team is rebuilding, but I'm not too sure what it means. I'd love to watch a video where you analyse what's working for them and what isn't, what areas of their play/strategy they should work, and what you think their roadmap should look like. I'll keep watching your videos! They're always fascinating!
They are now. The last 16 games cemented it, that long eastern road trip where they looked like the globetrotters cemented it when the east coasters could watch in their time zone haha
Best time to be a Canucks fan since 2011. This team has lots of heart and they are fully committed to Tocchet's system. They are remaining humble, and taking it one game at a time, not getting ahead of themselves. Exactly the kind of mentality that you need to have.. and it will take them far!
My favourite hockey CZcamsr! Absolutely love all your videos. Question - do you have a background in playing or coaching high level hockey? You're very knowledgeable
I've always said the last couple years when everyone was saying rebuild. Why rebuild with top 5 goalie, top 5 center, top 5 defenceman? Just need to build around 3 studs, time is short in the cap era.
As an exhausted and disheartened Penguins fan, I’m on the train for the Canucks to win it all. What a rad story this would be. Such an exciting team to watch.
I am actually a Toronto fan, but there is like almost no chance they do anything. I am just happy the Canucks and Jets are popping off for canada.@@colnando
I still have Rick Tocchet's hockey card from 92' in his Penguins uniform. He was one of the first hockey card I got as a kid. The Penguins were really the kind of team that many kids looked up to because of their physicality, the reflexes, speed and strength up until we acquired Bure. Him, Lemieux and Jagr were the most formidable team in NHL history. When they announced this decision, his name brought back nostalgia so I kinda laughed at this whole controversy because for some reason I thought this could be a good luck card.
Being born in 2004, I dont remember much from the 2011 SCF run since I was 6 years old. This 2023-24 team is gonna be the team I remember and tell my kids, you just needed to watch these guys play. I wish I wasnt so far away from Rogers Arena, I would love to see this team playing live.
Any chance you could do a deep dive or analysis of why, despite all expectations, the Sabres (and I guess the Senators too) have had yet another lackluster season (and maybe why there is hope)?
its anoying to me cause ive always sine 2017 been a vegas fan followed by a canuks fan but now whenever someone asks my favorite team they just call me a wagon.
Never been a huge Canucks fan, but I can't, but admire what they've done this season, and I know my team barely has first round exit aspiration for this season so I might aswell root for you guys to go deep. I just wish Nashville had this level of cohesion and tenacity that the Nucks posses.
Oiler fan here. As good as they have been these past 14 games and as good as Skinner has played, Demko is looking at a possible Vezina nomination. Nucks come out of the west if the playoffs started right now.😢
As a Canucks fan, I've been rooting for the Oilers the past 2 years when the Canucks were out of it but now that Vancity might just have playoff hockey again, watching the Oilers go on that insane heater of a 14 game win streak, I am terrified of McDraisatl right now. They really do seem like a team possessed and hungry to build on their "cup or bust" statement at the beginning of the year after having the atrocious Vancouver start of 2022-23 to start this year.
And it’s not even McDrai putting up all the points right now. Edmonton has finally built an actual team with…and I can’t believe I’m saying this…depth. Can’t ignore western Canadian teams this year. All of them tearing it up. Oilers going for 16wins after tonight’s win. If they break that 17-game record, sky is the limit. Even if they don’t, it still is. But western conference won’t be a cake walk.
I’m happy the Canucks and Oilers are doing so good right now. I’m a jets fan and with 3 of our most important players being injured, I think we’re going to take a dip until we’re all healthy again, so I hope the Oilers and Canucks can keep it up
Gotta be honest I was done with the Canucks after the horvat trade and the Boudreau situation. I was saying tear it down sell the team full rebuilt but I’m happy to admit I was wrong.
I must say that I am impressed with Rick Tocchet and how he has handled the situation with transitioning in as head coach as well as how the team seems to have a new lease. It was sad for Bruce and he deserves a ton of respect for being so classy in such an awful situation. I felt so bad for him and it really hurt my heart to see him break down in his interview afterwards. It was just so disrespectful and completely embarrassing for the franchise as well as the NHL. I love how the Canucks are playing and Quinn Hughes is finally being seen more as an individual than being compared to his brothers and he’s just so impressive out there!!!
This isn't new. It happens all the time. One season is a write-off & the next session, they're a contender to win the cup. Unless you're a Leafs fan like me & then it's just season after season of disappointments 😢
This team has needed actual coaching for some time. Having tochette, gonchar, and Foote constantly on the ice and really coaching this team the all the minor details they have been lacking in the past has made all the difference
I'm not 100% familiar with advanced stats but I've seen discussions about the Canucks PDO being unsustainable (to whatever extent that critiques them) and I am opening to hearing from others if that's valid.
The issue with PDO is that it assumes all shots and goalies are equal. Canucks have one of the best goalies in the league in Demko and superstar finishing talent. On top of that, they have a RIDICULOUS goal differential so even if there PDO regressed, they would still win the vast majority of their games
Glad to see such a young team finding their grove, but like we've learned every year in the NHL. The regular season doesn't matter, Canucks will get blown up as soon as the playoffs start. Systems like theirs don't work when you play the same team 7 times in a row. High flying offenses also don't win cups, look at the Devil's & Leafs last year. As soon as they hit physical grinding teams like the Canes & Panthers they melted. Same thing happens to the Oilers every year.
I don’t know what you’re talking about. They play an amazing full-team defensive system on top of their 1st overall offence, and have a top 3 goalie in the league. Sure they could lose in the playoffs, anyone can, but I would bet on them to make a deep run with their team top to bottom
@@scottkayley9606 Except they don't and the advanced stats prove that. Defensively their a middle of the road team, their ranked 15th in xGoal For/Against, 22nd in take aways , 25th in blocked shots, 28th in hits, and 13th in PK%. They are winning such a high percentage of games because their offense in on an absolute tear. HP even mentions this, their shooting percentage is almost 14%. That is an unreal percentage, for perspective the top 3 teams in the power rankings (Oilers, Panthers & Canes) are shooting about 10%. With an average of 30 shots a game, that's extra .9 goals for a game. Go look at the stats from the previous 2-3 playoffs, shooting percentages tank to around 7-8% in the postseason. What happens to a team with an very average defense when their 14% shooting percentage drops 4-7% while playing against top defensive teams in the playoffs? We've seen what happens they get absolutely pick apart over a 7 games.
The 'nucks are by FAR the biggest surprise of the year. Second is EDM's historic run!!! Canada finally has some good teams, eyyyy?? WPG is fire too. I was gonna mention Toronto but.... no. Just no 😅
Since they're CLEARLY the biggest surprise, they're the most likely to choke. I'd still put Edmonton and Winnipeg in the cup conversation above the Nucks...but once those two teams are out, I'm all in on Vancouver getting their first EVER cup.
Not only are they first in goals for, they are top 3 in goals against. And it seems like Bo Horvat was the cancer, because their fortunes 180'd once he was gone...

@@JelzSmellzah yes, the Canucks specialty
@@JelzSmellzimagine the Canucks are really good in the last 20 games of this season
Well done on this breakdown. Love this team and the way they are playing. Tocchet is an awesome coach and Canuck fans are stoked!!!!!
Every one of your videos are amazing. Great editing, coverage, explanation ... Etc
Amazing what the right coach can do if players buy into the system. Their turnaround from a year ago is crazy.
Really great article I really enjoyed the breakdown you provided great job!
The Canucks are contenders. But the league does not recognize it yet. Let the Canucks be the "underdogs" come April. Either way they are fun to watch.
They are now. The last 16 games cemented it, that long eastern road trip where they looked like the globetrotters cemented it when the east coasters could watch in their time zone haha
"Bruce there it is!" I love that.
Best hockey breakdown channel on CZcams, keep it up!
Best time to be a Canucks fan since 2011. This team has lots of heart and they are fully committed to Tocchet's system. They are remaining humble, and taking it one game at a time, not getting ahead of themselves. Exactly the kind of mentality that you need to have.. and it will take them far!
‘I keep my eyes wide open all the time’ probably Hughes as he walks the line 😆
GO CANUCKS GO!!!
Great video!!
I got a Hughes flying sk8 pro stick jersey this year for a reason, because he’s a great captain and deserves it!
Great, insightful video bro
Dude! An nhl team should hire you as a video coach. Great analysis
Incredible breakdown as always
This is my favorite hockey channel by far!
As an exhausted and disheartened Penguins fan, I’m on the train for the Canucks to win it all. What a rad story this would be. Such an exciting team to watch.
This is Canadas year. Canucks, Jets, Oilers. Love to see the Canadian teams going strong!
Western Canada *
All the other Canadian teams are struggling to even score.
Either way, Canada is doing well.@@Simone-uu8ne
Love how you didn't mention TO... W for that my friend LOL ;)
The best thing is that I can finally look forward to watching a Canucks game after work again!
The Senators have made exactly the same change to their game under Jacques Martin. I think they're about to make the same turn around
Love Saros. That guy is great.
Disaster doesn't need to be in scare quotes. They were a disaster.
well done great break down
could you do a vid abt the best teams defenses and why they don’t break down
No way in hell Hughes doesn’t win the Norris this year.
Oiler fan here. As good as they have been these past 14 games and as good as Skinner has played, Demko is looking at a possible Vezina nomination. Nucks come out of the west if the playoffs started right now.😢
Oilers are terrifying right now. If playoffs started tomorrow as a Canucks fan I would be beyond scared
I’m a jets fan and with 3 of our most important players being injured, I think we’re going to take a dip until we’re all healthy again, so I hope the Oilers and Canucks can keep it up
I’m a redwings fan but I’m seriously hoping for a 2011 rematch.
Next week can you please make one on the oilers. Or at least when they lose their streak can you make a video on it?
I'm curious to how Hughes is going to make out in the playoffs when bodies start flying around.
Great vid!!
Man it feels good to be a Canucks fan right now
So excited to have Vancouver playoff hockey soon ❤
Gotta be honest I was done with the Canucks after the horvat trade and the Boudreau situation. I was saying tear it down sell the team full rebuilt but I’m happy to admit I was wrong.
Another perfect video, keep it up
This is the best hockey channel bar nonw
Having played both, and seeing it broken down, it looks kinda like a field lacrosse offense... genius
Freakin love this channel
I don't know much about schemes in hockey. But that scissor play reminds me of a high pick and roll in basketball
This isn't new. It happens all the time. One season is a write-off & the next session, they're a contender to win the cup. Unless you're a Leafs fan like me & then it's just season after season of disappointments 😢
This is the year. The year a Canadian team will win the cup!
😂
This team has needed actual coaching for some time. Having tochette, gonchar, and Foote constantly on the ice and really coaching this team the all the minor details they have been lacking in the past has made all the difference
Hughes has shades of Gretzky, dipsy-doodling around other players who look like they have Christmas hams strapped to their feet.
@@scottkayley9606 much appreciated!
Great analysis. Living in Vancouver, I just hope the city doesn’t implode from either another Canucks finals loss or first ever Stanley Cup win:)
Yeah it's just a bunch of millionaires shoving pucks around the ice. It's not that big a deal if they lose lol.
Great content my guy. Take the sub!
I was gonna mention Toronto but.... no. Just no 😅
What about Blugers line. All lines are powerhouses
I love these videos. Will you do one to explain why CBJ is so bad?
Great video explaining things! I'm subscribing if you make all your videos as good as this!
Hard not to see Tocchet winning the the Jack Adams this year.
What was the odds when betting pre-season on this team to make finals?
1st in goals scored but 28th in shots on net. Sniper city
"Patience is mother of all virtues." From Québec, they're exciting as hell.
Too much poogie now that they were at home for a week. Weakens the legs . . . . LOL!!!
This is a great analysis. Not a Nucks fan, but hey, they're Canadian, so I like em more than many.
And NO one in the NHL will hit with intent to injure because they know the Canucks will retaliate with zero thought of taking an instigator penalty.
