This CEO Made AMD Billions - Now She Wants To Dominate The Market With AI

- From a conference room atop AMD’s headquarters in Santa Clara, California, a stretch of highway 101 running outside, Lisa Su presides over a company older than the term "Silicon Valley." Down the road is a link to the company’s past, an old foundry in Sunnyvale where AMD used to press its chips. But from her window she can see a recent milestone in the company’s fast-evolving present: the offices of arch-nemesis Intel, whose market capitalization ($120.3 billion) AMD’s now eclipses ($153.5 billion).
It wasn’t always this way. In 2014, when Su, now 53, took up the CEO reins at AMD (Advanced Micro Devices), the chipmaker was foundering. The company had laid off around a quarter of its staff and its share price hovered around $2. Patrick Moorhead, a former AMD exec, remembers it as “deader than dead.” Then Intel began to stumble, dragged down by manufacturing delays and Apple’s decision not to use its chips in iPhones. Nimble, with a tactician’s eye, Su was able to capitalize on her rival’s missteps, inking deals with laptop makers such as Lenovo and gaming giant Sony, plus Google and Amazon, whose massive data centers generated $6 billion of the chipmaker’s sales last year.
At $63 billion, Intel’s annual revenue still dwarfs AMD’s $23.6 billion. But wresting away coveted server chip market share from its Silicon Valley neighbor, as well as scooping up the semiconductor company Xilinx, has spiked AMD’s stock nearly 30-fold in the nine years since Su took over. Now, with the mainstreaming of artificial intelligence stoking demand for the silicon brains behind machine learning, she’s facing a legacy-defining opportunity and a daunting challenge: Can AMD produce a chip powerful enough to break Nvidia’s near-monopoly on the processors that undergird the coming wave of generative AI technology? “If you look out five years,” she says, “you will see AI in every single product at AMD, and it will be the largest growth driver.”
Su has been overclocking AMD for the last nine years, much like a gamer who pushes a processor to perform beyond its manufacturer-specified limits. Unlike many tech executives, she’s a world-class researcher, with a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from MIT. Her unique combination of technical genius, people skills and business savvy has made her among the highest-paid S&P 500 CEOs for the last several years (total 2022 compensation: $30.2 million). Overall, she has amassed a $740 million fortune (largely in AMD stock), landing her in 34th place on our annual ranking of America’s richest businesswomen. “Talk about leaning in and just killing it,” marvels Panos Panay, Microsoft’s chief product officer, who first met Su in 2014 as she began AMD’s turnaround.

I love how humble she is. She's always about what she still wants to get done in her career, not bragging about all that she's already done, which is already a lot.
it's asian culture
@@khoirulanam9141 basically talk less, do more..
@@niks660097And compete with Nvidia to be greedier.
@@fugitive6549there related, huang and su are related
The I thought bragging about it on Forbes would have been bragging.
She exudes so much passion, intelligence and raw curiosity that it’s no wonder that she’s at the head. May AMD continue to grow under her leadership.
Su and huang are related….😂
One of Lisa Su's strength is her ability to intensely focus on what strengths AMD has and iterate on that ruthlessly, to build up an unassailable position of strength, while keeping other less leading aspects still warm. Now that she has placed in motion the unstoppable steamroller that is AMD's CPUs, I believe the next 5 years she's going to do the same with Radeon's CDNA. Oh RDNA won't be abandoned; any breakthrough in CDNA that's applicable to RDNA will definitely make it to RDNA, but her sights are squarely to launch a challenge to Nvidia's current lead in AI-oriented GPGPUs.
Lisa Su is my hero.
Good to see an engineer run a tech company.
I remember buying 400 shares of AMD in 2018 as my first investment ever in the stock market. I bought in @ $9 and sold at $13😂(rookie mistake, I guess). After witnessing today’s price, I respect everything Lisa has done and happy for anyone who rode this up from single to triple digits 📈
She saved AMD ... Thank you Lisa
Passion for the PC Industry is what make her shine brighter in the industry, she's keen on what consumers really need and what to expect, she seems to be on the top of her league all the time, AMD is very fortunate with her leadership.
What a cool CEO.
Su is amazing.,Prior to her AMD had a horrific CEOs back at the turn of the century. Doesn't suprise me she was formerly an IBMer👍
but boys r better than girls tho
AMDs stock turnaround is truly legendary, it used to be a dumpster fire due for bankruptcy but she really did it!!!
Good for her! 👍👍
Nothing but respect for her.
I can listen to her all day. Lisa delivers message in a very comfortable way and there is very subtle confidence behind.
I met her once...well I say met...I was at her key note at a tech conference and afterwards I was waiting to use the bathroom bc it was occupied
Lisa walked out of the bathroom and I was like "hey you're..." but she just marched right by like I wasn't even there.
I had to pee to bad to follow so I rushed into the bathroom to try and get my business done and then try and meet her.
But when I went into the bathroom someone had taken the most fowl dump I ever encountered in my life.
I don't mean like they didn't flush...but the smell was absolutely horrid, I swear my nose had nerve damage for like a few hours afterward.
IDK...might not have been her that did the deed...could have been the person before...but if it was her I think she might have intestinal issues or like diet issues or something.
Anyway...tried to track her down as soon I tinkled...but she was gone...didn't see her again before I left later.
One of the best CEO's ever and she did not go to an ivy league business school. Think about that.
Bruh she did BS MS PhD from MIT
@@MrSaggy96 not an ivy still
CONGRATULATIONS, Lisa!!! So proud of you!!! Keep going !!
She's been a great CEO, super inspiring.
Lisa Su CEO of AMD your Resume is something that inspires me! She loves to solve problems and believe that engineering can always solve a problem.
What is fascinating about your career is your historic. She is Taiwanese Immigrant and she saved AMD from the dead and making it one of the most important chip companies in the Industry.
I would to invite her to make an Online Meeting with some students? I hope you accept this invitation!
My sincere greetings to her! Liu Su
Jensen Huang and Lisa Su are passionate leaders in the semi conductor industry working around the clock to bring the best. I admire both the tycoons.
How awesome is it that the CEO of a Chip company is an engineers and understands the ins and outs of how a processor is made.
She is amazing i always felt from her, that she is always willing to choose the more difficult path to do the things right, if its needed. Do it right , metters the most, Do it the right metters more than do it a first, otherwise its not done anyway. Scientist in bussiness instead of bussinessman in science. Phenomenal person.
Another product of a hustling and bustling competitive Nyc!
Simply phenomenal
Amd tech is phenomenal, i love to see how the RDNA tech has boosted gaming into the stratosphere. Lisa is doing a great job.
I just love her! She's the best CEO in my humble opinion.
She is inspirational for younger gen.
Getting the Console gaming business was critical to getting AMD back. The Zen Architecture was probably a direct result of investment from Microsoft and Sony for the Xbox and PlayStation. After the Zen Architecture was the chiplet design which with the help of consistent manufacturing from TSMC made them catch up to Intel. AMD on TSMC 7nm was a game changer as Intel was stuck in 14nm for far too long.
Well, Zen was already in design separately from console CPUs. The reason why Sony and Microsoft invested in AMD was because AMD was willing to do custom chip designs for them, unlike other CPU makers who tend to have a "take it or leave it" mentality. This had led to Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 to each have their breakthrough tech.
The money from Microsoft and Sony not only helped keeping AMD afloat, there's enough to also do some focused R&D. Which Dr. Su had wisely directed into the unstoppable juggernaut that is the Zen lineup.
@@PanduPoluan AMD won design wins from both the PlayStation 4(2013) and Xbox One(2013) which both used AMD's Jaguar CPUs. This revenue was critical for AMD to secure advanced process node manufacturing from TSMC and fund R&D. Secondly the specs from the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 gaming consoles moving forward were becoming very similar to a PC, which was a huge advantage for AMD since only one architecture (e.g Zen) that could scale across Gaming Consoles, PCs and Servers was needed.
I believe Lisa Su was critical in securing the Gaming console business from both Sony and Microsoft as Senior VP at AMD from 2012.
Here is to hoping she brings more success to AMD, which will benefit the consumers
I appreciate Dr. Lisa and Forbes for this piece. My only criticism is that I hope AMD pushes out more marketing campaigns featuring her in order to establish her as a more recognized household name among her peers.
I noticed that she deferred the business and personnel restructuring comments to another gentleman and solely focused on the tech. It would have been insightful to hear from her how she took on the failing company culture and turned it around. Including that would have gave her a more rounded representation of a CEO and not as a CTO.
just hearing my CEO would be an engineer is uplifting to me (if I am in AMD). it meant that our thought process is "solving problem" tree guide.
Thanks for the inspired story
Only female CEO in top high-tech companies. Respect!
🌟🔧 At AMD, we're all about building outstanding products, nurturing strong customer relations, and streamlining our company. 💪💼 Lisa Su embodies the perfect blend of technical expertise and exceptional people skills, making her a true standout in the industry. 🚀❤
Loved the video and working for AMD!
you working in CPU team or GPU team?
@@vorkzen4767 Both!
I did try to get into AMD after getting to inspired by her passion, determination and zeal that Lisa brought to the system and not just revived but accelerated the entire AMD products but wasn't successful though.
Now, I am in Jensen Huang's territory which is carries the same pace and its a Great Place of Great People.
Both these Taiwanese are passion driven and they inducing the same into their Team members. Admire them both.
Lisa Su is a national hero
Bought my first AMD processor recently and it wasn't purchased on price but on performance.
Lisa is humble and smart. He has this old Japanese Sensei vibe around him. Great guy.
She's really impressive 😮❤ I love her 😍
Lisa, Mark and Raja really turned AMD around (In that order).
The issue with breaking into AI is that Nvidia has spent years investing in CUDA, especially at the university level.
Its hard to be a significant player when for the last decade or so, all the graduates coming into the market are familiar with only one option, and that option is made by your competitor.
I'm sure Dr Sue will do a great job even with this uphill battle, because if im not mistaken AMD was trading at about $2 when she took over.
This will be an up hill climb for AMD. Nvidia has a huge lead in all major AI developer libraries and AMD needs to win there first and be cheaper to make them want to try and use AMD.
ROCm is rapidly breaking down CUDA's walls.
I have been a fan of amd from the bulldozer days , it so nice to see how they are dominating the market now.
"Hey look buddy, I'm an engineer. That means I solve problems." - Lisa Su 🤝 The Engineer from TF2
Both Lisa and Jensen are from the same city in Taiwan, that's pretty neat. She really turned AMD around.
they're related actually, distant relatives 😅
An example of a truly capable leader and visionary.
AMD processors are the best for cryptocurrency mining Raptoreum (RTM) because of the L3 Cache. ❤
Little behind NVIDIA, hopefully they can be competitive in AI though
She is my engineering hero.
Semi conductors are like train conductors but for trucks and you need them to make engine ears so the trucks can hear animals crossing the road... Got it! Thanks Lisa
I definitely missed out on that zen cpu with her signature on it.
비행기 나오고 다음 장면 부터는 하얀 화면만 보이는데 정상인가요?
I like her. I have been following her speeches since AMD shares were 9 dollars.
Lisa needs to turn amd into Ai company she must make amd beat Nvidia in Ai training. Amd must start to make arm chip too
@@daedalduo exactly Jensen recently told that their company stock had 0 growth for a decade due to their extreme focus on cuda and development of other software accelerators. Now it’s their main advantage over everyone else you gotta see the future
In house training or direct Ed through Community college semester programs. Austin, you can DO this!
She's like the embodiment of the American Dream, proof that it's still a possible reality!
But above all, my liquid cooled AMD is a shotgun blast and the latest generations of platforms and graphic cards are phenomenal! In the field of "small" computers, those for mere mortals, which are the only planets I know a little bit, in an AMD galaxy far beyond my understanding, the architecture introduced in the 7000 graphic cards is a very important challenge that will severely determine the future of the sector, and deserves much more media attention, but the complexity is great and this does not always help easy communication. However, the transformation in continuity of the RDNA series, from 1 to 3, is both a frontier and a safe place in method and substance, and it's really interesting.
In small processors, the two channels, some, like me, struggle to understand the meaning of the new heat sinks, even if with a liquid 5950x I'm certainly not in emergency! It is precisely a cultural interest, despite the growth in performance is there and it is possible for customers to have a wider choice in every sense. From the 3950x to the 5950x the reduction of ccds number and the consequent loss of scalability was balanced with renowned computing power and energy management, while simulators and more demanding applications seem to have benefited from the 8 core ccds, and the 5950x was just the crown on a legendary platform, a processor of superior class in multitask and multithread, capable of competing with workstations like never before, in the same time improved even in videogames, elastic and versatile like never before, with temperature management from heaven on earth.
AM5 is a huge technological leap with transfer speeds doubled once again, and keeping temperatures down could not be a topic. While the companies that deal with PC cooling are moving too slowly (something expressly for ddr5 Rams does not yet exist, and there are still products on the showcase whose physical compatibility with ddr4 is still uncertain! The heatsinks do not fit!), it seems that the processor registers and the cache memory are the other node of the dispute: some applications would like less, others more, and bringing all the needs together in a single processor is not easy: who knows; maybe in the near future the artificial intelligence could do something about!
The most interesting thing is to think that my computer GPU right now is an AMD chip processing this video.
I’m almost positive I may have met her but not 100%. Was a marketing manager at a Gaming show in Montreal in 2017/18s and met a lady from AMD who looked just like her. Didn’t know who she was at the time.
Jensen and Su are among the best CEOs of the world along with Musk.
they're cousins
BTW Nvidia Ceo Jenseng Huang is her cousin, that makes nvidia and amd kinda like a monopoly.
Without AMD intel would have had absolute monopoly and they were already price gouging customers with lower tech and higher prices since 2008 until 2015 when AMD made a comeback. That Intel used unethical methods of bribing OEM's to crush AMD seems to be forgotten. Intel needs to be punished for anti-competitive behavior. We already have Big Tech monopolies and we don't want another one in hardware which will make Personal computers expensive.
amd is in good hands with her
she made MY CPU Super fast
AI wasn't even mentioned once in the whole video. Good job Forbes making clickbait 👍

amazing ceo
HOW IS THIS ONLY 720p!?
Dr. Su not just saved AMD and made it a major player in the industry, both PlayStation and XBox have AMD chips, Steadeck and competitor handhelds use AMD, EPYC server CPUs are excellent, she pushed the industry itself. If not for her, we would still have 4 core, low IPC chips and who knows what would be the specs of consoles and prices and efficiency of server farms.
Beautiful and hamble
Lisa Su very cool indeed
Mama Su vs Papa Huang is turning is the El Clasico of semiconductors. 😁
I am fan of her
What would be wonderful would be if you hurry up and announce the freaking 7800XT and 7700XT to see if it is worth the wait or not....
when you have ceo's who are actually engineer the company flourishes like how amd and NVIDIA is doing now..
That doesn't explain Intel's poor performance! :D
Thank you AMD.
