Dr. Lisa Su is an inspiration and a great example of what happens when you have a brilliant engineer with a good head on their shoulders running a tech company.
The previous guy put together a survival strategy, when Lisa talked about lead times the Ryzen architecture was already being designed in 2012. It's a very long term business.
Unlike most tech companies, AMD has a sense of purpose at this point. And purpose in engineering comes through engineering leadership. Not through business leadership
Not sure if AMD is a good example for this point of view. AMD's road into near bankruptcy was led by D.Meyer, an engineer and CPU architect, father of great Athlon and terrible Bulldozer. After firing him, AMD's revival came through a 'business leader' CEO Rory Read, which reoriented the business, and started the Zen project, success of which is now making AMD seem so successful.
Exactly! A good engineer can think all the way down to transistor levels and work their way up to the instruction set architecture. This is something that’s not easy for an MBA.
"We need to find people who like to do this work...and its not everybody" - Beautifully said. Harder problems need passionate people to solve the problems. Love this series! Love Lisa Su!
I am an AMD stock investor since 2016, with an average price ~$15, been holding for almost 6 years now, never never regret to stay invested with them, the only regret is not putting more
@@mVic8 Right? I mean think about it, any accomplished engineer CEO is probably skilled enough to learn the job quickly and adapt to the new environment, plus they could use their experience in people from being a CEO to build their political team, no? It looks to me like the perfect choice and also, why don't they try themselves? It's only a 4 year experiment & it may kickstart engineers in other countries to run for office
This interview showcases perfectly the difference in immediate short term thinking and long term strategy. Notice how the interviewers keep asking things like: "When will the chip shortage finish?" "Are we going to beat or be beaten by China" "Do you think you will defeat Intel?" etc. etc. etc. Now notice How Ms Su keep answering for those same questions: " It is a gradual process..." "We must balance and build a framework for intellectual property safeguarding or sharing..." "Each of us have a strategy, we must think what we want to do for the world..." They seem disconnected for the short term viewer, but Ms. Su is being very direct in answering those questions. She is just thinking in terms of perpetuating a business for as long as possible instead of beating someone today.
Me too but i don't think she will she said it herself she expects the competition to be strong and to deal with that they'll have to run faster and thats it. I can actually feel in her words that she does what she does to deliver the best she can to the world so yeah she's got good motivation there
i don't think intel will be some strong competitor in following 3 years, you know, They just recently realize what a tech company should do, it is a little late, cause tech cost time. As long as a company focus on the stupid diversity and women right, which means it will fall down sooner or later. If intel doen't cheat, for example use some under table way to stop Amd buy xlinyx there is no way intel can catch up in sort term. Long term, let's see what the new ceo of Intel can bring the company.
I don't know why Kara is so overrated, even without a cough she often interrupts and just throws random crap in there. Seemed to mostly come into fame from the Mossberg Steve Jobs and BIll Gates interview.
2022 here i think AMD is going to crush the competition . it was a bit slow but they have delivered better and better products under her leadership. engineers for the win, duck those finance CEOs that give a company short term benefits for long time ruin. what a vision she has
that interviewer lady, I don't know who she is and I get a sense she is all about herself even though she is interviewing Lisa. Also she sounds like she caught something recently....

She pries a bit and sometimes talks over guests, but other than that I find her persona likable and very smart. Her writing is also excellent. There isn't anyone even remotely close to her on the scene, quite frankly.
Good interviewer for social media companies in public eyes with Silicon Valley attitude- not so great when it comes to old silicon valley hardcore engineering semi companies such as AMD or hardware companies
@@vintage0x Not speaking from a huge breadth of experience here, but just coming from Elon Musk's interview she asked him questions that were completely pointless, like whether he was jealous that Bezos and Branson went to space before he did, or whether he thought it was a good thing that he moves Bitcoin with his tweets. Elon has a lot of interesting ideas and I would've liked to hear more about them instead. I admit I do like her humor, and she creates a comfortable dialogue with her guests, but she needs to ask better questions.

I'm wondering why they had a lady with a cold interviewing somebody as prestigious as Lisa Su. I think a one-on-one with the guy on the left would've been excellent.
Let's be practical, these are sharp questions Lisa won't be honest on, and you only get compliments and flattery with the guy on the left, waste of stage time anyway.
The lady in the middle needs to tone her politics down a bit, if she wants to know how woman can be successful in a male-dominated field she has the best example sitting right in front of her. Instead of pestering her, she should learn from her. Completely distracting.
Exactly, that women whatever her name is, this is Lisa Su in front of you, the best female leader in the tech world (yes, not one of, it is The best, arguement not acceptable). She kept on drag Lisa into her politics PR "traps", come on, if Lisa Su fell for that, she won't be at the position as she is now! and this women is and will still be a 3rd class interviewer!

Taiwan’s loss but Dr. Su is really a product of the US as she came from Taiwan at the age of 2.
