  • Come along for the ride as Mike and Scott stop in Taunton, Massachusetts, the home of TWS Motors (Formerly The Wedge Shop). Its founder, Woody Cooper was gracious enough to talk all things Triumph, TR7 and TR8, and Rovers. He truly is the world's leading expert on the matter. We talk about the history of TR7/TR8, upgrading a TR7 with V8, what TWS does to their Wedge’s, and Woodys private collection including Bad 7 and Bad 8 which is potentially the fastest street TR8 in existence. This marks Episode 1 in a new series called Garage Talk where we take you behind the scenes at some of the most interesting businesses and car collections in the industry. Thanks for joining us on Joy Riding.

I spent a few bucks there getting a TR8 back in shape. :) Nice to see the facility and here Woody's expertise on these cars and engines.

After more than a decade of talking to Woody (and more to come) I can now put a face to the voice. Great video, I sent it out to my TR friends.

I almost wet my pants. I've been a TR8 fan from day one having owned an 1980 Aztec Gold convertible from brand new with 8 miles on the odometer and it was seriously one of the best cars I've ever owned . You just have to drive one to experience how really good they are. These cars were very polarizing and controversial and ignored forever until I stumbled across the TWS website so many years ago. Now TR8s are coming out of the woodwork and the values are climbing. Woody's right - these are driver's cars, meant to be enjoyed and driven. And 400hp in a roadster that barely weighs 2500 lbs? Dear God in heaven! I would have a 1980 convertible, black on black on black on black with the European bumper kit body colored and black wheels and the original TR8 graphics just barely legible on the paintjob, full engine kit, brake kit, suspension and posi rear end - the works. With AC and a killer stereo. Thanks TWS for keeping the dream alive!

Great vid! Proud owner of a stock 2-liter, '77 TR7 FHC 5-speed here. But if I ever wanted more power, I would definitely be going here ! I like the lightweight Rover V8 engine. Triumph was just too late to offer it, as it was the beginning of the end. But it's a great upgrade to a 4 cyl TR7, with many performance levels to choose from, as he explained.
I do honestly like the OHC, slant 4-cylinder engine in the TR7. It's unique and quirky, just like the car itself. It's a good fit for a 2300 pound car. Sure it has some "interesting" design aspects, and hardly a speed demon, but it revs up so freely, returns over 30 miles to the gallon, on the highway, and is easy to maintain.
The thing with me is, I already own classic cars with V8s. So the slant 4 is a new experience for me. So I'm going to try to keep it spinning as long as I can.
I did enjoy the two pulls in the video. Sounded nice too !

One more thing, one of the first things I noticed when I bought my TR7 around 5 years or so ago, is how well it handled. Having a low center of gravity, and the tires pushed out to the 4 corners, it can take turns like none of my other cars can. They (Triumph) did their homework on the handling.

he is certainly saving those cars with V8 conversion as the TR7 engines were poorly built and not reliable for sure. I'm sure with their dedication the 4 cylinders are fairly reliable after modify them heavily
