Back again Pete for a refresher course , this time for the belt replacement it's getting to that point last time the video showed me the easy to remove the rear fender deck at true time saver after i took the pedals off and struggled to get them working properly - pays to take pictures - but removing those 2 hairpin clips speeds up the whole process 1st time the removal of the rear fenders was for drilling holes to move the seat reward my LX 255 didn't have enough room to slide between the seat and steering wheel so that needed to be corrected By far the Best Video covering rear fender removal and belt replacement on youtube i ever found

Agree with others that this is the best video I've seen for doing the belt replacement. I have a 20 year old GX255 and after struggling underneath for the better part of a day based on other videos that said the belt could be put on without removing anything, it took less than an hour to replace it once I saw how easily the deck/fender can be removed. I also liked that you got straight to the point without a lot of additional blabbing and showed the helpful entries in the service manual that I haven't seen anyone else show. Thx again.

And yes, most of them said you could change the belt without taking the fender off. I didnt see it that way. Great video RWP. Watched it a few times before taking the plunge today. Completed the job by myself in about 4 hours and that included changing out the drive belt for the 42" single stage snow thrower I have attached to my 99 GT235. I’ve got the 1999 235. I’ve got the jd integral hitch and Brinley plow and disc. This machine is a beast. I’ve kept her going for many years. I’ve needed to go ahead and replace this belt and finally a video. Thanks for sharing
Having the service manual was handy, but its still doesnt replace the "hands on" manual😄. Its pretty easy once you jump in. Good luck and let me know how the replacement goes.
Thanks for the very detailed video. It's about time I replace the transmission belt on my Gt235. Bought it used about twelve years ago to mow over an acre and pull yard trailers. Incredible workhorse this tractor has been with hardly anything needing repairs. Mine has the Briggs Vanguard 18 hp and has been ultra reliable and still uses no oil and fires right up in any weather. Nice looking one you have there.

Time for a refresher course Pete , waiting for warm weather to replace my drive belt reason being i use the JD for blow snow , i did have to replace the blower belt a bit of a pain with a floating bolt that was hard to get a wrench on - problem solve welded the bolt to the bracket the pulley covers the bolt and was hard to keep the wrench on - not no more - Still the best video i have ever seen on youtube to remove the rear fender assembly unit Clear instructions & Excellent filming of the process -

It's been a long time Pete but today it happened the new drive belt is in my LX 255 finally with that it was break time for a cup of coffee , tomorrow i'll put the fender / body back on - when everything is done the snow thrower goes on Your video was the game changer to study what i had to do , although your GT 225 is a bit different - Thank You very much Procrastination was my main problem and finding my tools etc.

Great video Pete , i like that you removed the body it showed another way to do that . I removed the pedals when i did it mainly to re position the seat rearward and drilled holes in the body . Reason for that was make it easier to get on the tractor, it made a little move room between the steering wheel and seat , it helped but after trying my idea i found out i need to move it back even more - so your video makes it easier to do that , the other reason my drive belt needs replacement so i'll be able to accomplish two things

Hi Ricardo. Yes, mine has the 15 hp kohler. Bought used in 2006. Its either a 2001 or 2002 model year. Its been a tank. No engine or transmission problems. I just do regular oil change and lube. Im glad we dont have to worry about moving snow here in western Oregon. 😄 Cant wait till spring!!!

I checked with a John Deere dealer they wanted $1,600 for a LX 255 with a mower deck We had been to Oregon Central Coast many times stayed in Depoe Bay and took a trip to Silverton to a Friday night car show met a fellow Hot Rod guy on the HAMB website , it was always a good time in Oregon

I crawled under mine without its deck on and loosed to 2 pulleys, dropped my spring and removed old belt. Reverse to install.. It can be installed without removing body/fan/etc.. Defenatly done it the hard way here... Ive changed mine twice without all this work.
I just changed mine on my GT235 yesterday, I had to replace the PTO clutch and was able to fish the belt around the fan from underneath the tractor ( I have a winch lift and lifted almost straight up) without removing the fender and all. With removing the PTO clutch the went right on without any issue. So happy I was able to di it that way.
So close Pete finally removed the main body on my LX 255 close to your GT 225 other than my rear wheels have a C clip yours is bolted on your gas tank is different you can see the fan my tank buts up to the chassis above the deck knob . so the JD is up on car ramps and it's break time i'll have to lift the gas tank or cut the old belt and try to loop the new belt over the fan - it's 50 out a very cool 50 and 30's are coming - snow also so the belt needs to be installed and the blower put on soon
Your close!! I hope your in a garage or shop!! I wonder if you can just loosen and tilt the tank, or if it has to be completely removed. Either way, Im sure youll figure it out. We are in Oregon, and we just finished with an "atmospheric river" . Dumped about 5" of rain this week. We usually dont get much snow, thank goodness. If we do, I made a snow pusher for the bucket on my jd 1025r. Let me know how it goes!!
Start at the front removing the clutch pulley and feed it down until it slides over the transmission fan. Easy to do if you raise the tractor up from the front as vertical as you can. Then walk up to it and work away.

It surely is. I bought it new in 2004. I just replaced the mower blade belts for the first time last year and right now replacing the main drive belt. Another thing that just blows my mind is that I am still running on the original battery and it is 19 years old! (Knock on wood). About 2 years ago I added the powerflow bagger setup for it. It truly is a beast and love it to this day!
The 23 year old manual recommends using John Deere low viscosity Hy-GARD J20D for the transmission/transaxle fluid. That transmission/ hydrolic oil has been replaced by the John Deere low viscosity Hy-Gard oil TY22000. But you can call your local John Deere dealership to confirm!! Thanks for the question!!
Take a good look at the steel post that runs through your PTO ASAP. Their PTO basically saws the little stop post right off. This lets the PTO spin around ripping the wires out, it throws the deck belt off & if your lucky it wont bend the belt release rod up or worse to the deck? Deere went really cheap and just welded the metal PTO stop post to these frames. A new post must be welded back on once it snaps off but its best to fix it before it costs you a $150 PTO too at the very least. AGAIN- Wires just get yanked right out of the $150+ PTO when it goes. JD branded PTO is $300+.
I dealt with this when I saw there was only 1/8” or less left of that pin. Filled it with a weld and filed it so the PTO would fit over it. I was changing out the PTO, saw it and a cut in the belt. Changed/fixed everything. Now need to attach and ‘readjust’ the pedals. Thanks, your video helped.
Hi Pete I have followed your video and it has been most helpful, however I am stuck getting the new belt on. Do you start at the PTO and then go over the fan? or remove the fan to get the last bit of belt on. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
I removed the fan . Then started the belt at the front pulley, then worked the belt onto the pulley thats under the fan I removed. It should be pretty straightforward. Is your tractor a gt225?
Hi Dave. My fan nut was not very tight. I think I could have held the pulley with my hand and loosened it. But if yours is tight, you could wrap a 3/8" rope around the pulley and cinch it with a large set of plyers. Or clamp a visegrip onto the pulley. If you have air tools, a quick burst with a air ratchet should loosen it. Let me know how it goes!! Im glad the video is helping you!
Thanks for advice, in the end I managed to get the belt on without removing the fan, first placing belt around the base of the fan but not on the pulley then starting to fit at the front and working back and easing onto the fan pulley last which went on easier than I was anticipating.
Haha, great idea!! Theres always more than one way to fix a problem! Did you take off the metal fender to gain access to the fan? Ive seen guys doing that without removing the fender.
I have a gt235, I lost my drive today. My pedals lost pressure so I looked at the drive belt and it was good. The belt turns the pully but doesn't turn the axels. Their is some up and down play on the pulley. It did make a whiney noise before I lost pedal pressure.
Ugh!!! I wish it was the belt. Did you check the hitch pin clip on the pedal linkage? In the video, i show that clip. It may have come off. I hope its not the tranny. If you need any info from the manual, let me know. Thanks for commenting and watching.
It's very possible, especially if you can visibly see the pully spinning. Ill check my manual, to see what it looks like, after you remove that pulley.
I finally got a day off work.. first thing I did before I tore into it I checked the axel release, it was all the way in. So I removed the back shell and the gas tank. Then I put my impact on the nut and the drive pulley came right off like it wasn't attached. So the pully and the shaft are both striped. Now I took my channel locks and turned the shaft but the axels didn't turn.
It doesnt sound good. Ive never torn into a transaxle before. But you cant break it anymore than it already is😉. What have you got to lose? Sounds like a weekend project. If you tear it down, let me know how it goes. You should video it. It would make for great content. Good luck!!

Hey Matthew, my belt part# is M127523. Should be the same on your tractor. To be sure, find your serial number label on the frame. Call your local john deere dealer. And give the parts counter guy your model and serial number. He'll be able to tell you what part number you need. And they are usually competitive with Amazon. Amazon has that part number for $23.00. I don't understand why you took the ( body ) off when all your work is underneath the mower ? Hoped you cleaned out all the grass in the frame rails . I replaced my drive belt twice and had to replace the fan once, for some reason it got loose on the shaft, nut was tight, and I never took the body off, wasn't that bad, block up all fours in the air so you can get under there and have at it.
Hi Gary. The belt or fan replacement can definitely be done without taking the body off, ( for some reason JD calls it a fender).But I wanted to see how much work it would be to remove it. It definately made it easier to install the belt. I guess im lucky to only have had to replace mine only once in the 15 years that I've owned it. How old is your tractor?It was a fun little project!! I agree, no problem changing the belt without removing the fenders, I already had the mower deck off and it probably took about 1/2 hour to change the drive belt. I picked up the front end using a cherry picker with a nylon strap wrapped around the front axle so it was easy to work from the bottom. Once the tension spring is removed, spin the belt upward off the rear pulley so it is between the pulley and fan, this provides enough slack to remove the belt from the engine pulley and get it past the PTO clutch. Once the belt has been removed from the front pulleys, it can then be easily slid past the fan on the rear pulley and removed. Installation is the reverse, install the belt over the fan first, leaving it between the fan and pulley, then the new belt can be routed through the remaining pulleys and installed on the engine pulley. Last step is to spin the belt onto the rear pulley and install the tension spring. I loosened all the pulleys with guides as described in the video for belt removal and installation.
I had a shop replace transmission belt and ever since I got it back it's leaking transmission fluid. They've looked at it and claimed they can't find anything wrong. Seems to be coming out of the reservoir cap during operation. Thoughts?
Hi B Will. Thats frustrating. I cant see how replacing the trany belt would cause a trany leak. And the belt isnt close to the cap. Even if the old belt broke really bad, i cant see it damaging the trany or the cap. Do you know if they removed the fender to replace the belt? Its possible that the reservoir bottle got damaged while removing or installing the fender. But they would never admit to that. Would a new cap help? Very frustrating. Let me know what you find out!
Well....I got the belt over the fan without taking the fender cover off by removing the right rear tire but quickly realized that the belt isn't long enough to go over the PTO clutch on a GT245...No way I was going to get that PTO off that had been on there for over 20 years without a puller and possibly a torch... I should have started at the front first and removed the fan while the old belt was still on like on this video.....Luckly I have a power impact ratchet and was able to pry against the pulley to get the fan off...Which I would have found this video FIRST....‼ Anyway, you can get the belt on and the fan off by taking the right rear tire off, loosing the fender cover and raising it up while still on the mower if you don't want to take completely off and a good power ratchet helps...My Dewalt 1/2 inch drive would barely fit in the space but I got it in there.

I just changed mine on my GT235 yesterday, I had to replace the PTO clutch and was able to fish the belt around the fan from underneath the tractor ( I have a winch lift and lifted almost straight up) without removing the fender and all. With removing the PTO clutch the went right on without any issue. So happy I was able to di it that way.

So close Pete finally removed the main body on my LX 255 close to your GT 225 other than my rear wheels have a C clip yours is bolted on
your gas tank is different you can see the fan my tank buts up to the chassis above the deck knob . so the JD is up on car ramps and it's break time i'll have to lift the gas tank
or cut the old belt and try to loop the new belt over the fan - it's 50 out a very cool 50 and 30's are coming - snow also so the belt needs to be installed and the blower put on soon

I wonder if you can just loosen and tilt the tank, or if it has to be completely removed. Either way, Im sure youll figure it out.
We are in Oregon, and we just finished with an "atmospheric river" . Dumped about 5" of rain this week. We usually dont get much snow, thank goodness.
If we do, I made a snow pusher for the bucket on my jd 1025r.

Start at the front removing the clutch pulley and feed it down until it slides over the transmission fan. Easy to do if you raise the tractor up from the front as vertical as you can. Then walk up to it and work away.
That definitely is another way to get it done!!!!

It surely is. I bought it new in 2004. I just replaced the mower blade belts for the first time last year and right now replacing the main drive belt. Another thing that just blows my mind is that I am still running on the original battery and it is 19 years old! (Knock on wood). About 2 years ago I added the powerflow bagger setup for it. It truly is a beast and love it to this day!

The 23 year old manual recommends using John Deere low viscosity Hy-GARD J20D for the transmission/transaxle fluid.
That transmission/ hydrolic oil has been replaced by the John Deere low viscosity Hy-Gard oil TY22000. But you can call your local John Deere dealership to confirm!! Thanks for the question!!
Take a good look at the steel post that runs through your PTO ASAP. Their PTO basically saws the little stop post right off. This lets the PTO spin around ripping the wires out, it throws the deck belt off & if your lucky it wont bend the belt release rod up or worse to the deck?
Deere went really cheap and just welded the metal PTO stop post to these frames. A new post must be welded back on once it snaps off but its best to fix it before it costs you a $150 PTO too at the very least.
AGAIN- Wires just get yanked right out of the $150+ PTO when it goes. JD branded PTO is $300+.

I dealt with this when I saw there was only 1/8” or less left of that pin. Filled it with a weld and filed it so the PTO would fit over it. I was changing out the PTO, saw it and a cut in the belt. Changed/fixed everything. Now need to attach and ‘readjust’ the pedals. Thanks, your video helped.

I removed the fan . Then started the belt at the front pulley, then worked the belt onto the pulley thats under the fan I removed. It should be pretty straightforward.
Is your tractor a gt225?

Hi, I have no belt to tension as it’s snapped, how do I now undo the fan bolt without it just going round and round. Thanks for any help, great video.
Hi Dave. My fan nut was not very tight. I think I could have held the pulley with my hand and loosened it.
But if yours is tight, you could wrap a 3/8" rope around the pulley and cinch it with a large set of plyers. Or clamp a visegrip onto the pulley. If you have air tools, a quick burst with a air ratchet should loosen it.

Thanks for advice, in the end I managed to get the belt on without removing the fan, first placing belt around the base of the fan but not on the pulley then starting to fit at the front and working back and easing onto the fan pulley last which went on easier than I was anticipating.
Haha, great idea!! Theres always more than one way to fix a problem! Did you take off the metal fender to gain access to the fan? Ive seen guys doing that without removing the fender.

I have a gt235, I lost my drive today. My pedals lost pressure so I looked at the drive belt and it was good. The belt turns the pully but doesn't turn the axels. Their is some up and down play on the pulley. It did make a whiney noise before I lost pedal pressure.
Ugh!!! I wish it was the belt. Did you check the hitch pin clip on the pedal linkage? In the video, i show that clip. It may have come off. I hope its not the tranny. If you need any info from the manual, let me know.

It maybe the pulley on the transaxle. That pulley is splined and it may have stripped. It happened to a friends John Deere.
It's very possible, especially if you can visibly see the pully spinning.
Ill check my manual, to see what it looks like, after you remove that pulley.
I finally got a day off work.. first thing I did before I tore into it I checked the axel release, it was all the way in. So I removed the back shell and the gas tank.
Then I put my impact on the nut and the drive pulley came right off like it wasn't attached. So the pully and the shaft are both striped. Now I took my channel locks and turned the shaft but the axels didn't turn.
It doesnt sound good. Ive never torn into a transaxle before. But you cant break it anymore than it already is😉. What have you got to lose? Sounds like a weekend project. If you tear it down, let me know how it goes. You should video it. It would make for great content. Good luck!!

Hey Matthew, my belt part# is M127523. Should be the same on your tractor. To be sure, find your serial number label on the frame. Call your local john deere dealer. And give the parts counter guy your model and serial number. He'll be able to tell you what part number you need. And they are usually competitive with Amazon.
Amazon has that part number for $23.00.

I don't understand why you took the ( body ) off when all your work is underneath the mower ? Hoped you cleaned out all the grass in the frame rails . I replaced my drive belt twice and had to replace the fan once, for some reason it got loose on the shaft, nut was tight, and I never took the body off, wasn't that bad, block up all fours in the air so you can get under there and have at it.
Hi Gary. The belt or fan replacement can definitely be done without taking the body off, ( for some reason JD calls it a fender).But I wanted to see how much work it would be to remove it. It definately made it easier to install the belt. I guess im lucky to only have had to replace mine only once in the 15 years that I've owned it. How old is your tractor?It was a fun little project!! I agree, no problem changing the belt without removing the fenders, I already had the mower deck off and it probably took about 1/2 hour to change the drive belt. I picked up the front end using a cherry picker with a nylon strap wrapped around the front axle so it was easy to work from the bottom. Once the tension spring is removed, spin the belt upward off the rear pulley so it is between the pulley and fan, this provides enough slack to remove the belt from the engine pulley and get it past the PTO clutch. Once the belt has been removed from the front pulleys, it can then be easily slid past the fan on the rear pulley and removed. Installation is the reverse, install the belt over the fan first, leaving it between the fan and pulley, then the new belt can be routed through the remaining pulleys and installed on the engine pulley. Last step is to spin the belt onto the rear pulley and install the tension spring. I loosened all the pulleys with guides as described in the video for belt removal and installation.

I had a shop replace transmission belt and ever since I got it back it's leaking transmission fluid. They've looked at it and claimed they can't find anything wrong. Seems to be coming out of the reservoir cap during operation. Thoughts?
Hi B Will. Thats frustrating. I cant see how replacing the trany belt would cause a trany leak. And the belt isnt close to the cap. Even if the old belt broke really bad, i cant see it damaging the trany or the cap. Do you know if they removed the fender to replace the belt? Its possible that the reservoir bottle got damaged while removing or installing the fender. But they would never admit to that. Would a new cap help? Very frustrating. Let me know what you find out!

Well....I got the belt over the fan without taking the fender cover off by removing the right rear tire but quickly realized that the belt isn't long enough to go over the PTO clutch on a GT245...No way I was going to get that PTO off that had been on there for over 20 years without a puller and possibly a torch...
I should have started at the front first and removed the fan while the old belt was still on like on this video.....Luckly I have a power impact ratchet and was able to pry against the pulley to get the fan off...Which I would have found this video FIRST....‼
Anyway, you can get the belt on and the fan off by taking the right rear tire off, loosing the fender cover and raising it up while still on the mower if you don't want to take completely off and a good power ratchet helps...My Dewalt 1/2 inch drive would barely fit in the space but I got it in there.
