- Mechanicum can be a confusing army for the newcomer - it's units all look very similar, and it's a very different force to the Adeptus Mechanicus of Warhammer 40k. So in this video, I go through all the option available to the Mechanicum army, where to find models for them, and how to tell them apart!

this legend describes things so well. don't even need to be into it like me, just love the explanations
Thanks for de-obfuscating the techno-arcana of the Mechanicum. I love that you’re continuing to coordinate your flannel to the army/faction.
In 30k they use the power of the STC to build the Mechanicum armies, in the current times some use the power of the STL
Would love a Lore follow up on their role during the Heresy
This video brought a tear to my eye. The 30k mechanicum design was PERFECT and I hope GW keeps the same art style when updating them!
Mechanicum truly look epic in 30k. 40k admech models just don't feel the same, I wish GW didn't focus so much on their skitarii aesthetic there. There's only so much I can do with kataphrons and kastellans and tech-priests
30k mechancum seems like more body horror than 40k mechanicus
Yeah, much more so. It's less Jules Verne and more WEIRD
@@ArbitorIan That's what I like about it. 🙂
I mean, there's _always_ body horror whenever the tech priests of Mars are involved.
@@Bluecho4 perhaps, but it's a sliding scale! 🙂
30k is less steampunk and more Eldritch body horror
Always liked the Mechanicum, shame that many models are Forge World exclusives.
That said, I've been toying with the idea of converting some Vorax Battle-Automatat from Space Crusade dreadnoughts. They look kinda similar.
Wait ther are blastic mpoels?
I have both and i think they'd be too small and to tall to quite fit the vorax, they could however make good castellax.
Fast becoming my favourite channel, outstanding content, audiobooks surely in the future
Really love your guides mate you have helped me greatly with my recent venture into the horus heresy, cheers for expanding further on this, and for expanding the burnt hole in my pocket lol. cheers mate.
Very good video and very informative. Keep up the good work.
Least favourite faction, game I don't play, watched it all and enjoyed thoroughly. 🙃
i needed this video so bad. Thank you!
It’s a shame more of the 40K stuff can’t be used in Heresy, I always thought it was pretty cool.
Yeah, I mean all the tech priests can, and servitors, skitarii and even Kastelans could all find a place but you do need a fair amount of resin too.
@@ArbitorIan I imagine that when they finish doing the plastic marine models, they'll do some of the other armies as semi plastic. It will take time though I expect. How popular are armies outside of marines will be the key. If they released them as dual 30k/40k models it'd broaden their appeal and viability though.
if you ally a titan legion detachment, you can take secutarii pelatsts, which are pretty much skitarii. and you also have secutarii marshals, so that's your skitarii marshal.
and no, you don't need a titan to ally this detachment to your mechanicum
Amazing video as always Ian. Thank you. 😁
Ian: “the Vultarax Stratos-Automata are your equivalent to a flier”
Mortarion: “flier, you say? Tell me more”
You have quickly become my top favourite hobby CZcams creator here. Thanks ❤️
What a nice video to end a week on! Thanks
Having been looking at the possibility of maybe someday playing 30k Mechanicum, this is an amzing vid. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the Break down!
I realy hope we get some in blastic!
for kit basing the floating platform, im using one from the sisters of battle plastic range.
Thanks for the video
I guess there is a special department in the Mechanicum only responsible to come up with all of those names.
I just dipped my toes into Mechanicum and you did me a great idea how to use the 40K combat patrol boxs content.
The Kataphron can be used as armed servitors (but need two boxes worth) with the tech-priest in an auxilia. The Skiitari can be used as tech-thralls and the Dunecrawler can be a good base for the Ordo Reductor Artillery tank. Two CP boxes give something like 500 points. I have on order two sets of Thallax and one Castellax also got a plastic tech-priest dominus for HQ so all this gives like the first thousand points.
When they discontinued the Magos Dominus (with Irad Cleanser) I was so bummed out. I had just really started getting into Heresy and the fact that they got rid of the only generic HQ for Mechanicum - and one of my all time favorite models - felt like a slap in the face. The “last chance to buy” years were such a nightmare. We had no clue they would eventually do plastic and it felt like they were abandoning the faction. I almost wonder if they had planned on it, but all that COVID money turned it around.
I imagine many people bulk out their Mechanicum armies with plastic models for 40K. Since it's cheaper, and when you're done you also have an Adeptus Mechanicus army.
I've been into 40k for almost two decades and consider myself pretty knowledgeable. But this amount of faux-latin and patterns of chassis made even my head spin. Can't imagine how a newcomer could make sense of this without help. A link to this video should be in the back of every copy of Liber Mechanicum!
I love these models.
Ty
Nice work! I'm still baffled as to why the Arlatax has no model as the rules have been around for years and frankly a bladed dakka jump-Domitar with a plasma cannon (used to be a twin-linked plasma blaster) sounds magnificent(ly horrific). Tarantulas are "Fast Attack" in a similar way to how Tau Pathfinders are FA: they get put into position by something fast (airdrop traditionally for Tarantulas...and yes, they should be able to move (and they used to!) hence the name, and via Devilfish for Pathfinders, to complete the analogy). I 🖤 my Mechanicum 😅
Doesn't Draykavac come with an extra head to be just a random Techpriest?
I suppose even if he doesn't that wouldn't be the hardest conversion in the world.
I got him, he does come with a normal head
@@Unknown-qj9sm Thank you!
Great overview Ian. Taaaa. Though can anyone explain to me why the fuck the Skitarii aren't in the Liber Michanicum when they are featured in half the HH books, up to and including having them as actual charactes withactual story-lines etc. (Rho-Mu-31, Transacata-7Y1, Arook Serotid).
Man, I was really hoping I could take a knight lancer
Imperial militia, and cults next please
Hey Ian. You might not’ve noticed but Ursarax have been listed as “No longer Available” since March.
Either getting plastic, going away for good or getting new boxes/upc made or the moulds wore out and they've not made new ones yet is what they typically may no longer available on fw. One of the downsides of resin is your moulds typically only give you around 50 castings before needing replacement, higher or lower depending upon a variety factors.
Ian: making sense of massively unwieldy GW army lists so we don't have to XD
If I could somehow unload all the minis I'll never paint, and start something new, it would be Mechanicum.
It’s a shame that these awesome units can’t be used in 40K. I was told that it would be anti-lore because the Mechanicus thinks they’re heresy or some dumb bullshit.
Yeah that's bunk considering there was a plan to bring the mechanicum units into 40k in a cancelled IA book called fires of cyraxus. The "truth" is more likely that a lot of the heresy era mechanicum tech has been lost to time, however given that this was the same fate of volkite and that returned in 9th edition I could see them using the same justification of them being either "neo" versions or rediscovering old tech, the FW 10th edition index would be the perfect time to add these units so here's hoping!
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but lore-wise there isn't a reason why some of the 40k vehicles (the onager dunecrawler and skorpius tank, come to mind) can't be used in a mechanicum army. I guess the lore implication is that they are "new", but there's no lore I could find to actually confirm that, really. Additionally, skitarii were a confirmed thing during the heresy, but for some reason aren't usable in the game?
This alongside the inability to use most heresy kits for 40k proves to me that GW seem pretty confused about both of these factions. Here's hoping that changes once dark mechanicum armies become a reality in 40k.
i love this army, and its why im getting a 3d printer
I don’t play either tabletop game, but there aren’t any skitarii in the list? That’s strange since I’m pretty sure I’ve read 30k novels that feature them heavily.
Yeah it’s weird
titans dont work as completely separate armies as they can only be taken as an optional detachment, not a primary and even if they could they don't have a single line unit.
If only we had 40k rules for them...
I checked out because no nice terrain. I mean titans and knights.
I'll be back later.
The Omnissiah approves of this video.
Can't Tarantulas have tank-tracks added to them or am I thinking of something else?
You might be thinking of the Rapier carrier?
what about the secutarii?
They're now only in the Titan Legion list.
✌️💚
What a shame that so much of this army is forgeworld only! I love the look at a lot of the robots but don't want to remortgage my house for it...
Bro, just don’t have a house.
I much prefer the Heresy Mechanicum to the overly steampunky AdMech.
Difficult to start, no. Difficult to know when to QUIT yes.
Beep Whoop Whistle Buzz. Or summat 😅
🤔
Wait! What? Can you try again in English? 😀
: D
Do you want bad quality, low quantity and extremely overpriced resin? Or do you want bad quality, even lower quantity and even more expensive overpriced resin?
Oh wait, you can maybe get 1 or 2 HQ choices from the most prohibitively expensive range from the 40k setting?
This is a joke, at least the Custodes have their basic infantry in plastic, but that's a whole nother joke onto itself.
When FW will become a site purely for cool character units and NOTHING else, the hobby side of 30k will be slightly more affordable. Until then, I'm not selling a kidney for 1 bot😢
Shame mechanicum suck in game
