  • After a winter in the basement, my Lifetime Yukon Kayak's trolling motor is all installed and ready for sea trials. This is the very first testing that I did on the lake.
    I am using a Newport Vessel 32 LB thrust trolling motor and a 40 amp hour lithium iron battery. At full speed the trolling motor draws about 29 amps so I am expecting about an hour and a half at full speed. I will be testing this over the summer and post my findings.
    I found that 1st, 3rd and 5th were the best gears to be in as they gave the most thrust. In 1st I was getting 2mph, 3rd 3mph and 5th about 3.5 (this was against the wind). There really wasn't much difference so 3rd is what I plan to use most.

      I am digging the fact that it's quieter than paddling. I wasn't expecting that.

    This is so insane! Are you an engineer or something? I don't think I could do this myself.

      haha! Nope, not an engineer and my first time doing something like this. Just got the inspiration and decided to do it. Thank you for the kind words and good luck with your future projects.

      Thank you. I'm happy I could help with that decision. If you take a look at my other videos, I have a complete walkthrough of the motor and steering system. I have no regrets.

    How long is the battery good for if you are running the trolling motor constantly at a medium to fast speed? Ballpark

      @SciStuff  Před 2 lety +1

      It's a 40 AMP hour battery and at full thrust the motor draw 29 amps so I expect about an hour and a half at full throttle. Double that for half speed. I plan on doing a full test by running at full speed till it dies later this month. Since it's a lithium iron battery, I may get even better results.

    What do you think of that kayak overall? I'm picking up my Yukon tomorrow.

      I could not have asked for a better kayak to start with. It's stable enough and designed to be modded. This made adding all the goodies easier than expected. It does seem to have a top speed though. No matter how fast I paddle (or use the motor), my kid beats me in their 10' Walmart special. With all my mods, I'm in about $1k which is about the range of a pedal kayak. I however have power and where my feet sit is clear which helps for fishing.

      @@SciStuff thank you for the feedback. I've been fishing out of a 10 foot Pelican sit in. I just wanted an upgrade and this seemed like the best boat in my price range.
