Our border terrier tangled with a skunk this morning. Hubby gave her a bath in the shower using the recommended soap recipe. She smells much better! Thank you for sharing!

My Australian Shepherd is a little smarter and was right behind her every step of the way...the first time ONLY 😂. He took less direct, but equally effective, damage.
I scaled up the recipe for 2 dogs plus a little extra for that water resistant coat and it worked great!!! Seriously, thank you so much. This was my first time dealing with this.

It's 5:18 where I'm at and my Australian Shepherd was the one who jetted out and got skunked while my Border Collie stayed sitting next to me.. lol
My Cavalier got skunked this morning, 10 minutes before I was due to log into a work meeting on line. OY! Good thing my colleagues are all pet people and understanding. I used the recipe and have to admit this was the BEST de--skunking mixture! THANK YOU yet again, Dr Jones, for all you do for us!
Yep! That works... I use Dawn Dish Liquid instead because it is more concentrated, however whatever is handy works... I didn't use any oils though. I keep a batch of supplies handy so I am prepared, just don't pre mix everything. Wait to mix everything together after it happens.
The sooner you get them washed the better. The tomato juice does not work at all, it just makes a mess.

yes exactly, plus the skunk smell was in my backyard so i couldnt open my back 2 sliding doors, which greatly hindered air flow, the smell is trapped in my house .....ugghhhh
So this has to be done three to four times for it to get the smell out, now the smell is on my wife, bad! So one added solution is to use between 4-6 oz of pure vanilla extract with warm water pour over dog and it is awesome! Then for the smell in the house boil a pan of water on the stove with a few oz of vanilla extract, I even put some vanilla and water in a cool mist ultrasonic humidifier in our bedroom and it smells so much better. We added saucers of coffee or beans in every room to neutralize the house smell! Keep original Mexican pure vanilla in the house! Life saver!
This is a wonderful video to watch after the skunk smell is gone. With a freshly skunked dog, I could not find relevant information fast enough.

This is great info...I use a batter bowl that lets me get my big paws in. I do not know if it helps, but I use Dawn detergent since it breaks up oils. I found that it is not good to bathe Maxi in water, because many skunks use two chemicals...one that stinks and a second that reacts with water to stink after a bath. Follow the vets direction and you should have a tolerable dog. I do not think peppermint oil will work with Maxi...she seems to prefer the aroma of cat poop.

Veterinary Secrets Hi, I have 2 semi feral cats that have both been sprayed on their butts by a skunk that was under my deck. I like your solution but my problem is I doubt my cats will stay still for this treatment. I thought maybe I could give them treats and sneak up from behind and just pour the solution on the hind quarter but I'm sure they will run before I can rinse. Will this make them sick until I can sneak up to rinse? Please help!

My Shelby got tagged by a skunk and the vet also recommended this same recipe. This demo vid is great; however, after watching this, I realized what my vet told me was more effective.
Shelby was a Basenji/Blk Lab mix, so a short hair coat. The vet recommended 1qt of hydrogen peroxide, 1/2c baking soda (I went all out & used 2-3x that amt. I really do think it helped a lot) and copious amts of dish soap per 10lbs of body weight. With thicker/longer coats, you may need to double or triple this amt. I know this sounds crazy but alternative do you have, right?
Thoroughly wet your dog with water first. Bc dogs usually get hit in the face, that area, the ears, chest, neck, front legs and ribs will be the primary areas to concentrate on.
Mix 2qts f the h.p./b.s./soap in a pitcher. Stir well but expect some of the soda to settle in the bottom. To keep your pooch from licking at the mix near their mouth, use a muzzle or snugly but not tightly tie a shoestring around their snout. Carefully scoop some of the liquid mix in your hand and work into the fur on their face around their eyes, chin, lips, jowls/cheeks, nose, chest, neck & front legs. Keep out of their eyes. DO NOT POUR ON THEIR HEAD!!!! Repeat until almost all liquid is gone. Take some of the soda sludge in the bottom and working into the fur. This works as an extra potent deodorizer bc it stays in the fur. If their ears droop, it's best to apply the sludge just to the outside fur. If they're erect, carefully rub the sludge on the ears, but not enough to let it drip down into their ears. If this happens, they'll understandably wanna shake their head which also shakes off all the mix you just applied.
Refill the pitcher with another helping of the mix, and repeat this process until the sprayed areas are drenched in h.p. and caked in the soda sludge.
Now here's the tricky but most important part.
On order for the mix to have a chance to do its magic, the dog needs to "marinate" for 20min. Absolutely no shaking with minimal movement. My babydoll was an angel and stood still the whole time with no problem. Best thing is to make them lie down. Monitor them the whole time to make sure they behave. Keeping the environment quiet will help big time with keeping them calm.
After these long but necessary 20min, rinse them off thoroughly beginning at their head. With Shelby, I'm being completely honest when I say 95% of the smell disappeared. The only place I could still smell a little bit of the skunk was around her jowls (mainly bc she was wet). The vet assured me that will go away on its own.

Do you think it's possible you read your dog wrong? In my mind, it looked like Pippi was rolling on the ground trying to roll that smell off of her and coming to you because she knows you like to pet her; Thus she wants you to pet her in hopes you would pet the skunk smell off of her.

Hello! My cat got sprayed last night. My mom is afraid to use hydrogen peroxide because she heard it can change the color of our cats pelt. He’s a black cat. Will it be permanent? Either or, she’s going to buy some skunk shampoo and give him a nice bath tomorrow.
I used peroxide once and caused my pup to have a big infection that caused inpatient stay with daily injections. So we went with clean wood Ash bath carefully not to choke them or us then tomato juice scrub2x in big hairy dogs. Then rinse well
Then scrub yourself and the bathroom too. We had 2 close the door and vent out the room for 24hrs. Then bathe regularly. All better
to bad i didn't know about this a couple years ago my little jack chased a skunk and got sprayed on so now i marked this down just in case lol thank you
Will this work if put in a hose end sprayer and spray in my yard where a skunk (marked its territory) stinks to high heaven when we go out in the yard?

This remedy is the only one that works fast but be sure to let it sit on the body for a few minutes and rinse it thoroughly also peppermint oil is really really concentrated I would use lavender or Rosemary or something more mild it could really burn a dog's eyes and even those I wouldn't use more than one drop

I made the same solution. At first the smell subsides greatly. After the dog was dry, I lifted her blanket and suddenly I got strong wifs of the smell all over again. My house is a skunk home now.
Bro.. half bottle of dawn dish soap, bottle of men’s axe body wash, bottle of listerine mouthwash, and wash multiple times... finish with a strippers conditioner. 👍 works great

I have used this mixture; but you should know it will need to be done upwards of 3 to 6 times and every thing the dog comes in contact with, like blankets dog bed etc. I have an acute sense of smell so most people won't notice the smell and might get by with 2 or 3 skunk baths.
Thank you for your video! My dad and mom are both veterinarians but they are asleep and your video saved me! So before the video I washed my Spencer (Boston terrier) with dish soap and then wiped him down with a rag that had hydrogen peroxide on it. Then saw your video and tried it. After the 10 minute waiting period I rinsed him and holy cow the smell of it sitting on him was worse than the skunk but it a “I know it’s working sort of stink” ....the water was so brown like he rolled in mud even though I literally just bathed him 30 minutes before! I’m in shock. I had to use more peppermint. I guess my boy was shot point blank with the skunk. So gross. Again thanks!

Georgi got nailed at 5:00 this morning. What a way to start a day! I used the Nature's Miracle I had left over from last time. It works pretty well - just squirt it on, let it sit for a few minutes, rinse it off, then shampoo as normal with oatmeal shampoo. It usually takes at least 2 times. I will try your recipe next time - I'm sure there will be a next time. I usually have everything on hand. Thanks for your great videos. Always informative!

My dog got sprayed by a skunk tonight. First time I have ever had to deal with this, and my vet gave me the same formula this vet is using. A direct hit skunk smell is about 1000x worse than ambient skunk smell. I have no idea how you can handle that smell and make a video, so kudos to you.

J H our dog was sprayed today and the vet said it can take months for the smell to dissipate because it’s an oil the skunk sprays. All you can do is wash every so often to help break it up and make it smell a little better lol.

Hi Dr? Jones! lol the joys of being a dog lover! I have always used COLGATE TOOTHPASTE. I found out by accident that it works like a minty shampoo, and gets out the stink, because I tried tomato juice, and Clyde just smelled like skunky spaghetti lol I really had nothing else to try, so I gave it a go! It doesn't dry out the skin and is cheap too!!

Awe, those eyes when she's waiting patiently to get rinsed. Dr. Jones, my dog has a small hematoma on her ear and I really don't want to take her to the vet cause the last hematoma ear surgery she had was very traumatic and we swore we'd never do that again. It's not very big at all but none the less it's there. Do we have to have such an invasive surgery again??

Same thing I though when I read this. My dog just got sprayed so I came to this video.
My cat got spayed last night directly into her face. Poor thing was making noise’s I never heard her make. Her eyes were shut close and she was drooling a-lot.
I immediately grabbed her and washed her eyes out and hosed her down with watter and this mixture. It helped so much.
I had to repeat the bathing with this multiple times and got rid of 98% of the smell. I will do one more time including the peppermint oil to the mix and hopefully this will do the trick.

It's still there - I need to relocate the skunks
read on line that white vinegar near area will get them to move. The only bad part is that it must be filled daily. Don't know if it works but it is a simple thing to try
This is the best de-skunking shampoo. It's important to apply to dry coat thoroughly and let soak for ten minutes. Careful to not get in eyes keep a bottle of eye wash saline around to rinse soap out of eyes if necessary.

I have a Jack Russell that got sprayed by a skunk 2 weeks ago and I tried tomato juice (didn't work) I tried vinegar and water (didn't work) I tried the Peroxide and soda and soap (didn't work) then I tried them all over again several times. It's better but if she comes close to me her face and neck are still rank. my house tub I can't get the smell out, because that is where I bathed her and I wore gloves while bathing her..but took off my gloves while drying her and then my hands stank for 3 days. I finally got my hands ok. But, my dog still stinks..I even went as far as trying to shave most of the dogs hair where I seen a yellow streak ( I think the spray line, went across her nose and down the side of her neck..I shaved a lot of hair off..she looks funny now and still stinks..OMG I want to scream. When she gets up on my chair for me to pet I start to gag and then I "taste the smell in my mouth and it makes me nauseous ....Can anyone help me. I called my vet the receptionist said "look on line"..thanks.
Lacy girl OH MY LORD the same shit just happened to me Tuesday night. My dog got sprayed in the face and I gave her a bath with no gloves on and that was my biggest mistake! Then I took a shower after and the next day I had class and everyone around me was like what the hell is that smell and I felt so embarrassed. Its been a couple of days now and today I tryed using chlorine and vinegar and I think that helped me out a lot but Im nose blind to it so yeah

Live a ways outside OKC, lots of stuff goes through the property. Possums, raccoons, skunks*, no issues with the dog or 2 cats with the skunks. Skunks have even walked by me within a couple of feet honoring our non-aggression pact. They don't screw with me, I don't screw with them. It has worked for almost 2 decades. New dog last week, young terrier, chases everything. Chased the skunk couple once and did not get sprayed. 2nd chase they made their point and it took 2 days to unstink her, me and the house. She did it AGAIN for the 3rd time this morning. Can't do this anymore, eyes burning, throats on fire, house reeks. I was wondering about baking soda, started searching and found this, hope this shampoo works. Thanks Doc.

@@VeterinarySecrets WOW. I mean WOW. I have spent hours with her in tub trying 'miracle' stuff, Dawn, pet shampoos, blah, blah, blah, but THIS.... THIS IS A GREAT MIX!!! Still a tiny trace of odor on her face near her eyes but it is a 10,000% improvement. Mixed up 2 quarts and suds were unreal. Used to wash cloth to work it in all over, plenty left over :)

Hi, Yes the peroxide is mean't for the fur- most things including shampoo are very irritating to the eyes. When this is the case, use water, or saline eye flush solution
