  • Gettysburg Rebels is the gripping true story of five young men who grew up in Gettysburg, moved south to Virginia in the 1850s, joined the Confederate army - and returned "home" as foreign invaders for the great battle in July 1863. Drawing on rarely seen documents and family histories, as well as military service records and contemporary accounts, Tom McMillan delves into the backgrounds of Wesley Culp, Henry Wentz and the three Hoffman brothers in a riveting tale of Civil War drama and intrigue.
Author Tom McMillan had a long career in sports journalism, as a newspaper sports writer, a talk show host, and, most recently, as Vice President of Communications for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Now retired, Tom has dived into historical research with two Civil War books: Armistead and Hancock (published 2021), and Gettysburg Rebels (published 2017). His first book was Flight 93: The Story, The Aftermath and The Legacy of American Courage on 9/11 (published 2014). All of Tom’s books are available online at Amazon.com.

Outstanding presentation Tom. I gotta read your books. I grew up in Norristown, Pennsylvania and I have been fascinated by the War Between the States since I was a young boy.
I'm about your age now, and living in New England, but I'll always be a Pennsylvania boy. All the best.

What great stories and Super job done by the MacMillians! I was hanging on every word. Having a GGGrandfather that fought in the Civil War and my Love for Gettysburg made it all very special. I enjoy writing down information from Civil War Vets and researching their regimental flags, histories and the like. Thank You So Much! Many Blessings and Great Journeys with Joy of Being! This is an interesting story. I will have to read it. I was aware of the Wentz and Culp families, but not all these details.

It is amazing to think these soldiers could actually fire on their own friends, neighbors and acquaintences, much less their own flesh and blood... Fascinating and fresh Gettysburg History, thank you!

My son and I are the the last of this Hoffman bloodline. I have the full Hoffman blood-line in actual paper if anyone is interested, back to 1785 which includes Frances/William/Wilhelm our "brick-wall" as we can't find anything past him being a carriage-maker who died in Baltimore.
I have visited Gettysburg and have always been curious to get in touch with family members. I have actually contacted family. Some of them are in Texas and last knew, cousins in Vegas around my age. Yes, this story is true as I have actual "paper" in a giant binder collected over 30+ years.
And yes, being a rebel is in the bloodline.
Tom, please reach out to me.

Please dont stop feeding the birds! They are going away. Today I saw many young crows practically starving because they were gathered in a group close to the people, some with mouths open, and one was trying to make eye contact with me and I had to see what I had to offer. When I threw some banana chips they rushed over so quickly and ate evry crumb. They looked so dishelveled, feathers everywhere, they were tiny and skinny and looked overall not healthy. When I say many, I meant that all the crows throughout my day as I commute to/from work, an average of 4hrs a day, (yes I know how much time that is but to me it's worth it.). I see only groups of about 8-12 crows in any given parking lot where, in the past, (as recent as this time last year) there were at least 50 or so crows hanging in smaller groups around the same area. I dont see or hear the song birds much anymore. If I do its like one bird. When I asked people if they have noticed the birds not being around the majority of responses I get is that the birds decided to go back to the woods, or they havent noticed. There are other things I have noticed with the birds that are worrysome but would take me very long 2 type up on here. Still, I am very concerned. Please, Feed the Birds! Winter is coming.

Pretty great, not so subtle virtue signal about "fighting on the side that perpetuated slavery" at the end there. We would've never known that. Make sure to thank all the upper class, woke, college educated suburbanite white women and AOC for filling us in there, pal.

Considering that some states still teach children that the war was fought over "State's Rights" without ever mentioning that it was the right to own others as property, then yeah it needs to be stated. I'm sure you probably think that reality is a whole concept, however.
