- View never-before-seen Civil War artillery damage from the Battle of Gettysburg! Civil War history buffs will not want to miss this video. ACHS Historian Tim Smith describes the fighting near the brickyard on the afternoon of July 1, 1863. Coster's Brigade stood and faced two brigades under Confederate General Jubal Early: Hays & Avery, while the remainder of the Eleventh Corps pulled back through the town of Gettysburg to Cemetery Hill. Tim then discusses visible artillery shells & damage on the northeast side of Gettysburg near the fighting that took place in the brickyard.
You can download a walking tour map of visible artillery shells in Gettysburg buildings here:

That is quite a few artillery shells. I find that so fascinating that they are still there. I saw some at Fredericksburg and Manassas too, but not that many.
This is fascinating, Tim. Am I too Gettysburg-nerdy to say, that I would love to own a home there with Battle Damage? One was up for sale recently, but it must have sold. I'm keeping my eye out.. Thank you, Tim, it always makes my mornings, these great ACHS videos!
Tim and ACHS thank you so much for these videos. I try to come to Gettysburg every other year, but this year my daughter is getting married durning the time I like to visit. And these videos help fill the void of not going there. So cheers and keep up the videos!
Our pleasure!
Again another fascinating piece of history on the battle of Gettysburg. Keep bring them on.
Thanks to Y'all's
The base map was made by "E. Sickles?" Tim must love having that name on his map.😆
Incredible two separate shell holes so close together!
In German, 'kühn' means bold, daring, or audacious.
My wife and I were just at gettysburg on Thursday for a bluegrass festival at the Granite hill campground and we left early to revisit some battlefield stops beforehand that I wanted to brush up on.
Always good stuff. Never tire of learning things regarding Gettysburg. The opponents; terrain that comes into play; local residents; et al.
Interesting! Thank you for sharing!
Tim., thank you so much for your tirelessly researched documentary narrations on this incredible moment of American history. They are like picking up a book and that is so engrossing, one can't put it down without fear of losing one's place,
Good morning! Thanks for sharing!!
Always love your videos, keep it up
My second time here today. Tks Tim!
We tend to think of "urban warfare" only as a phenomenon of modern war. Yes, some of these shells may have been errant, but the town definitely experienced street fighting; especially during the late afternoon of the first day.
Of course, the article is by me! Lol, love me some Tim Smith.
Fantastic history! Thanks
Glad you enjoyed it
Thank you for the info
thanks tim !!!!
The haircut looks good Tim! 👏👏
Really cool!
Not complaining but these videos appear bleached out. Great content!
These homeowners better hope that any original shells stuck in their walls aren't still live. (Duds welcomed.)
Are those shells live ammo?
No, they’ve been disarmed.
