  • Why on Earth would you choose a new analogue delay in 2021? Here’s why…
    Life too short for long CZcams videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
    Welcome to the show! It’s our first ride back in the saddle after a vacation so we thought we’d hit the trail in Old-School TPS style.
    Suhr, J Rockett and Mythos all launched really cool analogue delay pedals in 2021. These three range from super simple to incredibly feature-rich. So in this video we take a look at each, taking in a few classics for context.
    In case you are confused, all the pedals here have an entirely analogue signal path, except for the Strymon TimeLine which uses digital modelling to recreate those analogue sounds.
    The drives all come before the delays in the signal path, just for the record.
    Enjoy the video!

    First delay I ever bought was a Carbon Copy bright. I then spent a long and expensive journey through several fancier, more complicated, more expensive, in some cases great sounding pedals before realizing that the sound in my delay dreams was that BB sound. I am now the happy owner of a Dm2 Waza which does exactly what I want and no more. Lovely stuff.

    Good to have you back hombres! Hope the break was good. Love a good delay chat. My approach to delay has always been similar to stacking gain pedals . I’ll always have two flavours on the board. I never really jelled with big multi-delays, so it’s always two simple stompboxes. It’s been the Walrus Audio ARP-87 and a Keeley mod AD-9 (self-oscillation mod), for years now!

    Dan and Mick, check out the discontinued Decibel Eleven Time After Time delay. All analog signal with digital controls. Up to 524 milliseconds of delay. Features include tap tempo, beat divisions, modulation and MIDI. Internal trimmer to roll off high end on the repeats. All this with an ingenious preset system. Mine is simply set to left switch slapback, right switch long delay, but you can store up to 11 presets if you wish. Initial reviews dinged it for producing a volume drop when engaged. However, switching the bypass from Relay to Trails mode remedies this problem. Originally $229, you can often find them online for less than $100. It’s a sleeper!

      Have you tried the Asheville Music Tools (MOOG pedal builder) ADG-1 ? It’s fantastic, the most beautiful sounding analog delay I’ve tried. No preamp/tone coloration, has its own drive/tone and sounds amazing with an expression controlling repeats- just waves of sweet analog BBD runaway trails

      @@winstonsmith8236 Never heard of it, but looked it up and seems really cool! Thanks for the recommendation, def going to do some research on it. I've been using an HX Stomp exclusively lately and getting more experimental overall, but a truly great analog delay is unbeatable imo for everyday delay sounds

Given that hearing one of you fiddle and twiddle whilst the other picks and strums, the use/application of 'what' is possible to send to the expression pedal seems real key for me. What a wonderful episode guys. Simply loved the dive into analog delays. I’ve been hankering to get another ARDX20 but after watching this episode I’m reconsidering. The Discovery is too pricey and complicated for me but the cheaper but still pricey Clockwork really appeals to me. But holy cow, that simple Oracle just sounded fantastic. Looking forward to you guys checking out the Seymour Duncan Vapor Trail deluxe. Keep up the incredibly entertaining good work 👍😎

    One of my favorite analog delays is the first generation of the Pigtronix Echolution. Reverse delays, modulation, stereo out, long delay time and expression pedal control. Takes up a lot of real estate but sounds gorgeous. One of my favorite tools for ambient guitar !

    • @indieguy81
      @indieguy81 Před 2 lety

      The amount of real estate it takes up is probably the main reason why you don't see them in use much these days, but I agree it's a great pedal. The Diamond Memory Lane 2 sort of falls in that category too.

    So glad to have you back boys! Great show as always. Here's an observation that I made about delays, maybe I'm dead wrong, feel free to tell me :
    Analog delays with darker repetitions seem to fit single coil guitars because that naturally have less bass so the repetitions kinda emphasize the frequency that might be "lacking" a bit.
    I'm a humbucker player and I've noticed that analog delays always end up sounding a bit more muddy with my setup whereas my Dynacord tape delay and Volante always sound great because tape delay has more of a bass roll off which fits better with the charact

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  Před 2 lety +1

      Makes some sense Vincent. I guess there's a big difference in various singles and hums, but the general point that the relative tone of the delay repeats is all important in the sound is the thing. So yeah, totes!

      @@rjo8500 ha, I just traded my Volante away because I use the Oracle all the time! Volante is a great pedal but it’s not something I’m having on 80% of the time I’m playing which is firmly where the Oracle stands. Whether it’s subtle slapback or subtle 1/8 th with a few repeats for atmosphere- it’s perfect at both. The floating oscillations have been dialed in perfect as well. While it looks basic, anyone who knows analog delays will immediately notice how everything is dialed in perfectly to actually get to playing, not knob fiddlin’. It’s also the only analog delay I’ve played where there’s virtually zero tone change with the mix all the way down- that NEVER happens.

    Great show! Asa you know- I LOVE the DMM. However, I got a Boss Waza DM2- and man that thing is fat- it like adds a layer of low-end under your guitar tone. Amazing. I use it on my folky rock/ alt country board for that slap back country rockabilly thing and it is just so rich and fun to play, even at that mild, short slap setting. I love the memory man in large part because it juices your amp. In my indie band I play with an ac15 and on many of the songs I use just the DMM into the amp- no OD pedals, because it pushes the amp just enough to get that overdrive when you dig in, where the delay just melts into the sound and you're off. Truth is, regardless of the band, I don't actually use very long delays- so analog delays sound great and have plenty of delay time for me....

    The Clockwork is a piece of art visually already. Also brings to mind the 80's rack delays I recently got into. The ability to go from flanger to chorus by repeat length and to straight vibrato with depth is fun. The warmth with clarity as well. Clockwork just is way more practical, don't need two for stereo and can control it more reasonably. The nice things those rack units did was stuff like 300 and 500 ms on different sides for example, with their own feedbacks or even crossfeedback. Something that some high price digital pedals today are trying to recreate (and the beauty of the rack units' analog front).
    The Suhr's ability for wildly robot-flanger voice was really exciting change of pace. That one chord also totally made me expect Dan to play Beatles. But then he moved to modern Opeth style. These newer analog units are very nice with the functionality, the features and controls without getting too complicated. Yet Carbon Copy will still have the special place in my heart, the set and forget machine that just delivers the mojo right away.
    Today the digital has gone more towards being a modeler or simulator for all different kinds of delays.
    That Mustang art though. That would look good on the wall too.
    Btw you guys should mention in the patreon and supporting music stores part that on top of funding the show, it allows you guys to stay independent on your opinions. I believe a big part of the audience respects that part of the deal greatly.
