He mentions putting the rubber grommet on before terminating the cable. I prefer to do it this way also, but have forgotten occasionally. Ubiquiti has done a good job with their rubber grommets. They will stretch enough to push an RJ45 jack through them, so don't panic if you forget to put it on first.

I fully agree that they should offer the PoE chime as separate purchase. I ordered the wifi chime as second chime to have the sound on two floors but this is only resulting in huge connection issues losing connection all the time. So a second PoE chime would be a good solution.

Was doing a new build and already has Ethernet run to the doorbell and Ethernet run to where a chime would go. Figured some day someone would come out with this, but in the meantime I would use Ethernet as power wires.
Went to buy the PRO which I had been looking at checked the price, went and told the wife, we agreed. 15 min later came back to buy and the POE was there. Figure I might have purchased one of the first ones. Have had it for months and love it!

Adding some form of automated door lock is a must for me. While most of my house is covered by Unifi Cameras, I still use a Simply Safe system purely for the door bell and lock. I need the lock component to end my need to run two systems.

    • @b3owu1f

This is my main holdup.. they should either partner with Schlage or provide their own.. if they do add a door lock they need to make it as robust as the best on the market. That would be fantastic to have a heavy duty Unifi managed door lock.. could make it SO much easier than having to use separate apps for current locks. Plus ability to use it to turn on some lights when you unlock and its dark, etc.

Been looking at this kit to upgrade my current as well as relocate it from door frame to my outer brick as I currently get a limited view and IR washout, Had not realized the chime was POE also just assumed it to be the plug in. I wouldn't mind updating to the G4 Doorbell Pro, but I can't justify buying another doorbell haha. I had some restarting issues and support had me reset the camera, but I never figured out why it was having problems resetting and not running the chime. I do like that new chime, and it would work great in my hallway just outside my office under my bedroom AP, where I already run networking through a closet.

I really want to love this doorbell, having POE is awesome and I like the ceiling/wall mount for the chime. But three issues prevent me from purchasing: 1. The aesthetics... it's not attractive looking especially compared to the Nest doorbells. 2. No custom animations, 3. No custom chimes. Our family loves the Nest doorbell chimes and we have fun changing them for holidays or birthdays. If customizations could be added for chime & animation, I could look past the appearance.

Love my Doorbell Pro (non-POE). Unlike you I have a double front door so there is a lot of structure around it; more than your door. When I tried to cut out a square to run a new wire to my doorbell I got nothing but 2x4's (roughly as far away as you show in the video), so I had to jerry rig wire from the old doorbell to the brick where the builders had originally ran the doorbell wire but never connected it and patch the wall. (sigh)
Yes they need to fix the animation, and I wish they would come out with the lock option for our homes; granted I know they used to one with the Doorbell Pro which was only visiable on the EA USA site but its been long since removed and no follow up. (sad)

I just started with Unifi and I like their products. I really do not care if they are wrapped beautifully and their shop is real shit. It's as if they intentionally made it hard to find complete product specs or information about what products fit what use case. I tried their online designer the other day and found it doesn't support UISP products and the designer looked quite pathetic in general.
There are a few things they are doing well, but overall it's still quite painful.
Nobody except some Unifi nerds will guess that a button labelled with a big U is meant to ring a bell. Clearly the marketing people keep overruling the usability people.

Maybe important info to all Ubi users that both versions of Ubi doorbells are using internal battiers which dies after 2-3 years making doorbell devices dead and unoperational. Batteries are of course non-replaceable. This PoE device is somehow bypassing internall battery check via mini USB connctor(non-pro usb mini is hidden behind service label) and making devices to work again even with dead battey inside! At least mine works :-)

I installed my poe chime in a double J-box and it was still a PITA, nothing fits properly as far as cover plates, screw hole alignment, etc. I regret buying it. I have a wifi chime in addition to the PoE chime and it won't even alert you when there's motion at your doorbell, only when someone presses the doorbell. what would really be neat is if you could customize alert tones for smart motion and doorbell presses and also give it a silent mode on a schedule so that you can mute it, but have a super bright blue ring pulsate when someone presses the doorbell, and strobe for a certain duration when the doorbell detects motion. That way if you're up late watching tv, you can see the chime flash and not let it wake the wife, kids, etc everytime a cat walks on the porch.

it's too bad that the unifi chime (both poe and wifi) will not alert you when there's motion picked up from the doorbell camera, i mean my $99 ring camera chime does this, with separate customizable alerts for doorbell presses and motion detection. can you pull some strings or put in a good word at Unifi and hopefully we'll see a future firmware update with these changes?
