  • How to Repair Johnson or Evinrude VRO FUEL PUMP Replacing the Diaphragm Removing outboard fuel pump. The diaphragm was cracked and the motor was not getting gas and would only run if I manually pumped the fuel bulb. Stop and start, Stop and start, Stop and start.

    I have an older 1996 model 70 horsepower Johnson VRO. not currently having trouble with a fuel pump but I feel as though now I could troubleshoot one after watching your video so thanks for posting! Beautiful family and wonderful memories you're making with your children! They will remember that trip for the rest of their lives!

    have a 1999 Johnson 115hp that won't idle very long without having to push choke on and when I run it up, it suddenly just stops like it gets no fuel. after it sits a minute, i can start it and it'll run until I goose it...would that be the fuel pump?

      My VRO system just went out. When it was working the motor ran, but I had to pump the ball every 20 seconds to keep it running. I went through the hoses, connections, and checked to make sure I had the gas tank vented, checked to make sure water was spitting out, emptied out my old gas and refilled with fresh gas, checked the plugs and wires. Then I checked the pump. It wasn't horrible to work with. Probably take an hour to open it up and check it. Definitely worth the piece of mind. If your VRO is not working at all the motor will overheat and possibly be destroyed, but if it didn't get destroyed the first time it could start back up in a minute or so, when it cools. I'm sticking to premixing my fuel..... Best of luck...

      My motor shows the smoke, it's getting oil. I have a 15 gallon tank and up until this season has run fine. I don't think it's the oil. The bulb was collapsed the first time it happened, telling me it's between the bulb and tank. I replaced the bulb, the female fitting, and checked the tube into the tank, which doesn't have a filter on the end anymore (1984) Also, the engine never froze up...Today will replace the male fitting and gas line n see what that does. Ireally don't want to dig in for the fuel pump.

    I recently bought a boat with a 25hp Evinrude 1996. I noticed gaz was filling the oil tank. Would a bad diaphragm cause this type of issue?

    What symptoms did you have? I have the same engine and excessive blue smoke when starting after some days without use. Once warmed up there’s not smoke, nor when restarting while at sea. Anyone got any nuggets of wisdom?

    • @youcanfixit3721
      @youcanfixit3721  Před rokem

      Blue smoke signifies a rich mixture and too much oil is burning which could happen, but my diaphragm was cracked, so I wasn't getting my pump to push enough oil though, but symptoms could be different depending on what is wrong.

    Is the diagram what kills the engine from the kill switch

    • @youcanfixit3721
      @youcanfixit3721  Před 4 lety +1

      Fellmarine posted this on the internet - Evinrude uses «Close to Stop» kill switch principle as standard. This means that the engine kill switch shorts circuits to stop the engine.

    Did you fill the VRO with fuel before putting it back on ?my diaphragm was torn. I rebuilt mine and now out of nowhere I can not get the motor to fire off . It cranks and cranks and backfires but will never fire off. I cleaned carbs had no effect. I tried a regular fuel pump and nothing. I'm stuck. My starter just hammers it and it backfires every now and then. My starter had even started hanging up I've tried to start it so much.
