I grew up a huge Richard Petty fan! Still am, but I became a huge Bobby Allison fan after I watched him go through this accident and loose his 2 sons! The man has great character and is a American legend! I wish Bobby and his wife nothing but the best!
When Adam Petty was killed, Judy and Bobby Allison were separated. Judy went to Bobby and said "we need to help them through this ". J&B reunited (and still are) to help the Petty's through their grief! What could be more Godly than to put aside your differences to help others!?
@@ronframe387 If only it were under different circumstances.
Incredible that Bobby survived it.
You mean the wreck or the bunch of fools in the Allentown hospital?
???????????
Amazingly he still a live today 😊

Bobby Allison, a true legend of Nascar!
Bobby Allison and the hospital experience from hell
Bobby was was a great great race car driver And a very nice man I was a trucker I was at a motel in riverside cal Bobby and some other driver were testing at riverside he was eating breakfast and I when over and ask if he was Bobby Allison. Said yes sat down with him talk for about hour. Made this old Monroe GA happy was a fan from that day till right now. Thank you Mr Allison

Its great to see Bobby and Ms. Judy together. Not many people have gone thru the loss they have experienced. My heart and best wishes go out to them both.
Ms. Judy passed in 2015
@@MR-vf1fw Thanks , I knew she had but just didn't remember when I left my comment.
Thanks for correcting me. You know I never really thought about untlill after it all happened what a terrible tragedy Bobby and Ms Judy went thru. Like they say Bobby was at the top of the mountain then it all crumbled on him. I feel so bad for all he's been thru. Wish I could tell him.
That poor lady had to grieve two children
Yea she went through so much.i hate it for bobie that she is now gone an he is alone
Just glad she didn't lose Bobby.
And Bobby became a raging alcoholic too. So, she dealt with their deaths and Bobby being an alcoholic.
@@ethanweeter2732who the FUCK ARE YOU to judge this man?! FUCK YOU
I met Bobby Allison at Heidelberg Raceway in the late 60s. He was my Hero then, and still is today. No other driver could do what Allison could do! Build it, set it up, race it, repair it if necessary, and Win in it! Bobby could do it all.
And that night he took an outclassed 65 Malibu southern sportsman car and ran sixth or seventh with the higher tech late models. Pure skill
He was blessed to recover and for having such a wonderful wife to help him during his recovery...
She unfortunately is no longer with us
Bobby is one tough SOB. God bless him.
I had a TBI three months ago from a bicycle accident - NOWHERE as bad as Bobby’s but also had bruising and bleeding in the brain. Like Bobby, I have no recollection of the crash, the ride to the hospital or admittance to the ER. My first memory about an hour post-crash was seeing my wife and the neurosurgeon on my left, and the plastic surgeon on my right stitching my face up. Yet apparently after I regained consciousness at the crash site I was able to give my riding buddies my wife’s number, and speak to a friend who lived 2 doors from the location and came out to see what was going on, AND ask the other riders to take care of my bike……. it’s wild how our bodies protect us from trauma memories!!
Some of the original families of NASCAR have sacrificed so much for the sport. These men had no fear whatsoever.
So true, and now we have literally wet behind the ear babies out there racing that purposely try to wreck someone when things don't go their way
It’s a miracle he survived. I have a weird feeling that The Allison Family/Alabama Gang was cursed.
- Donnie Allison’s career-ending crash at Charlotte back in 1981
- Bobby’s 1987 crash at Dega
- Bobby’s 1988 Near-Fatal Crash at Pocono
- Davey Allison’s 1992 injuries from bad crashes
- Clifford Allison died in Michigan 1992 for Busch Series Practice
- Davey Allison died in 1993 from a Helicopter Crash
- Neil Bonnett died in 1994 at Daytona during practice
@ImThatVintageNASCARNerd you think he was cursed?
@ImThatVintageNASCARNerd but explain why are they cursed.
I don't know about cursed but they had an awful run of luck. I guess you'd call it cursed in the sense that a family of 4 different drivers all experienced some level of severe/near fatal/fatal wrecks or in Davey's case a freak accident. I think calling them cursed seems more gentle than accepting they just had such tragic circumstances surrounding some amazing highs.
I agree. And don’t forget the the off-track stuff like Bobby’s divorce and if I’m not mistaken they lost a good deal of money. I do believe they remarried, but they certainly did have A LOT of hardships.
@@zerodos_02 originally I was gonna say “The Allison Family” only. Then I thought about The Alabama Gang
Bobby's reaction when she mentions that he peed on the floor cracks me up. It's like a "You didn't have to mention that" look. lol

It's so sad this crash took away his memory of winning the 1988 Daytona 500 with Davey finishing 2nd.
What was date of this accident?
@@janicegilbert3471 June of 1988.
I'll never forget the interview with Davey after that race when he said
" I tried to pass him but he was just too strong." Davey couldn't have been any happier or prouder the way race ended.
I remember when Davey died, it seems like yesterday even thirty years later. He was my guy. RIP Davey.
Bobby was my driver ever since he was Nascar points champion in 83, I was 9 years old, he was my idol, when this accident happened I was devistated, I've never really cared for Nascar racing since that day...
Same for me after Dale left. But i chime in from time to time. The new cars are something completely different and interesting to watch it's progress.
@@katdaddy469 Same here...
I really pulled for Bobby when he was driving the Matador.
I suffered from a stroke and spinal cord injury. I ruptured my brain when I had my brain aneurysm. I’ve had five brain surgeries. I was given a ten percent chance to live up to two days. The brain surgeon told my wife to start making arrangements. That was back in 2013. I’m disabled now but I’m alive! I had to learn to walk, talk swallow. Everything!
He and Davey visited our local upstate New York track the weekend of that race on a Friday night. Accident at Pocono that Sunday. I can't remember if they ran a few laps or not. They did autographs and both my boys got signed pictures. My youngest boy was elated as the sun rose and set with Davey Allison. After leaving the track mid program they got to their plane at a nearby small airport and buzzed the track before heading south. Was deeply saddened to hear of his terrible injuries on Sunday. In my opinion the story of the Allison's is one of the saddest in not only Nascar but just plain sad. Judy divorced Bobby at one point but they fortunately remarried.
Judy is now decesed
" I was conscious,but I wasn't hooked up "
gotta love that driver lingo even in a situation like that.
Severe injuries including loss of memory but still living today. God bless him.
I had a head injury like that and it's no joke. Memory is a real issue, and emotional regulation is all but gone. It sucks, but sometimes I just act like a pissed off teenager about things and I can't help it.

I'm so glad you are still with us Bobby
I sure miss what for me were the old days with the Allison family competing in NASCAR.
For all Bobby's Wheelman greatness, somehow he's still underrated!
I know he only won the championship one time, but it was only bad luck that kept "The Leader of The Alabama Gang" from winning 4-5 championship's, nobody ever out drove Bobby Allison & I say that as a lifelong Richard Petty fan!
The hardship this Man has endured & the fact he is still kickin just speak's volume's to just how tough an individual he really is 💪
If you happen to read this Bobby, thank you sir, thanks for all the great memories of your epic battle's with my guy Richard Petty, they were truly a sight to behold 🙏
Underrated indeed. It was a different era. In 1967 I saw Bobby tow a car he had built with his own hands into Birmingham International Raceway (1/2 mile track that he cut his teeth on) and beat Richard Petty in a Grand National race (today's Cup Series) using his neighbors and cousins as pit crew. He was a mechanic, engineer, businessman, and of course an expert driver. When he finally got a contract with the big boys (Holman & Moody/Junior Johnson) he really shined, finishing 4th overall in NASCAR wins.
@@halb37 I doubt what you said not one bit! Bobby Allison was/is tough as they've ever come, but on his home turf?? LOL, practically unbeatable, not only Bobby, but all member's of "The Alabama Gang" for that matter! All BS aside, every single one of the so-called "old guy's" were tougher than rawhide & they were toughest between the ear's 💪😉

One of the top 5 most important drivers ever in Nascar!
Important? How about greatest?
These are the real heros of nascar racing
I was about 25 or so then and what surprises me is that 34 years went by in a blink.
The next 34 will go by in a half a blink.

So true
"The Allison's" in general are nascar stories of survival & unfortunately terrifying circumstances. If your new to the sport look up Donnie, Bobby, & Davie. ( What he did winning the championship was a unprecedented at the time ) #28
Davey was my boy! I cried my eyes out when we lost him 😢 but I'm really happy bobby survived that nasty crash I love all of the Allison's now NASCAR kinda sucks to the point I don't watch it anymore thanks Bobby your a true racer that will never be forgot 👍👍✌
I was there! It was my first live nascar race. That is when I became a Davey fan. How he kept checking on his dad but kept racing. And am a great bobby fan. Was able to meet them both. Great people. Also met Clifford too and I have a great picture of him. Would love to send one the his parents.
One of the greatest to ever grip a steering wheel
The hospital story is one of the best stories I've ever heard. I haven't laughed that hard in a while
I used to love it when Bobby and Donnie came to the Nashville Fairgrounds to compete with the local talent there. I’m talking 1969-1975. Great, great racing!
Anyone else reminded of "Cousin Eddie" when Bobby said "Got hit in the head by the Dr and my eyes crossed the other way".
The entire family/gang was shrouded with insane crashes and unfortunate losses.
Sure do miss those days.🙏🏻
I was there, but only saw the aftermath. The Allentown hospital he was taken to is in my home town, and it was flooded with well wishers. Bobby was great driver.
I have family that grew up around the Allison family, according to my Great Grandmama, she was Awesome too, btw. They are not cursed. They are just good people, that had bad things happen, like we all have had.
God Bless Us Everyone. 🙏
Easily one of the all time greatest nascar drivers ever.
These new guys cant hold a candle to men like this.
Bobby's face after she mentioned the pee is too damn funny. 😂
Ikr He was ahh shyt, Here we go again
I just said it was the broken leg woman! Lol
That's your favorite part isn't it honey
This where the saying comes from, “as tough as nails.”
God bless you, Bobby. And the fact that you recognized me in a crowd at Zephyrhills after so many years is a memory that I will have forever!
Judy was a good looking woman! I loved that car Bobby drove, beautiful paint scheme, the shape of the Buick regal. How the hell a Buick beat a Ford at Daytona that year is crazy, never would have bet money on it!
Wasn't that the year the Buicks were really fast if the rear bumper fell off??
What a Legend
When NASCAR was real and King of Sports
I love this brave man.
What absolute Gems these two are, especially after the traumatic experiences they’ve gone through together!! Used to run into Bobby around town & at the cruise-ins & car shows around Mooresville/ LKN & an absolute gentleman! Most other drivers nowadays not so much!
This man was & is a hero of mine...
The Allison's even just the name are and will always be a class act and NASCAR royalty
As a fan, I had the opportunity to talk with Bobby maybe 10 years ago in the pits at I think Richmond. Probably one of the nicest warmest "famous person" you will ever meet.
That man and woman are some extremely strong people
Bobby Allison founding member of The Alabama Gang well loved and respected by all in the Great state of Alabama!!! Our prayers follow you where ever you reside!
This is why NASCAR pushes for safety in their cars and on their tracks. Thankfully we don't see too many wrecks like this anymore
Now that Jimmy Spencer retired.😎
And now nascar is so hard wired on safety there’s hardly any daredevil aspect anymore
Lucky to get better and enjoy the rest of his life. Amazing really! Good for him.
GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY BOBBY ALLISON!😎 I WATCHED YOU WHEN I VERY YOUNG, YOU MADE LOVE NASCAR! I LOVE YOU MAN😗
I'm sorry that happened to you. I'm glad you can talk about it
I was so glad Bobby lived through that. Tragic to lose his 2 Sons...
These old timers were warriors!
We went to that race back went it happened. The crowd got real quiet. Everybody’s prayers was answered for a great recovery for Bobby Alison
I was also there.
I was there as a kid. This was at a time when scanners were still in their infancy so people basically had to rely on what they saw, felt (it was clear it wasn't good), and the PA announcer /MRN to provide basic updates. The fact it happened in the tunnel turn, literally about a mile away from the main grandstand (which was much smaller back then) made knowing what was going on very difficult. The quiet and then watching the helicopter flying away still resonates 35 years later. I grew up in the Lehigh Valley and wrote Bobby a get well letter.
I remember when ole boy spun up in fence at Talladega in 87, that changed everything
Yes sir I remember that
Me and my husband were there and about 100 feet from it. It shook us up so bad we left and came home to Georgia. When we got home they still had not started that race back. Restrictor plates followed soon afterwards.
It would have changed many, many things had Bobby's car gone thru the fence into the stands. We were lucky it didnt.
@@fastone371 It could have been so much worse. Many changes started happening after that day. Restrictor plates for one.
My brother had an old man with 3 DWIs cross the median at hit my brother head on. The guy that was in the back seat was sitting in the middle so he could see. He was ejected out the front windshield. That was back before every one wore seat belts. He took over 200 stiches . my brother broke the steering wheel and impacted the steering column to the chest.he waa pushing so hard on the brake pedal that it broke his ankle. leg.pelvis and hip on the left side. 64 days in. ICU in Parkland in Dallas. All the pain and suffering was caused by a drunk old man who wanted to commit suicide.and he did
one of my favorite drivers.
he was a great driver without always the best car .
I was in attendance at this race, we were watching from the top of an RV in the infield. We knew the crash was bad but not the extent of his injuries. It wasn't realized at the time that we were watching the very last race Bobby would run in and to witness his last lap. I also remember distinctly hearing after the fact, Richard Petty was having a tough time staying awake during the race, it was discovered later that his exhaust system was faulty and carbon monoxide was poisoning him. He had a crash and drove right by us on the way to the garage, which ended his race for the day. These were the glorious days of NASCAR, when cars were reaching peak speed and the teams were like brothers. Competitive but comradery usually won the day.
No one in Nascar history has drove for as many different teams or owners & as many different makes of automobiles & win with everyone of them. I grew up watching Bobby & Donnie Allison and Red Farmer run at Huntsville Speedway in my hometown & I became a lifelong fan of the entire Alabama Gang. At one time Hueytown, Al. was the epicenter of Nascar drivers. I miss those days
God damn. Bobby Allison is a true survivor. God bless him. 🫡
Damn !!! I’m soooo glad the new cars are safer than the old ones .
21 years since a death. 👍👍
I can relate. I had a TBI a year after Bobby's accident. The difference was, I was just four at the time I got hurt.
Back in the good old days of racing
Anybody ever wonders why they have those goofy-looking extensions off the seat cradling their heads nowadays, this is why. It reduces the potential impact forces in an accident like that immensely, and lowers the chance of head injuries this severe. Personally, I'm really glad we have those sorts of safety devices these days. I applaud the bravery of race car drivers, but I don't want anybody needing blood-squirting holes drilled in their head, going wall-eyed, cross-eyed, and every-which-way-eyed in between while they urinate on themselves from loss of bladder control.
Also when Dale Earnhardt lost his life to a hard crash that snapped his neck
@@artnouveau7633 Yup...after Dale's fatal crash is when they added that safety feature. It didn't even look like Dale hit that hard.
But also bear in mind that Dale smacked a solid concrete wall at almost full Daytona speed.
He's one tuff Dude 🙏
When I was a kid, he was my hero !!!!
Bobby is a strong willed guy and his wife is a strong lady who undying dedication. Bless them
