You're literally one of the least polarizing or controversial Star Wars people I've ever seen online, so I have no idea why people take issue with those videos. You really need to ignore the weirdos that post criticisms like that and just be you. You're a good dude and you will attract the audience that gravitates towards honesty and straight-forwardness. If this video isn't proof of that then nothing ever will be.
While for the most part I agree, if you dismiss criticism out of hand, you are denying your self the change to get better.

I think a lot of the criticism is from the anti-woke crowd (at least the comments in the other vids implied as much) who dislikes that he didn't dislike the same things as they do.
you have people like Mark Kern just stomping in to every fandom trying to turn everything in to a culture war, and because they're such a loud niche they drown out what is very valid criticism.

It's par for the course for Ubi Soft. There's a $120 version of their Avatar game. The solution is simply don't buy it. Just cosmetics, a mission no one will be playing day 1 anyway, a season pass. This is all stuff that will be cheaper later on. Just don't buy it

Yeah, I mean, I dont agree with all Justin's takes, but I respect the way he presents his opinions. He gives valid criticism in an even-handed way. Some of the others on the channel not so much, but Justin's great. We're not the same kind of Star Wars fans, but I like to get takes from all kinds of people.
Because there are people who vehemently abide by the false statement "everything is political" and take that to its logical conclusion. Hence why even something innocuous as a galaxy far, far away MUST make it clear which way it stands on whatever the current era problems are. Regardless of whether it makes any kind of sense to the setting proper.
Which is also why there are people that get upset with Eck over content that would've been totally a non-issue decades ago.
If I were to say something along the lines of "I like waffles," the pancake faction would rise up to try and drown out my opinion with their assumptions that I hate pancakes and that liking waffles makes me less than human.

$130 for the full game is horseshit. Not to mention, that’s not even for a physical copy, so it can be yoinked from you at any time for whatever reason Ubisoft makes up.

@@KingslayaJ Correct. They have pricing tiers; $69.99, 109.99, and 129.99 or you can pay 17.99 a month and with that you get Ubisoft’s version of game pass.
There are some deeper underlying issues with the game (and studio) and Star Wars as a whole (since before Disney).
First, it's an Ubisoft game. The studio that is famous for doing the bare minimum to be considered AAA. All the human character models look like butts, not just the main character. Almost every human in the trailers look too wooden and generic. Nothing in their designs stands them apart from an NPC within their the game itself.
Which leads into the next issue. Star Wars games have almost all been about a Han Solo-like. Dash Rendar (Han Solo but with a different model ship and robot side kick), Kyle Katarn (Han Solo with more guns and later Han Solo but also a Jedi), and now Han Solo but is a girl and has animal side kick. You can only play a smuggler with a heart of gold so many times before it gets old. It's like Star Wars can't escape the confines of it's own world where you can only either be a force user or a smuggler.
Actually those are pretty much it, you more often play a jedi, a soldier and it'd just ahead of a bounty hunter. It's not played out at all
I got angry when they said we would only have one weapon on our slot. Like wtf if im going to play has an bland human caracter than let me have more weapons. I DONT WANT TO USE THE SAME F****** PISTOL IN THIS GAME. I want to use miniguns or snipers. I know we will be able to pick up the weapons of the enemies but even then i think the only weapons they will have will be same.
This. Ubisoft's MO is like clockwork. The Micro-transactions and same engine for the past however many games is what they do. Will this look like Tom Clancy games? Yup. Will they be after your wallet even after paying $130? Oh yeah.
I do agree with some the criticism aimed at ubisoft (as a game designer for the studio, we're the first to complain, it is a very top down way of making games) and the reused narrative
One thing to take into account, that a lot of people don't know: EVERY chara design, EVERY sound, EVERY visual, EVERY decisions must be validated and greenlit by Disney
They are as protective of their IP as a mother with her newborn. Every minute details go through an insanely long validation process, so yes some story and narrative choices will look familiar or repetitive, but Disney and Ubisoft (mostly disney) do not like when a narrative does not fit into a predefined box and appeal to the broadest audience.
(and the argument: "there is an audience for game of such and such genre", accounting department does not care, investors do not care, they want the highest ROI possible)

Like-able I think isn't as important as "interesting." Because I think the Emporer is an interesting character, but not a like-able character. That said, we'll have to wait an see!

What made me not want to buy it anymore is that the game isn’t being released on steam after being available for pre order on EGS and Ubi Connect.
No steam? No thanks.
The problem is game development cost is really high nowadays. Add in license holder taking a chunk of the action and the storefronts taking even more and you have to come up with creative ways to recoup your budget. There’s a reason we see mass layoffs and studio closures after a game releases and does not hit top tier sales.
For me, the issue w the MC of Outlaws is that to me she is just too generic looking, not just her face but overall, it doesn't appeal to me, and obviously that's fine, and others are welcome to disagree w my opinions and views. I am just tired of playing as a generic looking human in a galaxy filled with thousands of species, not to mention the same companion pet trope we've seen before in JFO and JS. And ik it isn't the type of open world game I am looking for, but customization is extremely important to me. Idk I just don't see the appeal, but again that's me.
What does 'generic-looking" even mean? She looks no more generic than Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Cal Kestis. I mean, it's a realistic style game. I just don't see how uniqueness is so important. Though, in a world of mostly white, short-haired, male protagonists, then would that by default make her non-generic?

Eck I love your content. Anyone that watches regularly can tell that your intentions come from a love of the franchise, despite thumbnails or critiques or anything else. You always seem to have a very fair and interesting analysis of Star Wars content. That's why you are pretty much the only Star Wars channel that I watch every video you post.

I think a big problem is that a lot of the nasty part of the fandom letches on to valid criticism and insert their own awful takes. Discrediting the valid criticism with weird culture war conspiracies.

I appreciate the reflection and acknowledgement of nuance on your videos. There are interesting and considered critiques of games that are fun and constructive to debate and reflect on, bad faith arguments and misdirected anger get in the way of that. I think you are doing a great job. Your authenticity and subjectivity is a great characteristic and you do a really good job of making content that I want to watch when I see it popup as a recommendation and I'm never disappointed.
Definitely have been a critic about your video titles for a while (been subbed since 2019), just too similar to outrage bait sw channels sometimes, but I’m glad that you acknowledged it and I don’t think you should be too hard on yourself, I understand running a channel is also a business. Appreciate the clarification. I thought immediately when i saw the title "he's not gonna talk about the main character. That's not his style" but i get how people could get triggered and make some big assumptions. I think some people get saturated in negativity and eventually see it in everything.

My problem with Outlaws is not so much the game, but mostly with Ubishite because they have proven time and time again to be absolute Scum! to the costumers (from personal experience).
I don't think Kay looks ugly but she looks Uncanny valley like all the human characters in the game trailers. And it's so frustrating seeing how yet another game is going for realistic faces when they are FAR from it because it still requires some really heavy hardware just to run this failed attempt at photorealism when they could have gone for a more stylized look (It's animation after all!).
And my other complaint about the game itself is, why the hell does SW games now absolutely need to have a cute dog or pet like thing running next to the hero all the time??? I remember playing plenty of SW games in the past without this crap. It's infantile and it's a Guardians of the Galaxy rip off!
Basically it screams game design pr. committee.
ps. Speaking of design pr. committee, i really feel that too much SW media these is suffering from this. It's like almost no one can make a SW show or game and actually have their own vision so we end up having mostly a carefully lab grown product.

Was a good video. I remember seeing "Fans are pissed at Star Wars" in my recommended videos and purposefully ignored it because of the assumptions I'd drawn. Will go and watch it now though.

The thing I hate about this game is Ubisoft made it, thier engine is outdated and the price is ridiculous. The face thing makes me laugh but for some reason ps3 StarKiller and Kal Kestis ps4 and ps5 somehow the dev's can scan their faces. Bruh even the actors in Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls on the ps3 plus Detroit Become Human on the ps4 made by Quantic Dream led David Cage some how they scanned male and feamle faces successfully. Plus don't forget people Quantic Dream is based in Paris since 1997.

We as fans were so strong against EA with microtransactions in Battlefront 2, why can we not stand arm in arm against other predatory developers praying on fans?
Disney still refuses to work with passionate small developers unless you are AAA.
I understand that with Outlaws it seems like they are delving into lore of prequel locations, and know fans want to see more, but please recognise that Ubisoft has continually stated and shown that they are trying to milk there IP's for as much money as possible. From time savers, loot boxes, NFT's and making high tier items lockable behind a pay wall.
We as fans deserve better games and stories.

if your whole video can be spoiled in a title then it didn't need to be a video in the first place. Make it a tweet or a community post instead. If it can't be spoiled in the title, then give it a good consice title that lets people know what to expect.
We live in a world when people dont get the content they want and thus still complain when the price is out of this world. The price for this game is defiantly outrages and should be addressed nonetheless. But you cant always get what you want. Keep grinding EckhartsLadder and put your concerns out there so that one day the people that are hating can come back and reflect and have a different mindset on your content. May the force be with you .

I've got to admit, when I first saw the video thumbnail I thought "Eck no!!!" and then you immediately said "no, not that dumb garbage", and i sighed in relief. But I hadn't heard about the crappy monetization planned for this game and was genuinely looking forward and wanting to play, but I'm not supporting greedy fleecing of the consumer tactics. I'll play the game, but not till it's reasonably priced and complete. Eckhart, you're a rock star. Keep up the good work.

I'm gonna be entirely honest I'm kinda shocked people have an issue with your videos. you're one of the only star wars channels I can consistently watch for things other than lore explanations because you actually engage with any criticism of star wars and media in general in a very thoughtful way. There were times where I got worried by a thumbnail (actually funny enough, this happened with the video this video is about) but after I actually watched it I realized that you were making a genuine case about aspects of the game you were worried about and you made your stance clear
Factions compared idea sci fi insect swarm. Such as Tyranids, arachnids, Zerg, rachni, terminids.
I think this was an excellent way to answer the criticism you got, even if the criticism was off base. I love your content and think it’s so non controversial that any Star Wars fan could consume it and be like yeah his opinion is valid (even if we sometimes disagree on a specific piece of media). Been watching daily since the beginning. Not everyone grew up with the channel to really be familiar with your personality. You understand that though, it's just hard to let go sometimes of caring about what people think. Especially when you're a good person.
While the bigger issue is definitely Ubisoft’s egregious pricing model for Outlaws, I still think the Kay Vess face model controversy has merit seeing as Kay Vess barely looks like Humberly Gonzales(who she’s modeled after), which is weird that she’s the only human character who seemingly got this treatment in this game and in the Jedi Fallen Order games, which all use pretty spot on mocap tech to do the modeling and animation for their faces and bodies.
When an 8 year old game engine renders you, look good, you will not.
Skyrim and the 14-year-old Creation Engine disagrees with you very much. Check the mods.

My problem with this game is that is shouting "I suck" from light years away.
I mean for one, $130 game. Two Ubisoft. Three, they made a beautiful model of color into a very plain white woman. So, yeah. She's not ugly... But yeah. The face and animations don't do her any favors. Those are the reasons I'm annoyed with Outlaws. Mainly 1 and 2.
I thought it was a solid video with understandable opinions on the game. The fact that you got put on blast for it is crazy. I have always loved your stuff because of the level-headed nature of your videos - even in the critical ones. Hang in there man! Sorry you’ve been going through this.

You state your opinions on somethings as well as give your viewers great lore content, the thumbnails that you use aren’t clickbait, and for the most part I find that when I read them I I something of a general indicator on what the content of the video that you posted is about. You do awesome work on this channel, please keep up the awesome work.

I've never found your Star Wars opinions to be controversial or playing into the stupid culture war shit and I appreciate that. I think you're honest about what's good and honest about what isn't as good, and that is definitely a breath of fresh air, because often Star Wars discourse is just "omg it sucks because X person" and they refuse to watch with an open mind and would rather be angry. Hey Eck, been a long time viewer, I am super into star wars, and you are basically my main hub for star wars news and lore vids, but I don't know anything about you, I don't have twitter, I am not into all this drama stuff, I basically pop into your channel for the updates reviews and lore, then go on with my life, so maybe my perspective is valuable since I am out of that drama sphere.
From my perspective, your titles and thumbnails are the best way to market your videos, they are intriguing, they give an idea as to what the video is going to be about, and they are in line with the actual content, you are playing the algorithm in the best way imo, without resorting to Mr. beast surprised face yellow text thumbnails, I don't see an overall problem with your method, and I think people who do just don't like the way the algorithm works, which is understandable, but not a problem that begins or ends with you.
As for the whole Star Wars Outlaws thing, When I first saw the thumbnail, I did think "oh is this about the anti-woke stuff?" that was a definite implication I got from it, but I assumed that you were going to talk about something more important, because even though I am a casual viewer, anyone who has seen even a couple of your videos would know you are not in line with that kind of thinking, and in fairness you did address that the video was NOT about that. If you want input from a casual viewer, yes I did get an implication that you were going to talk about the anti-woke stuff, but I assumed you weren't going to give it any legitimate air time, and that there was an actual problem with the game.
You said that there isn't this political tilt with your Halo criticisms that you experience when you criticize Star Wars, and to me that makes perfect sense, because as I am sure you know, Star Wars has been social and political commentary from its inception. George Lucas has been pretty clear what inspired him to make the rebels the good guys and what the Empire represented. I am not saying Halo isn't political or doesn't have effective social commentary, it does, but the overall story is not specifically rooted in that, where Star Wars has always had that edge to it. I am also not saying you have to be political to like Star Wars, or that liking Star Wars is taking a political stance, but I think that Star Wars will always carry that baggage with it, and people know this, even unconsciously, when they make commentary on the franchise. Seeing as Disney, a company that has been thrown (rightly or wrongly) into the political zeitgeist, now owns and makes Star Wars, an inherently political piece of media, definitely fuels the fire. You as a content creator around this media might have to remind people of this reality when they try to highjack this franchise for their camp's belief systems, I think this is where the magnifying glass focused on you, I don't even think it was about the clickbait, it was about the implication that you were going to take a proverbial "side" in this tug of war over Star Wars.
You do a very good job and I think by and large make good videos. I think the image and name pick is like the cover of a book and may not represent what is in the video itself, hard to get right 100% of the time. Hang in there!

I use to watch other channels but they delved into culture or other things, you strayed away from it and strived to stay positive. Other channels like to clickbait or go off into the deep end, etc.

The title and thumbnail did actually confuse me because I was like "is Eck mad about a fem protag's face what's going on what planet is this" since it seemed so out of character but then I watched and it was quickly clear that it was about monetization, I get why people may have been mislead on the subject but it's frustrating to see how far people were willing to go in their claims when they clearly hadn't actually seen what the substance of the video was about. So I guess mainly similar to how you felt overall
Just a couple minutes in and I get you Eck. I have had modest success with my channel and since then a small amount of trolls. I had one commenter the other day demand that I narrate my videos (which I normally do) but this one was a 'capture-the-video-after-the fact' kinda situation and the first part is just gameplay, but the demand got my goat. I blasted him. Another commenter called me on it, but it fell under the heading of constructive criticism so I thanked him for it. Haven't from either which maybe a blessing in disguise.
PS Eck: I am at the end of your video and I believe you are being too hard on yourself. I too use YT thumbnail although more often then not I use the thumbnail that the PS5 creates when starting to record a video. If someone chose to attack you - and I mean not being rude but actually attack your character - over a single video (even if they watched the whole thing and that's a big if) that is on them. But I get it. You come across as a decent person so I am going to guess that you are, and those of us who are decent take this stuff personally. We feel that we are at fault some how. I'll paraphrase a comment I got on my channel: Don't. You'll just drive yourself crazy. ;-) PS: It's harder to do than say.

My personal opinion: I think THIS is the game where Ubisoft is done taking the little inches that we, the customers, have been letting them get away with. From the blatant differences between Vess and her voice actor/character model ( because yes, she is both) to the insulting game price predation, and even the racist and sexist remarks of Community Manager Shauna Jones and her, to my knowledge, not being fired or issuing a public apology, Star Wars Outlaws is where Ubisoft attempts to take the mile.
You know the character model doesn’t have to look like the character, right? It’s for movement tracking.
@intergalactic92 This is also very true. Kratos, Cortana pre-H4, the list can go on, but when the Voice Actor/Actress, Mocap Actor/Actress, and the character model are the same person, then there is no excuse, especially in 2024.

there is a small very loud minority of people that tends to click on videos that upset them (titel and thumbnail) just to comment on their assumptions

My interest in Star Wars tends to fluxate. Sometimes, it's the coolest thing ever and gets all my attention. Sometimes, I kind of just ignore it. Regardless of my feelings towards it, you're the only Star Wars CZcamsr I consistently watch because (as you said) your videos feel like I'm just hanging out with my homie who is a giant Star Wars nerd.
