- From the Archives is a series where we explore unique instruments and items from our company archives. In this new episode, Paul Reed Smith and Marc Quigley discuss early PRS 12-string designs and a special 8-String fretless bass. Be sure to hang around for the end of the episode where PRS Product Specialist Bryan Ewald takes all three guitars for a spin.

This is like Christmas for me.
The 8 string bass (double courses) should make a comeback, they have a huge sound.
Amazing. I was lucky to see David Henning of Big Wreck at a launch gig, smaller club, with his 12 string bass. Just an incredible show, really one of the most moving band performances I’ve ever been to in over fifty years of shows. If I remember right it was a 3x4 course 12 bass, looked like more than one amp for him back there.
Hagstrom still makes them, Got one last year!
@@MilesTippett was it rather expensive!
I think I spent about 500 bucks on eBay
If only there were some way to give the treble strings a separate output to a guitar amp.
I'm glad I stayed till the end! Wow.
I'm glad I skipped to the end

That's by far the best looking bass PRS has ever done.
Agreed!
YEAH
That color, that neck, that HEADSTOCK
@@salottin Yep. I find the basses don't look like anything special, like the classic look the guitars have. This bass does. I bet if they released a fretted version, it would totally sell.
“Hi, this is Bryan Ewald with PRS Guitars and today I have some absolutely killer models to demo. They’re all very unique, very beautiful in their own way, but the one thing they have in common, if you look closely, is that none of them are for sale. So enjoy and keep dreamin’.”
Man, that outro tune 🔥
That song at the end was just fantastic. Peter Frampton vibes
That bass guitar sound. That bass guitar riff. Gave me goose bumps. I looped it fir a half hour.
You should make this more often. Not only it allows to learn more about the PRS history and guitars, but also it’s a good way to document memories from the man himself. We don’t have much about Leo Fender, Ted McCarty and such... so it’s good we can know more about Paul R. Smith.
This project is really cool. I love when companies recognize the importance of their history.
That groove at 8:18 🔥
Was that Bryan playing at the end? Boy did it sound good! Incredibly musical!
Brian’s always wearing flannel lol
Yes. both to playing and wearing flannel. And thanks Avi
@@BryanEwald awesome groove on the bass, well played, thanks!
@@Spidouz 🙏
Speaking of that bass, I've got to know...was the grit in your tone achieved from the amp eq using distortion or from the pickups in the bass?! I'd love to know how that bass was set up ( type of pickups and electronics and the amo settings used) the tone was amazing. Pleasant to this drummer!
that 8 String bass Sounds WICKED and MEAN 👌
I remember seeing Cheap Trick at an outdoor concert. I was probably 100 yards from the stage and that 12 string bass was punching a hole in the sky. Felt like front row
Pleeeeease release this bit at the end as a piece of music or a stand alone video, haven't heard such great music in a while
... Amazing instruments of course (needless to say)
I second this motion. Bryan, we're begging you!!!
Having Bryan demo the models discussed is a great add to this series.
Love the jam at the end.
And the bridge engineerings.
Wow - I’ve watched all of the archive videos, skipping around, and avoiding this one because it seemed less interesting to me.
Wow was I wrong! The song at the end using these three instruments is by far the coolest thing in all of the archive videos so far.
Oh man, that ending jam is great.
What an absolute beast of a bass tone! Love it! And that 12 string! 😯
Really glad I watched to the end.
Best youtube video I've seen in a while
Glad you plugged in that bass, and that 2nd 12 string is gorgeous with the signature headstock.
I didn't know I needed an 8 string fretless bass until now.
The jam at the end was very tasty!
Brian’s tune at the end of the video was glorious, thanks Brian!

Coolest demo song by far

I have a 74 Washburn B20 8 double course and I love the sound it has
That PRS bass is so beautiful!!!
I'm a new bass player, been at it for about a year and before that played trombone for about 40 yrs. The tone of that fretless Bass is amazing, just so smooth and deep (of course a lot of that comes from the fingers playing the instrument) I can only imagine what it must have sounded like booming out of some SVT driven speakers live! Like all PRS built instruments, just as stunning to look at as I dream it would be to play.
Why did you switch to bass after so long I’m just curious(been playing for 4 years now)
@@GoldenBoyDims Hi, I lost my right leg below the knee 4yrs ago. I can't drive at the moment which keeps me from my community band rehearsals, although I do still manage to get there a couple times a month. I haven't given up my Trombone, I just wanted something different to do that kept my hands and fingers moving (I have arthritis setting in and playing Bass is actually a really good form of therapy!). Thanks for responding, I hope the answer satisfies your question, and the best to you and I hope your enjoying playing the Bass as much as I am!!
Great sound from that Eight string Bass, Like the Jammin´ ...Mike Oldfield wibes!
That bass sounds amazing!
Make a 12 string again... I’ll buy one!

The early basses are so beautiful. Sometimes I wish they would bring them back.
THOW US EVERYTHING FROM THE ARCHIVES 😭
Fascinating! Would love to see the origins of the Singlecut models (yes, including the aftermath with big ‘G’) and leading on to Tremonti’s first signature.
That bass is WICKED!
