Wow! I found this by accident - my old invention from the sixties. The video is quite accurate and I had no idea the instrument had spread that far and that high. Funny thing is that the U.S. Patent Office refused to grant a patent because it "wasn't novel" and that it used the same principle as the twelve-string guitar, but Sid Hack from Univox was ethical enough to pay royalties on the first 500 without having it patented. But that was it. Another thing not mentioned is that Hagstrom (which went out of business and was later bought back by others) gave me a free eight-string which was later stolen in NY along with a pre-CBS Fender Precision Bass. I'm still in communication with Al Kooper, who recently was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame..

🤯..."Wow!" is exactly right! I can't get over how small this world is! It's an honor to make your acquaintance via CZcams.
I can only take credit for doing an insane amount of digging to find out more about you and the creation of the 8-String Bass. Most of what I said in this video was taken from Wikipedia but because I felt like a bit of plagiarist, I decided to add a little of my fake journalistic approach to it. I hope I pronounced your last name correctly. This is actually an excerpt from a video I posted demoing an ESP 8-String bass. When that video didn't gain a lot of traction, I pulled this piece out and gave it a separate video because I wanted people to know more about this.
My desire to learn more about you led to me learning more about Al Kooper but I'm deeply touched that you found this video. You deserve acknowledgement for your contributions to the music world. I am all too familiar with watching my former musical comrades go on to much higher critical acclaim and I'm happy for them, but once again, I am even more ecstatic that you found this video. If you ever want to tell more of your story you have an invite to tell it here anytime.
      Thank you for reaching out!

Amazing job, my friend....what a voice! That bass tone was sick, too... Bravo.

It's entirely possible that Lemmy had the bass refinished, he did do some modifications to his instruments from time to time like putting thunderbird pickups in or the fact that one of his rics had a maple fretboard which is not a stock feature.

Great stuff PRJ. I don't have knowledge of Lemmy's bass. I did meet him once. He gave me a beer then tried to set light to my jeans. That's Lemmy for you 😅

That would be Tom Petersson's idea in the early 70's . I believe he asked the people at Hamer guitars to make him one!!!!! 👍

Emory Gordy can be seen playing a Hagstrom 8 with Emmylou Harris on the Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976. He seems to have only 4 strings on it though. czcams.com/video/hkatDdCZkYU/video.html Good view of the bass at about 2:55. In addition to playing in Emmylou's Hot Band, Emory Gordy has played with lots of other folks, including a dude named Elvis.
I own a prototype for the Hagstom HB-8 reissue. It sounds cool, but weighs only slightly less than the Titanic (out of the water).

Was it Hendrix's 8 string Lemmy used?

In Sweden in 1986 I encountered a really ugly bass that had 8 strings, and stereo, and an automatic damper! It was so weird and ugly and cheap but I was broke.
IIRC correctly it kinda looked like a Rickenbacker, but that should have been expensive. And I can't find even a picture of an 8-string stereo Rickenbacker. But hearing that Univox imported Hagström to the US, and they also imported those Rickenbacker copies from japan?
Maybe they had a few 8 string stereo basses made? They definitely made Univox stereo Rickenbacker copies. Someone might have converted it to 8 string later.
Ah well, I'll never find that bass again, so I will never know. 😀

Man, I really dropped the ball on mentioning Joey De Maio! You're the second person to point this out this month! I wish I had paid more attention to Manowar instead of Mötley Crüe. Joey De Maio is a MUCH better bassist that Nikki Sixx but I have to recognize Crüe as being one of 5 bands that led me into the world of Metal.

@@progrockjockNo worries, it's just seemed a bit obvious to mention them. I know they are not one of the most popular bands but Joey was one of the first to play 8 string on a record. I enjoyed your video anyway!

I am embarrassed to tell you that I didn't know much about Joey De Maio until you mentioned him. Another guy who saw this video mentioned Joey De Maio again today and it reminded me of you. I should have been a bigger fan of Manowar when I was listening to lots of Metal back in the 1980s but I was quickly swept up by Thrash Metal & the Big 4 along with many other groups like Nuclear Assault, Testament and Death Angel. Either way, I thank you and the other guy for mentioning Joey De Maio & Manowar today! You've turned me into a new fan of the band. Also, I had no idea Michael Angelo Batio was now an official member of Manowar! I remember him only from Nitro.
      Keep shredding, man!!
