The Differences Between F1 and Indycar (Cars, Drivers, Sensation...)

- As a former Formula 1 and current Indycar driver I wanted to share more about the differences between these two motorsports.
Sensations, ergonomics, speed, skills from the drivers : Indycar and Formula 1 are actually pretty different as a driver.

I loved when you said "In f1 you get Plan A, Plan B, Plan B. And for other teams even more" we all know that the smile was for Ferrari xD
X, Y, Z, AA, AB...LOL some of their strategy calls though this year got hilarious on team radio, plan F? What do you think?!?!?!? Not quoting but I got a chuckle out of just the wording.
@@danphilip10 "plan QZ" "WHAT??" "we are checking"
@@rockandrollrockandrollrock6930 do you want plan A3B4, question?
Wow two plan B? That’s gotta be confusing
McLaren pulled out Plan G at Spa but that might’ve just been making fun of Ferrari too
''Happy to be a live and happy to be racing'' gives me goose bumps every time.
Grosjean mannaging to get himself out of that burning wreck didn't only spare his life but also spared us fans from a horrible traumatic experience.. 😅
Thanks Romain, You are a fckn LEGEND!
Watching it live (I would say even more as a French as he was the one we were looking closely during the race) and hearing the French commentator (who is Romain's best friend) crying was also quite of a traumatic experience 😅
@@Syl31tls I'm in the USA, and believe me not as bad as what you describe, but it was horrible for us to watch too. I think I remember they mentioned they had changed the jumpsuits to a specification that was MORE fire retardant than the previous ones: 20 seconds instead of 10. As far as the gloves they hadn't gotten the new specification, so that was a contributing factor in his hands getting burned.
In any case, I'm sooooo happy he's alive and well, AND racing. Good for him!!!
Totally agree, lovely man, those seconds before He came out are etched into my memory in real time. So happy to see him being back and loving racing again.
"The man that walked out of fire" is truly a legend 🔥😎👌
For the past 17 years in a row, the IndyCar Championship has come down to the final race. IndyCar is always exciting to follow year in year out, and the racing is so close.
I really just started following Indycar, I only live 25 minutes from Barber, been going to the Barber race the last few years, absolutely love it,if you get a chance, get to Barber,it’s a beautiful facility.Fell in love with Indycar.
Won't be this year lol
Drive to survive got me into open wheel racing, but Indy car is a much more exciting series. in the 4 years I have watched F1 only 2021 was a truly entertaining season.
I've been an F1 fan for 30 years or so, been to over a dozen GPs live and honestly in the last few years I watch way more Indycar. The racing is awesome, drivers aren't PR robots and the old school tracks deliver so much fun.
This is the best explanation I've heard of the differences between Formula 1 and Indycar racing, and put things into perspective. Merci, Romain!
well he’s got the experience to back up his opinions, it’s the least you should expect from grosjean
I'd like to see indycars around Monaco. I feel like they would thrive and be fantastic racing to watch!
wow never thought about it! they would put on a great show
A dream. They would never.
Just watch F2 then, they are about as fast.
@@KoeiNL Indy, and F2, isn't about being as "fast" as F1. They are both spec series.
@@easytos I said he should watch F2 at Monaco instead of wishing for IndyCar at Monaco. F2 = IndyCar in terms of speeds on non-oval tracks.
Thank you for the F1/ Indy car comparison. I've followed F1/Grand Prix racing for 70+ years, but have become soured on it by F1's rejection of Andretti/Cadillac's bid. Since childhood, I've dreamed of a real American F1 effort and to lose it over politics is too much, so I'm trying to learn Indy car racing at this late date. Back ground stories about Indy car are most helpful as is watching the races. I'm rooting for you, glad to see you take on ovals.
Very well said !
A moment of lucidity.
Keep on dreaming, there zero chance of a yank team ever doing more than wasting F1's time.
Like Ford did, uh. Surefire way to not get beaten is to not let others play.
Argentine Ricardo Juncos is in Argentina showing off the Indy car he owns. People are amazed at every exhibit.
Next Sunday he will be at the Santiago del Estero circuit. It is an excellent opportunity to add enthusiasts to this exciting sports activity.
I always look forward to hearing your thoughts. You are humble in a way that few guys in your field are. Ever since those few seconds when the camera switched away and i just screamed and my held my breath, I feel much more invested in you. Its like we all get to watch you get your second chance and we all want it to be amazing
Your videos are always great, Romain. I slept on your career back with Lotus and the start of Haas so I never realized how good you really were to get such good finishes in those cars, we're glad to have you in America and in Indycar.
Yeah, the later years with Haas were not so good for him or Magnussen. But, looking at how things are now, it's really clear that it was the team.
lol he was one of the worst drivers on the grid :D and that's why he drives indy now xdd no formula 1 driver dreams of quitting f1 and going to indy Xdd
@@pnusern not really true
We live in a world now where money matters a lot. Drivers are expected to deliver on talent and experience, while being young, and also contributing major sponsors. Some drivers, like Lance Stroll, Latifi, or, you know... Nikita Mazepin... Come in on money alone. I would say Romain was a very good driver on a good day, but the Hass car certainly made it difficult to have a good day.
@@pnusern he was actually a very fast driver on his day when everything goes right it's difficult to say how good he was as the cars he drove were normally dog shit, other days he was a solid mid pack. He was a mid pack driver with some special days. He was definitely not the worst driver.
@@benclimo461 yeah haas wasn’t great but lotus that he drove was actually decent as Kimi proved. He was never able to outclass even his teammates so I’d imagine he would not be a world class driver even if given a proper car
Both great series. Heck, I'm now watching F1, Indycar and NASCAR.
I'm a F1 fan since 5th grade but the Indy500 is my fav race.
@@majorgrub1730 bucket list for me. I've been to IMS for NASCAR Indycar race weekend but I've never watched oval race there. The 500 looks insanely fast on TV can't imagine in person. One day very soon!
Fórmula E > NASCAR
Thank you Romain! Long time fan since watching you since your DAMS title win in GP2. This explanation is THE best I have heard so far from anyone who has experienced both. I thank you sir!
You described the Indycar car exactly like what I always try to achieve with my setups. Oversteery on the entry, understeery midcorner, and composed on the exit. I struggle a lot with cars that are understeery on the entry and oversteer on the exits, but my brother (who is faster than me, don't tell him) is the exact opposite, he wants the car to oversteer on the exits.
Romain, Thank you for the time and giving your insights. It is great hearing your comparisons between the two open wheel series.
Very interesting insight about low speed vs high speed corners in the cars.
Thank you Romain! Would you consider doing a short video in even more detail on exactly how you drive an Indy Car through corners for the racing geeks and amateur competitors among us? How do you manage the oversteer to understeer transition for example.
Merci pour la vidéo ! Trop cool le retour d’expérience !
You got me to subscribe in this video you are one of the only people to be able to accurately tell the differences between F1 and Indy that i can truly believe! Thank you for the great content!
The editing of your videos is flawless. Good stuff, Romain.
it's always interesting to hear the differences between the two series especially from someone who has experienced both. I think they're both good in their own ways
F1 is better
How ? Driving in an oval for 2 hours? Go watch f1 in Monaco
@@kmontgomery27 You'd be surprised how few ovals are actually in the Indy calendar.
Indy cars are inferior in every way.
@@Envycolt They aren't tho
Thanks for that candid look into both the cars and the series,Well Done!
Glad Romain is enjoying the United States and INDYCAR. I want to know what are some of his bucket list items for the United States, like 24 hours of Daytona or watching the 500, etc.
Wassup Romain love the content mate. Keep killing it🔥🔥
I got to attend the Indy Car race in Toronto this year and I was amazed at how close the cars could on such a narrow track! Also it was pretty impressive to see the cars just handle some pretty gnarly bumps without much issue
Toronto is by far one of the toughest street circuits too. Great place to see old school CART style racing.
Thank you, for this video! Loved the breakdown on the differences. Very interesting.
Love to see you smiling Romain! You totally deserve it and happy to see you fighting in the top at Indy :D
Love Romain, great analysis of the differences between my 2 favourite series, love indycar for its simplicity and close racing, I love F1 for my inner nerd, a happy balance I say
Keep racing hard Romain. I’ve been a fan of yours since your Lotus years.
Super interesting video! Thanks for putting it together and sharing with all us motorsports fans!
Another great video! Love to hear the differences
Amazing commentary. I want more of these! Remain is a true gentleman of the sport!
Hi Romain! I'm pretty new to the world of Indycar and been watching your F1 vs Indycar videos to learn more. I was thinking if it would be possible to make a video on how different the tyres are from F1 and the tyre life between them. Thanks for the content!
Seriously thank you for doing this explanation. Followed Indycar for years and recently started following F1 and watching DTS made me wonder. Seeing you transitioning into Indycar has been awesome, hope you have many years of success here in the states.
I grew up watching NASCAR, Grand Am/IMSA and Indy, started actively watching F1 when Haas started. I'm loving seeing you run in Indy, always so exciting!
Thanks for giving us the perspective of someone who's done both series. I'm so happy for you that you're enjoying IndyCar and the US!
Thanks for the video. Nice to hear your perspective on this.
I'd be curious to hear what future advancements you'd like to see in each sport. For example, I'd love to see active aero come into play in Indycar since there's less set up changes you can make. As the track rubbers in, you would start to see some changes from teams in the midfield
Great content! Glad to find your content
he said IndyCar is tougher racing. that's all you need to know on why it's better 🏁 and yeah i live in Indy 😄
Bravo. I grew up on Indy car in the 1960-1970s, and then discovered F1 in the late 90s. They both have their own character and you've captured it brilliantly.
Thanks for the video!
Great video Romain, very entertaining to watch, take it easy on the beauty filter though 😄
I've started viewing F1 as the pinnacle of car development for motorsport, with excellent drivers behind the wheel, but Rally as the pinnacle of motorsport due to the purity of what's Rally is.
Rally is the most overlooked when it comes to the conversation of the best racing drivers ever.
How would you recommend getting into rally?
@@pawrestlingchamp As a fan? Go watch some onboards- Loeb has some wonderful angles of Pike's Peak, Block is a legend, Vatanen's "Dear God" moment is beautiful. As a driver? Get a car with a roll cage, wear a helmet, show up with someone as crazy as you to be your navigator, have fun.
Wow, very informative, no one else does this, thanks!
Very insightful, thank you!
Keep shining love watching you race!
Que grande Romain. Eras mi ficha a la que apostaba p las carreras atrás. Lindo video, gracias por las apreciaciones de las diferencias.
Wow, what a nice guy! Great explanation of the differences between Indy cars and F1.
Great video Romain!
Simple answer is that F1 is a manufacturing series where the racing is about manufacturers building unique cars to compete. Indycar uses a standard chassis and spec components for most of the car, so the competition is more in setup and driving, not manufacturing. Sure there are the technical differences where F1 is more advanced and expensive. But the biggest is just the concept, manufacturers series vs drivers series.
Well said
Merci Romain! Vive le difference - formula une et IndyCar! Thank you for all the great videos you have posted since coming over to IndyCar. This one is especially great since I have been a fan of both F1 and IndyCar for many years - although I stopped watching Indy during much of the 2000s until ChampCar and the IRL finally reunified IndyCar! Good luck next season and thanks again for such a great video.
Favourite driver followed you very closely in F1, glad you're still going for it and having success in Indy.
RG8, je reste admiratif devant ton talent multi-facettes, expliquer simplement les différences entre les deux catégories le tout dans un anglais parfait.
Et avec le sourire,
Que Dieu te garde. ☮☮
I love your perspective videos. I'm a big fan of F1 and Indy. I used to be more an Indy fan but I find they market it in more of a Nasscar way now and I don't care for that. I love in F1 the cars of a team look the same. I also like that they limit two cars per team. Indy team cars used to look the same. I do like that Indy isn't a constructors championship but I did like when they had a choice of engine and a choice of a couple different chassis. That really made for interesting combinations. I get that it's all about advertising dollars and keeping costs down but it does hurt the product. Great video
You are the coolest guy on Indy grid, I'm so happy for you to enjoy your time racing there :)
Great video!
Great video! You’re such a nice guy!
I've always liked you Romain, thanks for the video
I watch both series so I find these comparisons very interesting.
I feel that your more free, more happy, living since your accident.
Something has been freed,
More confidence, more inner peace, more joy.
That’s cool to see :)
And thanks a lot, it’s very intresting (et instructif, je sais pu comment on dit en anglais)
RIGHT?!
The Phoenix! I saw you live in Indy 500 and took a bunch of pictures from behind the pits when you would pass by. Long day but you know what, I saw you live and it was fun. I'm glad I went.
I am so happy for Romain. Keep enjoying what you do. And thank God for saving you on that fateful night in Bahrain. ❤
Thank you, finally an in depth analysis from a person with credibility.
Thanks again and best of luck!
Another great video Romain. I have to say, I was watching a video the other day on F1 penalty points and the Gasly situation and unsurprisingly Spa 2012 came up. Watching again I still don't think you came close to deserving the blame that was heaped on you, or the race ban. It was a first lap, first corner incident and you really didn't do anything wrong. It was just too many cars to fit into the corner. I felt that way at the time too but the mob had spoken. Keep up the great racing.
I kinda wish F1 was more like Indy.. It feels like the drivers dont have as much to do with the racing, as the amount of money and tech that is in the cars.. I mean there are still the top dog drivers, and you can tell, But I really miss the old days when it was motors and a wheel..and the best drivers won the races! I still love both Indy and F1, just feels like Money has seriously changed the sport. Thanks for the Video Romain!!!
Much, Much respect for all F1 & Indy drivers. You guys are a different breed!
Roman thank you for the input great information and exciting on the cars work. Àlso you in 2023 will get that first win good luck be safe God Bless
Happy to be alive, very important point.
F1 : "Uhh, can you post a source?"
IndyCar "Lmao, can you post physique?" *flexes upper body muscles*
love watching both, and all racing
I just wanna say as a new fan of F1 who also started watching IndyCar, this video was my introduction. Thanks Romain Grosjean 👌🏎️
Glad Romain is still thriving and even doing good in Indycar. Seems like a nice guy. Good luck!
Thank you Romain. The way you describe the always-attacking driving style in indycar really resonates with me, as a huge diehard f1 fan. Glad you are alive and enjoying life. Indycar is still the pinnacle of global motorsports.
Lol, no it's not.
Happy you're alive too, my dude 👏
“Happy to be alive…”. Yeah, no doubt. We’re happy to still have you in the planet. Thank you For the insights!!
Really interesting- thank you 🚗
After chatting with you at Portland, I’ve decided to get my PPL, also! We have to catch up to Chris and his 747 qualifications!✈️👊🏻😂
Love your videos, Romain. They’re always different. Always fun. SO happy to have you in the States, brother. Truly grateful to get to chat with you and support your career. Thank you, brother!
Awesome sauce, Bro!!! You have a great attitude/energy. One question, and please forgive me as I'm not throwing shade, but what is fun about driving an oval? I like circuit racing, but can't understand the allure of ovals..,
Thank you for the information. Few slides would have made it more interesting.
Great attitude!
Last indycar death was from getting hit with debris. The aero screen would have saved Justin Wilson.
That was very informative. I prefer Indy racing. F1 has way better social media and I attribute that to a younger demo of the drivers, but that will be changing as long the young stars stay put. I remember when Colton first joined the Indy series he looked more aggressive than the other drivers, but now all the young drivers are as aggressive as he is, and I like that. I hope Romain has a good 2023.
I always enjoy your perspective on the two series. I think it's a shame that some of the Indy car drivers are not allowed to drive in F1 even though they have proven themselves under very stressful competition. Thanks for sharing your views. I wish Indy car would get into the 21st century and put power steering in their cars. If NASCAR can have power steering then Indy Car should to,
Great video
Hey Roman. I¸m glad to see you¨re happy driving Indy. ''Happy to be a live and happy to be racing'' 💪💪
Love you Romain ❤ 8i love your videos!
I hope you’re still driving for IMSA - Le Mans is next month. I hope to see your GTD PRO car there! Good luck at Indy!
I really hope you are well.
Thank you sir!

Easily the best comparison I've come across...
Good vid dude! I read years back, JV's book, and he described it as F1 is quicker around corners and the CART car was faster. Can't remember the HP back then, or if he was taking oval speeds as Faster?
The old CART cars had lower drag and downforce, but were pushing north of 900 horsepower. While an F1 car would beat a CART car around Monaco or Brazil, they'd get absolutely slaughtered at a track like Monza.
not only is it cool that my life was number 420. but this video is awesome! got mad respect for acknowledging the pass on Jimmy Johnson and The corkscrew was a big questionable from 2021. and it did make for great tv! thanks for all you do looking forward to seeing you perform well next year in Indy car. a season can't come soon enough.
☮️❤️🎵🌍🏁

Great Loved this !!!
There's no doubt that the Indy Cars are more simplistic but as Romain pointed out they're not easy to drive and they're still fast and fun to watch. Plus when you think about it, the (supposedly) 20 best drivers on earth are in F1, and there's a LOT of great drivers around the world who get to fill a seat in an Indy Car. The talent level there is outstanding.
Romain do you think DRS or Push to pass is a better solution for good racing and would something like push to pass work in F1?
I always liked Romain - glad he's enjoying his Indycar career...
I know you probably get tired of hearing it, but I am happy you are alive also.
You the man Romain!
If you'd still like an explanation I can give it.
