This is the exact reason why I got into Vinyl! My first colored vinyl was a white vinyl with a blue splatter on it. That's how my vinyl collection started.

  • @Electroniczdoodz

I started my vinyl collection in February. My favorite vinyl in my collection are the colored ones I have. The colored ones I have in my collection are : Halestorm’s 10th anniversary edition of their first album (which is actually a 2 LP version. 1 LP is blue, the other one is yellow). Stitched Up Heart’s latest album “Darkness” which is a solid red vinyl, The Rolling Stones Greatest hits album “Honk” which is a double album with 2 blue LP’s, In This Moment’s “Blood” album has a blood red LP, and then I have Lacuna Coil’s album “Karmacode” which is also a dark red LP. I’ll be getting In This Moment’s latest album “Mother” which was released in March which isn’t released on vinyl until Thursday in the mail. The cover is “lenticular” and the 2 LP’s are solid red. I do want have a wider variety of colored vinyl other than red in the future, I just haven’t found any that are in other colors that I like. I want to get New Year’s Day’s “Unbreakable”which is tricolored I think. The rest of the vinyl in my collection are the standard black records. I have all 9 Led Zeppelin albums, a Billy Joel album, The Rolling Stones “Let It Bleed”, 2 SuperTramp albums, a John Lennon Album, and an E.L.O album. I think that’s it though.

Less than a week ago, I learned that single-color vinyl can be turned into marbled vinyl. I’m not sure how, exactly, but it definitely can happen, and with zero damage to the disc!
Back when I was about 13, I bought the brand new (at the time) Grand Funk Railroad album ‘We’re An American Band’. I was so impressed with the clear yellow vinyl on which it was pressed that I went back to my favorite Be-Bop Record Shop and bought the single, which was the exact same color. About 20 years after buying that record, I sold my Technics 1200 turntables and my mixing board and shoved my racks of record albums into a closet. I kept my two racks of 7” singles on a shelf, on display, as a kind of reminder of my former life as a deejay.
Fast-forward to 2020 and I’m buying new turntables and putting together a home deejay studio, so of course I pulled out those old racks of albums and started listening to some of the records for the first time in over 20 years. When I pulled out my copy of ‘We’re An American Band’ I was stunned! It’s no longer a clear yellow vinyl but a mottled pattern that looks very much like splatter or marbled vinyl. It looks like a mix of yellow, burnt orange and black. Quite beautiful, actually. But I was worried what it would sound like. No need to worry, it turns out, because the record sounds just as good today as it did the day I bought it. What a relief that was!
The single version, pressed on the same clear yellow vinyl, is still clear yellow and sounds as good as the album. I guess the difference must be that the album would have been exposed to more heat over the decades it was in storage. Although it was never stored outside the house - never away from air conditioning - it was in a closed closet and so would not have been kept quite as cool as the single, which was on a living room shelf.

I'm a beginner in vinyl collecting and don't have a turntable yet, but my small "collection" (if you can call 6 records that), contains a pack of 2 white records and one transparent red vinyl. I'm also looking to purchase a Hollow Knight Piano Collections record set, which has a really interesting look - black records with a clear splatter in the middle. The music on them is more important to me though. :)

  • @gdore15
    @gdore15 Před 4 lety +4

Add one more type, color in color. The center is a different color than the outside.
There is also a difference between marble or smoke vinyl when they mix the color of the pellet to make the puck, and a-side b-side, that I assume two puck on top of each other, a bit like the split color, but on the other axis. The very first one look like a a-side b-side.
And you can mix type. like a two color with one half splatter, so for example you take a halt black half white with white splatter and the splatter only show on the black side.
Check out Topshelf Records, they always release colored vinyl and each reprint is different. Lot of cool color and awesome music.

    Hi Jarrett!
Thanks for getting me into record collecting! I've been watching your videos for about a year and a half now, and I'm a big fan!
I know you've made a few videos about colored vinyl, but in a future video, could you discuss the differences between opaque, translucent, and transparent vinyl? I feel like a lot of people and product descriptions get these terms mixed up.
I also feel like there are so many variations of "clear" vinyl. For example, I have colorless transparent vinyl (i.e., my Urban Outfitters exclusive pressing of "Neotheater" by AJR), but some other records I have that are labeled as "clear" are actually translucent white (i.e., my first pressing of "Meliora" by Ghost) or even a translucent light blue (i.e., my "clear" pressing of "Pray for the Wicked" by Panic! at the Disco). Then there are terms like "coke bottle clear" (AKA "mint green") that really just mean that the pressing is tinted, transparent, or translucent light green.
I'd love to hear your opinions on this, and I think this would be a great discussion to have on the channel!
    Thanks,
    Kelsey

I don’t have a high-end set up, just a decent one, but I *definitely* hear a change between colors on my red and yellow marbled Angelwitch lp. I have to crank the volume in between songs, and it’s only in one spot, on one side where there is a solid line between the 2 colors, thats where I can hear the tone of the surface noise change.
The other areas where the colors are “smeared” or “melted” together, it sounds the same to me.

I’ve got a brand new glow in the dark record that has a huge amount of surface noise (Air - Moon Safari). It’s really loud between tracks and quite noticeable in quiet passages.

And the Death Splatter reissues from a couple of years ago are cool. And sound fantastic.. Although Symbolic wasn't reissued the White Metal Blade version from 2014 sounds fantastic.. As for Clear vinyl King Diamonds The Eye also from Metal Blade sounds amazing. The worse ones ive got and heard are early coloured vinyl from Back On Black. I have Emporer In the Nightside eclipse that sounds about half the volume of cd remaster.. And sounds muffled as well.

In my travels I have found the the same titles on colored vinyl and black vinyl sound the same however the between track stuff as well as lead ins and lead outs are, more times than not, much noiser on the colored or clear versions. This especially happens with the ones that are made especially for places like Barnes and Noble. I have gotten some really noisy pressings in color from there.

My cousin owns a Vinyl Cutting Machine, which you can basically record music unto a Vinyl. But those Blank Vinyl Discs are becoming hard to find, not to mention he spent close to $10,000 on the machine itself, which was up for sale for $15,000. That's something I definitely would love to own. But he says that the sound quality is not as good as the original pressed Vinyl. Im more into Compact Cassette Tapes, and been messing around with them and recording music since early '90's. As time went by, I started collecting Vinyls as well, cuz they are awesome! Being a musician, I have a very good hearing. I managed to record my Compact Cassette Tapes louder and cleaner than CD's and especially MP3's. Yes! People may not believe me, but until I play my cassettes to them, they will be shocked. I had people think that I'm playing a CD, until I pressed stop and ejected my Type IV Metal Tape from my 1,000 watt stereo system. While playing music from my tape, things started falling off the shelfves, held a paper close to one of the speakers, it instantly got sliced in half. Yes from playing a cassette tape. Since I have a good hearing, I decided to compare original pressed Vinyl vs Vinyl that my cousin has recorded or "cut" on his Vinyl Cutting Machine. Not much difference at all, just slightly quieter. But average person will never be able to tell the difference. But the price though, for the Vinyl Cutting Machine is not worth it.

Bit late to the party but I am a pressing engineer and there is a measurable difference in surface noise between black vinyl, transparent colors and solid colors. Black PVC is usually extruded and pressed 20-30 degrees hotter than color, white or clear crystal PVC especially have to be pressed sometimes 60 degrees cooler to prevent burning which definitely affects sound quality. Most PVC manufacturers have various different chemical formulas for different color groups and they have their own unique quirks for manufacturing and sound. Personally I think people should just enjoy the music and not be sitting there trying to pick out every tiny pop and crackle, but it's my job to try and minimize that surface noise so I'm acutely aware that there are some fairly major differences in how different PVC compounds work and how they affect sound.

Remember by Air song of the day. 👍🏻

I actively seek out merge/splatter vinyl. I have so many colored ones, that I lost count. As an aside, I do have one glow-in-the-dark double lp, and I think it sounds fine, but I also don't have a hardcore audiophile set-up.

I was surprised you didn't include or expand on "hand poured" vinyl... I have a few of these from graveface records and they look and sound insane!

I have a very rare white vinyl Let It Be album (UK). Apple label, 1977. Also have red and blue albums from same era, in their respective colors. And many various photo discs.

So, what color is the vinyl naturally? Is it clear? Do they add something to make it black?

I find solid and transparent single coloured albums tend to sound the best with the splatter and other fancy versions sometimes being noisier for some reason

Black vinyl has carbon in it hence the color black which makes the record more sturdy and enhances the sound quality when it is pressed.

I actually picked up a copy of Pure Phase (or Pure Phase Electric Mainline to give it's full title) by Spiritualized recently on glow in the dark vinyl & in all honesty, the sound quality of this pressing did not sound any different to most of my other coloured vinyl records. Not sure if that could be down to tight quality control process at the pressing plant or if technology for pressing these types of records has just improved over time. I also just happened to pick up a copy of the 3 x LP of Iron Maiden's latest album Senjutsu this weekend, which was my first marbled vinyl. It's on crimson red with black swirls, which looks & sounds fantastic. Definitely hope to pick up more marble. :D

I have a purple purple rain record and i think the audio is among the best of the records i have right now. in my opinion as stated in the video the sound quality depends on the mixing, engineering, ect that make up the sound mix. Back in the day when vinyl was the preferred medium, the technology didn't exist to monitor and apply to all the different temperatures various colors do respond or melt at when it comes to pressing the vinyl puck so those were purely a gimmick. Now its not a problem unless the sound mix is garbage to begin with.

I think the top vinyl records are the animated vinyl like the angel vinyl record by Jack White. Those seem to be very labor-intensive because you have to etch the vinyl in such a way that it gets the correct shape of what you want animated.

The 4th one that is shown spinning, is that a picture disc? It has white geometric designs. It looks like a consciously designed pattern that wouldn't result looking like that by just placing color vinyl pellets to be pressed.

Mixed feelings on glow in the dark records. My White Zombie - La Sexorcisto from 1992 sounds amazing. My Korn - Serenity in Suffering from 2016 has a little background noise to it. I suspect like all records, it's ultimately up to the masters, stamps and press operator for great sound. But, makes sense considering press quality ultimately isn't as good as it used to be.
