Saudi Arabia and Iran
Separated by the Persian Gulf, the two neighboring countries that have been competing for dominance over the past few decades in a region referred to as The Middle East. Both apparently hate each other. Well, at least their governments do. In recent years, the two countries have been either directly or indirectly involved in several different conflicts throughout the Middle East.
Both countries are run by theocracies, or governments made up of religious leaders. Their religion? Islam. However, Iran does have democracy and a constitution, making it officially a theocratic republic. Saudi Arabia is an absolute monarchy. The king is in charge, making decisions under the guidance of religious leaders and top princes of the royal family. In Saudi Arabia, the Quran is the official constitution of the country.
But yeah, both countries have really authoritarian governments, both ranking near the bottom on the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Democracy Index. An example of this? Both have state-run broadcast media that dominate how citizens get information and regularly feed them pro-government propaganda. There are no private, independent broadcasters. Satellite dishes are even banned in both countries, although people still have them anyway. Private newspapers or magazines are heavily censored. That all said, Iran is a bit more free than Saudi Arabia. At least their government has to be somewhat accountable or they get the boot. And in Saudi Arabia, it’s illegal to be an atheist, punishable by death. Wait, what’s that? Oh, apparently you can get killed for being an atheist in Iran, too.
The vast majority of citizens in both countries are Muslims. However, they are of two different branches of Islam. Around 90-95% in Iran practice Shia Islam, whereas around 85%-90% in Saudi Arabia practice Sunni Islam. This Shia-Sunni divide has been contentious for centuries and always demonstrated an underlying rift between the two countries. But Saudi Arabia can boast Islam started within its borders. It regularly attracts millions to Mecca and Medina, the two holiest cities for Muslims. Medina is where the founder of Islam, Muhammad, is buried. Mecca, the holiest city of them all, attracts Muslims from all over the world each year with the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage all Muslims are expected to make at least once in their life.
Both countries have a similar birth rate and a similar population growth rate. However, Iran has 2 and a half times more people than Saudi Arabia, despite the fact that it has less land area.

I worked in an international school that was pretty much split between Iranian and Saudi students. First week of term they were very wary of each other. Second week, all best friends. Once politics is removed we can pretty much all get along great.
Holy crap. I had no idea. You might be the world's most interesting man. I wish I would have talked about that before I made this!
@@iammrbeat Ha, that's definitely not what I am. Their bonding may have been helped by their mutual hatred of living at a boarding school.
@Ahmed S. The UK. The owners of the school I worked at were Iranian and they recruited a lot from middle eastern countries, especially Saudi Arabia. There were other groups though, Chinese, Nigerian, Russian. It was an interesting mix and on the whole the kids really got on. No problems really with racism or anything.
In my university days, Israeli and Jewish students seemed to be getting along well with the Saudis and other Arabs. When I asked in private the Saudis replied, "The Prophet said to 'know your enemies.'" The Jewish students seemed to think the same way but only said, "This is the US, we have to get along."
That is BULLSHIT. Pretty sure the Persian/Iranian students scored higher marks. Iranians are fucking smart. Not necessarily a fan but that is the reality. There is a huge IQ and culture gap between desert Arabs and the Iranians/Persians.

Well, it’s not like both are all that great...
@ls7orBust are you serious. Iran is way worst than Saudi Arabia.
Arif Aiman "Yes Saudi Arabia have less human rights, more strict and use propaganda" That's WHY you are the bad guys.
"but Saudi Arabia allow trade with other international countries, keeping the peace by not building nuclear weapon and allow other immigrants to stay and settle in the country." *sarcasm* Your government gave you permission to do that? Well i guess you arn't that bad after all! Did you forget that those immigrants don't have freedom of religion and can be killed if they try to convert a Muslim to another religion?
@@Personmr Which one is better? A country that hate and despise other country and glorify their own people by saying that they are the best or a country that manipulate their own people for their own personal gain. Yes in Saudi Arabia you could be killed if a Muslim try to convert to another religion but in Iran you either get killed, hated and chase out from the country for being an American.
@ls7orBust That the best solution for that nuclear shit Iran have. If Iran and US goes to war things could go bad really fast. Plus Iran would not be sanctioned if they don't build the nuclear weapon in the first place.
1) Iran has been a country for a Loooong time and did not "become" a country in 1979. The '79 revolution simply ended the monarchy system and installed the current system of government.
2) Why pronouncing Iran like EYE-Ran (or iRan)? Do you also pronounce Illinois like EYE-llinois? The 'i' in 'Iran' is pronounced like the 'i' in 'Istanbul' or 'Illinois'. Its simply called iiiiran /iːˈrɑːn/. No more iRan please, its not an Apple product lol
Some inaccurate facts, 1979 was actually the yeah the Shah, the symbol of imperialist dominance was removed, and the birth of the Islamic republic
@The short Lad, How is that relevant to my comment?
- Btw you should note that the second part of your comment is NOT correct. Comparing to the current 'Islamic regime' and its enforced rules, of course some of the current restrictions did not exist prior to the 1979 revolution. But definitely pre '79 was not how you put it, hence the uprising and the revolution. How the revolution got hijacked and became an Islamic Rev. is a whole another topic though.
Oh tribble revolution Sans-thought

Either pronunciation is fine by me, just dont try to force it and shame people
Not I-ren !! Iran is correct. “I” as “ee” in -meeting- and “A” as “a” in -are-
Thumbs up! What about the contribution to human civilization comparison between Saudi Arabian and Iran?
in regards to the theoretical benefits of Iran teaming up with Saudi Arabia, you might as well ask why didn't Prussia and France didn't team up during the 18th century
I was just about to say that 😂
Theoretically very fair statement but not very realistic
They did team up in the 18th century prior to the war of Austria succession and during Napoleons invasion of Russia.
Pasdar indeed we can’t be friends. It’s like good and evil you can’t just combine it together. The mother land of islam and the peninsula of Arabs which is Saudi Arabia would never surrender to the likes of you. After all god all mighty protect it. its funny you said “al saud is Western installed dictatorship” and what are you french western dictatorship?
@Pasdar Except that Muslims are still fighting each other for no reason while the Catholics and Protestants stopped their beef a while ago. But the Orthodox Christians still quarrel with the Catholics.

Are you from Iran or Saudi Arabia? Have you been to either country? Please let me know what I got right and what I got wrong. Also, what questions should I answer for my upcoming Q&A livestream?
Edit: I accidentally mixed up the flags at 1:00. Also, women do have to wear hijabs in Iran, by law. However, it is inconsistently enforced.
I am an expat living in Saudi Arabia, and I can say this video is relatively accurate. However, you did miss a couple of pronunciations. Another thing is that although Saudi Arabia has a higher gdp per capita, it is safe to say foreigners make 2 times less money than Saudi nationals due to discrimination. Unless you work in ARAMCO. Due to this, Saudis rarely work or ever go to their workplace. Anyways, well made video!
Mr. Beat
Oyvey! Hell no...
but I do have relatives in Telaviv and a fishing boat in Haifa.. 😁
Arabian Dude "I’m Saudi Arabian and the video is impressively accurate, however I would like to add something; saying Saudi government is theocratic is not very accurate. The government claims to be theocratic but truth is Saudi government hates religious people and about 95% of all government opponents are from the “religious establishment”" Their laws are based on religion. Even if the government really did hate religious people, they kowtow to them. In order to become a national; you need to convert to Islam and proselytizing for another religion carries the death penalty. If i had to speculate I'd say that you are from a different denomination than the one espoused by the government.
"In 1979 there was a true attempt to turn Saudi Arabia into an ISIS like state, more than one saudi city were captured for months by extremists most notably Makkah city. But then the government began to issue laws to appease angry religious people and started acting like a theocratic nation (the rules apply only to non royals though)." So it went from being a less theocratic nation to a more theocratic nation? Was apostacy legal before then? Was it legal to be an atheist before then? Was the Quran not the constitution before then?
Who did you vote for in all Presidential Elections you were able to vote in? (Primaries included) If you don't mind saying.
Arabian dude I wasn’t compairing saudi arabia to iran; i was compairing saudi arabia to countries that have the decency to give their citizens human and civil rights. The lesser of two evils is still evil. I don’t know if iran is better or worse than saudi arabia.

But an Arab woman slapped me so bad and called me Mushrek!

that's why I don't like them .
However , I think some of them are nice ppl , I shouldn't argue with them

The name is Iran... not Eyeran... 🤦♂️
Ee... do you say Eyendia...no India?
-Sattelites dishes are not illegal in Iran. (They were when sattelite tv was first introduced but quickly the gov't gave up) in fact They have their own satteltite based channels.
-Iran has freedom of religion (to a certain degree of tolerance)... there are churches, synagogues, hindu temples etc... and more than half the country ARE atheist... public practice is not easy to do but the religions are accepted... unlike all Arab nations, we do not consider a person's religion as part of their personal information... in fact all Arabs have their religion stated in their passports... we do not. Not even on birth certificates...
Furthermore, we have every religion existing in Iran even Jewish 😉
-Iran also has holy sites for Muslims... for SHIA Muslims at least...
-Iran has history dating back over 200,000 to 300,000 thousand years... certain sites date back to even more... it is the place where the first ever monotheistic religion in history was recorded... so old in fact that they can't pinpoint the date.
-women have NO rights in Saudi Arabia. Iran has women ministers and the highest female education rate in the region (aside from India... or Eyendia, 🤣) Lol
- In Iran u can get alcohol easier than u can get a burger haha
