    This looks a good one to do. The bearing pusher looks like a G clamp!! I might adapt one for this. thanks for posting.

    I used 2 sockets and a G clamp. worked really well, took 20 mins!!

    That is amazingly easy with the C-clamp. I have essentially the same size one and will use it next time. I actually used an old socket to provide the sleeve to catch the bearing cups and tapped them out with another socket and hammer then re-pressed them with a large bench vice. I can actually, I imagine, do the same with the sockets and the C-clamp.

    Well, I got one cap off my first cross without damaging a tooth. The next cap took out two at the same time as I tried to thread it between them. Clean breaks. Doh! I just recently bought a similar mercruiser, and dear God the caps on some of my joints were bone dry!

    If I have a boat mechanic do this job for me, how many hours would this job take, or what should I expect the cost to be?

    • @MadPropsMakes
      @MadPropsMakes  Před 3 lety

      probably a few hours, but they are probably going to tell you while you're at it to replace some other things... no idea on cost, ive only ever worked on my boat myself :)

    So my husband replaced our u joints in our boat when we put it back together now when we start the boat its in gear? did he do something wrong?

    • @MadPropsMakes
      @MadPropsMakes  Před 3 lety

      My guess would be the shift cable was not in forward when the drive was reinstalled and its not engaging the cable correctly

    I am new to boating and have a Mercruiser 5.0 with a Bravo 3. I'm just trying understand the basic principles of the engine. I appreciate your video to see the inner workings, but could you explain to me the "how"? Or maybe post a 3 minute video? I just cant seem to find it on the 'net. Specifically, how do the u-joints work. How does the drive shaft spin, etc. I am most interested to understand why you can damage the u-joints if you trim up into the trailering range while underway. Mercruiser says it is safe to do so while below 1200 RPMs. A reason I could see to do this would be to access shallow water areas that we enjoy. But the general boating community seems to say, "Dont ever do that while the engine is running at all, because it puts too much stress on the u-joints." I dont want to harm my engine, but I dont want to succumb to undue paranoia either. So could you explain to me the how/why of that? I would really, really appreciate it if you could. Thank you!

      A general mercruiser sterndrive system overview is not a bad idea... unfortunately I probably wont have time to make something like that until later in the fall when work on my boats slows down. Thanks for watching

    DO NOT CUT CASTLE NUT! It's only 4 bolts and a nut to take drive shaft our of upper and do right.

    Great video!
    I have a question for you.......
    When my sterndrive is straight, I hear no noise whatsoever, however when I turn the wheel in either direction I get a horrible knocking/clunking noise until I bring the wheel back to straight position. My engine alignment tool slides with 2 fingers effortlessly in and out, etc....
    U joints appear in good shape, no slop and taking grease.
    Cannot figure out where the clunking is coming from.
    Any guess?
    Thank you for your time.

    • @MadPropsMakes
      @MadPropsMakes  Před 4 lety +1

      Definitely sounds like bad ujoints. If your gimbal bearing hasn't been changed in a while, might start with that, but odds are its u joints

    • @81randallchadcohen
      @81randallchadcohen Před 4 lety

      @@MadPropsMakes Thanks dude! The sterndrive was off the boat for a year so maybe they took a beating during that time, as it was a yard. The weird thing is that before the repower, the sterndrive was smooth, no noise. I'll start with the bearings and u joints. Thanks again - going to watch ur video a few more times!
