Let me be clear that when it comes to fashion and style, I truly believe there are NO rules. BUT, I think it's a good idea to have your own set of individualized guidelines that you can follow to help you feel your best in your clothes, and to even shop smarter in the future. So the "rules" I'm talking about in today's video are the ones I generally follow to make the most out of my clothes and style.
What are some of your own style rules? Let me know in the comments!

"Dress for comfort" - seems so obvious, doesn't it? But many women (including me) were taught to look "pretty" in the first place no matter if they felt comfortable in these clothes. I am so happy this is changing. And by the way, with time I learned that you can have both comfort and chic look - and that you can (and should!) define "looking pretty" by yourself :) Thank you, Christina for a very inspirational video!

I agree with all of these except getting dressed at home 😅. I work from home and cannot stand wearing jeans at home. I do however wear some “fancier” lounge wear and make sure I am cleaned and hair is somewhat polished to make myself feel better.

I really like how you never pretend that your rules are universal and never shame anyone for having different ideas of stylle. I love your style, so your rules are very useful for me. The first one seems so obvious but actually really had me think. Thank you!

“Embrace being an outfit repeater” is such a big one for me. I have really figured out my personal style from a lot of trial and error, and now I have a selection of a few pairs of jeans and a good number of tops that just make me feel awesome and look great. But it leads to not having a lot of variety, and I never get bored with it. I love using a statement jacket and shoes as a way to make an outfit different. Tricks I learned from your channel!!!

    1. Dress for comfort.
    2. Invest in good underwear.
    3. Limit colours to a max of 3.
    4. Less is more (accessories).
    5. Stick to the rule of thirds (proportion-wise).
    6. Get dressed (instead of wearing athleisure).
    7. Embrace being an outfit repeater.
    8. Integrate occasion wear with regular wardrobe.
    9. Wait at least 6 months before buying into a trend.
    10. Size up a max of 1 size.

Here’s one of my rules: Get a great tailor and get your clothes perfectly fitted. I finally found the best tailor at a local cleaners (I had been skeptical that tailors at cleaners were as good as special alterations shops). A good tailor can take a double breasted jacket and make it single, remove pockets, shorten sleeves at the shoulder and just about everything else. I do use a different place for denim - Dr. Blue Jeanns.

I agree with all 10 rules, but when it comes to no.6 i do have clothes i just wear in the house. They are usually cozy, soft and comfortable. I never go outside in them. If i go to the shop, other errands, lunch with friends i put other clothes on. That's just me.

I think the trend one is so important because it seems so counterintuitive. I mean, many would assume being the first to a trend is good, but really it just means your style is almost always looking like a costume or dated and almost never in that effortlessly stylish ideal. Incorporating trends after you’ve had a lot of time to actually consider if a trend is you means your personal style has integrity, or even exists at all!

Completely agree on the oversized advice. I've always been frustrated that the look didn't suit me when I really wanted it to (seemed like a good solution for comfort), recently discovered I can do it if certain elements are more "tailored" eg shoulder seam and sleeve length on an oversized blazer. Keeps it looking relaxed but not like I'm playing dress ups with dad's work clothes.

re: "get dressed every day." Yep. I learned this one in the mid '80s when I started working from home as a court reporter. There were days when I'd have to dress up and go to courtrooms or attorneys' offices, and then there were days when I'd have to sit at the typewriter (!!!) at home after having stacked my carbon paper between the typing paper (!!!!!!!!!) and type the transcripts. (Boy, was I ever glad when we got the computers, the dot-matrix printers, the multi-copy paper that came pre-stacked in big boxes.). On the days when I worked from home, if I didn't "get dressed" and "have a schedule" on those days, and in those days I had little kids running around at home, I just got little or nothing done. If, however, I got up, got the kids going, dressed "for work" and worked at home that day, I got stuff done.

Love your sustainable tips which encourage us to be more creative with our current wardrobe. I work from home often and also enjoy being comfortable. To elevate athleisure, I like wearing monotone outfits (tho sometimes top and bottom have different textures), a necklace, and I'll put on a cap or beanie outside.

Also, regarding trends, I totally agree about waiting. Or find it secondhand. I recently found a SHACKET that I love and is gorgeous at a thrift store. I would probably NEVER would have bought one if it wasn't for finding this gem while looking for something else. I have been challenging myself to wear it, and I am happy to report that I am and it fits in my wardrobe well! I don't always have these kinds of wins when buying something new (I'm learning to edit edit edit and be patient!), but am so pleased with how this one turned out :)

These videos have been so helpful for me in my "finding my style" journey.
The problem I'm running into is buying something I think will work (colouring, size), I like it at first, until I actually wear it a few times and realizing it's annoying..for a few examples:
    - I bought a sweater dress online, that I really liked the look of, but then wore it and realized the arms are too short for me
    - Or a sweater that when I wore it I realized the colour washed me out
    - Or a pair of pants that I tried on and fell in love with in the store, only to wear them out in the world and they're too tight in the crotch.
Why is it so hard to find clothes that I love? What am I doing wrong?

Hey Christina, Thanks so much for posting such amazing videos! I wanted to ask you if you knew of any companies I should look at for life long, high quality, natural fiber, closet staples for VERY petite women (for reference I'm 5'1, 100lb, athletic build). HELP!

How do you make the Nippies stay in place? I see the link says they’re non-adhesive.

They’re not?! That must be the wrong link - I’ll update that. Try searching nippies pn Amazon they’re def on there and they’re reusable and adhesive!

@@Christinamychas ya, the link was to non-adhesive ones, and I saw they have adhesive ones too. If the non-adhesive ones somehow stay in place, that would be fab. I'll look for your suggestion, tho.

Getting dressed got a lot easier when I gave up the notion that I had to hit all the basics or neutrals available to diversify or extend my wardrobe options. Deep and caramel browns look awful on me IMO, gray tops are ok in certain shades but I have never can find flattering gray bottoms, and navy isn’t for me either in most cases. I studied the colors I felt best in and did my own color analysis (which I got wrong a few times bc I’m a redhead with both cool and warm skin tones and it was confusing), decluttered and now I can throw most anything together out of my closet and it looks better than any of the outfits I use to come up with in the past. That and accepting that I can appreciate an aesthetic without incorporating it. I love puffy, flowey, ruffled romantic looks on others, but I’m more on the androgyny side of the femme spectrum 😅 also, I will quoth the internet forevermore hahaha This helped me clean up my wishlist, too! I actually know what I’m looking for and it’s so awesome to have the vocabulary and focus for once in my life and not just buying stuff because it’s cute or I think it would go with something else I have already.

I never really liked the rule of thirds. On you it does look very cool, but I think it is mostly suiting people with flat stomach or with chest significantly bigger than belly. Because once you have bottoms which are in any way tight to skin (even if it’s jeans), this cut on the waist turns into LOOK AT THAT BELLYYY. Which is rather unflattering 🤷‍♀️
I also find “taller + longer legs” a bit overrated:) again, i think it looks great on you and your figure, but some body types just look very cute when they appear short and small 😊

    • @agam406
      @agam406 Před rokem +1

I also have a problem with that rule. I don't have and never had (even whan I was slim) a defined waist. Secondly, my waist line is quite high and I have a big bust, so tucking in or using a belt really looks unflaterring.

@@agam406 yet another proof that all rules in fashion are relative and we need to adjust them to our personalities and bodies 😉

Your outer layers look way too big for you. You have a slender, youthful figure, but the blazers you have chosen make you look boxy. The shoulders are more than three inches beyond your natural shoulders. Other than that, your recommendations are very practical, and the fabrics you show drape very nicely.
