I think there's countries that are promoting breeding with long nose breeds to correct the problem or only allow breeding of, say, pugs etc with longer noses to try and lengthen their snouts. Wish something similar would be done with dachshunds to lengthen their legs, thus preventing spinal collapse

There are no money in promoting that. On the international stage, there are standards for each breed, and they will fall out of the standard and win nothing.
This costs the breeders around the world millions, since they can no longer sell puppies after great winning parents. People will go elsewhere to buy the puppies. It causes great damage to the breeders

I never fails to shock me how we knowingly breed, buy, and promote brachycephalic pet animals: sentient creatures forced to continually feel the background panic of nearly (or literally) choking throughout their *entire* little lives. Just heartbreaking. All breeds with "characteristics" which in reality are these dangerous malformations and birth defects catastrophic to the animals' health and quality of life should be retro-bred back to their healthier origins at least and kept there under a penalty of animal abuse. It's just unacceptable for a pet animal to be born to choke - by our choice

That change needs to happen very soon since it takes a few generations and the longer it takes the more dogs are suffering.
Sure they're cute but I think a dog that can breathe properly and can run around as much as they want is so much cuter. For me the worst part is that those dogs panic because they can't get enough air in, I know what that feels like but I also know what's happening and they don't which probably makes it much worse.

There are multiple veterinarians in my family, and if you want to set them off, all you need to do is mention breeding brachycephalic dogs. They find it unforgivably cruel, and I have to agree. Having a poor, innocent animal suffer all its life in order to provide someone (often someone shallow) with the 'cute' they desire is unacceptable.
PS: Another aspect of breeding brachycephalic dogs is how often the size of pups' heads causes problems during whelping. It's shocking how many puppies must be born via caesarean section.

Her belly has a large caesarean scar form that birth process - for the very reasons you point out. Sadly her genetics will have been passed on before she was later neutered (after she was under my care). Jenny did a great job in getting the lovely Cassie out of that horrible house and for providing her with the love and care that she deserves, and once Scott explained that the noises were not her communicating but actually struggling to breath she also got the medical help she needed to be able to live a healthy life. It was a really great idea to let Jenny witness the surgery and see the reality of the problem which gave a much more realistic perspective of the reason why poor Cassie was struggling so much to breathe that words can do. It was really good to see the before and after and easily tell what a great impact that the surgery would have for Cassie’s
ongoing future đŸ‘đŸ». To see her racing around the park and thoroughly enjoying her life - and being able to breathe ! - was wonderful đŸ˜„đŸ¶â€ïž. There definitely needs to be more control over the breeding of dogs and manipulating them to be how we as humans want them to look rather than how nature intended for them to be. For organisations such as crufts that are so big in the canine world to think that dogs bred like this is ok and let them win trophies for it is just beyond comprehension đŸ€Ź. Surely these organisations should have the welfare / health of dogs as a top priority and not looks đŸ€”. Hopefully people will begin to listen to the concerns raised by vets and focus on the welfare of animals first and foremost đŸ€žđŸ»đŸ™đŸ» Dogs need to be able to breathe normally and not constantly feel in fear / not be able to live a normal existence due to problems we have caused 😱

It's not just dogs that suffer from this. Some Persian cats to do. A friend of mine rescued a Persian cat from similar circumstances as Cassie. The poor cat had the tiniest nose I've ever seen and associated breathing problems because of it. She was a really sweet cat. Unfortunately, because of her condition she had to go to the vets quite a lot. The cat passed age 17 but I have no doubt had it not been for the care my friend gave her cat, she would not have lived as long. In the end she passed with kidney failure and my friend was heartbroken. It really angers me that people breed these animals without a care for their health and welfare. These extreme breeds come about because some judge at a cat or dog show thinks a cat or dog with an extremely flat face looks good, makes it a "desirable" trait and people fall for it. It is the same with Siamese cats. Some are bred with huge ears that stick out of the side of their heads, making them look like an alien from another planet. To me, there is nothing nice about that. There is a documentary called Pedigree Dogs Exposed which deals with Syringomyelia in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and how German Shepherds were being bred with such a roached back that they could hardly walk - and one was crowned Champion at Crufts. You can find it on a website called documentaryheaven dot com but be warned, it is heartbreaking to watch.

The latest thing is the breeding of Arabian horses with super dipped faces that there is barely any nose left for the horse to breathe, not only does it look fake it also looks disturbing and you can see that the animal will struggle to breathe if you try to ride it for more than 20 minutes. As long as there are canine breeders thriving at exhibitions and judges promote the "norm" there will be a problem. When it is rewarded to have the flattest nose, the narrowest angle on the hind legs (german shepherd) and other man maid awarded crippeling of animals, there won't be a change. As long as people buy these breeds from these breeders, there will be no change. I think it is a problem all over the world, and we have to give the dogs, cats and other animals their right to breath, move and exist in a healthy way back. Dont by these breeds, dont exhibit them, dont give them diplomas for the "prettiest" and best standard breed. Just stop it. Be responsible, do the right thing by animals for once. Poor poor animals. A really interesting and informative video that really highlights the issues suffered by these poor brachycephalic dogs and why as dog owners we should be as concerned by these inbreeding defects as the veterinary profession are. Poor Cassie was living her life struggling to breath or do normal dog activities as a result of humans focusing on looks of an animal rather than its health 😱😡 and that is just cruelty at the end of the day. Very good idea to have Jenny watching the surgery so she - and us - can see the issues first hand and really understand why these poor dogs struggle so much đŸ‘đŸ» Seeing Cassie enjoying herself so much at the park was just beautiful and really highlights how much healthier and full of life she now is after this inbred defect has been treated đŸ˜€đŸ¶đŸ’“ She has a wonderful new home with Jenny and they will have a great life together full of love and fun, and a big part of that is also due to the wonderful work of Scott and his care and compassion for animals but also for educating owners and supporting them to do the best for their pets đŸ‘đŸ»đŸ‘šâ€âš•â€ Now hopefully people will listen to vets and more will be done to stop this kind of inbreeding that just makes animals suffer đŸ€žđŸ»

I've believed that brachycephalic breeds, both dogs and cats, have been shaped by humans to have terrible lives because they can't breathe properly. We humans are entirely to blame for this; these breeds used to have longer noses, and we've decided they look better with flatter faces with no consideration for their health at all. We're also responsible for breeding dogs like English bulldogs and pugs to be incapable of giving birth naturally because we've bred them to have such big heads with relatively small hips. I wish every breeder would start breeding to correct the damage we've done. We caused it; if we tried, we could fix it

The American GSDs are also bred to breed standards rather than the dog’s health. The sloping back makes the American GSDs prone to dislocated hips and other orthopedic problems. A friend of mine breeds Shih Tzu. They’re adorable, but being short snouts their snoring makes me feel bad for the breed.

It is how she got her name, her feet look like she has been walking through snow and it is stuck on her boots. Anyway, she is flat faced enough to also have the same snoring issues for sure when she is sleeping but also when awake sometimes. Unfortunately there are no Vets withing 300 miles that perform this type of corrective surgery on cats. I'm so scared she will not have the length of life she should have. I am especially attached to her since I had bottle raised her from 3 days old.

In Germany you can a fitness test. It's a treadmill-based test was developed to test brachycephalic dogs for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). It provides information about the presence of the disease, which can be used in therapeutic and breeding decisions. You then get an official certification of the test results. Some breed specific dog clubs, like the The Internationale Klub fĂŒr Französische Bulldoggen e. V. (IKFB) (French Bulldog club) have specific rules about breeding and the VDH (the 'controlling' dog club for all breeds) have Breed-specific instructions regarding breeding-related 'over typification' in purebred dogs in their show rules, these rules included many other breeds, but of course also brachycephalic dogs. The sad thing is that reputable and ethical breeders will follow these rules and guidelines, but many others will carry on as usual, with no concern for the dogs they are breeding.
I don't think banning is a solution either. As with all bans, the ethical people will stop doing it, but the people who don't care will continue illegally.

I really feel like the Kennel Clubs around the world should be more strict and vocal on the health issues that plague brachycephalic dogs. Show standards should not encourage the breeding of dogs that subsequently causes them to suffer severe health issues.

@@wendyblaauw2578 you are right, for the wrong reasons. One guy I know, he bred German shepherds, did leave when the new standards came in. He took two looks, he declared it was not in the interests of dogs. Turns out he was correct as Cruffs 2016 champ exemplified. These days he is happy as a clam breeding HEALTHY, intelligent, attentive, working line dogs

Some of his dogs have served with insert military or police here. He, and European working line dogs are the major sources, apart of what we also breed. None if those dogs could grace a show ring. However, they are used for what they were bred to do.
Breeders of multiple breeds need to wake up. All their hubris is leading to very unhealthy animals. Brachiocephalic breeds are just the worse, more obvious. It should be classified as animal abuse.
If you can’t tell, I have very strong feelings about this. When we were searching for a dog in 2019
my husband had fallen in love with pugs. They are adorable. So we went down and read on the breed
what we found left us in shock. We purposely adopted a special needs chihuahua mix
we sort of did not fully know what atopic dermatitis is. We are once again in search of a dog, with a good temperament, with potential to be trained as a service dog. There is a slew of breeds, or even mixes, we won’t take even a look at. Flat faced dogs is one of them.
They are not healthy, and boy they have so many issues. If it takes governments, it’s starting, forbidding these dogs as animal abuse, so be it. Maybe increasing numbers of regulatory bodies around Europe, and now the US, will wake breeders up and they will start outcrossing these animals. Or, the breeds will go extinct. The fact they can’t deliver naturally should be the huge red blaring light for breeders.
My brother was in that world when I was growing up, the show ring. He bred champion Great Danes
and boy the excuses breeders come with are just amazing.
