I'm italian, this is the best Richard Benson analysis i've ever seen/heard.
You're a very intelligent person and the love and the passion you have for music can be felt trough the beautiful worlds you have spent for this unlucky and wrongly shamed man.
Unfortunately, today Richard Benson is very diseased, he has several heart problems, he's got no more money, all his "fans" have abandoned him and he lives in a state of poverty.
He's slowly dying alone...and this is terribly sad.
Anyway, as an italian and a guitarist, i have to thank you...in the name of Richard too.

Richard passed away in May, a bit more than one month ago. It's sad to think about how downhill things went for him, especially considering what he endured while playing music. At least we can take comfort in the fact that he can finally rest, and the reality that the truth about him is being told.
In his last videos he seemed to have recovered a lot. He looked good in shape and released a great song. It’s truly sad that he passed.

@@androszisimides1222He honestly made a LOT of his hellish life, all things considered. To be loved by, hated by, talked about by so many people - a much bigger impact that most of us will have. Some of his old videos are (intentionally) very funny and entertaining, he had a whole encyclopaedia of bands/guitarists/musical knowledge in his head, and he really did make some damn cool songs.
I can relate to Richard more than most people. I played guitar for 33 years. In 2010 I was diagnosed with a devastating Terminal Neurological disease that robbed me of my ability to play. As it progressed I knew I had to make a few videos to be able to look back on so those are the videos on my channel. Eric Clapton has the exact same disease as I do, mine is far more severe and progressed far quicker than Eric. My heart broke when I saw people hating on Richard, truly broke my heart for the poor guy. Loosing my creative outlet was like having my heart ripped from my chest. Thank you Fil for making this video. God bless you friend!
@Thaydrian : You probably know of him, but if not I highly recommend checking out Jason Becker. Truly one of the best rock guitarists in the world. He was in the band _Cacophony_ with Marty Friedman (ex Megadeath guitarist) back in the late 80's and was one my biggest influences back then.
He was just starting to record an album with David Lee Roth after Steve Vai left the band (pretty huge shoes to fill, but he was the guy to do it) when his ALS started to show itself. Within a few weeks he was unable to play any more and was soon in a wheelchair.
But he is still writing amazing music these days, and if anything he is an even better composer now. Have a look, the man is a true hero to so many of us, and in his own words: _"the sexiest man alive"._

And the fact that he's been nothing more than a living meme to the Italian people since the late nineties is a shame... At one point he was very capable

I had my first guitar lesson in 90's with Richard, in Rome.
We was nice with me, strong, fast, and in a local tv channel was a perfect music expert, let listening all cd of Satriani, Vai, Rondat, Masi, Vinnie More, ecc.
An inspiration for me and for thousands people.

It’s a great quote. Recognizing we are sinners is the usually the largest hurdle of realizing we need God and his forgiveness. Authentic Christianity rightly understood has no such thing as self righteousness.

To say "I'd rather be an honest sinner" is sometimes something a villain would say as a tongue in cheek way to justify his actions. I agree that humility and the recognition of your own propensity towards vice and sin and the acknowledgement of God's role is key to removing pride and self-righteousness. I'm not sure what you mean by "There is no such thing as self-righteous". Of there are self-righteous people, but I think what you mean is that, by our nature, it's always a lie. Pride come before the fall.

This reminds me of a time in my early 20's playing in bands and I saw a man in his 70's playing in a restaurant .Everything was done with 1 finger solos pretty basic , mistakes the works....Instantly I said to myself "I hope can be that guy when I'm 70 still doing it "

I'm ashamed to say that when I first started watching the Richard Benson videos on CZcams I laughed hysterically. After watching this video I felt ashamed of myself. This is a lesson in human 101 and has genuinely opened my eyes.

When I first started watching them I didn't realize that he had medical issues, I thought he was just a bad guitar player.

@Nathan Hardee : Perhaps you could follow Richards example of playing for the love of it, and stop seeing what is an art form as a race. In art, there is no comparison worthy of mentioning. Either you like it, or you don't. Either one is fine. There's no reason why you or anyone should always like the same things. Besides, comparing *your* growth to that of someone else of any level, even your own level, is illogical and will only cause your playing to stagnate, or even quit.

My heart breaks for this poor man. I just hope everyone who threw something at this artist that night, or any other, experiences how this feels. So terrible. Only the lowest of the low would do something like that. I play guitar. I am older now (66). I certainly don't play like I am 23 anymore. Age does matter. But the heart still wants to participate in music. That never dies. Have some empathy people. You will be there one day, unless you leave the planet first. Such poignant comments from you Fil. I've always had the opinion that if someone is on stage you should be supportive of what they play even if they aren't very skilled or you aren't as into their style.
Paul Bradford. Actually his phrasing was better when he was younger. Everone loses it when they get old. Poor guy. His guitars tone was never up to par though. He can play but he needs to set up his sound better.

Arthritis is a horrible disease. I watched my grandmother and mother, who were always active, wither away and die because of it.
It is not easy to understand the strange relationship that has been established between Richard and his fans in the last period. He has built more and more of himself a grotesque character, even on television, much loved especially because he screamed like crazy when he got angry.
Therefore, the people who threw eggs at him during concerts were doing so mainly to anger him rather than humiliate him. Richard in fact put a net in front, like in the Blues Brothers movie, but often it was not close enough or too close.
I agree that throwing eggs at him was wrong, considering Richard was unlucky and would certainly have preferred a brilliant career as a skilled guitarist. But I also believe that the same people who threw eggs at Richard, they mourn him today with great affection.
If we are all honest with ourselves we each could say we're not what we used to be. Life can knock us down at one point or another but I admire anybody that perseveres to spite trials and tribulations, it shows character! Insecure people tear other people down. Your analysis was so late tonight because you work so hard on behalf of other people, Fil....Bless you for that... ❤❤🤘

I am italian and i am from rome and i ve been his student at the beginning of 2000. He used to be nice, i ve been to some of his late concerts and unfortunately his good ol days passed. Hes still good, he just made out this teatrical character to gain some money since he got badly sick lately. Hands up Richard, Roma te saluta

I'm a huge fan of Richard. I am Italian and I've known him (artistically speaking) for a long time, almost 20 years. His story is a very sad story indeed. He was "something" back in the 70's. Not the best guitar player Italy has ever had, but he could play decently and, during the progressive rock years, when PFM, Genesis, Gentle Giant were big, he came out with a band called "Il Buon vecchio charlie". Their self titled album was very good, but unfortunately it didn't receive the succes it deserved (it was republished during the 90's and in Japan went almost sold-out). If you want, go check it out, it really deserves some attention. Anyway, he played some big festivals here in Italy, then he became an important music critic for some importan radio stations. he talked about rock and heavy metal when nobody was willing to: he introduced heavy metal in the Italian radios, so many young boys started to become interested in that kind of music. Richard kept playing the guitar, he played some local shows mixing music with theatre, while still talking about rock and heavy metal. He was and still is very pasisonate about music to the point that he is some kind of human encyclopedia: he knows EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING about the history of rock, blues or jazz...everything. His education in this area is kind of unbelievable. During the 90's he had his own space on TV, presenting "Ottava Nota": a show that introduced heavy metal, reviews about albums and records, he talked about unknown bands and even guitar playing, he was a columnist for guitar reviews... He kept playing in shows where people throw stuff at him BUT this is not something he hates.: he LOVES his fans and his fans loves him. But something happens. Rumors say that in the first years of 2000 he started having arthritis...some say that he attempted suicide by jumping off a bridge but missing the river...so he crashed into a concrete along the river. Maybe he atempted suicide because he couldn't play the guitar the way he'd dreamed about for so long, maybe he was heartbroken or just clinically depressed...I personally don't know and nobody really knows what happened. After a long recovery he came back on TV with another music show, always introducing new bands and new music to the young guys willing to explore the heavy metal realm. He kept playing but as you can see his index finger was out of the game...and during the last years he's been suffering from a very bad heart disease. he is now unrecognizable...

I think you're right, during the years I think I was too rude about him, probably I never understood this man completely. However, I still think that if only he focused on melody, and playing at his best, instead of trying to go faster and faster and shredding like hell, he would have been probably a much better guitarist. Because you can say "hey he knew what he was doing" and it's true, ut sometimes I had the impression the he was not actually knowin g how to put all of that stuff together in a song. Like a director who has any means he wants for special effects but he has problems to make them real, so you see the the flaws. but beside this, yes, I think you're right, he wasnt that bad as many of us (me included) ever thought. ^^

I will admit, that before I educated myself on Richard Benson I laughed at him. I did some more research into him and his story is fascinating. Keep doing what you love Richard Benson.

Empathy is so hard to come by these days, people would rather not take the time to hear his story and continue to be ignorant. My heart went out to him watching this video but his dedication, determination and love for playing is so inspiring. Think about it this guy may be the first person ,musician ,artist,what ever in, " well I don't wanna say history" cause the crowd always boos and throws shit ,but this is his gig ; people "fans " go to throw eggs at him; ITALIANS have a weird type of humor . he is becoming famous I don't think Europeans would throw eggs
He never was that popular as a musician, but when he turned himself into a side show freak people finally took notice.
The reason people love to hate him is not about his inability to play anymore and more about his outlandish behavior. He became a person who was brought onto show to be outrageous and have a freakout. As for his performances he goes to venues with plastic wrap covering the stage and they don't stop people from bringing in eggs and other items to pelt him with - this is planned. I don't know his mental state but why would others let him be abused? unless it is planned and part of an act.

WHO PUT THESE TEARS ON MY KEYBOARD!! I blame you Fil! it's very tragic to hear about this man and his hands. Never knowing of him till now it was painfully obvious that something was wrong with his hands in the first clip you showed. Crazy to think how the path of life can have incredible highs and then terrifying lows.

The most humiliating thing is that having his ability fading away because of the disease, he had to rely on having people throwing stuff at him for fun in order to get a paycheck and become a laughable Character.
This is beyond sad.
In the late 90s Richard had two problems: he was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of arthritis of the hands and his partner at the time decided to separate from him. These two events prompted him to attempt suicide by throwing himself from a bridge in Rome over the Tiber River, after this suicide attempt he managed to recover after months of hospitalization and a slow recovery path. The accident worsened his condition by making him disabled in the legs and aggravating the problem in the hands. In the long run, Benson recycled himself with this trash character, who does these extreme shows with limitless contacts with his audience. It must be said that Benson was never a professional guitarist, he never had a professional continuity (in a band or as a soloist) as a guitarist, he was the classic character of the 70s lived outside the professional context, active more as a music critic that as a musician (for over 20 years she has conducted a musical program that proposed rock music that was little known in Italy). Even the current interest in Richard Benson "rediscovered" thanks to CZcams is due to the trash period, the one following the attempted suicide. Without the trash shows of the 2000s Richard Benson would be remembered today by very few people, also because as a musician his musical activity was very limited and of little value.

It’s a classic example of more worthwhile/convincing internet disinformation, where instead of making a flat out wrong statement, you make some very accurate references, but then dump in something false. False like in this case: he never had a professional career. Dude, one simple search query shows this to be patently false: he did do quite a bit as a musician and a critic in the ‘80s. Now was his status among the peak of stars? Probably not, but that takes time and effort, something Benson didn’t have as his career and star were cut short with the facts of his illness. But none of this in anyway means he “wasn’t a professional musician or guitarist”. Guy was producing music and it was put to commercial use; as professional as it gets, end of story. One doesn’t have to be Vai level of fame to get the basic credit of having produced professional content.
As for whether or not he’d be remembered today without the “trash” character. That’s also a lot of hyperbole and conjecture. This guy making the comment doesn’t know the extent of Benson’s mental health issues that followed his physical problem, or how his former celebrity star was exploited by other parties to ridicule that new gimmick. Sure, he may have not been the viral meme that ignorant people mocked and insidious people spread misinformation over, but he’d have had a name and a small cult following being referenced as a highly gifted guitarist with a small discography and production credits from the ‘80s.
Fil, this is one of your best analysis and break down on an artist. I have not herd of Richard Benson until now. keep up the great work of educating your viewers musically and in basis manners. You definitely Rock in more ways then one Fil.

His incredible passion for his music and guitar playing is extraordinary. He, no doubt, fights through the pain of Arthritis, the despicable hate and abuse thrown at him (often literally) at venues he plays at, and trolls and dickheads who hate on him online. All of which is committed by people who are ignorant about his past and current health issues. It's sad. Very sad.
I don't know, you could say the audience is cruel, but you could also say Benson has embraced the whole food throwing act and its part of what draws the crowds. It seems like a Rocky Horror Picture Show kind of tradition at this point.

Richard was a brilliant guitarist especially in the 70’s. He got arthritis and had a heart problem. He was treated so badly by people as he got older that it makes me feel sick. He was a great guitarist

I seen this video before, it is just awful to watch, a guy that used to play well, now with all his problems, it is just heartbreaking to watch the abuse.
This to me is incredibly sad. For many years in my 20's ( a time when I practiced at least 8 to 15 every day), I have a pinched nerve that caused half my fretting hand to go completely dead until around 2 pm every day. So I would spend hours on my days off from work (where I was injured to begin with) trying to make the notes sound at all, let alone cleanly. Then by the mid afternoon the feeling would start coming back into my hand and fingers and I could actually play well again.
This was during my heyday as a player, constantly in bands and playing gigs, writing music with my band mates and friends. But the mornings and mid afternoons were so hard for me I was often brought to tears because I knew what I was capable of, and that even just a few hours later I would go from sounding horrible imo to something even better than I was able to perform before my accident because I never gave up. The love of music and the guitar in particular carried me through it.
I'm happy to say that the worst of this only lasted just over 5 years, and that now I haven't felt as much as a tingle of numbness in my fingers for over a decade. So I can really relate to Richards desire to work past this problem, arthritis is no joke, my mom suffers horribly from it and I've had some arthritis in the first join of my index fingers since I was a child too (that also is much better from working on it as well).
That said, I would never have performed in that condition personally. But luckily for me, my playing would come back each afternoon and be comparatively fine until I slept again. So I could always go to band practice and gigs without getting pelted or booed. Richard doesn't have that option though, and I don't know what that's like. It must be seriously depressing at times.
You have to hand it to the guy that he loves playing so much that he hasn't quit. Many players literally give up jjust because they hear someone else playing things they think they'll never be able to play.
I hope he gets his dexterity back some day and play at least as well as he used to, if not better. But in the end I don't feel half as bad for him as I do for those who are throwing shit at him. You see, he has passion and fire, a love of playing that is so strong he not only hasn't stopped playing, he still fekkin performs. I'm not that strong or driven. But the pelters, what is it they have? Hate, the weakness that is lack of compassion, and misunderstanding of not just Richards condition, but more importantly, a complete and utter awareness of their own worse and very real mental condition. So, while I only feel sad for Richard, I pity the pelters and believe they are the ones who need our prayers most.
But a gentle warning to everyone, myself included of course: any one of us can, and probably has at some point, been a "pelter", smashed a dislike button, made a disparaging remark etc. No one is perfect, and that's alright too, as long as we strive to get better despite our short comings. That's what someone like Richard, or our own disabilities, can teach us. And iif you're struggling with a disability, trying to get better but frustrated, or just think that technical ability is all that matters...

So, I had never heard of this guy until I saw this vid. So I googled him and found a bunch of stuff about him, including other vids with lots of guys making fun of him, and to my pleasant surprise, the comments were filled with positivity toward Richard and criticisms of the people making fun of him. It's almost like hell froze over and everything was backwards on the internet. The comments weren't toxic and the world was a beautiful place.
Thank you Fil for your humanity in all of your videos, especially this one, and for sending me down a rabbit hole that led me somewhere filled with pleasant surprises.
i feel sorry for mr benson, i can relate. im 40 now and been playing guitar since i was 8. been a diesel mechanic since i was 18 and had to give up my job 3 years ago bc i couldnt take the pain anymore. smashed my hands many many times broken many fingers broken hand broken wrist and now have osteoarthritis and nephropathy. these days my fingers dont work right and my arthritis is so bad i cant play long without my arms burning and my fingers, hands in pain. i gave up on playing guitar but havnt lost lost my passion for playing guitar. being in my first band at age 12 and playing in many many bands basically all my life. Richard Benson is still following his passion and ive got to hand it to him for keeping on going even after his arthritis got so bad his fingers didnt work well anymore, so mr benson ur a hero in my book
i lost my left hand in a motorbike accident, ended my 20 years of guitar playing, i get richards story, it resonates with me
This breaks my heart. I'm 52 with degerative arthritis in my back and my fingers hurt from arthritis quite a lot. I've been playing guitar from the age of 12 and to see where this is leading hurts so much worse. I can't imagine what it will be like to put the guitar down never to be able to play again.... Age always catches up to those that see it.
Yeah I think a lot of people aren't aware of how debilitating it is unfortunately.

Coming back to this video after years, not long after attending Richard's funeral.
He was my lifelong idol, not for the music but for the entertainment, the character, the stories.
He had multiple tv shows he hosted where he would tell you about bands thanks to his maniacal and infinite knowledge on the matter.

A fantastic analysis Fil. A very humane take on someone who's been ridiculed at every step of his life.
It really is sad how much he's lost due to his debilitating arthritis and back injury. I can't imagine losing all playing ability and then being subjected to all the ridicule in the world.

I have been playing guitar for over 27 years. Over the years, i have severely broke my right wrist twice and my left once, a reconstruction surgery was required on both and left me with a rating of 75% disabled, i have practically no grip, i can't play "extreme metal" anymore which is fine with me as i grew tired of it. I have worked on some different approach of my instrument, and a dramatic change on my musical direction which i have a blast doing. But still, no matter what, i am dealing with a ton of pain playing but my passion for composing, experimenting with music overcomes the suffering i go through. To all of you who refuse to give up due to these kind of conditions, i salute you!! Much respect no matter the musical genre you're playing!!

As a guy who’s suffering from tinnitus, I can only find empathy for Richard. However, it scares me that my own playing could dissolve like that. Thank you for making this video. I don’t hear a guy just thrashing about on his guitar. I see him as a guy that just continues to do what he loves most.
As someone who quit playing for 20 years due to a battle with alcoholism, I can relate to Richard. I quit playing because the guitar was a trigger for me. Now, upon my return to the instrument, I am lacking the ability I once had. I cannot play as fast or do all the "tricks of the trade" I once could. Between my mind being slower than it once was and several physical issues, I likely will never be as good as I was back then. At the same time, having to slow down has taught me that speed and tricks aren't always better. Something I have now that was lacking in the past is a need for the note rather than the need for speed. Though I may not be a better guitarist, I feel I am a better musician. No doubt though, I wish I could Shred just for the sake of shredding, but chances are I wouldn't sound much better than Richard. I admire him for never giving up. In a way, he achieved what he wanted to achieve. Fame as a guitarist. Albeit in a negative way, it is fame none the less. He has much more courage than I have ever had and is deserving of the utmost respect.

Your Health and safety comes first. Depression is crippling. I want you to know that even though I don't know you, you are in now my thoughts and prayers. I'm no bible basher, but I've seen too much to not think that 'something's going on. Just be true to yourself, wherever it takes you. Better days are just waiting for you to walk in and claim your right. The right to be just who you are, knowing that it IS enough. That was incredibly moving. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose a skill that once defined your place in the world. It must be devastating and it's incredible that he was tough enough to keep going, even under all that abuse. Always find out the back story because dismissing anyone.
Some of Richards videos of him playing live have plastic all over the stage which makes me think that throwing stuff at him might be part of his shtick.

in my opinion he was a good guitar player, he wrote some good song like "madre tortura" and contribution whit the band "il buon vecchio charlie" he have a crazy and artistic soul, and sometimes he loose the control of the guitar. he was also a philosopher, sometimes he speak somethings very deep about life and human nature. without richard is not the same, i cry several times when i remember this. i never know him in person, just one time on the phone, but i consider him a friend. i watch him in tv show from when i was young. he give to us some good life lessons

Finally someone who really understood who Richard Benson really was. He can't play perfectly because of his disease, he managed to defeat death about 13 times and he never surrenders. He's an emblem of freedom in Italy and knows so much about metal, rock, jazz, blues, he's a living encyclopedia. He may not be good anymore with guitar, but he has a giant culture. I discovered lotsa great bands because of him: Angra is one of many examples. :)

The only thing that non-italian people is missing is the ritual of throwing things at Richard. I don't like it but It has been like that since forever. They don't throw stuff because they hate him or because they despise him. It's just a show, and he is a showman too. He taunts them, he gets naked, he throws stuff at them too. But if you look at his tv shows you can see that he talks really good about his "fans". Ok sometimes somebody exaggerate and he gets pissed and leaves the stage... but he knows everything. And the people going to the "concerts" knows him pretty well. A motto of a richard benson's fan group was "Chi tocca Benson muore" (who touches Benson will die). For me it was more painful to see people like StevieT joking about him knowing nothing of his life.
The reason I despise the people throwing thing is they are the worst kind of coward. Never in front or on stage but the first to ridicule from the safety of the crowd.

Tragic really. He really WAS good once. Sadly the things he succumbed to were all against him - arthritis, mental dementia, drug dependency, heart problems, hairloss, teeth falling out.... just tragic.
