    This is very helpful and validating for me. I and other woman have just finished restoring the same Stations. We approached them very similarly as you did. We had repairs and re-fabrications as well. In fact, I created the exact same hand for Jesus. Your work is beautiful.

    Glad to see you know what you are doing. However, plaster should never be outside because moisture, heat and humidity damage it and causing mildew under the paint. Nice job.

    Awesome job! I am restoring a small plaster statue given to me. I have a few questions what type of soap did you use to clean? and also , once a remove any loose paint, do I have to use primer on the statue or can I paint over the old paint?

    • @DeniseHoukMedia
      @DeniseHoukMedia  Před 3 lety +5

      All of that depends on what you have... get some q-tips and find a small spot where, if the product you're using removes the paint it won't do much damage. Primer is always a plus especially if your using acrylics. Acrylic is basically like painting with plastic. It likes to peel off. It needs something to "bite" into. It also doesn't like to stick to plaster. Sanding with a fine grade sanding sponge also helps.

  • @yasminedeleenheer9149
    @yasminedeleenheer9149 Před 3 lety +1

    Beautiful! Did you sand the areas where the paint peeled off afterwards so that the difference wasn't visible when painting over? Or did you paint over the flaked parts immediately? I am restoring a sculpture where the paint has flaked off and I am afraid that this will always remain visible when I repaint it

    • @DeniseHoukMedia
      @DeniseHoukMedia  Před 3 lety +3

      Peel off as much paint as you can. If it's loose and you paint over it, it won't be long and you'll have flaking paint. Sand after that and then patch it with joint compound/ plaster mix. The foundation work sometimes takes longer than the painting. It's worth it though.

    Well done! I am looking for information on doing a little bit of touchup on a few of our church's antique nativity figures; no pieces are seriously damaged, just a few nicks out of robes and a sheep is missing an ear. The majority of the repairs will be paint touchups, but for the deeper damages, what type of plaster do you recommend? Pottery plaster #1? Hydrocal? I feel like some sort of putty would be "just right" to fill in the spots. Not too runny, easily sculptable. Thoughts?

    • @DeniseHoukMedia

    Hi Denise. I just got a beautiful virgin Mary very old chalk/ plaster statue. It has quite a bit of damage and some of the plaster is very fragile where paint has come away. What is the best product to use to strengthen the fragile plaster( its kind of like honeycombed if that makes sense ..? I don't want to repaint it. I like it's age and it's story in that, but I do want to preserve it so it doesn't get any worse. It is very dull, which I also like. So do t want anything shiny that will ruin it's look. Can I maybe send you some pics? And get some advice please? Thank you! Regards.... Julie.. in New Zealand 😊

    I just refinished a St Joseph statue, it had minimal damage but it was my first time and I searched CZcams for lots of DIY help. What would be the best place to learn how to create extensions, like fingers, etc. The only areas I had to re-apply was a chunk of his robe which I just used plaster of Paris on both the remaining piece and the piece that came off, hoping it would stay! It did but I am still concerned. Where can I go to find out how to re-create missing parts?

    What brand acrylic works best for you and type of varnish for protection and gloss effect? Thx

    • @DeniseHoukMedia
      @DeniseHoukMedia  Před 7 měsíci

      Acrylic is acrylic... anything works. The difference in paint is thickness and how opaque or transparent the paint is. I like using flat wall samples mixed with craft paint because it's very opaque. It is really just personal preference. On these, they were going to go outside, so I used a spar urethane with a UV protection, but it all depends on where your statue is going. Lately, I've been using Polycrilic from Minwax because of all the options in finish. I like the ultra flat.

    Hello! I am going to try to save a beautiful old chalk plaster statue of the Blessed Mother.
    I have never done this and am hoping it can be successful.
    My biggest concern is the painting, achieving the same old, washed color, that even inserts a glazing into creases. How do I handle this with color? This is an indoor statue. I can send a picture if you would share an address if that helps! Thank you so much!
